Kroger Sells Mariano’s Brand, Leaving the Fate of the Grocery Store’s Name in Peril | Eater Chicago

"A Chicago-based grocery chain founded by Bob Mariano in 2010 that operates roughly 44 stores across the city and suburbs. After being acquired by Kroger in 2015, the chain became part of a regulatory-focused asset shuffle: Kroger agreed to sell 14 Illinois stores and the chain's name to the operator of Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly as part of a larger $1.9 billion transaction to divest 413 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers. Known for in-store amenities such as a bar with live piano music and for launching a local-heritage concept called Dom's Kitchen & Market (a nod to Dominick DiMatteo), the chain’s future branding and footprint remain uncertain because the specific locations included in the sale have not been disclosed and several stores could be rebranded under the buyer’s banners." - Ashok Selvam

Stephanie Izard’s Duck Duck Goat temporarily closes after a fire | Eater Chicago

"The Chicago-area grocery brand is facing potential changes after a leaked internal memo in which parent company Kroger expressed concern about a vague brand identity and the chain's failure to break the top 100 in brand value rankings. Since Kroger acquired the chain for $800 million in 2015, on-site dining options were removed and more self-checkout stalls were added across its 44 Chicagoland locations." - Naomi Waxman

Google
Stars only for staff and location. This store largely struggles from it's layout, especially at the entrance where people leaving and returning their carts have to walk past the only entrance to the store, creating a two-way bottleneck. The entrance marked on the north side of the building has been closed for as long as I've seen it but there's never been a sign indicating as such. Produce is often moldy or not stocked. While it's true that the store is small and limited, they have such a small GF/alternative diet section that I'll often go to corner stores instead. If demand isn't there, that's understandable but below is a picture of when I couldn't buy GF bread for about a week because it was constantly sold out/not re-stocked. Plus they no longer stock the GF corndogs.

Google
My girlfriend and I are new to the city and Mariano's is our closest grocery store. Since we are both dedicated vegetarians we were skeptical about the freshness and quality of the produce. But Marcos and Missael assured us that they have nothing but the best and anything else would be an insult. Not to mention how clean the produce section was. Thank you Marcos and Missael, we will be coming back!

Mariano’s on Chicago Ave is one of my favorite grocery stores I go to. Always good deal, always good food and most importantly fresh food. Highly recommend, even the vibe and atmosphere inside is different than in any other store.

Google
I really wanted to love this Mariano’s. I’ve given this location nearly 50 chances, and I can honestly say it’s just not worth it. The produce is often old and overpriced. The butcher area has a bad smell, and the store overall feels poorly maintained. But what’s most disappointing are the managers. They make it clear how much they hate their jobs—and it shows. Instead of making customers feel valued, they act as if helping you is a burden. It makes you wonder why they choose to work somewhere that makes them so miserable. The store hours say they close at 10 p.m., but don’t expect full service. The deli and butcher are often closed by 8 p.m. without notice. To be fair, there are a few gems. Richard at fast checkout is fantastic, the security team is very friendly, and the sushi department is always kind. But that’s not enough to make up for the overall poor experience. Maybe it’s time for Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, or Pete’s Market to open nearby—where shoppers could expect fresh produce, excellent service, and a clean store. Ukrainian Village deserves that. I won’t spend another penny here. Stay away.

Google
I stopped coming to this Mariano's when they started construction on their rooftop parking lot approximately one million years ago. There has been glacial progress with this project making parking an anxiety-inducing task even before you get to your main task of grocery shopping. Speaking of which, there are barely enough grocery carts at this location for their shoppers. Godspeed and good luck if you chose to dare!

Google
I recently had an excellent shopping experience at Mariano’s, and I couldn't be more pleased. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the store's spotless cleanliness, which made for a comfortable and enjoyable shopping environment. One of the standout features of Mariano’s is their competitive pricing. The value for money is exceptional, allowing me to get everything I needed without breaking the bank. The aisles are well-organized, making it easy to find products quickly and efficiently. Overall, I give Mariano’s a solid 5 out of 5 stars. If you're looking for a grocery store that offers great prices in a clean and welcoming setting, Mariano’s is the place to go!

Jerry M.

Google
Produce not very fresh, frequently out of basics. Prices are high for a neighborhood store and the staff are rude and disrespectful. Sad, it could be a great place like Agora. Also, handicapped parking is frequently abused by people who don’t have handicapped tags. Management doesn’t seem to care.

Stephen Augle S.

Google
Great selection the staff is quite friendly. Over all the store is clean and very well stocked. Management is always within an ear shot away. Great job guys keep up the good work this is a 5 star review.

Yelp
Over the past 8 months, I've been traveling the country and the world for the best grocery store rotisserie chicken, and the midwest was my last untapped market in the US. My first stop in Chicago was directly to this Mariano's, as the bird came highly recommended. I took it just down the street to Superior Park for consumption. This was tissi number 92, and I'm putting this journey on the backburner once I hit 100. When I sat in the park and set up the tripod, my beloved bird between my legs, I found myself getting a little emotional... but I'm gonna let the pen work on that on another day. A whole Mariano's tissi ran $7.99 and it ended up landing at 7.6/10, which currently ranks it 47th out of 94 grocery store birds I've tried. Yelp
I made a quick stop for a few things this afternoon. They have a small street level parking lot and a 2nd story lot that offers fantastic views of the city skyline. I was lucky enough to snag a quick and easy first floor spot. The store was bustling but not over crowded. It was easy to shop as everything was organized nicely. However, I was a bit disappointed in the produce section. I searched everywhere twice but couldn't find a bag of grapefruit. It wasn't the end of the world but I was really craving that citrus burst. I did pick up a bag of those cute little clementine oranges. They are fresh and the perfect plan B. I used the lane that had a staff member. The line moved quickly. The cute girl with pink hair was so helpful. I had been given a gift card, so I used that plus another form of payment. She was quick to help with that with ease. I liked that the store was organized and clean. The floral department and bakery areas were so pretty. If I am ever back in this neighborhood when I need groceries, I would not mind shopping here again.

Yelp
Tried several times over the past four months to get an answer from corporate about the reason behind their security guards aggressive and unnecessary comments towards me on Cbristmas Eve. Still no response other than "we are still looking into it". Not surprised that a company with this lack of attentiveness has hired a sub-par security company. Havent been back since the incident and have no plans on returning.

Yelp
This place discriminated against my dad because he is Latino. A white lady, potentially a manager, grabbed the beer out of his cart and said she won't sell it to him. When he asked why, she replied it was because he didn't have an ID. This assumption was wrong and based in racism. Needless to say we will not be returning.

Mark O.

Yelp
NEVER to ALMOST NEVER do you have baskets for those of us who actually LIVE in the neighborhood, despite behind given feedback online and in person by PLENTY of us! Ridiculous. The few blocks more to Jewel is more tempting with each passing day. This one small standard that is actually within your control not even lived up to. More than the guys behind the seafood and meat counter that make you feel like you are cumbersome to their day (especially the seafood guy who is just rude, always to everyone) or on the other extreme the self-checkout lady that thinks she has to be everyone's friend and help them even when they don't ask. It all stems from leadership. It's just sad. Provide baskets for crying out loud. It's low hanging fruit and you can't even deliver to that standard. BASKETS. BASKETS. BASKETS!!

Aaron S.

Yelp
Apparently the Kroger corporation cannot afford to provide customers with the smaller shopping baskets or just refuses to do so. Besides that the store is cluttered and the staff is curt.

Thank you for my solar eclipse glasses at the very last minute! A historic event. 5 stars for the moon.

Yelp
Inappropriate/racist employee alert: This Mariano's has always sucked but I've lived nearby since it's opened so I have always come to it here and there. Today it reached historic level of bad when I had a terrible interaction with one of the Mariano's employees. He had a line of carts that he pushed into the elevator with me on the way down to the store from the second floor parking lot. He started to make small talk asking me if I was from chicago and when I said yes I am he started telling me how he thinks it's so tough for white people in chicago to find jobs and how they really have to know someone (this person was white as am I). I said "I disagree" and tried to stop the conversation but that didn't happen. He said a few more things and I said a sarcastic "good luck with that" and quickly exited the elevator and reported the interaction to a supervisor. The employee who I was reporting followed me over and was lingering behind me saying "I'm just having a bad day" which added another layer of cringe to the situation. I was disgusted by all of it and I'll never come back to this location ever again I've had enough.

Yelp
I'm an instacart shopper it was first time doing an online pay order. the wonderful person at the selfcheck out helped me somuch without there help i might still be there. thanks for going above and beyond!

Yelp
Yikes, those last few reviews are super harsh! I came here to do some Xmas dinner shopping and it was ok. It was only by chance too! I left something at The Rookery down the street and wanted to get it before the place closed for the holiday. Just happened to notice Mariano's while I was visiting on Friday. Lots of samples on a Sunday afternoon. We asked the deli guy if they sold veggie sides big enough for 5 or 6, like catering, and he told us to check online. We also bought a gift card for another store, and we HOPE it's not one of those that has been taken and scanned in a card scam. We took one of the middle cards to be 'safe'. Except for a really high kombucha bottle, we found a lot of what we were looking for, and helpful staff in the wine department.

Yelp
I like this grocery store! They have a good variety of items and I was able to find things that I like. Things are overall affordable, they also have reduced-price clearance items. Parking was very convenient- they have a rooftop parking lot on the 2nd floor and you take an elevator down to the 1st floor to the store. I had a great experience at this store and would visit often!
google avatar

Betsy H.

Yelp
This is my least favorite Mariano's location. The other locations are larger and cleaner. Good selection of cheeses and baked goods, otherwise no better than other grocery stores. I came down on elevator 2 which really stunk today. Also found bad smells by the "fresh" fish area. Isles are crowded.

Yelp
I really love grocery shopping, but this location has some challenges. It's design is awkward, parking lot very small and about half the spots are time limited (15 minutes), and there were no baggers so the lines moved slowly. I did see staff tidying up, which was nice. I got a hearty & fresh salad from the salad bar. And the checker in my lane, Rosa, was very pleasant and helpful. My biggest complaint was there we no prices listed on some of the produce, aside from ones that read like ".99 with Mariano's card"... but I don't have a card! So, what will those blackberries set me back? I don't know, but I am guessing a lot more than .99 cents. So I didn't buy anything without a price. And I skipped all the sale items, since I don't have a Mariano's card and it makes me grumpy to pay full-price when it's on sale. But only on sale for special card holders. So, I'll stick with my local Jewel, Aldi, Pete's, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods... none of those shops require special cards to get the sale prices. And they have plenty of free lot parking that is not limited to 15 minutes.

Yelp
The food is pricey, but the pharmacy is wonderful. Specifically, the pharmacist Bobby took the time to confirm with my insurance company that a ceertain vaccine was covered completely. He was unable to get through to the company initially, so he actually called me back later once he was able to confirm the information. He was wonderful, patient, kind and funny! Highly recommend!

Kierstn S.

Yelp
This is the single worst Mariano's in the city. The store is dirty, there is a strong stench coming from the meat and seafood department, they are constantly out of common products, the layout of the store is terrible so that every checkout line is essentially in the aisles, and employees do nothing to assist. Truly awful. I would give zero stars if I could.
google avatar

Jeremiah C.

Yelp
Nice, clean, well organized, friendly staff, and well stacked. But I'm here to give a huge kudos and thanks to the staff at the pharmacy! I've transferred my meds to this pharmacy and I couldn't be happier. The staff is so knowledgeable, answer any question I may have, they all always have a great attitude, they work great together as well, always positive, and willing to help. Also as a side note, most medications are cheaper in the Mariano's pharmacies. The employees are all friendly and remember your name when you go back multiple times like me. The best part about shopping at Mariano's is being able to pick up or drop off your prescriptions. The produce area is fantastic and fully stocked. Yes, it can get really crowded at the deli and meat counters but they have such great brands. I am lucky enough to have two stores near me. Keep up the great work Mariano's Fresh Market.

Yelp
They have a lot of sections inside. Some of their inventory was already empty. Some have less products and some are not organized well. They should arrange it and fill it immediately. So the customer will be satisfied with their service. I also see some dirt on the floor. They should have a proper cleaning on their floor. The service on the counter was too slow. You will have to wait a lot of minutes if there is a long line. I don't like their service. But they have good products. Some are at a cheaper and affordable price. Some products are too expensive but not worth the price. Overall I'm not happy with this grocery store. I just gave this a 3 stars rating for the quality of their place and their service.

Yelp
I love Mariano's for the selection, quality and reasonable prices. Come on a sunday morning and pick up a mimosa to sip while you do your weekly shopping. It's a Kroger market so it's consistently good quality and has interesting options for pre-prepared food. They tend to have pretty good samples as well, featuring unique items or local beers and spirits. The selection is wonderful as you might imagine and I like how they have adopted some time saving things, such as the separate counters if you just want some sliced turkey or just a burger patty....then, you don't have to wait in a huge line behind someone who wants 10 pork tenderloins and 20 specifically picked chicken breasts or whatever. This one also has a wine bar and other areas where you can order food and drinks and sit down.  I do not love the fact that you're basically sitting in an aisle at the wine area, but it was pretty full, so perhaps others don't have this issue. I do not recommend the click pick-up program. I have used it twice now and consistently been underwhelmed. They have forgotten multiple items (despite charging me for them...) and the shoppers are not great at picking produce, I ended up with some pretty sad looking shallots and zucchini last time. So while we will continue to shop here happily, I will be doing the shopping myself to ensure I get exactly what I want and need. All in all a good store, but try to go on an off time since it's super busy and I suspect will remain so for the foreseeable future!
google avatar

Yelp
Super exclusive! I came in here, and was astonished to see that someone was playing the grand piano in the entryway of this grocer. I was even more astonished to see the prices! It seems that this is one of those grocers that makes you sign up with their shoppers' clubs, where they can track your every purchase with a doodad on your key ring. If you opt not to have the key fob, then they get to charge crazy prices, or not even disclose the price that they're going to charge. I came in looking for a sandwich and some single beers. I could only find six-packs at this particular location. I'm not getting a sixer to sit out on your front porch and listen to the classical music on the piano. The player didn't even know any honky-tonk piano. So I had to opt out of the beer. Which might have been for the best. I ended up getting a turkey sandwich that costs as much as something I'd order in a restaurant elsewhere. It was dry and lackluster. At least they had some good places to sit and read the paper while I scarfed down my overpriced sandwich.
google avatar

Sebastian S.

Yelp
Coming here is a lot of fun for me. The staff are friendly and give nice treatment to their customers. The shop is okay and also the worker. Every time I come here, which is every other 5 day, the workers appear to be happy. They will treat you nicely. They also have time when you need anything. Although they seem busy you can ask them questions and they will answer you immediately regarding their products and location. I'm so grateful every time I come here since they assist me. So the customer service was great. Their products were good. You can find any products you want. They have local and branded products that have a cheaper and expensive price. The inventory was organized well. I highly recommend this grocery store.

Yelp
I do not shop at Mariano's often but I have stopped in on rare occasions at other locations. Sorry Mariano's but I'm a Jewel - Osco guy because I am more accustomed to it. However, since I am now a holder of a Mariano's card I figure that I will try to visit more, plus this location is closer to me than Jewel - Osco and open later than Pete's Fresh Market near my neighborhood. I was actually overwhelmed when I initially visited this Mariano's because of what it consisted of. Upon entering the main entrance, there is a cafe (Vero) which sells breakfast, pastries, coffee and espresso drinks, as well as offers seating and free Wi-Fi. Other than the onsite butcher and deli area, there were a few worker booths with food items set up in the area. During my visit, I felt as though I were at a crowded farmers market due to the congestion of customers in the way as I tried to view the items featured in its hot bar, and at the booths. While in the bakery, I felt like a kid in a candy store, yet very observant of their items. I did see several pies and cakes that you can not find at a Jewel-Osco and loved that there are half-pies which is something else you cannot find at Jewel-Osco. And lastly, I took notice of its aisle strictly for beer in wine. As for parking, parking is very lackluster at this location because it offers so little, which is a win for the Jewel-Osco nearby in Wicker Park because it offers more parking. Most of the parking space is rooftop parking which is about the length of this Mariano's front-to-back, side-to-side. One thing I did love about its rooftop parking was the view of the beautiful Chicago skyline from a distance, but that is about it. Other than that, it is your typical Mariano's store that seems to be designed for Ukrainian Village neighborhood only. Thomas G

Yelp
This store is consistently a terrible experience. The selection is far more limited than other Mariano's, yet it is ALWAYS out of popular items (for example, the old fashioned bacon). The deli counter is reliably understaffed by people with no sense of promptness or customer service. The parking lot is terrible and somehow always full of people who can't drive; I'm shocked no one has run me over with their car yet. The elevators are unbearably slow. Once you're in the store, it's always packed with the slowest-moving shoppers you can imagine (all of whom are pushing around carts because they never have hand baskets available, adding to the congestion). Good luck ever running in for something quick. Contrary to any semblance of good taste, in the evenings they have a DJ (????) blasting hip hop throughout the store at the volume usually reserved for actual hip hop concerts, which I'm pretty sure no one asked for when they're picking through produce, and serves only to exacerbate the anxiety of being inside a place that sucks that much. AGAIN, THEY ARE ALWAYS OUT OF HAND BASKETS. WHY. WHYYYYYYY. This is the closest grocery store to my house, but I'm never going back. I would rather go to the DMV. See ya at Whole Foods.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
This location has really declined in the last couple years. The selection is really limited, many things aren't priced correctly or at all, there's always huge carts and boxes in the aisles and I'm certain the freezers aren't cold enough. On the bright side, I rarely encounter an employee who isn't pleasant.
google avatar

Bizzle Z.

Yelp
Never sat in the parking lot to write a review but.. here goes! I wondered why they had such bad reviews but now, I get it. They just don't care. About anything. At all. Shopped for an hour with my toddler: wiped the cart down/wearing masks/don't touch anything/"we'll be outta here soon". About to proceed to check out and hear ONE announcement, "We are only taking cash, our credit system is down. There are ATMs near the front." So I am expected to pay (atm fee) to shop here? Asked on my way out "Yeah". A true manager would give a $5 credit, work to get someone to more than 4 lanes (which are backed up all the way to the back of the store). Maybe even said, "we can hold your groceries" or that they were "sorry about that". Nope. Nada. Nobody cares here. Lost 3 loyal customers. See me later

Yelp
What a disappointing and appalling experience. I went to marianos today and happened to go in search of some produce when I saw a woman sampling cherries from different bags. Sticking your fingers In bags and in your mouth at a grocery store isn't acceptable during normal times and during Covid... worse! Employees were alerted and no one had the nerve to say anything to the woman. I watched as she ate from different bags for AT LEAST 5 minutes. She was there before I arrived and stayed after I left. No one approached her during this time and one employee said "yeah I know" when she was approached. You know?! Disgusting. I won't be going there again and I've alerted others of the same. Apparently it's a free for all in the produce area.

Yelp
When I came here there were only a few people inside. I grabbed a cart and started to pick my needs. I went first to the cereal section. There are a lot of different brands and flavors of cereals. I just choose 5 backs of cereal with different flavors. Then I went to the dairy section. I bought a bottle of milk, bottled chocolate, Milo, Powdered milk , and chocolate powder. Then I bought Mayonnaise, Nutella and Peanut Butter. After that I bought a box of chocolates and candies. I also bought marshmallows and gummies. I also went to the fruit section. I bought apples, bananas, lemons, strawberries, oranges and berries. After that I went to the counter to pay for my purchase. They put it in a nice bag. I bought everything I need.
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
My mom wants to buy groceries for our mini store. So I came here in the morning and started picking on the list. She gave me the list in a notebook. I went first to the soap section. I bought soap, liquid soap, shampoo, colgate powder soap and many more. Then I went to the can section to buy seafood and meat cans. Then I went to the dairy section to buy chocolate, candies, yogurt, milk and chocolate bottles. I laso grab some cookies and chips. Then I went to the drinks section to buy soda, soft drinks and beer. Lastly, I went to the seafood and meat section and bought 5 kilos of it. I can say that I bought all of the list. The only problem is there are long lines at the counter and it took 20 minutes before my turn.
google avatar

Yelp
They redesigned this Mariano's location about a year ago as a reaction to the Kroger acquisition. RIP Mariano's. Now the aisles are tighter, smaller, and more cramped (yes, I know I said the same thing 3 ways!). It was uncomfortable to shop here months ago, but with COVID-19, it's a disaster. There is no separation between guests. The meat counter guys rarely wear their face masks. All of the entrances and exits are blocked except for one. So we all have to enter and leave through the same door by passing each other. Isn't this a fire hazard too that they boarded up the entrance on Chicago Ave?
google avatar

Yelp
Worst Mariano's in town. The absolute worst pre made food, worst staff, worst layout. What a complete mess!
google avatar

Nathan L.

Yelp
I came here in the afternoon after I cleaned our house. We have no stock of food so I went there to have some groceries. I grabbed one cart and started to purchase our needs. I purchased products that we need in our kitchen and in our bathroom. After that I bought chips, chocolate, candy and cookies for my kids. Aside from that I also bought bottled milk, milk powder, peanut butter, nutella, sliced bread, cereals and many more. Some of my needs are already sold. They should fill it immediately. I spent one hour before I finished purchasing. I went to the counter and luckily there were no long lines there. The counter staff was quick in doing her job. I did not buy everything I needed so I gave this a 4 stars rating.

Yelp
Just on here to give a quick shout out to my cashier who checked my groceries out today. I was having a bit of an off day today, but needed to stop into the grocery store to get some items for dinner. I was in the store around 9:30AM, and my cashier, Andrea, was an absolute delight. She introduced herself by name, told me she'd be taking care of me today, commented on some of my items, and was just so lovely and personable. She provided a real human connection - even behind her (properly worn) mask - in a time where we are all feeling a bit disconnected. She really turned my day around and deserves a shout out, kudos, pat on the back, all of the above. Thank you, Andrea!

Yelp
Worst customer service ever! Clueless management. Witnessing an elderly person with a full cart being denied at the register, because apparently it's closing?? At 8.45??? You are open till 10 and you are still ringing up customers on the line. Why not make an exception and ring one last one???? Self checkout is not intended for that many items, let alone elderly. If your employees need to leave and rush out, management steps in. In case some employees have 0 common sense. Maybe someone has to be trained more. Or don't be open till 10 if your registers are closing at 8.45. People don't know that. The whole situation was unacceptable

Yelp
Nightmare nightmare nightmare. Never stepping into a Mariano's again. No room for your cart as you shop, tiny aisles, and the parking... oh my god. Want to park by the entrance? Nope, full - there aren't many spots. Want to park upstairs? Sure, but you have to walk to the other side of the building if you can't get a spot by the door, since there is only one (you won't). Okay, you're in the clear. Wait, no - get in a crowded, shopping cart filled elevator (used by customers AND employees doing cart runs), or walk downstairs, that leads outside to the street, and THEN go in via the main entrance. The "Grand Reopening" sign will lead you to believe it's renovated and clean - yikes. Never would I have guessed this is a new or upgraded grocery store. I think they threw the sign up Family Dollar style to get you inside. The staff was the one redeeming quality. The cashier and bagger talked with us a bit and were very kind, and considering they work for a soul-crushing corporate entity that ruins grocery stores, I was grateful. Bummer. Steer clear. Chicago can't get this grocery store thing down.

Yelp
I'm a really big fan of Mariano's in terms of quality. The fruits and vegetables are usually pretty fresh, with the exception of this one time I tried to get sun gold grape tomatoes. They were moldy but I got a refund, so all is well! They usually have weekly specials on meats. Last week, I got NY strip for $9/lb. They're originally $16/lb. I do like their gelato. It's not as good as Black Dog, but for $3.50, you get a giant cup of gelato. I also recommend trying their foccacia. I like the jalapeño cheddar despite the fact that they used canned jalapenos. My only complaint is that the employees are completely clueless. I've learned to be self sufficient and to roam the aisles on my own instead of being directed to a wrong aisle. Some of the cashiers don't seem to take notice of my existence, but I shouldn't take that personally.

Yelp
So...This particular Mariano's location has always been EXTREMELY sub-par (compared to their other locations), but now that Kroger took over, this location has nose-dived much further. Granted, all of the Mariano's locations have really suffered and gone way down-hill since they were bought by Kroger (and seem to only get worse and worse every time I give them another chance and reluctantly go into one of their stores), but this particular location is ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING now. If I didn't know better, I would say that it looks like they are liquidating their inventory because they are getting ready to shut down and go out of business. The store is filthy, the floors are dirty with rusty water stains, half of the shelves are empty (to be fair, that's an exaggeration, it's more like 10% of their shelves are empty, but I'm on a roll with this rant, so bear with me), the customer service is nonexistent (Jewel LITERALLY has better customer service...JEWEL!!!), their selection and variety is severely lacking, and the quality of basically all of their fresh food (deli, meat, produce, bakery, salad bar, hot food bar, etc.) is extremely poor. It also appears that (as part of the Kroger take-over) they have now introduced a line of pre-packaged, ready-to-eat meals that look disgusting...Not sure if they thought that this would play well in Chicago, but I doubt it will, at least not with me...Yuck. It's a shame, especially since when the Mariano's chain originally opened (about 10 years ago?), it was great! It was a higher-end version of the main-stream grocery chains, and I loved shopping there, but those days have apparently come and gone. It's also a shame because I live down the street from this Mariano's location, so it would be a great location for me and the other people in the West Town/Ukranian Village neighborhood, if it wasn't such a rat-hole. Now, if I want to go to a nearby grocery store, I just go to Pete's Fresh Market on the corner of Madison and Western. Although the immediate area around Pete's Fresh Market is admittedly a little sketchy, they really do a good job with just about everything at that location. The quality of the management and staff, as well as the quality of the products are shockingly good. The store is also very clean and well laid out. PRO TIP: Forget Mariano's and drive the extra 3 minutes to go to Pete's.

Yelp
Want an open market to find the top quality ingredient for your secret recipe? Look no more further. The Mariano's will give you fresh foods on your table. The prices of fruits and vegetables are affordable than other casual markets nearby. The store features the largest selection of vegan yogurts (non-dairy) condiments and ice creams at an affordable fixed price. They also have a roof deck that serves as a restaurant and greenhouse. Different families are gathering to bond or just relaxed and enjoy the view of a busy city outside. There are food courts everywhere and also accommodate your children interest since they have a cute cars-carts for shopping at this place. There is organic food for those healthy eaters already cook and ready to serve food. The busy population of the market every day keeps the place in full every hour pass by.They are open for business for the whole week from 7:00 A.M to 9:00 P.M, unless Friday, where they open around 8 o'clock. Their staff and employees are friendly with a welcoming environment that people were, willing to come back to have some good time. Overall this market is the place to explore and buy. It will differently exceed your expectation. Deeply love the Mariano's and recommended for everyone!

Yelp
This Mariano's used to be much better before Kroger took over. This place is becoming run-down these days, substandard to Jewel. When you walk in you may get this image of a more upscale store because of the gelato stand and bunched roses at the entrance, but that impression quickly changes as you start looking closer or shop here on weekly basis. Often, shelves are empty, gives you a vibe of grocery stores in former communist countries. Very basic things are not re-stocked and cannot be counted on. I have bought meat a few times that smelled rotten and had to return it. I was told that it was "oxidized". How does chicken oxidize? My cat smelled it and walked away from it. I have also bought several rotisserie chickens that were either bloody inside or so dry that they felt like tree bark and fused to the bone. Often times bagged produce has several pieces of rotten or moldy fruit or veggies in them. Mind you, this store is not discount price. I have to return something almost every time I come here because something is wrong with it. The coolers and freezers are broken and dirty. The lines are very long and the basic arrangement of the store is kind of chaotic and stressful. The small shopping carts are always missing or in the parking lot. Often times they put a promotional island right where people come into the store/get carts/get into elevator, creating a serious bottle-necking issue and crabby people. Last time I had something to eat from the deli, I had to return it. The tables at the cafe are dirty and getting the attention of staff at the cafe bar is difficult. The bathrooms are dirty and there is a line usually. Oh also the parking space is not pedestrian or cyclist friendly. The cars coming down the ramp from the rooftop will not slow down. I WANT TRADER JOE'S TO TAKE OVER!!!! PLEEEEEAAAASE!!!

Yelp
We have a visitor tomorrow and my mom asked me to buy the food. We will have dinner and she will be the one who prepares and cooks. She's so good at cooking. She gave me the list in some paper. It has a lot of lists. So I came here this morning. I grabbed one cart and started to buy. I bought dairy products including milk, condensed, cheese and many more. After that I bought wine and drinks. I also purchased a box of beer. Then I went to the meat and seafood section. I purchased shrimp, crab, fish and chicken. Then I went to the fruit section and bought lemon, grapes, apple and banana. After 2 hours I bought everything I needed. I went to the counter and paid for it. I highly recommend this grocery store.

Yelp
I had a hassle experience in this grocery store. They have huge parking lots but they are not vacant since there are a lot of cars in the parking lot. So I waited for almost 20 minutes before parking my car. When I enter I can see the different selections they have. Some of their inventory was full and some were already empty. The staff are busy arranging and filling the inventory while other staff are busy helping and assisting the customer. Since the staff are busy, no one assists me when I need help. So I spent half an hour only buying some cookies and drinks. Then I wait at the counter since there is a long line. Thanks G that's it's my turn and paid what I bought.

Yelp
5 stars for the pharmacy and Starbucks. The store itself is fine most of the time. Going at peak times can be pretty annoying. They tend to run out of a lot of produce and it's packed. But the middle of the day is usually a good experience.

Yelp
The staff are generally annoyed and seem to not want to be there save a few that keep up a good attitude. I've been sick from the salad bar before and completely stay away from the hot and salad bars because of this. Otherwise, as far as your standard grocery store goes, it serves it's purpose. I'm in almost daily and it provides what's needed. I find the bar inside to be a hilarious addition as well.

Yelp
My first time at Mariano during happy hour. There is live music. I'm having such a great time this afternoon. I can't wait to come back for another performance.

Yelp
I am writing about the pharmacy mostly. I have been going to this pharmacy for at least 4 years. Sometimes they're nice but usually pretty rude. One of the pharmacist's (blonde woman) barely even makes eye contact And was extremely rude to my husband and to me today. Went in asking for Sudafed, the kind you get from behind the counter. She was so rude and just kept saying "no". He could literally see boxes of Sudafed on a shelf behind her. Did she think my husband was some weird drug seeker? I don't get it. CVS is way closer and I am switching all of my prescriptions to there. It's not worth getting frustrated every single time I pick up a prescription, or need some thing from behind the counter.

Yelp
I hate to say this but this is by far the worst Mariano's I've ever been to. The selections of foods suck and there are so few options of anything and the options they do have they are probably sold out of. I think this was a former Jewel or Dominick's-- nothing is really updated or has the upscale Mariano's flare. It literally just looks like a Jewel with a new Mariano's sign. Do yourself a favor and go to a cleaner, better stocked location.

Yelp
I'm craving for some small potato marble after I watch Korean Drama. I searched first for the ingredients on YouTube. I'm surprised since it only needs small potatoes, sugar, soy sauce , oil and sesame seeds. I have oil, sugar and soy sauce in my house so I don't need to buy it in the grocery store. I grabbed my keys and went to this place. I park my car easily since they are vacant. I grab a basket to put my small potatoes and sesame on there. After that I went to the selection of produce. I bought a pack of small potatoes. After that I bought a sesame seed. Aside from that I also bought soft drinks. I paid my purchase easily at the counter since there were no lines at the counter. I'm glad that I bought everything I need.

Yelp
I went here to buy our groceries. When I enter there are a lot of customers inside. I grab a lush cart and start purchasing what I need. It's a hassle when I go to every selection because sometimes there are some customers' carts or some people blocking my way since they are also in that way. Some of the inventory was already empty. When I look in other selections some are not organized well. I spent 2 hours here. Some of the products I need are already sold out and some are not available in this grocery store. When I was done shopping I went to the counter to pay for my purchase but there was a long line there. So I wait a few minutes before it's my turn.

Yelp
We come here early so we will have an easy and not tiring time shopping for our groceries. We know this grocery store so we are familiar with every selection. They have a lot of choices. Some of them are organized, some are empty, and some are not organized. We went last to the selection of seafood and meat to buy a kilo of shrimp and chicken. We will grill it tomorrow. After we bought everything we needed, we went to the counter. We expect that there are no long lines since it's early but when we see the counter there are long lines. So we are 5th in line at the counter. It's so boring to wait. After 20 minutes of waiting, we were glad that it's our turn. The staff are quick in doing their job although she looks tired. I only gave 4 stars to this grocery store.

Yelp
The cashiers and the deli girls are unprofessional. Gossiping while customers are around and looking like they're tired and reek of cannib. Retrain the staff if and when a customer approaches. A greeting Hi, how can I help you might be a start to assist the customer with their shopping experience. For poor first impressions you get one star on Yelp!
