Michigan Has a Growing Wine Scene, Thanks to Climate Change - AFAR

"A producer pushing into red varieties previously considered risky for the climate, led by a winemaker who sources cold-climate Italian and Central European varieties and uses proprietary hoop houses (arched structures that can raise temperatures by up to 15 degrees) to extend the growing season by about a month. Those techniques have made reliably ripening reds commercially and artistically viable, enabling the estate to craft Italian-style blends entirely in-house even in cooler years." - Alexandra Gillespie

Out of all the winery's on the peninsula Mari is by far the best atmosphere/architecture. The building and grounds are very beautiful and peaceful. The view is equally beautiful! Their wine selection is so vast, they were very helpful describing each different type to us. We settled on trying 4 different wine types in a flight and loved each one. The flavors are all so unique. This was our favorite stop on our Old Mission wine tour.. you won't be disappointed

🌄 Mari Vineyards – Stunning Views, Exceptional Wine, and Outstanding Service Mari Vineyards is a feast for the senses. Perched atop a hill with a direct view of East Arm Grand Traverse Bay, this winery offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the region. You could sit and stare forever—the views alone are worth the visit. The wine selection leans toward the dry side, but every pour delivers on flavor and craftsmanship. Whether you're a seasoned wine lover or just exploring, you'll find something to savor. 🍷 What truly elevates the experience is the staff. They're not only friendly and welcoming, but impressively knowledgeable about the wines and the vineyard’s history. Their recommendations are spot-on, and they make you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. Beyond wine, they offer a fun variety of flavored soft drinks—mango, strawberry, orange, pineapple, and even grapefruit—which is a thoughtful touch for non-drinkers or those looking to mix things up. Their light selection of hors d'oeuvres pairs beautifully with the wine and rounds out the experience. We make it a point to stop by every time we're in the Traverse City area. Between the stunning views, relaxing atmosphere, and well-curated offerings, Mari Vineyards continues to be a highlight of our visits.

We went on the VIP tour, I highly recommend it as it's very personal. I enjoyed every moment spent here. The views are beautiful, the wine is perfect and the atmosphere is relaxing.

Let's talk about Mari's Whitefish Board! We visit Mari Vineyards every summer. They have arguably the best view of any winery, their wines are fantastic, and their terrace and lawn are dog-friendly. We always look forward to our visits to Mari. When we visit Traverse City, we habitually eat a late breakfast, an earlier dinner, and our lunches consist of wine. One lazy Monday afternoon this past summer, we were feeling a little hungry while we relaxed in the shade of Mari's terrace and took in her view. We looked over the menu, and noticed the Whitefish Board ($32). The Old Mission wineries aren't known for their food (it's a super long story), so our expectations were rather low when we ordered the Whitefish Board. Holy mackerel...or should I say...Holy whitefish!!! Ok...first of all, the platter was HUGE - far larger than we expected! And the serving of whitefish pâté was far more generous than we've ever received at any other winery serving any sort of pâté. The naan bread was warm and fresh, the crackers crisp, and the little gherkins tart but sweet. There was a tin of whitefish fillets, and a little heap of red onion. My wife and I shared the Whitefish Board, and it lasted us long enough to drink a couple glasses of wine. The whole experience was delicious and decadent. We talked about it the remained of the evening. The next day (Tuesday), we continued to talk of it, and returned for another round. On Wednesday, we didn't return, but thought about it all day long. On Thursday, we resolved to return for another, but the day grew late, and we went to dinner instead. We left Traverse City on Friday, but we made Mari the last place we visited before leaving town. We couldn't leave without enjoying one more Whitefish Board (and wine)!

Quite asthmatic and great collection of wine! Perfect for outdoor seating and enjoy Michigan charm. Wine tasting is very reasonable priced however actual bottles are quite expensive.

Google
Mari Vineyards has a lovely Mediterranean style building, and the interior is quite warm and cozy despite being fairly sizable. The staff was professional and welcoming, and the tasting flight I tried included a mix of wines and ciders. The cider I tried combined both wine and cider into one interesting drink, and it was surprisingly good. Their red wines were very drinkable with enough complexity to stay enjoyable. I thought it seemed like a really nice place with thoughtfully crafted wines. I would definitely recommend Mari to my friends if they’re in the area.

Wine flight was delicious. View of the bay was gorgeous. Lots of seating outside. Well organized staff!

Google
Wonderful vineyard, transport me to Italy, the building is a little cute castle with a lake view, wonderful art in the building. The wines are good.

Yelp
What a gorgeous location for a winery! Came here on a Wednesday late afternoon. They had a l4 wins tasting for not too bad around $20. The server helped me pick some options. They gave me a little wine tower to hold my glasses and I brought them outside to sit and drink while looking over Lake Michigan. They had great live music as well playing as you enjoyed your wine. Great experience!

Yelp
The view is AMAZING They have an amazing semi sweet reisling - nice crisp taste Service is good and they have it figured out for when they are busy
google avatar

Edita G.

Yelp
This is probably the fanciest vineyard I've been to. The building looks like a castle, the outdoors has amazing scenic views and the staff provide butler-like service,so the high price of wines on offer is well justified! Flights are pretty expensive ($24 for 3) but you get full glasses of select wines rather than tiny plastic cups,so it's worth it. Besides, all their wines are organic and the selection is quite big,so there's something for everyone. I personally really liked their semi-dry Riesling! Outdoor patio is friendly for a visit with pups! And one fun fact-we arrived as soon as they opened on a weekday by 11am,thinking we'll be the only day-drinkers there, but surprise surprise-there were at least 6 other cars full of wine enthusiasts haha. In a nutshell,I'd love to be back-and a special shoutout to Renee who helped me pick the wine I'd like to have a full glass of.

Yelp
Mari Vineyards is one of the most beautiful properties on Old Mission Peninsula! The wines are a bit pricier than at some of the other spots, but the views and priceless and the service is very professional.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
This vineyard was recommended by an Uber driver in the area. The owners are the brothers from the show, "Oak Island." This place was huge and beautiful with beautiful views and delicious wine. Highly recommend!

Warren Y.

Yelp
Great service when selecting wines to taste. Enjoyed the atmosphere in the building. Relaxing seating. Wines and food were very tasty. Beautiful views from patio and lawn seating.
google avatar

Johnny S.

Yelp
This is my favorite place on the peninsula! It is so popular that it is so hit mess on tables and service. if you catch it just right when you get a nice table by the fire, it's one of the best experiences on the Peninsula! if you catch it when there's two tour buses there and a birthday party next to the fireplaces you won't be impressed Food/appetizers is good here and the wine is good and fairly priced. Timing is everything here .
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
They have a great view, good charcuterie board, and a few good wines. I wouldn't say their wines were very good and had little flavor. The service really wasn't friendly or over accommodating. When you get there you stand in a line and they take their time to just ask you what you want. There's not really a lot of help to it, or guidance on what to do. The outside chairs could use some work- if you sit on the picnic tables it feels like you're going to crash thru. The chairs then block the view to you and it's on a steep hill.

Yelp
This was an Impromptu stop on the way to our hotel. Live music. Great haply hour. Friendly Staff who gave good dinner recommendations, thanks Kate! View was beautiful and the wine and small plates were delicious. We ordered glasses of Troglodyte (Rosso, Rosato and Bianco) and Malvasia Ambra. We recommend them all. Small plates- herb focaccia - delicious, the sweetness from the roasted onion or garlic, chefs kiss. The olive tapenade w/ricotta was also good. I ate preferred it with the focaccia bread vs toasted crostini.

Yelp
Mari Vinyars is such a peaceful little spot in Traverse City. The energy was vibrant yet calming, the space was beautiful, and the people were so kind. Left feeling totally refreshed and grounded. Definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Yelp
Mari Vineyards is one of the most beautiful places. The view alone is worth a visit. There was plenty of seating and all with a beautiful view. Everyone really enjoyed their wine and the relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Beautiful winery! Cherry wine was delicious! Easy to find and not too far into the peninsula.
google avatar

Jacob S.

Yelp
Nice view, friendly staff, over priced for what it is in my opinion. Plenty of outdoor seating, flow of the entry to the hostess station to the bar was inefficient.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Wines are decent but pricey (read overpriced) but the views are outstanding. We didn't try the food, but it looked overpriced too. The outdoor space is nice... lots of places to sit and relax. I wish the sky hadn't been so hazy the day we were here. Sip your wine slowly, relax and enjoy the view.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
Of the wineries we visited, this was the nicest setting. The building is very nice and the views are amazing. The merlot was my favorite but enjoyed our selections. We didn't have reservations but got right up to the bar to order. The patio was very nice.
google avatar

Kendra L.

Yelp
You come to MV for the gorgeous setting, not the overpriced wine from grapes that aren't from Michigan. The building, land, and views are stunning. The wine's not bad, honestly. It's pretty tasty. Most of the bottles are out of a teacher's budget :-( I really love getting wine that's all local, so to find out that they aren't a truly Michigan product was disappointing. Will it stop me from visiting when I'm in the area? Most likely not. It's too beautiful.

Erika W.

Yelp
The best view, red selection, and all estate grown. The people make this place a must visit every time.
google avatar

Yelp
The ambiance at Mari Vineyards is WONDERFUL! My three friends and I absolutely loved the location and it was perfect for a chilly day. The wine, however, was not great. I love a dry wine and every single wine in my flight tasted weak/watered down. My friend ordered a flight of white wine and also felt like it lacked flavor. If you want a fun vibe, definetely come here! If you want a delicious glass of wine, I wouldn't recommend this location.
google avatar

Whitney H.

Yelp
This is set in such a beautiful spot! They have lots of seating overlooking the bay. We spent a couple hours enjoying the view, the wine and the food. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Cassidy G.

Yelp
Beautiful winery, inside and out. Views and style were amazing. Wasn't a huge fan of the wine for the price.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Beautiful view. Wines were satisfactory except the 2022 Merlot which stood out for it's deep, delicious cherry fruit.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Best vineyard in Traverse City, would highly recommend to any locals or tourists visiting. Stunning view of the water, amazing wine, live music, friendly staff. Cannot recommend enough
google avatar

Nephtwim R.

Yelp
The vineyard and tasting room sit atop a hill overlooking the east arm of Grand Traverse Bay; you can imagine the stunning scenery. The building is reminiscent of old world Italian and the tasting room is very spacious. From the moment you enter, you are immediately greeted with friendly staff. The wine selection is extensive. My wife and I had 2 flights of 8 different wines; none disappointed.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!!! The views, the wines, the service, the ambiance, everything was perfect. Located on Old Mission Peninsula, the views are stunning. My mom is obsessed with the "The Curse of Oak Island" TV show, and the stars of that show are also the founders of this winery, so I had to bring her here. We had a larger group so we reserved the upper private terrace, with views of the beautiful East Bay. We had full table service and it was a wonderful experience. Sue took excellent care of us. She was our private guide and concierge. What a wonderful lady!!! Everything at Mari is 100% estate grown and produced. They believe in sustainability. We each tried a flight of 4 wines, and we got to choose which ones we wanted. Everything was delicious but my favorite was the 2017 Ultima Thule, which is a gorgeous red. I certainly enjoyed the white wines too and there were some lovely rosé and Rieslings. The food was delicious too. We enjoyed our meat and cheese charcuterie. Very high quality and excellent flavors. I highly recommend coming here.

Yelp
Came with my besties early on a Saturday afternoon, they were busy but not too busy where there were no seats. We sat outside since it was decent out and it so nice they had a fireplace to sit at and the views were amazing. Staff was super friendly and nice and we didn't order food just got the different wine flights. Everything was amazing.
google avatar

Jared H.

Yelp
Mari had great wine, a friendly staff, and an incredible view. The building had a very old world vibe to it and was absolutely gorgeous. Big fan.

Yelp
When we very first visited here some years ago, they were brand new. The property looked somewhat ostentatious to me from below as we drove in. BUT THEN. We tried the wines. We got to know them. We joined their wine club too... It's a lovey, gracious property, perched on top of a hill, overlooking vineyards & distant bay. Sigh... Some things have changed since CoVid & scarcity of help. You have to have a reservation for tasting or food (their snacks alone are delicious). There was a 35 minute wait for tables on the patio. You used to be able to grab any table, bring your glass from outside & your olives & marcona olives out to sit & soak up the view. Currently, you either need the reservation, or just get a glass of wine and sit in the available Adirondack chairs or picnic tables in the hillside. Which is pretty sweet. Even short staffed, they are courteous & welcoming. Their wines are SO good! I sipped a Troglodyte Rosata, so good, a deep almost orangey pink, very very good. Husband had the Row 7, pricey by the bottle, but we always love it. Special shout out to the very friendly SUE, who rang up our bottle purchase. It is a delicious way to spend a half hour or hour....so DO IT!
google avatar

Shawn S.

Yelp
Phenomenal view, Line to be serviced moves fast, clean and nice decor in bathroom, spacious options to sit outdoors, longer wait for an actual table, bees were overwhelming considering the tables were not cleaned and glasses sitting in the grass, wine tasting is a long pour :) and pretty tasty wine.
google avatar

DeMario M.

Yelp
I don't typically write bad reviews but the vibe at this place was just off. From the time we walked into the place until we left. The staff was unpleasant and unfriendly. I felt stereotyped the moment I stepped in the door. No one assisted us until we made a little noise. Then that service was just as terrible. The wine wasn't great. I've had better wine in Napa, France and Italy. Also there's more wineries along the peninsula that treat the customers way better.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
This place is beautiful go for the ambiance alone! The wine is mostly blends but I enjoyed all the reds I tried. The staff was nice and accommodating. My wife and friends enjoyed the sangria. Great place to to hang out with friends and enjoy being on Mission peninsula.
google avatar

Dee S.

Yelp
Arrived in time for Happy Hour! Busy place but they had plenty of staff to help everyone we tried two excellent glasses of wine the SIMPLICISSIMUS SPARKLING RIESLING and TROGLODYTE BIANCO both were wonderful easy drinking wines. They could easily go with a nice Thai dish or with a charcuterie board. The app were very tasty snacks to enjoy with the wines. The meatball were a nice mix of pork and beef and seasoned perfectly. The crostini was a perfect bite for an afternoon snack with a wonderful balance of flavors. This is a stop if your on Old Mission Peninsula.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Probably our favorite vineyard on the peninsula. Great wines. Everything we tried we liked and ended up buying $75 in bubbly. Great service that was fun and knowledgeable which makes all the difference. Turns out she was a friend of the family from way back...way way back. Really nice facility and it seems to mature and expand every year. Always a must and go early since it closes earlier than others.
google avatar

Abhilash T.

Yelp
Another winery, another unforgettable view in TC. This was our second stop for day one. I would recommend reservations, I think there are a lot more options inside, including a charcuterie board. We got a table outside and it was really nice weather so it wasn't a big deal. I can't remember the names of any of the wines but they were great. Flight options are the way to go in my opinion and they were very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
Nicely situated and great views from the top and by the chateau. The chateau at the vineyard looks fantastic. Think it's been renovated, we think. What a palatial building. We walked the grounds some. Inside is quite nicely done as well. A bit of a wait to get seated inside or outside. They have propane fires out on their patio. Great views of the water from up here. They have some nice selections of wines. The charcuteries ate meat heavy here too. The upper decks are closed off. They do give tours of the facilities. We skipped it today. We walked more and decided to skip out on waiting for a seat.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Excellent view and the wine was my favorite of the wineries on Mission. I tried a few different dry red wines but my favorites were the 2018 Row 7 and the 2017 Ultima Thule.

angi M.

Yelp
Great winery, beautiful building and grounds with wonderful people and amazing food and service
google avatar

Jill V.

Yelp
Lovely winery with delicious wine and wonderful views. The tastings are pricey at $22, but the pours were generous. We sat on the patio which I highly recommend as it was very comfortable and relaxing.

Buck R.

Yelp
Beautiful winery with good wines. The view from outside overlooking traverse bay is spectacular
google avatar

Tammy W.

Yelp
What a great winery! This was the second winery we came to for the day and it was awesome. The hostess was super nice and we got a spot outside. About 10-15 minutes after we sat down they saw rain coming on the radar so they moved us so we were still outside but under some cover. We got a charcuterie board to share among the 3 of us and each of us got a flight of 4 wines. The board was a great variety and complemented the wine well. The wine itself was good. Sometimes when you get flights there is at least one that's not that good - this wasn't the case here. There's also a great view here, even when it's overcast like it was for us. I'll definitely come back to this winery when I'm back in TC!!
google avatar

Vianney F.

Yelp
Food service and the landscaping was amazing. The ambiance had a great vibe. It was our first time there and will definitely come back.
google avatar

Beth P.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience today. First time visitors. My husband and I have 3 golden rescues. They sat us in the shade on the patio ; bringing plenty of water for our dogs. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. The charcuterie board and brie platter were delicious. We also enjoyed the red and white flights. Thank you for a great time, MV!
google avatar

Christy V.

Yelp
Great views and delicious and interesting wines! I loved the science / experimental aspect The woman who poured our flights was very personable and welcoming. Great experience!
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
Absolute beautiful place! They have the most friendly staff and the best outdoor space. I highly recommend the walking tour of the wine caves. What an awesome history and story. I wish I could remember our tour guides name she was the sweetest lady, retired, full of information and you could tell she loves what she does! Booking a tour, or tasting is so easy through their website and I love that you don't pay for anything until your done for the day! Can't recommend this place enough. If your on old mission and not sure what wineries to try, definitely add this one to your list. Oh and the wine was pretty good as well!
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
Mari was our first stop to visit the wineries in Traverse City and it did not disappoint! There was a bigger crowd than we expected but the wait times were never long. The sommeliers know a lot about the wines and are happy to explain anything in more detail, I got one flight of 4 wines then landed on a glass of Riesling that I loved. They also had a sample for purchase of their dessert wine, a sweet maple wine I absolutely loved, would go great with any dessert. The weather was pretty chilly and they DO require dogs to stay outside, however they were nice enough to stoke the fire with some fresh wood to keep us toasty! Thanks Mari!

Yelp
"Mari Vineyards" was my 3rd and favorite Estate Wine Tasting stop on October 23, 2019 while on my wine vacation. This winery has a "Castle" style building when driving up the road to see from afar. The parking lot and entrance is also very welcoming! This winery features a 3,000 square foot cave buried more than 10 feet underground. The outside has an upscale setting with a beautiful view on a hill overlooking the bay. There's a large patio around as well to view and relax with a glass or a bottle instead. The techniques to create craft traditional Italian style red and white wines shows here with the dedicated employees and spacious ground level tasting room. Zach was our host with the most ...His charming smile and voice was clearly spoken and not rushed for my 30 minute stay at the bar counter of tasting. He also informed us that some wines are kept at a temperature of 55 degrees . My wine tasting menu of 5 samples cost $8.00. Cheers to: 1.) 2017 Chardonnay - Toasty, Nutty, Creamy ($10 a glass, $30 bottle) 2.) 2016 Scriptorium Riesling - Peach, Evolving, Halbtrocken ($8 a glass, $24 bottle) 3.) 2018 Late Harvest Riesling - Tangerine, Ripe Apple, Spatlese. ($9 a glass, $28 bottle). This Riesling was featured the Wine of The Month therefore I received a coupon for 10% off my bottle purchase. 4.) 2018 Troglodyte Rosato - Light Cherry, Juicy Apple. Fun ($7 a glass, $20 bottle). 5.) 2018 Troglodyte Rosso - Ripe Black Cherry, Balanced. ($8 a glass or $28 bottle). All my choices above were refreshing and delightful while snacking on crackers along the way.. The palette tasting way of wine. The weather was overcast with a light rain therefore I was not able to sit outside and enjoy the view of the vineyards. Wine Flights: 3 for $15 enjoy 3 or 4 two ounce pours of your choice. I certainly hope to come back here again, to enjoy more wine and sit outdoors in September 2020 for my Birthday! Zach was very knowledgeable and gave me a small "free" taste of a Ice Wine of Riesling, with a price tag of $90.00. Take a Tour of the Winery & Tasting = $100.00 /2 people Walking Tour = $50.00 / 2 people. They also offer a Wine Club. They offer a Seasonal Food Menu of Charcuterie Meat & Cheese Boards, small snacks, and even complimentary juice boxes for little ones. (I say no kiddies and find a sitter). ENJOY The Hours or Day of Wine Tasting Parents! I highly recommend this elegant winery because it is designed with beauty, areas of history to enjoy plus a relaxing atmosphere with many refreshing wine selections.

Yelp
I visited in the re-opening period (post COVID) and didn't have a reservation. Staff made marks on the grassy lawn for folks to sit socially distanced from each other. I waited in line to buy a glass of wine. Since I've never tried their wine, it was very hard to make a decision and I felt like I was missing out on the experience of tasting their wines. However, I explained to the staff member what I liked at the window, and they made a fabulous rec- the 2017 Trogolodyte Bianco. It is a fabulous white blend- great if you enjoy Sauv Blanc. Also, the view is spectacular. It's a must visit. I'd give them 4.5 stars but the wine quality + view made this worth the stop!
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Beautiful vineyard, I visited Mari Vineyards this past fall. The views are gorgeous and wine is delicious. It felt like a vacation outside of the US. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Lola T.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed this winery. My family and I booked the tour as well which was absolutely fantastic. we had a wine flight and ordered some appetizers. It was great. my only issue is that I bought $200 or so in merchandise including wine I did not realize until I got home that I tipped them 20% just for the bottles of wine and merchandise. It seems a little absurd to me to ask somebody to tip for me to buy product. I have absolutely no issue tipping for the service for the wine flight and the food but this is a stretch.

Hannah B.

Yelp
Mari Vineyards is worth going to for the views alone! Incredible views of the water with a feel of being in Italy. I will say that the wine is mostly dry, however, the staff did a great job of helping pick wines for a flight for sweeter wine drinkers. The price of a flight is a little pricy but I 100% recommend this place for the ambiance and dry wines if that is your thing!
