This was my first time visiting Maria Empanada, my feelings are mixed about this one. The customer service was amazing. As soon as I walked up to the counter I was greeted warmly. There were many options from empanadas to desserts. I decided to go with the Chorizo, Breakfast with Ham, and Spinach. The spinach card said it had Buffalo style mozzarella blend, which gave me the impression it would be spicy. It was not spicy it tasted like cheesy cooked spinach wrapped in dough, there was nothing spectacular about this one. The Breakfast with Ham Empanada had many flavors however they were all very flat, no specific flavor reached out. It left me wishing that it was seasoned a bit better. Although the first two empanadas did not wow me, the Chorizo provided a nice texture and decent flavors. The empanadas would be better if they all were seasoned better to add more depth to the palate, the potatoes were a bit mushy it would have been nice if they had a crunch to them, and the empanadas sitting under a heat lamp lost their nice crisp bite that I am sure they once had when made fresh. The last item I tried was the Chocolate Alfajor. Essentially a chocolate covered shortbread cookie. Let me tell you, it was so delicious. The shortbread was a softer version of the Girl Scout trefoil cookie, it had the texture of a brownie. It also had a filling either a rich caramel or some sort of chocolate between the cookies then covered in chocolate. It was not too sweet, but it satisfied my infinite chocolate craving so kudos for that. They had many empanada options, vegan options included. Since the chorizo empanada was good, I might make another stop on another day to try the other flavors. The pricing is very affordable you can leave out the door with 1 empanada for just $5. I probably would not bring friends, family, or make it a point to refer this restaurant. However, if I am on a budget and needing a quick bite to eat in the area, I can see myself coming here again.
