We wanted to try a different restaurant in Raleigh so we checked Yelp and noticed Margaux's. The restaurant is tucked away in the back of Brennan Station on Creedmoor Road. My wife and I visited there on a Saturday evening. The parking can be tight in that area, but was not too bad when we went. We arrived for our 6:30 reservation. I would recommend placing a reservation on weekends as there was a lot of people coming in after we were seated. However, now I understand why so many people dine there.
The atmosphere is very nice. I would say the atmosphere is casual New Orleans. Our waiter was prompt and did a great job explaining any dish we had questions about.
For the food, the potstickers were great. Two large potstickers, fried well, not only. The tang of the kimchi was a great addition to the flavor. The side salad was fresh and the sweet chili sauce was a must-have to put in the potstickers.
The roasted shrimp with penne was very good too. Fresh is the best word I can give for the entre. Everything had a light taste, the shrimp was cooked perfectly and the tomato based sauce would be good on just about anything, so much flavor! The only thing I would have wanted was some additional shrimp. The entree came with only four shrimp. No complaints about the taste, but I think it dish should have included a few more.
The oatmeal cookie desert was a surprise. I asked our waitress beforehand about it and she thought I might like so I tried it....Good choice! It reminds me of an upscaled oatmeal cookie sandwich. The cookie was rich, the filling was not too sweet. The raspberry sauce on top was perfect to cut through the richness of the cookie. The sandwich sat on what looked like whipped cream, but was actually softened ice cream. Last, there was a caramel sauce under everything that just brought everything together nicely. The desert is rich and heavy, but so good.
My wife's Caesar salad, she mentioned it had a great taste, the dressing was especially memorable, fresh, light and full of flavor.
The pan seared scallops were tender and sweet, just as they should be. The broccoli cooked well, still having a dark green color and retained a nice bite, not mushy. The mango chili sauce added a lot of flavor to the dish. The menu showed green beans as one of the sides, but I believe they may not have had any when we visited, so broccoli was substituted. There were no objections! Again, the only complaint from my wife was that there were only three scallops on the plate, one more would have been welcomed. Not an issue, just being picky!
For desert, she had the crème brûlée. She loved it! The custard was very creamy, not too sweet and the caramelized sugar top was golden brown and brittle as expected. The combination of those flavors worked well together.
Overall, we had a very fine dinner that night. The atmosphere was relaxed, staff personable and attentive. It was our anniversary and our waitress gave us a hand written card congratulating us on our celebration and many more. We'll definitely return, most likely with a few more people in tow!
