Why Lisbon's Culinary Scene Rivals Europe's Best Food Cities - AFAR

"For a taste of the sea, head to Mar do Inferno, where clifftop views of the famously wild “Mouth of Hell” beach compete for your attention with plates of percebes (goose barnacles). Eating these peculiar crustaceans, prized for their sweet meat, requires some technique. Twist off the rubbery outer layer to reveal the delicate flesh with its salty ocean tang."

3 Best Day Trips from Lisbon | Condé Nast Traveler

"Restaurante Mar do Inferno is a high-end seafood restaurant with chic white tables and a large covered patio with dramatic views of the Atlantic—particularly of note is the Boca do Inferno cliff formation, where a natural water show takes place when the waves collide with the earth. The kitchen handles the seafood as minimally as possible in order to bring out its natural flavors, and the ingredients are sourced from across Portugal’s Atlantic coastline." - Jenna Scatena

🦞 Mar do Inferno – Cascais This was by far the best restaurant we visited in Cascais — we truly loved it! Located about a 15-minute walk from Eurostars Cascais, right along the scenic coastline, the restaurant has a classic seaside atmosphere with a beautiful nautical theme. Inside, it’s spotlessly clean, decorated in crisp white tones with elegant table settings and white tablecloths — simple but sophisticated. The service was excellent — very fast and professional. We arrived without a reservation, and they were kind enough to seat us, which is rare here. It’s a very busy restaurant, so I definitely recommend booking in advance if you plan to go. They have a fresh seafood vitrine where you can see the day’s catch — including fish, lobster, shrimp, and more. We ordered the seafood platter for two, and it was absolutely delicious. Everything was fresh, perfectly cooked, and well seasoned. The plate included fish, shrimp, mussels, as well as boiled potatoes and broccoli — a generous and satisfying meal. ⸻ ✅ Summary: • Elegant coastal dining with a beautiful sea view • Excellent seafood quality and generous portions • Fast, professional service • Reservation highly recommended ⸻ Would I go back? 100% yes. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Cascais.

Google
I came to Mar do Inferno after reading great things about it. I ordered the Seafood Rice featured in the suggestions, unfortunately I was disappointed. The dish is supposed to include lobster and tiger shrimp among other seafood. However, ours only had the heads of lobsters and tiger shrimp... For 89 EUR I would expect more than leftovers. The rice is suggested for 2 people, but it is massive, is can easily feed 4 if you also get starters. I also had seafood soup which was excellent, way more intense and rich than the rice. Sangria was also disappointing, very watered down. I had papaya as dessert which was fresh and perfectly ripe. Service was excellent and the location is and atmosphere is perfect. The other people in my group were happy with their dishes, so I'm considering their opinion in my evaluation.

Google
Top service and decent value for the quality of food. Make sure you book early ideally for the terrace to get a sea view. The special seafood platter with shellfish (full sea bass, mussels, prawns, tiger prawns and lobster) is very hard to beat. Try cod fingers (best fish fingers ever) and a seafood soup for starters. Highly recommended!

Google
Good location - next to a major tourist spot, Boca do Inferno, good ambience and views. But that’s it. We had been in Portugal for 5 days and all meals were in good restaurants with good food, so we thought this ain’t any different. So a massive disappointment. It’s a tourist trap! Way over priced seafood dishes which taste bland at best. Cascais is a rich Lisbon municipality but even then if you look around there are better options. And to top it, when the final bill came, the waiter pointed me to service charge which I politely declined (almost none expects, seeks or pays service charge in Europe) and he wasn’t happy with my decision not to pay a service charge.

Google
Superb restaurant sitting on the cliff top with expansive sea view. The seafood was top quality and beautifully cooked. Look at the fish counter on the way in. The prawns from the Algarve were sublime and the “baby lobster ( they are not) worth trying. Hake was in a very thin batter with a hint of lemon. Delicious. Staff were attentive and helpful. Highly recommended.

Google
This was a great experience. The restaurant has a great view of the ocean. The sunset can be seen from the over look just next to the restaurant, but not directly from the restaurant. The food was excellent. We had the lobster, prawns and shrimp platter with risotto. It was delicious. The service was exceptional, the server Luis (hopefully spelled correctly) is a great host. Family friendly.

Google
Elegant restaurant with excellent view. Sea food is high quality but pasta was horrible - overcooked, cheapest pasta from supermarket didn't have any connection with seafood. It's also quite pricy so just 3 stars for price/quality ratio

Google
Amazing food and location. The octopus and the fish soup were our absolute favorites. Make sure to reserve a table ahead of time.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this restaurant. The views are amazing, the food and the service were fast and our waiter spoke Spanish which was a relief. The pasta was out of this world. Hope you come and enjoy

Yelp
This place seems to be more view/ambiance than anything else~we ordered the seafood rice (basically a paella, so to speak) and red sangria. We both enjoyed our food and sangria, but weren't floored by it either. I'd definitely come back again if we were staying in Cascais, but it was a bit of a hike from Lisbon and didn't really feel worth it bc there are many, many outstanding seafood spots throughout Portugal. The view is the biggest draw here imo and that's okay bc there a lot of ppl who care more about ambiance/decor/views than their actual food...perfect spot for that crowd bc it's something you won't forget!

Yelp
Worst customer service ever. Let me start by when me and a friend walked in the first thing their server said was do you want to see the menu first before taking a seat, basically saying that we look broke for this restaurant. We said no that we will take a seat and look at the menu. We go ahead and take a seat and 20 min pass and non of the server's attends us. Another couple sits down next to us and the server brings them bread to the table and bring there drinks mind you we've been sitting in our table 20 min trying to get attention from them and none of the server will come to the table. Customer service totally awful.

Yelp
Great food and great service. Located beautifully along side the cliffs. I would definitely recommend trying this place out.

Yelp
Very touristy. Average food and a very long wait to get it. The "oceanfront" view leaves much to be desired. There are far better places to eat in this area.
google avatar

Bill H.

Yelp
One of the better ocean fronting restaurants on the toad from cascais to Guincho and within walking distance from Cascais old city. You can pay more for a Michelin star but it won't be a much better experience. The wait staff was very flexible. They turned a 2 person in to 1 portion meal at a good price. Outdoor seating to watch the sunset.
google avatar

Yelp
Really delicious food at first the one fella said they had no room for us and I believe it's the owner or the owners daughter Mariana squeezed us in. Highly recommend this place. A bit pricey but great. I suggest you call for reservations.

Yelp
Lovely elegant dining room overlooking sea was marred by a large party of about 25 flies that had apparently made a reservation for the night. They stayed for about an hour into our dinner until they turned all lights fully on. It was very odd that the restaurant staff and other patrons seemed wholly unconcerned about this. I suspect it was not the first night of the flies reservation .Service was barely there . Overall food tasty and reasonable for quantity and quality. We started with fresh crab meat which was a generous portion but unflavored and unceremoniously just dumped in a crab shell .Main course was a massive grilled platter of adequately fresh one whole fish with an entire lobster multiply tiger shrimp mussels and smaller shrimp under 100 euro to share for 2 . Could certainly serve 3. Ended the meal with a horrific lemon pie which was about 90 percent poorly cooked meringue and a 100 percent inedible . Since Cascais is swimming with many other seafood restaurants with no flies , better food and much better service I would not return and am baffled at its high ratings. I suspect it's surviving on its former glory days but sadly I must report these appear long gone.

Yelp
Excellent food with a great view. Reserve an outdoor table to watch the sunset if you can. Four of us split two two-person platters and felt that it was more than enough food. Everything tasted great.

Yelp
3.25 stars. This restaurant is located near Boca do Inferno (Hell's Mouth) in Cascais. Make sure you get some good views of some incredible landscape before or after eating here. Overall, this is a good restaurant with some very fresh seafood items that you can view yourself before purchase. We actually did not do that which was probably a mistake as there were some very tasty looking items ordered at other tables. What I will say is that the wine selection was good, the clams we ate were absolutely perfect (better than a similar dish at Ramiro in Lisbon) and I thought the sea bream was nice if not a little bland. Make sure to brush up on your Portuguese when you order here or you might get a couple of odd looks/slightly less friendly service.

Fred H.

Yelp
Excellent service nice people great view sangria was amazing One of the best in Portugal

Brian N.

Yelp
Incredible restaurant! Amazing service! Absolutely 5 star all around with an amazing view! Many fellow Americans find their way there also, and now we know why! A MUST when in Lisbon!
google avatar

Sasha K.

Yelp
One of the best seafood restaurants in Portugal outside of Michelin stars experience. Top value for the money and everything is super fresh and the staff is very attentive.
google avatar

Marcus K.

Yelp
Very nice restaurant right on edge of and overlooking the Atlantic. Came in on a weekday for lunch and seemed like a lot of locals were eating here. Had the octopus which was served in a pan with olives, potatoes and onions. So good. Was only able to eat half and took the rest home. Would come back to this in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
This is a seafood lovers heaven. Looks ordinary from the outside but it's really nice once you step in. White table cloths, nice cutlery and china and very friendly staff. I loved this place and would come back here in a heartbeat. There was about twenty of us at dinner and we had a fixed menu comprising of different types of seafood, starters and dessert. There was nothing that I did not like. Grilled sea bass for main and shrimps, tiny lobsters and clams for starters :-) yummm The sea bass was grilled to perfection and the cold seafood starters were fabulous. A few of us ended up emptying all the plates on the table with leftovers lol Staff were very attentive and we had two waiters for our table that came around regularly to top up glasses and check up on us. All in all a fabulous experience :-)

Yelp
Delicious seafood restaurant located a few minutes away from Boca do Inferno. The food, service, and ambience were all excellent! It was extremely easy to make a dinner reservation via email just a day prior, and they were super accommodating when we had to change the date AND when we arrived a full hour prior to our set time. Despite our last minute change of plans, they still managed to seat us on the patio (enclosed for the rainy weather) next to the windows so we could have a view of the ocean - which we weren't expecting at all. Definitely order one of the seafood platters for two. My fiancé and I didn't feel like fussing with crab, so we got the Special Platter (75 euros) which came with sea bass, tiger prawns, and lobster with potatoes and vegetables (according to the menu). The actual plate also had several pieces of shrimp. All of the seafood was cooked perfectly! The lobster was so tender and juicy, and had tons of bright orange tomalley (or roe?) to dip the meat in for a layered umami experience. The tiger prawn was also huge and succulent. And the shrimp! What a lovely surprise. It was cooked very well and also came with the head (easily removed), which had tons of flavor to be coaxed out. That was probably the most flavorful bite. The sea bass was also extremely meaty and moist. The olive oil with garlic at the bottom of the giant platter served as the perfect accompaniment to all of the seafood, as well as the potatoes and vegetables. It was easily more than enough for two people - you could probably have shared it among an additional 1-2 people if you got some more sides to share. This was a must visit for visitors of Cascais.

Yelp
Wonderful location overlooking the Boca do Inferno. Excellent service and an amazing selection of seafood and other Portuguese specialties. We had sole and octopus, both to be highly recommended.

Yelp
OMG. This place was a-ma-zing. I had been a bit skeptical, because it was right by Boca do Inferno, and I thought it would just be a thing because of tourists. But some colleagues took me there for lunch while I was there for a work trip, and it was so, so good. We had some local white wine as a refreshment, and a couple appetizers. But the best part was the Polvo à Lagareiro, tender octopus tentacles in olive oil, potatoes and some other bits, that was absolutely delicious. This dish was so flavorful, tasty, and tender. I hadn't had octopus before, just calamari of various qualities, and it was much, much better than I had expected.

Duncan B.

Yelp
Consistently reliable food, with long term staff.. While the restaurant has evolved over the years, the family presence has maintained the comfortable and frambiance..

Yelp
Delicious food. Our car was broken into outside while we had lunch. All of our luggage was stolen. Watch out.
google avatar

Yelp
Dang, the seafood was really good here. This place is the place to be if you go to Cascais. We were lucky to get in because we didn't have reservations but decided to drop by since it was a bit late for lunch. The place was full but they had one table available if we didn't mind sitting in the smoking room. We aren't smokers but we really wanted to eat here so we subjected our lungs to smoke and the food was worth it. We ordered the seafood platter plus garlic clams and octopus. Our server said we ordered too much food and suggested we drop the octopus. When the food came, it was a lot but I eat a lot and was craving octopus so we ended adding it back. Everything was delicious and I was very happy I got to dine there. We were also lucky because our server was super nice and spoke fluent English. We were very happy with our dining experience despite having to sit in the smoking room.

Yelp
I enjoyed the train ride out to Cascais from Lisbon and how there's a beach just foot steps from the station, Praia da Rainha. The walk from the station to Mar do Inferno had some other beautiful spots to stop and enjoy, including some a little hidden and off the beaten path. As for the restaurant, their whole crab was pretty good. The clams were solid, but I've had better elsewhere and have made better clams myself. I did not like their sangria, which was loaded with granules of sugar. The service I received wasn't the friendliest either. I did sit at the best seat in the house right by an opening out to the ocean. There was something perfect about eating seafood to the sound of the ocean. I'm glad I gave it a try, but I wouldn't come back to this restaurant again.
google avatar

Viv V.

Yelp
Great restaurant right under a sight seeing destination. If you are going to Boca do Inferno, this is the most ideal spot for lunch. We got the $40 euro seafood platter to share and it was huge! You can probably share this among 3 or 4 people with the addition of some apps. Book a table with a view in advance. Inexpensive gift shop area near by as well!

Yelp
Amazing, fresh seafood. Prepared simply and lovingly. Wait staff obedient and properly trained. Very good dining experience.

Yelp
Very very rude service We tried to make a reservation and they didn't answer and when we arrived the hear waiter was so incredibly rude. I'd never come back. EVER! Seriously attitude problem.
google avatar

Alexandra S.

Yelp
I came here for dinner alone on a weekend trip to Cascais. I arrived early (6pm) knowing that I didn't have a reservation and may have better luck early. When I arrived, there was no one at the door but this lady cleaning the floor who proceeded to ignore me when I said hello. Had to walk all the way through the place to find someone to help me. A waiter finally came and seemed annoyed that I didn't have a reservation but sat me anyway. Service was slow and inattentive, unlike what I had experienced in Portugal so far. In terms on ambience, there was no music playing, only a very annoying phone that wouldn't stop ringing and a lot of noise coming from the kitchen. Really weird Food was good, on the pricy side but good quality but don't think I would ever come back here.
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
What a gem, the service was excellent. Waiters friendly and wanting to assist you. Not even expecting a tip. Now to talk about the food. Barnacles, crab, giant prawns, clams and a delicious grilled sea bass. Pictures will tell the story. And don't forget about the white sangria.
google avatar

Anthony F.

Yelp
What a great dinner location. Ask for a window/railing seat for the view. Great staff and reasonably priced (€€) for the quality of the food.
google avatar

Nnenna I.

Yelp
Stunning views, great food, what more can a girl ask for . We had dinner reservations as it was highly recommended online. We arrived and the restaurant was busy on a Sunday evening. On entry, you see all the seafood on display. Staff were alright, we expected staff to be friendly and welcoming seeing as it's a tourist hotspot. We were offered bread with melted cheese which was unusual but tasty. We ordered the seafood platter for €75/80, it came with veg and potatoes and is one of the best meals ever. We weren't drinking on the night so the total bill was ~€90 Tips: 1. Book in advance - sea view 2. More expensive than most restaurants in Cascais 3. Take a long walk after, stunning views which is a nice spot for a proposal - should you feel inclined to

Yelp
Delicious delicious food!!! We were 30 minutes late for our dinner and they still accommodated us even though they were at full capacity. Not one seat was empty and we still got seated and served promptly. The restaurant is still being run by the owners themselves keeping the service at its best! Food was reasonably priced. We ate approximately 1kg of grouper. It came with spinach and delicious potatoes! Would definitely go again to this restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
This was the restaurant my wife and I were looking forward to most on our anniversary trip. It was, however, the most disappointing. The ambience was easily the worst during our trip to Lisbon. No music or anything on the outdoor patio. Silence. So awkward when you can hear every word of every conversation sitting around you. Speaking of the patio, it was infested with flies. Everywhere. I question the cleanliness. The food was good and our server was nice. But it was too distracting to even enjoy. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Alejandro F.

Yelp
Lunch was excellent. The view of the ocean while drinking white wine having buttery clams that melt in your mouth. The lamb Cheese was excellent. Bread is extra $ but it's great with the cheese and dipping in tag clam juice. The cod was outstanding very crispy and tasty. The curry shrimp is tasty and deliciouse. Ordered a local wine which is superb. Coffee to go and back on the road to old Lisbon. Make sure you visit the local artisan market next to the restaurant. It's a tourist trap but the people are nice and prices are less expensive than the store. Enjoy romantic Portugal.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
The food here is amazing and it's hard to believe how much food you get in a platter for the price. We had at least twice as much fish as we had last night at Furnas do Guincho and the bill here was 18 Euro cheaper. Easily the best restaurant we have been to on this trip and one of the best restaurants we have been to in Portugal overall.
google avatar

Edward N.

Yelp
We enjoyed a great bass prepared on the grill. My wife loved the white sangria. The atmosphere is very pleasant and we were seated at a table with very good views!
google avatar

Adrian S.

Yelp
Even though I am not so much into fish eating I must say I really enjoyed eating in this restaurant. The restaurant is sitting on the tip of a cliff right by the rough sea. Coming in to the place it seems like the chef at just come back from the fish market. So much fresh fish and clams and shrimps are lying around next to the kitchen. Seldomly eaten so well in a fish restaurant.

Megan V.

Yelp
I am a seafood lover and this is the place to be Amazing food and great service . We didn't have reservation and the place was packed. As soon as a table got empty they cleaned it and sat us. I told the waiter what I like and he recommended the best seafood for me and my husband to share Amazing seafood ! Love it and highly recommended to to everyone
google avatar

Kimberley J.

Yelp
I love the amejoas a bulhao pato! Every time we are in Cascais visiting, we come here for them and make sure we eat outside on their beautiful patio. There is a magnificent view of the ocean.
google avatar

Kubel F.

Yelp
Very good quality, very fresh seafood, attentative waiters. Price value ok. Went there at night, so cannot judge the view. Ambiance ok, but not overwhelming. Overall a good recommendation though.
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
I have to agree with most folks that have reviewed this place. I ordered the seafood platter and three of us shared it. The fish was very well grilled and overall quite tasty. Unlike the US where most dishes are smothered with sauces all they seem to use was olive oil and salt. The potatoes left a little to be desired as they were just too plain for my taste. Overall the food is quite good, however nothing innovative or foodie like, the view is great if you get a seat in the patio area. The one annoyance is that they really stick it to you with the bread - between the bread (3 buns) and the cheese they charged 10 Euros even though we only ate 2 of the 3 cheese. I would probably go back again.
google avatar

Hamid N.

Yelp
Great food; Great view. Order the seafood platter.

Chef Vlad H.

Yelp
Exceptional choices of fresh local fish and shell fish as well as imported shellfish. Very friendly waiters and well managed setting. Ask for Luis the waiter if you need an advice on what to order. Must go if you are in the area. Recondition: if ordering shrimp or prawns...

m m.

Yelp
Just an FYI...restaurant is closed for holiday from Oct 12th-25th..wish we would have known..it wasn't on their website

A T.

Yelp
They were super rude when I made reservation. But I took a chance anyway since it's rated-as a top restaurant in Cascais. We got there early for our reserved table for dinner at 7pm and they placed us close to an unsightly and dripping air conditioner. We asked to move our table and they said no. And this was when they were only 4 or 5 tables that were occupied. They were quite nasty about it so we walked out. There are plenty of places in Cascais with delicious food and good service. This place *may* have good food but the service is terrible. You have been warned.
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
It's so beautiful here and out of the way from the city center (~30 min scenic walk from the train station). The restaurant is on a cliff and you have a beautiful vista of their garden and the water. It's indoor seating but they open the windows so an outdoor feel. The seafood platter was amazing - so much seafood - it said its for 2 people but definitely could feed 3 or 4! Nice local wine too and relaxed atmosphere.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Amazing seafood. Very expensive. Go during daylight to see the view. We had clams to start and the seafood platter for a main. SO GOOD! We will be back. This place is perfection!
google avatar

Natalie W.

Yelp
Best seafood I've ever had in my life. They have 3 main seafood platters (all of which are shared among 2 people). My mom and I got the shellfish platter for 90 euros and included a crab, a lobster, a ton of big shrimp, crawfish, mussels, clams, and barnacles. We LOVED it! They also have an extensive a la carte menu that includes every seafood item you could imagine. Definitely try this place, sit outside, and enjoy!

Big M.

Yelp
Best garlic clams ever! I have never been disappointed with the food here. Service can be a bit slow but that might just be the American girl coming out. It's a touristy location but the bus loads of people don't come in here. There's also a really nice view.

Melissa D.

Yelp
Bruno was such a sweetheart. He provides fabulous service, made suggestions, and allowed us to get a half-order of sardines since I was dying to have them. We shared a mixed seafood plate which was a crazy amount of food: sea bass, golden bream, shrimp, and mussles. The vegetables on the side were fabulous and everything was cooked to perfection. Bruno even showed me how to eat my sardine so as to avoid bones. Great experience!
