I take Persian food seriously, so no jokes in this review like the others. Let's get down to business:

I'm not Persian. I'm an outsider who EXTREMELY APPRECIATES Persian cuisine, but what I was FIRST TAUGHT about Persian cuisine was this:
The rice is the main and most important part of the meal. Everything else (including the meat) takes a backseat. I'm not sure if this is true, but because I've learned this from the start, I judge every Persian place starting with the rice and THIS is where Maral needs improvement. Their specialty rice is SUPER dry and ingredients are sparse. They do not pack their different specialty rice full of ingredients the way Sadaf does or the way other restaurants on Westwood Blvd (nicknamed "Tehran-geles") do.
So what I'm saying is: This place lost me with the rice. The star of the meal was very dull. I like my rice juicy and buttery and packed full of cherries, fava or Lima beans, raisins, lentils, dill, dates, currants. Whatever specialty rice I order, the ingredients in it should be exploding, and this is where the restaurant falls short compared to others. If you sell your rice short, IT WILL SHOW TO EVERY PERSON WHO LOVES THIS CUISINE. It is painfully obvious the rice needs work.
HOWEVER, Maral cooks a pretty good meat. Their meat saves to day enough to at least warrant a visit. The lamb shank was wonderfully cooked and spiced (slightly sweeter than the ones I've tasted elsewhere). I used the stew juices from the lamb to doctor my Baghali Polo (cause it needed it) and overall, it made me feel better about this place. The beef Koobideh had good flavor (I could taste the onion in the ground skewer) but I felt like it was slightly over-cooked almost to the point of being dry (not quite, though. A tad bit of juiciness was left).
The Kashke O Bademjan could use improvement. NOTE: I don't know how it was made here...however, TO ME, it tasted like they used some sort of a filler or a binder to bring this together...like mashed potatoes or something...causing it to have a potato-like texture I didn't care for. It was too starchy instead of being the creamy eggplant dip I am used to. I will *NEVER* order this again from Maral if I visit in the future.
This place serves HUGE portions (+PLUS), but I'm sure their recipes are locked and will not be changing for the foreseeable future (-MINUS), so I must pass on future visits.
