The Best Persian Restaurants in Los Angeles, According to Eater’s Local Dining Expert

"The beaded chandeliers, walls lined with ornate mirrors, and crisply ironed white tablecloths signal that Maral in Agoura Hills is a finer destination for Persian cooking. Especially noteworthy is the grilled white fish prepared over an open flame. Served with a simple salad and sabzi polo (herb-packed basmati rice), the fish is tender, buttery, and ideal for seafood lovers. For those more inclined to choose turf over surf, the loobia polo is a great option. The tomato-based rice dish with green beans and chunks of beef tenderloin beef is served with a skewer of koobideh (grilled minced meat marinated with saffron, onions, and warm spices) and mixed greens." - Melody Barooni

Google
Average to medium-low experience. The place looks clean and presentable, and the dishes are generally OK. The beef skewers were too mild in flavor, while the chicken skewers were just fine—nothing remarkable. The rice was well done, probably the best part of the meal. Service was standard, nothing stood out. Overall, it’s an average spot without much to highlight. A decent option if you’re nearby, but not one I’d go out of my way for.

Google
Maral was so delicious! Their mastmoosir was so good with the complementary Taftoon! I had the trout dish and it was a huge serving, very flavorful and healthy! I’d highly recommend this place if you want to have authentic Persian food.

Google
Ordered enough food for 15 people - worked with Alex who is great - helpful and patient! The food was packed up beautifully - it was easy to display and was packed in boxes so the hot food stayed warm. All the guests raved about the quality and the flavor - no surprise there! Maral is top notch! Thanks for making our party extra special.

Google
absolutely delicious food with huge servings. I ordered fesenjan which is my favorite stew. I couldn't figure how to upcharge to the albaloo polo so I ordered a side of it. A generous amount of rice came with each entree so it ended up taking us four days to finish all the rice!

Yelp
My husband and I eat here a couple times a month. They have a wonderful lunch special. You can get a healthy lunch for under $10.00 Yes, you heard that correct. I love the beef, Gyro, which offers rice, salad, or lentil soup. There are mini lunch choices. My husband tends to get the fish, trout or salmon. The food here is so fresh, healthy and delicious. The staff is amazing! They take pride in their work. Polite, efficient, and kind. They also have an incredible bakery. Offering breakfast now, the restaurant was packed today. But, smooth sailing, as usual. I could not resist popping into the bakery, for some treats to take home. David and Cheryl- Thank you

Yelp
The lamb shank was good and the chicken was delicious. Sad they were out of baklava for dessert. Although they had really good Persian ice cream. Fancy place on the inside, clean white interior. The menus were kind of cheap, expected something nicer.

Yelp
I was told the food will take 45 to 50 minutes and it took them an hour and a half. I asked for a family style 4 orders of kubadi plates (one chicken one beef per plate) They brought one plate. When I called to speak with the manager he was completely lost and was belligerent and told me that I made the mistake because I had to tell them to put it in their system. They did not listen to the customer and were belligerent. I will never order from them again. This entire conversation was with the manager.

Yelp
"I'm very happy to change my review and give this place another opportunity. This is the second time I'm coming during lunchtime and ordering the same thing, chicken boneless kabob, and the flavor is amazing. The rice was cooked to perfection, just the way it is supposed to be. They are always busy during lunchtime, which means people like their food. I will definitely be coming back for lunch since I work within walking distance from them.

Yelp
Went out to dinner with friends and needed someplace centrally located for all of us. Maral Cuisine was the best choice. I had been here several years ago and ordered take out a few years back, but I have not been here recently. I remember liking it those times, so I was looking forward to a nice dinner. It did not disappoint. I ordered the shish kabob, and my friends ordered chicken dishes. My meat was deliciously seasoned and melt in your mouth tender. It was perfect. The tomatoes, peppers, and onions were a nice addition. My friends ordered chicken koobideh and boneless chicken kabob. They are not that acquainted with Middle Eastern food, but enjoyed their food very much. The service was nice. Everyone was friendly and attentive. Our iced tea was never empty, and at one point, they left a carafe of iced tea for us on the table. They also did not rush us and let us enjoy our meal. The inside of the restaurant is light and bright. It is very clean. There is plenty of parking. I will be adding Maral Cuisine into our rotation of Middle Eastern restaurants to visit.

Yelp
Awesome. Chicken was great. Kabob was great. I would strongly recommend. If holiday make reservations.

Yelp
Love the food. Plenty to share Great for take out or dine in Nice choices Ambiance good Service good Recommend

Cindy H.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mediterranean food. The prices are good, large portion and it is delicious!! The employees are so nice and they never rush you out like some restaurants. I definitely recommend them.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is not fresh. We tired it couple times and the quality is not good comparing their high price. Also their food is not seems to be cooked freshly. Sometimes it seems the food already boiled/grilled and they just reheat it

Yelp
Maral Cuisine is one of those places tucked in an Agoura strip mall that you expect to be adequate if you're lucky but never expect it to be above average . Well , you'd be wrong. It definitely has an extensive menu , moderately priced and the staff is beyond accommodating. When I had specific diet questions about using gluten in their ground chicken dish ( koobideh) their cook was gracious and came out to give me answers - which I totally appreciated! And later I totally enjoyed the dish as well . So on a day you want to take a small vacay from cooking and still stick to a special diet this is your place to take out or dine in . The place has multiple seating areas both indoor and outdoor and the plaza has ample well lit parking. Best of all - I found out they even have a bakery/ coffee shop in the back . And yes, they make gluten free bakery items too.

Yelp
Dined here tonight for the first time in a long while. There was a time when my former company got lunches from Maral at least twice a week for years. Quality was always high and consistent. I'm pleased to find nothing has changed, which is to say it is still great. We got an appetizer tray with baba ganoush, hummus, smoked eggplant and tabouli. Three entrees, a chicken koobada, a beef dish and shrimp dish. Please refer to my pictures. A literal feast for $100 with enough leftovers to be stuffed with Mediterranean goodness again tomorrow. Yum!

Michael B.

Yelp
Amazing food! Great service and cozy relaxing ambiance! Faranak was an amazing waitress. The eggplant dip was crazy good and the meat was cooked perfectly

Yelp
Well here we are eight years later since my previous review and wow - changes! New owner, new decor (much nicer!) and food was very good! Not going crazy with the butter and salt - just natural, nice flavors! Persian wifey approved of the baghali polo, I had the chicken koobideh with regular rice - really good! Excellent service by three sisters who all look alike, it's almost funny :-) We will be back!

Yelp
Best food. Best service. Super clean. Friendly and happy staff. We go here at least twice a month! Never been disappointed. Everything and everyone is top notch !
google avatar

Yelp
Maral Cuisine is a regular delivery option for our family. We have it at least once a month. If you have never tried cherry rice before you should deff give it a go! It sounds kind of "weird" but I promise, it's delicious. Our favorite dish is the beef kobideh. We usually order too much on purpose because one time we didn't have enough and almost had a mutiny at the dinner table. I recommend wrapping the meat in a wet paper towel to reheat it otherwise it can dry out. Beef kobideh and cherry rice is a winning combo!
google avatar

Shadi M.

Yelp
It was a nice resturant but it's not something that I go back to unless I have to. The service was good but the food wasn't my favorite.

Alla S.

Yelp
We like Maral cousin a lot. Go there very often, but last time we were there, we noticed how much they changed: much more expensive and quality of the food is not the same: everything we tried was pretty dry and cherry rice, our favorite, was not as good as before. They charge you to substitute rice $1.95, which was never before; they charge you for an extra brad $1.85. On top of it, all food and beverages prices went up for about 25% - 30%.
google avatar

Renée V.

Yelp
I had to leave a review because this has been one of our favorite restaurants recently! The ambiance is elegant, and it is connected to a bakery that offers delicious and beautiful pastries and other treats at a great price. You must try the tabbouleh salad and chicken koobideh!

Yelp
The food is excellent, everything is so good, and the staff are very nice and right on top of everything, whether you're dining in or taking out!

Yelp
Food was good as always. Service was good too, they were pretty backed up on orders so we had to remind them on a couple things, but other than that, they were great.

Tahereh F.

Yelp
I'm known by Sheila, I've been going & catering from Maral Cuisine since it opened. Unfortunately, I can't make any recommendations on which food is my best choice. Simplicity, all their foods are fresh and taste great. In fact Maral is my favorite restaurant since I have been living for 55 years in S. California. Their management of foods, in or out and catering are phenomenal. Thank you Maral Cuisine.

Yelp
My brother in law lives in Agoura hills and I hit Maral almost every time we are there. I got the beef Khoobideh and it never disappoints. The rice is great and the roasted tomatoes are always a hit. The staff is always courteous and fast. A great place for lunch with great Persian food.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of Persian food. And always on the lookout for one that does the tahdig well. Well look no further than Maral Cuisine. They have a really great, highly generous lunch special menu which comes with a soup or salad (get the soup!!) and two meal sized portion of rice and an entrée like kebab, khoobideh, Ghormeh Sabzi etc. You get a basket of housemade Lavash for the table as well. Ghormeh Sabzi - Fresh Herbs Mixed with Red Kidney Beans and Chunks of Beef. Served with Basmati Rice. My family has been known to make a meal out of Persian made basmati rice...and even though I usually don't eat rice, for this meal, I have to make the exception. The Tahdig is the crusty bottom of the rice and done well it is the perfect compliment to this stew. And can I just say, it was done perfectly. It was well flavored and crispy but not to the point of cracking my teeth...Tahdig is not automatic with the lunch special- you have to ask for some. I asked- they delivered. My friends had the Beef and Chicken Khoobideh (ground meat) respectively and enjoyed every last bite. Oh, the lentil soup that comes as part of the meal is enough to be a meal in itself. It's delicious, perfectly flavored and not a cup, but rather what would be considered a small entree sized bowl in any other restaurant. So, soup or salad, huge heaping of deliciously cooked basmati rice, meat skewer or stew (2 portions for sure), a grilled tomato (not a fan-- but that's just me, others enjoyed it), and a grilled pepper-- all for under $20. I'm just sad I didn't take any pictures! Can't wait to go back. PS: the Persian tea-- supposed to be drunk with a sugar cube in your mouth - (yep, pop the sugar cube in the mouth and then sip on the tea) was also delicious.

Yelp
We just moved to the neighborhood and tried them out for lunch with some friends today. Quite possibly the juiciest chicken ever. The service was ok. Food better. We will be back.
google avatar

Kath R.

Yelp
Marla is one of our go-to neighborhood restaurants. The meat dishes are delicious and the portions are generous. The salads are always very fresh.
google avatar

Nick T.

Yelp
Pretty standard Persian food that never wows but is consistently good. Unless you live very locally there is a good chance of finding a similar, if not superior place like this near you. I will say that I always see their delivery truck driving around, so it must be somewhat popular.
google avatar

Bella H.

Yelp
The quality and quantity of their food has dropped after the pandemic. Food is a little price. If you order delivery they always cut the amount of the food significantly. Make sure you check the food right when you receive it.
google avatar

Patty N.

Yelp
The food is not good the Kabab is so dry , the service is poor I saw the waiter cleaned the fork with his hathis business runs by very dishonest people , I had bad experience they used my information and charged me twice anytime I made order in that place .
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
I have lived in the area for a long time and it took me a while to try this place. The food is very good and a lot of food is given. I have not dined in, only take out and the individual giving me my food and collecting payment was very short and somewhat rude. I believe they were just busy at the time and preoccupied but I hope to give it another try. Based on food quality, definitely 5 stars, just down to 4 based on the interaction with staff.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Alireza is fantastic. Helpful and caring. He is very considerate and professional. Best Experience Ever comparing to the Persian Restaurants. Quality of the lamb is perfect. Try Cornish chicken. The stews are delicious. And I would like to give " THE MUST TRY " to the LOOBIA POLO

Joseph S.

Yelp
Excellent service Foods out of this world. Portions are huge and more than enough to share. 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Every time, we have a problem with order for pickup. Today, when I called, I was asked to come in 20 minutes. But when I went after 30 minutes they hadn't even started my order. They falsely said that I called 5 minutes ago. When I showed my call log, they were speechless. I will never order from this place again.

Shilla A.

Yelp
So yummy! The fesenjoon and ghormesabzi are great filled with meat and so much for the order of tadig (crispy rice) a must try ! Really hit the spot! If you're looking for something new to try check it out you won't be disappointed

Yelp
This is overdue review after being a regular patron over 3 years. Recently had family visit and dined in and discovered their bakery addition next door. The food is always delicious and you can taste the premium ingredients that they use in the Persian rices and grilled items. Huge fan of their dolmas, saffron rice with lentils, and grilled items. They also are a great take away place. The food is packed well and they always include butter and sumac.

T B.

Yelp
The food at Maral Restaurant is beyond amazing, with superb taste and quality. The portion sizes are generous, and the presentation is excellent. However, the servers are notably slow, which can affect the overall dining experience. Yet, this place is incredible on the tastebuds......
google avatar

Yelp
Food is good and ambiance. Service is great. I always order ghaymeh bademjan which is great. Sabzi polo ba mahi is excellent. Easy parking.

Yelp
Good quality food :) Their Combination plate is awesome with variety of meat and rice . We will go there for sure ..

Kamran A.

Yelp
Great spot. We always order from here and live in Simi Valley. They need to open a Persian restaurant in Simi Valley.

Miss Messy D.

Yelp
I have LOVED this place so much. I'm saddened at the lack of the food provided. The "kabob" plate is now only 1 skewer with 4 pieces of chicken. $21 and barely enough. I ordered Tadig and ghaimeh and called to ask that it could be separated. They didn't separate them so the Tadig was soggy. I am so sad. I was so hungry and I ended up not eating very much.
google avatar

Jay J.

Yelp
Parking is easy Service is fast and efficient Salad shirazi was so fresh Tadig was done with rice but was still good but get it with a khoresht on top I ordered Soltani so I could check out the barg and koobideh both were tasty The barg was so good that you do not need a knife it just shreds Great ambiance on the inside well lit and art work on the walls Finally for desert I walked to the bakery and they had tons of sweets My favorite is roulette so I ordered it and it was great but be ready for a messy dessert cause it was very moist Persian food done right
google avatar

Neda M.

Yelp
The quality of the food is wonderful, priced very fairly, and large portions. Staff is super friendly and provide fast service. Really feels at home

Lisa S.

Yelp
Ordered three entrées to go, and only received two. Chicken kebab was dry and difficult to eat. Called and told them they only gave us two entrées and all they could say was oh I guess I got the order wrong.

Marta P.

Yelp
Alway enjoys my meal at Maral Feel like family Clean and food excellent My favor dish Chicken and lentils rice Jalapeños and tomato Yup so delicious

Yelp
I take Persian food seriously, so no jokes in this review like the others. Let's get down to business: - - - - - I'm not Persian. I'm an outsider who EXTREMELY APPRECIATES Persian cuisine, but what I was FIRST TAUGHT about Persian cuisine was this: The rice is the main and most important part of the meal. Everything else (including the meat) takes a backseat. I'm not sure if this is true, but because I've learned this from the start, I judge every Persian place starting with the rice and THIS is where Maral needs improvement. Their specialty rice is SUPER dry and ingredients are sparse. They do not pack their different specialty rice full of ingredients the way Sadaf does or the way other restaurants on Westwood Blvd (nicknamed "Tehran-geles") do. So what I'm saying is: This place lost me with the rice. The star of the meal was very dull. I like my rice juicy and buttery and packed full of cherries, fava or Lima beans, raisins, lentils, dill, dates, currants. Whatever specialty rice I order, the ingredients in it should be exploding, and this is where the restaurant falls short compared to others. If you sell your rice short, IT WILL SHOW TO EVERY PERSON WHO LOVES THIS CUISINE. It is painfully obvious the rice needs work. HOWEVER, Maral cooks a pretty good meat. Their meat saves to day enough to at least warrant a visit. The lamb shank was wonderfully cooked and spiced (slightly sweeter than the ones I've tasted elsewhere). I used the stew juices from the lamb to doctor my Baghali Polo (cause it needed it) and overall, it made me feel better about this place. The beef Koobideh had good flavor (I could taste the onion in the ground skewer) but I felt like it was slightly over-cooked almost to the point of being dry (not quite, though. A tad bit of juiciness was left). The Kashke O Bademjan could use improvement. NOTE: I don't know how it was made here...however, TO ME, it tasted like they used some sort of a filler or a binder to bring this together...like mashed potatoes or something...causing it to have a potato-like texture I didn't care for. It was too starchy instead of being the creamy eggplant dip I am used to. I will *NEVER* order this again from Maral if I visit in the future. This place serves HUGE portions (+PLUS), but I'm sure their recipes are locked and will not be changing for the foreseeable future (-MINUS), so I must pass on future visits. 3 Stars

Yelp
Delicious food and excellent service in a lovely, clean atmosphere. The food seems especially fresh and juicy.

Keith L.

Yelp
Whatever entree I got has been great so far, beef koobideh, beef chicken kabob and other things i forget the name of, been just trying the menu. I always order more roasted tomato and jalapeno since they just go so well with whatever. What keeps me coming back is the rice, the rice is just well made. Dunno how to explain it, the rice is just good
