Kroger Sells Mariano’s Brand, Leaving the Fate of the Grocery Store’s Name in Peril | Eater Chicago

"A Chicago-based grocery chain founded by Bob Mariano in 2010 that operates roughly 44 stores across the city and suburbs. After being acquired by Kroger in 2015, the chain became part of a regulatory-focused asset shuffle: Kroger agreed to sell 14 Illinois stores and the chain's name to the operator of Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly as part of a larger $1.9 billion transaction to divest 413 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers. Known for in-store amenities such as a bar with live piano music and for launching a local-heritage concept called Dom's Kitchen & Market (a nod to Dominick DiMatteo), the chain’s future branding and footprint remain uncertain because the specific locations included in the sale have not been disclosed and several stores could be rebranded under the buyer’s banners." - Ashok Selvam

I recently had an excellent shopping experience at Mariano’s, and I couldn't be more pleased. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the store's spotless cleanliness, which made for a comfortable and enjoyable shopping environment. One of the standout features of Mariano’s is their competitive pricing. The value for money is exceptional, allowing me to get everything I needed without breaking the bank. The aisles are well-organized, making it easy to find products quickly and efficiently. Overall, I give Mariano’s a solid 5 out of 5 stars. If you're looking for a grocery store that offers great prices in a clean and welcoming setting, Mariano’s is the place to go!

After work, tired, half blind (with only one contact lens, lost the other one earlier in the day), I stopped at overpriced Mariano's to grab a few things. Completely by mistake, I didn't scan a bag of dog food. I was buying 7 or 8 items, scanned them all or so I thought! Bag of dog food did not scan. The lady at the register helped me out. I scanned it, paid for it, and proceeded to the exit. The rude security guy stopped me, saying "we know the game, next time pay, or you won't be allowed in here". What?? I don't know what he was trying to accomplish by making me feel like I was a dog food thief! Great job! Thanks a lot.

I really wanted to love this Mariano’s. I’ve given this location nearly 50 chances, and I can honestly say it’s just not worth it. The produce is often old and overpriced. The butcher area has a bad smell, and the store overall feels poorly maintained. But what’s most disappointing are the managers. They make it clear how much they hate their jobs—and it shows. Instead of making customers feel valued, they act as if helping you is a burden. It makes you wonder why they choose to work somewhere that makes them so miserable. The store hours say they close at 10 p.m., but don’t expect full service. The deli and butcher are often closed by 8 p.m. without notice. To be fair, there are a few gems. Richard at fast checkout is fantastic, the security team is very friendly, and the sushi department is always kind. But that’s not enough to make up for the overall poor experience. Maybe it’s time for Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, or Pete’s Market to open nearby—where shoppers could expect fresh produce, excellent service, and a clean store. Ukrainian Village deserves that. I won’t spend another penny here. Stay away.

Great neighborhood store that packs in plenty of options in a smaller footprint: Starbucks, fresh flowers, butcher, produce, bakery, pharmacy and more. An important staple in the Ukrainian Village. Plenty of parking if you don’t mind going up the ramp to the roof. There has been a few security concerns lately but management quickly addressed them by increasing personnel and CCTV cameras

Gave this Mariano’s a chance many times over the years and it consistently remains disappointing. Very overpriced and the meat/produce are frequently old and not fresh. Recently stopped by and out of 6 items, 3 were rotten when I got home (steaks, corn cobs, and Brie cheese). Honestly save yourself the hassle and just go to jewel osco on Ashland. The selection is better and the prices are cheaper too

Went to Mariano’s store today JULY 4th 2025! To pick up medication to find out it was closed walked in in my pajamas & the security was profiling me discriminating thinking I was stealing something. I bought whipping cream & cheese! He than went to the front of the store asking to see my purse to grab it thinking I was stealing something when I was a paying customer. The security is a racial profiling people for no reason and I will be calling corporate and filing a complaint

Very convenient and good communication, and lots of food. It was surprising to see so much sushi and bento. The cashier is very kind, and this is a very comfortable supermarket.
