Detroit’s Best Sports Bars to Watch the Lions, Wings, and the College Football Playoffs | Eater Detroit

"Green awnings, glowing neon, drop ceilings and every inch of wall covered with newspapers celebrating Detroit sports — mostly Red Wings — history: that’s how you know you’ve come to the read deal sports bar. Marge’s, on Mack Avenue just over the Grosse Pointe border, has been serving up burgers and beers for raucous fans since 1966." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
The best “hockey bar” in the world. When you go to Marge’s you travels back in time with the authentic memorabilia on the walls (including some Olympia Stadium Boards). Owner Jimmy cooks the best burgers and the staff is always friendly.

Brand Blouse-Moore

Google
Cool ole school dive bar that seems designed for a hockey game. Food was pretty darn good too.

Tina Thoel

Google
Great food Rob rocked it out with the great service! We had the fish and Chips and salmon. The fish had such a light breading on it, was great. Thanks Rob! It's a must check out.

Brad Birch

Google
Exactly what you expect. Very good soup and burgers. The daily specials are delicious and well priced. Annabelle is a wonderful server.

Google
Very racist. They do not like neither want black ppl in this establishment. Very cold and distant, food was sloppy and undercooked,(so we would never return) the guy that owns the bar is a mean racist, but it’s a whites only so no one will care. Place is dump, a coworker and I stopped by for some lunch just nasty and rude service, if you are black/ African American do not patronize because they will show you that they don’t want you there. I seen the tall guy also scratch his behind before serving us our food. If you are black do not and I repeat, do not support this place. Edit: and look at how the owner replies to the racist remarks without apologizing, disgusting

Google
Perch and broccoli were wonderful. The place was a bit warm but friendly and packed. We had a big group and they treated us great!

Mark Gjeloshaj

Google
Atmosphere and food are always solid. Not sure what’s up with the service. Came in today and waited 40 minutes to be served. No one checked on us and so our group of 6 went elsewhere. Had similar odd experiences with the service in the last year. I really love their burgers so it’s unfortunate this is happening.

Google
Love going to dine, steak dinner was cooked perfect. Family always meets there for great service and watch a game.

Yelp
Old school neighborhood pub with tons of hockey memorabilia for the hockey fans among us. Pool table, a couple of TVs for sports fans. Go during a wings game for a true fan experience. Good bar grub. Have been loving this place for years. A true GP staple. Cash only on Mondays.

Donna A.

Yelp
Wonderful Fish at Marges! We were so pleasantly surprised. The grilled salmon was done perfectly and the perch plate was also done perfectly. Never thought fish could be so perfectly cooked in a nice neighborhood bar. Kudos to the cook!! I would have given Marge's a 5, but our service person wasn't that attentive. Our entrees were delivered to our table, but we never saw our server again until the bill came. I had to flag someone down for a glass of water. Good thing the food was really good. Will return especially for the salmon. Keep on cooking the same way!!!!

Corey S.

Yelp
Good food but bad waitress experience. It was a short brunette with glasses. She seemed kind of dry when we came in. I ordered the Monday special that was $2.00 burgers. +$2.00 for lettuce, tomato and onion. Everyone seemed weird, like I was in Twilight Zone. Stephen was cool, I guy I met. Other than that TERRIBLE!!! She brought me cheese fries with no fork and when I asked for one she threw it on the table. The bill was $50.67. For four sliders to IPA's, double shot of Fireball, small chili fries and a side of regular fires on saucers. When it was time to pay the bill, I said that we were ready to pay, she RUDELY stated that she'll be there in a minute. I asked her "what was the attitude for?" And she stated again that she said that "she'll be right there". It was so rude that the blond waitress had to step in and ring us up. And said that she "didn't understand that". It was VERY unsettling.

Yelp
This place is like walking into a bar History museum. Obviously this is a hockey bar, and it has kept the ambiance of the early 60s. Great little place to come and grab a beer and something to eat, we had the burgers they were very good. The onion rings OMG were the crunchiest onion rings I have ever had ever. The bartender was friendly, very talkative and definitely connected to the regulars. It's a good place to stop don't pass it by.

Yelp
This is iconic GPP bar and grub spot. This is where you go to reconnect with some old school friends. It's been around as long as I can remember and probably longer yet. Good neighborhood feel and super casual. Staff has always been friendly whenever I meet up with highschool friends that still live in the area. The food is typical bar food fare and as expected.

Yelp
We had the best time at Marge's. Our waiter Rob is on his way to getting his Michelin Star! The best service. Above and Beyond! Can't wait to see "fried pickles" on the menu. Teddy was killing it in the kitchen!

Yelp
One of the best burgers in Metro Detroit! Great, friendly service! Awesome prices. It's an awesome dive bar and that term is a possible. Highly recommended!

Vivian P.

Yelp
Great lunchtime menu and specials. Traditional neighborhood spot, friendly, food is great, service is fast.
google avatar

Yelp
I am rating this a 3 due to accessibility. If you were by yourself in a wheelchair/scooter you cannot enter without help. Food is always good and prices are reasonable. I recently started to use a mobility device and just started looking at establishments with accessibility in mind.

Yelp
the inside is smaller but its cozy and cute. I enjoyed my burger! have also gotten a takeout club from here and enjoyed that too. It was a good experience and I would return again!

Yelp
We love Marge's. One of the best burgers out there. Everyone is always so nice and like I said, they have a great burger!!
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
mondays are the jam. super cheap coney and burgers and it's really good. The bartenders are great. The cooks are great. Everything's great. Just put it that way.

Michael M.

Yelp
Every person liked their burger but mine was medium instead of medium rare. Nit picking, but I like this place. Onion rings were great.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I love this old school hockey bar. Sports are on all the time and their burger is delicious. Little Tonys is my favorite, and one night I told the bartender at LT that I finally found a burger that is as good as theirs and he told me it better be at Marges Bar. Old school drinks and beer here, and the bartenders are all good people.

Yelp
Sara.... Well words fail to describe her smile and engaging personality..... dive bars have an inherent appeal to us members of the big wheel crowd ..... however they typically fall short on service ..... I've been coming to this joint for decades ..... SARA IS A KILLER ADDITION

Yelp
First and foremost, Marge's is a HOCKEY bar. Hockey, hockey, hockey! Puck! Puck! Puck! They must be doing something right ... they've been open for 49.5 years. I returned today, to buy a "Marge's" t-shirt for my SiL (Marge). There was also that pesky matter of "we make our own corned beef." I can report that their corned beef makes a wonderful reuben. The corned beef is very lean and quite tasty. The sauerkraut has good bite/zip/tang. The amount of dressing was just right. The bread was nicely grilled. It was not the hot greasy mess that some reubens are. The onion rings are also terrific: Thick cut onion rings, nicely deep fried ... without being the greasy mess that is too typical. I wish I lived closer to Grosse Pointe Park. Aw' what the heck, gas was only $1.75/g today. I will return. (I forgot to buy a container of soup to-go)

Yelp
So, I had some serious time to kill between work and a Yelp Elite event on this side of town, so I was looking for a place in Grosse Pointe to dine at before going to guzzle down some wine. I wasn't hungry for anything in particular, but felt that I wanted something different and local to the area. (preferably no chains, since I can get chain places anywhere.) This place kept catching my eye so I bookmarked it and headed out to check this place out. For starters, I wasn't sure what to expect. I walked in and it kind of had a middle of the road appeal. Place was mostly empty, so I parked it at the bar and the lady handed me a drink with a menu. Place seems to have a decent selection of menu items, and she even gave me a thingy with the Tuesday specials. Place is totally a hockey bar, and I guess has been around for a long time. There were a few other patrons at the bar with me who seemed to be regulars. Despite there only being 4 of us at the bar at any given time, the bartender seemed to be busy throughout the time I was there. I ended up going with the roast beef sliders that came with Coleslaw and Macaroni Salad. Different, but a okay. the sliders were the best out of the three, second place was the Macaroni Salad, and the coleslaw was awful. Blech! I still can't stop thinking about the awful coleslaw. I don't know why, but I was like "Oh Gahd this tastes yucky." Anyways, the bartender was having a nice conversation with the guy next to me at the bar, and it was nice to not only watch TV at the bar, but actually have the volume on as well. I was enjoying my time here, and it was nice for a change to sit back and listen. If this place was a chain, I would give it three stars. I feel like, in my book, 4 stars means I want to come back at some point, or something stuck with me food wise that I want to go back. I feel like the whole place was a okay, but not enough to be like "OMG I MUST RETURN IMMEDIATELY FOR MORE." This place is fine, but I'm not hustling back for more any time soon. Nothing really stuck out except for the fact that it was a cool place to eat at for a change. Kind of reminds me of a place I would have gone to in the mid 90's after work to hang? Anyways, give this place a try. The food was pretty good and I enjoyed my time here. Parking was tight but available, and it has more of a family bar feel for the occasional beer when you want to get out of the house. Bartender was cool and food was good as well.

Yelp
Good old dependable bar food. If you want to find a dive bar to hang out with friends, look at all the old stuff on the wall, drink inexpensive beers and chow on good bar food.... This place should be on your list.

Laya C.

Yelp
Good burgers and friendly service. I definitely will return soon l. Thanks for everythin

Yelp
Marge's is a neighborhood bar that is an institution. They have perch dinners on Friday nights and burgers and sandwiches and soup & chili available all the time. Nothing fancy here, just a bar with some tables and lots of hockey memorabilia. It's a great place to watch a Wings game, if they score they'll set off the light & siren. On Thursdays they have a jazz band that has been playing there forever but they mix it up with guest members. They have a good selection of beer and of course all the different alcohol choices you could want. The staff is efficient and friendly. Worth a try if you want a burger or some perch.

Yelp
LOVE MARGE'S! This was an awesome discovery a few years ago when I was in GP looking for a place to watch the Wings. Not knowing anything about the place my cousin and I walked in right as a goal was scored and an air horn and goal light started flashing throughout the place...it was quite a surprise but really fun. Overall...the food and the atmosphere have kept me driving across town to come here. Their Hat-Trick burger is GINORMOUS but super delish. The onion rings, as previously mentioned, are also out of this world...they kind of taste like donuts (which sounds weird...but they have that battered texture). I'm sure hoping the NHL gets this lock-out worked out so I can have an excuse to frequent Marge's more often. PS - great story....two years ago when the Wings were close to an elimination in the playoffs someone (owner/manager) brought out a huge basket of foil wrapped hot dogs and started tossing them to customers (and it was packed to the gills) shouting RALLY-DOGS!!! It was such a unique thing and really got the crowd excited. While it didn't help the Wings win....it made me love Marge's even more, if that is possible.

Yelp
I had lunch there two days in a row. I liked it. Staff warm and friendly. Daily Specials is the way to go. Perch the first day and was better than good. Actually what drive me back again the second day. Second day a sandwich it was good. Soup is very tasty.

Yelp
Okay so I finally tried this bar out. First impression.... not so great. Before I get to far, food was ok. I had the hat trick burger with fries and cold slaw. Burger was great. Coleslaw was not the best, and my lovely lady had the salmon caesar which bairly had dressing on it, had to ask for extra dressing which I had to holler at the bartender to pay attention to us, then still took many minutes to get. The setting is dive bar like, but service is terrible. Took a long time for food and forget about getting another drink, ordered one and never was asked if I wanted a second. I think if you are not over the age of 40, you will be ignored. Wow do the employees love to talk about everyone that eats there. If you don't believe me eat at the bar and you will hear what I mean. Sorry Marge you have what it takes but employees need to change.

Yelp
A Detroit Classic - Former RED Wings Hang out (1990's) Great Sandwiches - Nostalgia and you guessed - I was in the neighborhood & That brought me in! Cheers!
google avatar

Yelp
You wouldn't believe this by looking at the place, but the food is top notch. Chicken wings, burgers, perch dinner, etc. A favorite of mine is the Charbroiled Chicken tenders. Order it with jalapeño peppers, you won't regret it. Soups are obviously home made, but I'm not a fan of the chili, but friend like it. Stop in there for dinner or lunch sometime. You won't regret it. Only one thing, beware of the bartender women that is often working there. Blond hair, pale skin. She always seems to be on the edge of seat and ready to blow up angry. Not very pleasant to be honest. She is why I didn't give the fifth star.

Steve K.

Yelp
Love, love, LOVE Marge's Bar. Best place to watch Wolverines away games, Lions & Red Wings. Your affable host, Jimmy, is always welcoming. Margaret and a the bomb waitress/barkeep with a memory like a steel trap, always making you feel at home. Great bar food. Our favorite sports-watching, beer swilling, greasy food eating place on the whole east side. A Grosse Pointe Park tradition!
google avatar

Celeste B.

Yelp
Marges is a park staple. They have Molson on tap and other typical lagers, they have your typical bar selections. The food is amazing. They have specials throughout the week and it's great bar food. The reason to come to Marges is to watch the redwings play. It is the quintessential hockey bar, with loads of wings paraphernalia! When the wings score they play the loud buzzer you hear when you go to a hockey game. I definitely recommend this bar for a game, it's an ultimate experience.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Come here if you want a great burger. Otherwise, it is rather dingy in here. You can tell that this place has been around for centuries. I give this joint 3 stars because it was not the best atmosphere in here. This place just doesn't feel all that clean, if you know what I mean. However, no complaints about the burger.

Geoff M.

Yelp
Been to Marge's many times usually no issues. The last 2 times I've been there there is a crazy and lazy bartender(Rochelle) She complains about everything. I asked for some additional cranberry for my wife's drink and she mumbled under her breath "I'm done, I'm done. " as she walked away. The funny part is the reason she wanted additional cranberry is because the bartender had no clue how to make her drink. She had to add it just to be able to drink it. I saw multiple people not happy with her and having to walk up to the bar to pay their bills or ask for something. She constantly complained and talked negatively about the customers. If you are that unhappy with your job maybe it's not for you. On a positive note the coney and burger special on mondays are great. Food is good and priced right.
google avatar

Kent P.

Yelp
Hands down the best bar food on the East side. Great burgers and sides -onion rings are like giant donuts- while their wings are huge and made simple. Draft beer is served in perhaps the "iciest" mug to be found. Good spot for watching sports ... especially hockey. Not just Wings, though, any hockey. Very friendly staff and generally a welcoming local crowd.
google avatar

Jeremiah F.

Yelp
Marge's is a greasy dose of genuine blue collar atmosphere, served up in the sickly white corridors of Grosse Pointe. It won't win an awards for gourmet cooking or classy clientele, but then again, I wouldn't go if it did. The food beats expectations: try the beer-battered onion rings, Fish Fridays, or the burgers. The owners are super-friendly, the beers are cold, and the jukebox plays bluegrass. What else do you want?
google avatar

Hubert S.

Yelp
There are quite a few places in the Grosse Pointe area that seem to have been around FOREVER. Marge's is definitely one of them. It is basically a sports bar. They also serve food. Towards the back of the building, you will find a pool table and a dart board, but that's about it. The motif of the place definitely caters to Detroit's deep connection with hockey as there's a bench made of hockey sticks. There are pictures of old Red Wings and other star NHL players all over the place. The one thing you notice about many of the storied bars around Grosse Pointe is the ever-present smell of stale cigarette smoke. I imagine the recent ban approved by the Michigan Senate will make many east siders sad come May 2010. I know I can do without it, but I feel like the smell of millions of cigarettes inhaled over strong alcoholic drinks has a nostalgic quality that I will miss. Seriously, go to Marge's for lunch and you'll definitely see a couple Cheers-like types sitting at the bar with a mid-day beer. I am sorry, but there is something very Ernest Hemingway about that. Oh, the food... I would suggest sticking with fries, onion rings and chicken wings. Everything else is fairly greasy, even ground sausage on a pita. It's surly bar food though and there is definitely a time for it. Wait, their fish and chips are pretty solid, if I do recall. My biggest gripe though is Grosse Pointe bars do not seem to believe in drink specials. Marge's is no exception. From speaking to a bartender, they do not have a happy hour. That is a bummer, because I feel like such a place would be my favorite local dive. I guess I will just stick to Tap Room, it is closer anyway.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Marge's is located a few blocks from my home, so I ducked in their after a weekend getaway to watch the 2nd period of the Wings/Blackhawks playoffs, as this is supposedly the hockey bar! No understatement as the moderate sized Monday night crowd were all glued to the TVs. I may have been the only person to notice the place has probably not been remodeled since they opened some 40 years ago. Nor have the smoke stained ceiling tiles been replaced, even though Michigan banned public smoking 3 years ago. Marges is the perfect place to grab a beer and enjoy typical bar food. Nothing more and nothing less. I wouldn't hestitate to return there with my sports loving friends, but would never bring a date there ( I have yet to date a Red Wings fan! ). The patty melt was fine, although the cook could use a beefier style of rye bread and the onion rings were tasty, batter dipped, not breadcrumbs, and home style I believe, not frozen.

J R S.

Yelp
No need to go into a lot of detail. Just read some of the other reviews. They are from good to bad. My review regards their policy of no credit cards of Mondays. Of all the bars and restaurants in southeastern Michigan, how many don't accept a credit card one day a week. I don't remember when Marge was alive if this policy was in effect, but I doubt it. Another example of a small brained owner (Jimmy) trying to ruin his business.
google avatar

Shawn F.

Yelp
Amazing food, great daytime bartender, opens at 11am and takes credit and debit cards. Hockey memorabilia everywhere.
google avatar

Misty J.

Yelp
Stopped by here after work with my sister for a burger and beer. It did not disappoint! The bartender/server was very friendly and prompt. The burgers and fries were typical bar food, aka tasty. However my one gripe is that the fries were not salted. I get that some people don't do salt but it's like once the plate hits the table any salt you attempt to apply just bounces off. oh ps. the atmosphere is dive bar with an owner that loves hockey. It's interesting.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
For a cozy bar environment with tasty food and a place to watch the game, I've gotta give Marge's five stars. Specials are always good. You can't go wrong with burgers or grilled chicken salad. Wings and onion rings are excellent. If you're a Hockey fan, you have to check out Marge's!

Faye W.

Yelp
My husband and I were in town for a short stay we were in GrossePointe and wanted a good burger this place had good reviews so I decided to try it. The burgers were delicious you can taste the freshness I also ordered the onion rings beer battered from scratch they were so good I also placed another order. The waitress was very nice and friendly not a fancy place just your local bar and grill.

Patrick V.

Yelp
The character of Marge's Bar, and the characters at Marge's Bar - it doesn't get any better. And the food - if it's Bruce's soups or Buck's burgers and dogs - all good. Must also mention the great perch dinner's and salmon salads - popular on Friday's but available other times too. With the Coney dogs that "pop" when you bite em, gotta love the natural casing dogs, and the genuine Coney chili. I can't take it - I am headed there now! Save me a seat Rochelle!

Richard S.

Yelp
I love Marge's I would get bullied a lot in school and Marge's ever since I was 11 years old, it was a great place 2 relax; Any time I felt I needed 2 talk, the staff and everybody would understand.
google avatar

Yelp
Perch on Fridays is amazing! Prices are great! Descent beer selection. Definitely will come back! Staff was super nice :-)

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars then I would.... My husband and I were in the area for a work event and looked up on Yelp where to eat locally. This place looked good so we decided to give it a try. We walked in and sat ourselves at a bar top that had the Friday fish menu but not the normal menu. We waited about 5 minutes before a man came over and asked- what can I get you guys? we pulled the menu up off our phones and began to order to which he interrupted us and said hold on. He left the table to a larger table to take their order first. Then he returned taking our order, not a drink order. We had to track him down for drinks and then again for straws to which he brought a handful of 8-10 of them and dropped them on the table. As for our order- I ordered a sandwich with no tomatoes and onions to which he repeated. When the food arrived (to which he literally threw onto our table) it had everything on it. He never came back to ask if we needed anything. But we did overhear him tell the woman behind us who was waiting for her food that he needed her ketchup/mustard tray. She said she would need it with her food and he replied with- maybe, you can just ask for it again. We waited a good 10 min after our food was finished to get our bill. We eventually tracked him down and just handed him our card asking him to ring us up. He took another 5 minutes, while we stood around clearly in a hurry while he ignored us. He never said thank you or anything other than what do you want? We eat at a lot of restaurants, some good and some bad but this is by far the worst service that we have ever received from any restaurant before. We will not be back and we will make everyone we know aware of how rude the service is here.
google avatar

William P.

Yelp
The perch dinner is amazing! Its only available on Fridays but it is well worth the wait. Male sure you stop in and give it a try
google avatar

Tom V.

Yelp
Probably one of the best neighborhood bars in Grosse Pointe and the best place to watch a Red Wings game in the Detroit area. Not sure on all of the food as I have only had a burger..which was good.
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
I love marges!!! Their chicken fingers are to die for. I eat here with my boyfriend once or even twice a week. Always friendly staff, and great service. Chicken ceaser salad is made on Fridays and it is delicious. My boyfriend always orders a burger & fries. They don't have a huge selection of beer or liquor , that's the ONLY downfall. Other than that, fantastic.

Jim S.

Yelp
Best perch on Friday's in town. Burgers and other bar food are excellent, as well. Great place to watch a hockey game! Marge's is a Grosse Pointe landmark.

Linda C.

Yelp
Best perch dinners ever (Fridays usually), friendly atmosphere and service. Everything I've tried over the years is excellent.
google avatar

Dana P.

Yelp
I have recently begun eating meat again after a two year stint as a vegetarian, and the burger here was everything I wanted it to be! It was done perfectly and the fries were delicious. Nothing beats a cold beer, a burger and fries!

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Usually love Marge's wings and burgers.Terrible rude service tonight! Walked out and going to Irish Coffee. Monday no credit cards is odd.
