(very long review-- TL;DR, Marakesh Leather is the BEST, they have extremely reasonable prices, and you HAVE to stop by their booth at Pike place market. The customer service and attention to detail is incredible. It's a bit tricky to find, but it's a must. Their booth is tucked away towards the end near the flower stalls.)
I visited Seattle for the first time from Portland, OR this weekend. When I was researching Pike place market to try and plan out a few specific vendors to seek out while I was there, Marakesh Leather came up. I read online that they offer a service for custom leather belts. I've been looking to purchase a genuine leather belt, so this sounded perfect. I purchased a wide variety of items in the market, but I was most excited to work with this company. Marakesh Leather was the one and only vendor I went out of my way to hunt down, and I am SO glad I did!
The woman working at the stall (I didn't get her name, but I wish I had, because she was wonderful) was extremely kind, welcoming, and went above and beyond to assist me. Her patience was amazing, and was a huge change of pace compared to the hustle and bustle of the market as a whole. She offered her opinions and advice only when I asked, and made it clear she was there to make sure I was satisfied with the products I would be leaving with. Once I'd made my choices, she also worked quickly and precisely finishing my belts.
She took her time helping me choose the colors I liked, and personally went out of her way to make sure I found the best length for the result I wanted, even going so far as coming around to the front of the stall to make sure I found the best options. I was a bit overwhelmed with all the variations for neutral shades, but her patience, kindness, and knowledge made me feel completely comfortable with asking a million questions and taking my time to finally make my choices.
The options for basic buckles that I was able to see up front were single-pronged, but I prefer double prongs, and asked if she had any options for that. She brought me silver and brass double-pronged buckles, and even offered advice for color choice based on the most popular/common pairings with black vs brown belts, as I was purchasing one of each. After a bit of deliberation, I decided to go with the popular color combos. She showed me that the buckles are usually fastened to the belt with rivets, but made the extremely thoughtful decision that she was going to secure mine with snaps instead, so I can swap them out if I'd like to if I change my mind, which I didn't even know was an option!
She came around to the front of the booth multiple times for each belt to make sure I liked the length, and to ensure the holes for the prongs were placed in the appropriate locations (the holes were custom-placed, not punched all the way around, resulting in a product that looks as high-quality as it feels). She had me try each one on more than once to be extra sure that everything was perfect. She also gave me the choice of either angled or rounded for the end of the belt, and showed me each to allow me to make an informed decision. The attention to detail was incredible.
After all was said and done, I only paid about $120 (with tax) for 2 custom-made, genuine leather belts-- which is less than I expected, and an absolute steal.
The belts she made for me ultimately are my favorite purchase I made out of everything in the entire marketplace. If I ever find myself back in Seattle, Marakesh will be my first stop. This genuinely may have been the best customer service experience I have ever had, and there was SO much thought and care put into making my items for me. I truly cannot recommend this company enough, and I'm so excited to wear my belts!
