FTC Wants to Block the $24.6 Billion Deal Which Would Combine Jewel and Mariano’s | Eater Chicago

"Launched in 2010 and operating about 44 stores in Illinois, this newer, higher-end regional grocery brand is frequently cited as the likely model for store appearance and assortment if parent companies pursue a unified retail identity after a merger, though officials have not confirmed whether the brand would be preserved." - Ashok Selvam

The prices are off the charts here. I thought I would stop in. I only needed about ten things before I stopped at Costco. I thought it works make it very convenient as this store was on my way home. I could not believe the prices. I do almost all of the shopping for our house every week. Most of the items were almost double what I normally pay and 2 of the items were just shy of three times the amount. I can see why some of these sites closed. For the people that normally shop here, you could save so much money if you went to a different store. Not Jewel, they are up there in prices as well. Woodmans and Walmart are a lot less expensive.

I've always had a great shopping experience at the store, which was made better during a recent visit. Recently I went shopping and for some strange reason left items in the cart and did not load them in my car. I had other shopping rounds to do and didn't discover to nearly two hours later that I was missing several items. I went back to the store and discovered that they were retrieved by an employee and logged in as left behind. Zack at the customer service window was the ultimate professional in helping me get these items back which not only were expensive but a necessity for us. I fully expected these items to be lost and that I would have to repurchase them however I was very grateful to discover that everything was returned honestly. This store has been at the top of its game since it opened, and especially on this particular day I am very grateful that Mariano's is in our community.

Google
This is a grocery store. They sell groceries. I was after an obscure product, a craft root beer in the low-cal version. Most stores don't carry it. The parking lot has a vast number of handicapped spaces. There is self checkout. I made a pretty quick trip to gat the root beer.

Google
Absolutely terrible. Terrible food bar - smelled of something burned just walking by. Terrible prices and selection of groceries compared to other stores. Forget about seafood dept - asked if fish was fresh and got a positive answer - brought home and it smelled spoiled. Brought back and they were unapologetic but took back and said it did smell terrible. Ever since Kroger took over - no one in that stores cares and it shows.

Google
I enjoy that you can get so many lunch and dinner foods ready to go. Salads, hot foods, sandwiches and fresh sushi are available along with a bunch of ready to heat items and quick prep meals. The usual bakery, deli counter and fresh meats have many options even offering varieties of jerky. If you are willing to use the app, the discounts can add up. They also have a large curated liquor department and a pharmacy.

Google
Meat department has pub burgers advertised, grill and prepare in store, great! I did this about 4 years ago and they made me a great burger. I asked for one they immeadiatly seemed like i was inconveniencing them. I waited 20mins and they give me a container i thank them, make it back to my car open it up and its just a grilled patty, no burger. I go back thinking there was a misunderstanding just for them to call me a liar and that they've never served food in the last 12yrs. Thanks for wasting my time, money, and patience today.

Brian M.

Google
Did not have chicken dumpling soup my last two visits. Prices are very high compared to other stores. Said they had pizza by the slice and there were 3 pieces left that looked dryed out and zero selection. Not inpressed with this store but people were nice.

Bret S.

Google
In our area we have the choice of Mariano's and another mediocre grocery store. I get the grocery business is rough, but it can't be that bad with prices as high as they are and almost no employees to be found in the store.

Sandy H.

Yelp
The Mariano's staff in the Hot-Foods division was instrumental in helping to supply Thanksgiving dinner to 600+ people on Thanksgiving day this year. I would specifically like to call out Victoria, who worked with us so we could purchase and the team at Marianos could cook and slice 100 lbs of turkey meat for the dinner. Everything was prepared on time and ready to go Thanksgiving morning. Victoria provided excellent customer service and we truly appreciate and want to thank the Hot Foods staff at the Lake Zurich store. You all are awesome!

Yelp
The meat counter should just close. The employees are extremely rude and all have hearing issues. No greeting no thank you. It has been like that for years and same group of people still working there! I don't know what kind of life they are going to through but we customers do not owe them anything. What ashamed! I started going to Whole Foods for a while but will still go to Mariano's for something quick as it's closer. Will not go to the meat counter ever again! Meat quality going downhill anyway. Whole Food employees are on the opposite side. They come up to you and greet with big smile. Cut per order and check with us to make sure things are done right.

David S.

Yelp
On an early Sunday morning their bakery was well stocked and very neatly displayed and clean. The only drawback was the pricing which seemed to be a bit high. Still it was worth a shot.

Gina P.

Yelp
Stopped in to pick up groceries with my child and the cart guy stood there staring at us. Creepy asf. I told him I'd bring it back when I'm done and he stood there staring at my child (9). Called the store and was sent to voicemail. Another customer said to the cart person she said stop staring. He kept staring until he saw a police car pull in. I'm done with this store. In 5 minutes from there and I'll be going to Whole Foods.

Yelp
''Twas ok. I went because the Mariano's near me had a band in store to try to educate people about their fuel points, which I didn't even know I was earning, and I was just a few miles from needing to hitchhike if I didn't stop. I still don't think I used the fuel points right. I got 3¢ off per gallon, but you're supposed to get 10¢ off if you redeem a certain number. However, there didn't seem to be anyone around to ask and the pump itself, while it asked if I was a Rewards member and asked for my alternate ID (phone number), only gave me the three cent discount and didn't ask if I wanted to redeem any points. So idk when points expire, how to use them, or anything else related and the FAQ didn't help. Maybe using them at a BP will be easier. Also, I don't know what's up with the bathrooms but there's isn't a way to lock them from the inside. There is also nothing that indicates whether it's vacant or not. Perhaps there is a key and I didn't notice because the woman coming out held the door for me? I'm not sure that is likely since she arrived at the same time and seemed to go in immediately, but maybe. The alternative is just hoping that no one opens the door at the wrong time, so I hope I did just miss the key bit!

T J.

Yelp
Ever since this store changed over it has gone downhill. Check out is a nightmare and the main reason I won't go back. It seems the business does not have enough employees to handle the weekend crowds. No deals here, certainly not worth shopping at.

Yelp
Visiting Family locally and in a rush for a quick few supplies, stopped in the local Lake Zurich location. Had never heard of Mariano's, but pleasantly surprised. Very organized, clean, and all the employees were super helpful and friendly. Staff helped us find what we needed and we were out of there. Decent prices and sales reasonable. Had to call out special service and attitude of our Checkout Associate Marleni. She offered help to join their club and save a few $, but also focused on speed and being super courteous. Thank you Marleni. Best Wishes.

Mary B.

Yelp
Check out is a nightmare. We went to one of the self checks, waited behind a gentleman only for the worker to tell us she was closing it down. Went over to a regular lane where lines were each 5 people deep only to see the same worker allow another customer to go through self check. When I inquired why we could not go through but the other customer could she said we had too many items for her to wait and keep it open. I've never had any issues with their food and they have good sales but they need to figure out the check out!!

Yelp
I would post the full video to Yelp, but can't. So here is a screenshot of the post from our Nextdoor app. You can clearly see him spray washing a basin right next to meat. Gross. Won't be shopping here anymore. And I really like how I could order online and pick up.

L.K. R.

Yelp
Called to order a cake. They've always said at least 24 hours. I called prior to 24 hours and they said there is no cake decorator. Going to jewel from now on.
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
The store was so understocked at 3pm on Sunday you'd think they may be going out of business if wasn't for the all the cars outside and the long lines at checkout. They lack even the basic items that Jewel, in the area, and the Target have in stock. Maybe it's their lacking of stocking the shelves and it's in the back. The perceived look on being busy but the isles are mostly filled with their online shoppers taking up most of the isle with their insane sized 2 story carts. Remember we vote for who stays in business with our money, and while Woodman's and Target have my business now people continue to put up with it so they will continue to to run a worst grocery store in town. I would suggest trying anywhere else if you are looking for anything. FYI everyone brags about their pub burgers, they are horrible compare the the burgers from Wahl Burger or other sometimes (if stocked) found in there meat isle not frozen.

leilah o.

Yelp
The grocery store is okay overall, but the self checkout lanes SUCK! They always freeze for every other couple of items and every time you take a bag off of the bagging area.

Joan M.

Yelp
See post from 3 years now fast forward on 1/22/23 at 5 pm witnessed and videoed cleaning meat counter with hose and foamy substance with meat in it and being sprayed when a customer said yeah you cant be doing That the worker rolled his eyes and kept going. I swore off the store after this as showing video to manager and leaving messages with no return call from corporate knew things were only worse then 3 years ago. Recently i was sick and someone dropped off food one which was a dip exp 4/18/23. When i opened it was covered in mold . Went to return it thinking maybe was giver Error. Below is pic ALL had mold as temp was not correct opened and showed them to a employee who said well tell the manager . Manager said 2nd day etc etc ALWAYS a excuse went back a d employee has thrown them away and clearly had NO intention of reporting it or removing other items from counter. Health dept needs to take a serious look at this store.. can't imagine what happens we don't see...

Yelp
Loved my sons birthday cake! Called just a couple days before his party that was video game themed and just asked if possible to draw some type of controller on the cake. Was expecting something small and just basic but was so excited when I picked it up and saw this. It was amazing ! Everyone loved it and of course tasted amazing as usual. Highly recommend for their bakery!

Ashley I.

Yelp
Shopping experience was okay but they now have carts that lock up when trying to leave! I had my small child with me and cart full a groceries! As I was heading out the first set of doors, my wheels lock! So not only was I now blocking the exit for others to go through. I was stuck managing my child and trying to move my heavy cart out of the way! By the time someone came and tried to help, I had already grabbed another cart and the cart guy didn't even know how to unlock the wheels so that cart was still sitting in the middle of the exit as I drove away. I don't know who decided to add these devices to the cart but it is one of the dumbest things I've seen.

Meg L.

Yelp
Mariano's is such a horrible place. The checkout takes forever and no one helps if you do the self checkout. I rang up my entire order minus one thing and the machine freezes. The employee is trying his best, the manager just stands there and does nothing. They told me I had to go to another lane and re-ring everything up. I left

Yelp
Just when you thought that Mariano's stores couldn't get any more impressive -- this came along. 18 checkout lines, spacious layout, immaculately clean bathrooms, large eating area with a view to the outside, BBQ and sushi bar, large parking lot (in an L shape so there's more spots close to the front), and a traffic flow that avoids congestion. All this with competitive prices and tons of selection that is somewhere between Jewel and Whole Foods in item selection. Here's some highlights: Beer: Huge selection overall, especially for making your own 6-pack mix (Comparable to the # of choices you'd see in the Binny's area). Wide variety all the way from Lindemans fruit beers to local craft beers (Lakefront Brewery, Goose Island, Sprechers, Two Brothers, etc..). Did not see any rare items though. Wine: Very nice display, even nicer than many local wine shops. You'll find items a step above the normal grocery store like Allegrini Amarone or Hoopla Oakville Cabarnet. Spirits: LIke the wine, good selection with nicer items you might not expect to see like Remy Martin VSOP, 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey, Midleton Very Rare Irish Whiskey, or Pravda Vodka. Cosmetics: Good selection of conventional and natural choices, similar in presentation to what you'd find in a Target Greatland. Vitamins: You'll find all the essentials you need in a nice display like Vitamin Shop. Produce: This is what generally sets Mariano's apart from other grocery stories -- always fresh and tons of selection at a reasonal price. You'll find a good selection of international and organic iems as well. For some items like apples or tomatoes, you'll be delighted to try new varieties you don't typically run accross at most grocey stores. Deli/Meats/Cheeses: Excellent choice of cheeses locally and around the world. Well stocked salad bar. Fresh seafood (24 hours from shore to store). Tons of choices of fresh and frozen meats. In this area, this store has more seafood and meat choices than other local Mariano's which can be grilled or steamed for free. Bakery: Tons of selection of fresh baked goods and cakes. Highly recommended are the cookies and the muffins. They also have a big variety of freshly baked breads. Florist: Tons of flowers, all arranged nicely and with a wide selection of arrangements. Coffee and tea: LED lit aisle with good selection of whole bean coffees from the standard and premium providers (Starbucks, Intelligensia, Lavazza, Gevalia, etc.). KCup selection was not as impressive nor were the choices of instant coffess. The tea selection was good with brands such as Republic of Tea, Numi, Good Earth, etc. but lacked some of the other premium brands such as Mighty Leaf, Tea Forte, and Two Leaves and a Bud. International Aisles: Beautiful presentation with flags, signs showing distance to major cities, and projections on the floor. However, all the food was crammed into a few aisles so choices of each type were limited. However, if you're looking for balsamic vinegar or Spanish / Italian Olive Oils, there is good selection here. Craft sodas: Nice selection with brands such as Sprecher, IBC, WBC, Filberts, Boylan, Sioux City -- but nothing particularly rare. Ice cream and gelato - Tons of selection of premium ice cream such as Dadu, Magnum, and Talenti -- but even more impressive is their choice of local ice cream such as Oberweis, Three Twins, Graeters, Ruth & Phils, Purple Door and harder to find brands such as McConnells and Teariffic. Yogurt: Dominated by the usual brands such as Dannon, Yoplait, Chobani, and Fage. Overall this stands out as an upscale Marianos with more selection than other local stores, excellent signage, and great customer experience. If each subsequent store keeps getting better, I'm excited to see what new ideas they come up with next!

Yelp
Mariano's USED to be a great place to shop for grocery's, now.......... Fuhgettaboutitttt. Since Kroger bought this chain, its been all downhill. Self check outs, what's next ? Come in at four a.m. and unload the trucks ? Half the time they don't work properly, now wait for someone to assist. Never enough competent help either. Lousy produce, way overpriced deli, salad bar tastes like everything came in a plastic bag, ecchhh ! Decent specialty cheese dept and great customer service girls, that's about it. Safeway ruined Dominick's & Kroger has ruined Mariano's.

Yelp
The decline continues. This time, the worker who helped me at the meat counter was sorely in need of training. I asked for three of a certain kind of burger. After he packaged them I asked for two of a different kind. He panicked and said "Oh no! I gave you three instead of two!" referring to the first order. It took a while to calm him down and make him realize he hadn't made a mistake. Then I asked for two of a third kind of burger. I watched him package these. When I got home, I realized they were the wrong item because they were labeled wrong in the meat case. This poor guy had difficulties as it was, and had to fight uphill against incorrectly labeled product. The issue of stocking carts blocking aisles remains. A cart full of new product blocking an aisle and no one there to empty it. Woodman's recently opened a few miles north. That's my new destination. The management of Mariano's has lost its' vision of where they should be.
google avatar

Natalie P.

Yelp
Popped in to grab a few things for the weekend and to pick up some smoked chicken for hubby. This location is always so busy. But surprisingly this evening wasn't I didn't have to wait at the meat market or at checkout in and out 15 minutes.
google avatar

DB A.

Yelp
When Mariano's opened, some years back, it was a step or two above the Jewels and the Dominick's in the area. Never as good as Sunset or Heinen's or even Whole Paycheck, never as interesting as Trader Joe, but certainly above average. Now they have settled into mediocrity, and with persistent stocking problems, they have become the most frustrating supermarket I know. Too bad they're so close to me; their proximital convenience is outweighed by the frequent frustration of fineeded items being out of stock. Added later (5/11/19): Pay attention to freshness dates. They frequently have past-code merchandise on shelves, sometimes apparently discounted for age. Today I found a package of nuts on the shelf that was 15 months past its sell-by date.

Johnny D.

Yelp
This Mariano's location is very nice. Vegetable department is very organized and looks fresh. The bakery is also amazing. It has lots of nice pastries which I bought. They also have a free cookie station which can be good for the kids. The doughnuts looked fresh. I got some croissants which looked beautiful. I got some meat at the deli and oh my goodness they work so well and fast at the same time. Other stores take triple the time then the workers at this store. I think this doesn't deserve five stars because there are something's I would enjoy which are small details like allowing to individually pick croissant's or muffins. I personally think this place was one of the best Mariano's I have went to in a while.
google avatar

Alicia C.

Yelp
Always very clean and the staff are always very friendly. Has a large selection and is always stocked!
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
This place has seriously gone downhill in the last two years. Food Quality- On two separate occasions I have purchased seafood that was literally rotten. One was king crab legs and the other a lobster tail. The lobster tail was so bad that our entire house smelled like ammonia! Both items were previously frozen so the only way they could have become rotten is by keeping them far beyond the point they should have been sold. Service- Buying deli meat? Expect to wait in line for 25 minutes. Checking out? There will be a minimum of 4 carts in front of you. Bottom line: We don't shop here anymore. Service is one thing but food safety issues will keep me from coming back again.

J B.

Yelp
This mariano's is the worst when it comes time to check out. They need at least two more self checkout stations. 6 total instead of the 4 they have. They rarely have more than 2 non self checkout stations open.
google avatar

Uyanga B.

Yelp
I was recently at this Marianos location, most of the staff are outright rude and have no knowledge of the location of items. The deli section took very long, i was waiting for 30 minutes, and there was only 1 person working there for the first 20 and they were also in a terrible mood and talked down at me because they had to open a new package of the deli meat i wanted.

Kim M.

Yelp
I went to customer service at the Mariano's in Lake Zurich with a problem and the women at the counter was very rude to me! I had left my cell phone in the cart and she basically told me it was not her problem..... I continued to say no it's not your problem I just wanted help finding the cart employee that was on break. I drove all the way home to use my computer to " find location of my phone" to see it was at the store. Drove back and the very nice cart employee said he turned in my phone and the other wonderful employee, Zach also was great! Thanks to them I have my phone! A little concern and niceness goes along way!

Yelp
This is a grocery store that offers a variety of services. Mariano's has regular grocery isles with frozen and refrigerator items and regular goods. They have a small fresh cut flower section and both organic and regular produce. My favorite part of Mariano's is the 'whole foods' side. They offer made to order sushi, made to order brick oven pizza, 10 hot soups, an extensive salad and olive bar. They meat counter has a vast selection of cuts and they will even cook your steaks to order for you while you shop. They also offer a deli bar with a an entree and two sides for $7 or $10. Just pick out what you want take it home a heat it up in the oven. The bakery is excellent. Best prices on custom cakes. Only place I will order my daughters birthday cakes from. You will not be disappointed with this grocery store.

pete n.

Yelp
Distinct lack of help at checkout. Seemed like a nice store organized a little differently But when checking out asking for cash back they charge you! $.50 for the $20 I received). Not a lot of money but lost me as a customer!!!
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
This is not a well run Mariano's. I work nearby and stop by to pick up lunch about once a week. The self serve registers in the hot foods area are not open, and then they have one or two registers open with 4 self checkouts for the entire store. Even at 11am on a weekday, there are lines down the aisles, and I'm just trying to get a quick lunch. Its ridiculous. And don't say because of the pandemic....I'm sure having a ton of people corral at the 2 open registers is more unsafe than having the registers near the hot food area open.
google avatar

Wayne K.

Yelp
I'm afraid you lost my business tonight boys. There were no carts. Shelves we empty, and don't say it's the pandemic because you guys haven't been stocking you shelf's on normal items. Got my 4 items and guess what? 2 lanes open. There were approximately 9 people in those lanes and 15 in the self checkout. I dropped my items in the frozen section and left. Went to Jewel. They had carts and shelves were stocked which proves it's just you folks. Got in and out in 5 mins. Goodbye Mariano's.......

Ag C.

Yelp
I don't like to frequent the Lake Zurich location, the Vernon Hills Store is larger and is better serviced by staff. At the Lake Zurich sore you will find missing price tags on shelves in all departments. To comparison shop you have no clue how much you are paying. You will find at checkout that prices are more than the produce tags. Produce condition is disappointing for the price. Staff is polite but I never observed associates with direction or attentiveness. Was waiting at the deli and the only staff worker at that station was drinking a coffee at the Starbucks stand. No one to assist self checkout. There was a person at the customer service desk was out of site sitting down. There has been changes in layout and inventory. Most of my go to items have been discontinued.
google avatar

Alexis J.

Yelp
I came into this store on Monday to place n order for a baby shower cake to pick up on that Friday. I have never ordered cakes from Marianos before. When I came in to pick it up, apparently they put the order in the Saturday pick ups. Needless to say, there was no cake made and I was pretty frustrated. They asked if I could wait that they will get it made. The cake was now being rushed and I was not 100% pleased with the results. I appreciate their efforts, but it was sloppy. They only offered $5 off each cake. I ordered a 1/2 sheet and a 1/4 sheet. It is not fair to the customer to have to pay for another employee's error and sloppiness. The frosting was not even and there were cracks and drips from the dye showing on top. I will not be ordering cakes here in the future.

Yelp
Wow!!! This weekend was my first visit and I am impressed. The selection is amazing and I loved walking through each section of the store. They had a delicious assortment of gourmet meats and cheeses. I picked up a freaking awesome mango/ginger cheese and had to refrain from eating it all in one setting. The produce section in this store is next to Heaven for the fruit/veggie lover. I bought every passion fruit they had in stock and will do it again when visiting the Lake Zurich area.

Yelp
After a couple friends bragged about Mariano's, I decided to see what the big deal was. Even though my first Mariano's was in Vernon Hills, I quickly decided to drive further to shop there. So once they opened up the Mariano's in Lake Zurich, I was ecstatic. You are probably asking "why" make a big deal about a grocery store? My response is Mariano's is NOT your typical every-day Grocery store. I call it the "Mariano" experience. Not only do they have a great selection, their prices are comparable or less expensive than other major grocery stores and they also have better quality items. The produce section is extensive & they use local farmers. Great prices & fresher produce. Near the produce section they have some packaged items like their yummy Salsa. They have a section on different types of breads -- your usual Italian bread or artisan bread. They will even slice the bread for you. Their Deli meat is better than Jewel & Dominick's. Better prices, and some are gluten free & minus MSG. My favorite is the Deitz & Watson Turkey with Italian seasoning---OMG. In addition to deli meat, they have side dishes & sandwich dressings that are delicious. Right next to their deli section, they offer $6-10 dollar meal options (e.g. Meat/chicken/salmon with two sides). You take it home & heat it up. A quick healthy meal. Their butcher section is on the pricey side but it's because they have better quality meat. They even offer marinated or seasoned meats. Their marinated skirt steak is to die for. You can take the marinated meats home to grill or cook with, or you can ask them to prepare your selected meats. How cool is that?!? Wait, there's more --- Mariano's has a bakery that competes with any bakery. Yes, I said it. Unfortunately, their bakery is placed right across the deli section. So I'm usually steered away & somehow coerced to buy 1-2 pounds of awesomely delicious Italian cookies. The Lake Zurich store has an aisle dedicated to an assortment of Olive Oils. Of course, they also have a couple of aisles on international food items (with their own ethnic music piped in). Yes they have an extensive Wine & Spirits selection. Great prices too. You can save even more money by purchasing their own brand items - - Roundy's. Attention "Whole Paycheck" shoppers, Mariano's also carries organic items. Just when you think this is good enough, I'm going to top it. They have different food courts- - Rotissiere chicken, meatloaf, Todd's barbecue ribs/brisket, salad bar, soups, sandwich shop, pizza, Gelato, sushi (yes, I said sushi). This is great for those of us that are on-the-go or just want a healthier meal. But my favorite food court section is the Hot Bar. They have a selection of main & side dishes to choose from--pay by weight. My favs are Fried Chicken, chicken tenders, roast beef, spicy wings, Mac & cheese, mashed potatoes & spicy broccoli. Oops, did I just list 90% of their Hot Bar. And......someone plays the piano while you shop. You may be shopping while listening to a great instrumental piece or a piano version of a pop song. I love it!!!!! My only suggestion is they should post the musician's name. I hope the musicians know there are shoppers that appreciate their talent. I'm hooked! I am so glad there is a Mariano's closer to my home so I can stop in & pick up food (on my way home). Thank you Bob Mariano for understanding what shoppers simply want.

Yelp
This Mariano's is about 5-10 minutes from downtown Lake Zurich depending on which way you take to get here. It is one of the newer built Mariano stores. First one thing I noticed right away as soon as I walked into the store is how clean it was. Surprisingly more & more grocery stores are starting to look old & dirty. This place is lit up pretty well & the floors & walls look clean. The staff always looks busy & always have no problem helping you out unlike some other grocery stores. One of the only problems with this store & one of the reasons that I didn't rate it higher is because they didn't have as big of a selection of grass fed meats & organic meats as the Mariano's store in Palatine. One example is I went to the meat counter for grass fed organic burgers &y didn't have any in stock. If you are shopping here the juice bar is definitely worth checking out. The juices are made fresh & on the spot. Overall this location is very clean & convenient. The selection could be a little bit bigger & better but it still is pretty good. This store is definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

Yelp
I dropped by just to get my friend (who I have not seen in ages) flowers. I have heard wonderful things about Mariano's but I never got to step in. 1) If you are EVER in the Lake Zurich area and you need to get flowers- go to the Mariano's off of Route 22 (Half Day Road) and Quentin. 2) Walk to the Floral Dept (it's towards the middle of the store....) 3) Go to Kathy!!! She is a floral connoisseur. She told me she used to work in the medical fields and you can tell bc she is quite attentive. What made her amazing is that I picked out this bouquet full of lavender roses and blue hydrangeas and she made the entire bouquet look like a work of art! She picked out the freshest flowers for me and it totally made my friend's day!!! The employees are Mariano's seem happy and the store was super clean and everyone- even people who stocked groceries were well dressed!! Loves it~ P.S. Kathy told me that Mr. Mariano is very particular about the types of flowers he has in his stores- which is evident by the freshness and vibrancy of all the flowers!

Yelp
No carts. Understaffed with really long lines. Items constantly missing and out of stock. This place was great when it opened, but it has really gone downhill since Mariano's was acquired.

Yelp
Yes, I am most DEFINITELY a fan of Mariano's. It the "new" way to shop. They've got everything. Local and imported. And tons more - a warm meal center, fresh popcorn, gelato, fresh o.j., etc... !! They're amazing. They're a one-stop-shop. Now while I adore Mariano's, I am not super stoked about the layout at this particular location. Everything felt a bit backwards to me and it was just awkward. So, based on that, I really don't care for it. It's just bad feng-shui. BUT - don't let that stop you from shopping here, because it truly is an "experience". I don't think I'll ever shop at a normal grocery store again (Jewel/Dominicks). There's just no comparison. and price wise - they're totally comparable. I'll just stick to my Vernon Hills location. LOL.

Yelp
Love this store! Their unique different types of pub burgers are such a nice treat! From the chicken feta and spinach, to the turkey garden vegetable. In addition, they often carry the same in brats/sausages! The deli staff is always friendly even in the midst of being very busy! I gave it a four instead of a five, because I used their pick up service. Some of the produce I had to throw away immediately. And there were a few items that were not on the "out of stock" report nor were they in my grocery bags. So they were just looked right over. Moral of the story, enjoy a grocery trip into the store, I recommend taking a pass on the pick up option.

Yelp
Mariano's lose more customers than gain because they make the process of shopping more difficult than it should of be. Coupons, store cards, e-coupons... you need to arm yourself with all that junk before you could buy what they have on sale. Hi I have store card, I spend in line 20 min, and because I didn't have ALL of the COUPONS, E-COUPONS, I wasn't be able to have an advertising price. I left without anything from this store. Tell me WHY SHOULD I COME AGAIN TO SHOP IN MARIANO's?

Yelp
Your staff is miserable. Train them! Teach them customer service and work ethic. All the grocery stores carry the same food items, not worth coming here!

Yelp
Extremly under staffed. Always a long wait at checkout. Which is where I'm currently writing this review from as I go on my 7th minute in-line with 5 people still ahead of me. Come on guys get it together.

Yelp
This isn't Mariano's anymore. It is like any Kroger's store I have been to tacky and dirty. The product selection is just ordinary. The products are the same as you can get at any grocery store. The interesting assortment that Mariano's had, the service all long gone. What in the world was Kroger thinking when they bought the chain I guess they weren't.

Yelp
The Mariano's management at the Lake Zurich location (Quentin and 22) needs to ensure that employees wear their masks over their noses. While many employees are wearing masks properly, several employees who were stocking the produce dept, and walking through the produce dept, were wearing their masks under their noses this afternoon. Mariano's needs to take this seriously. For many of us trying to social distance, our biggest exposure comes from the grocery store. People have been complaining about this situation on Nextdoor. Perhaps management has not seen those posts. Perhaps management is okay with employees wearing masks under their noses. If so, we can choose to spend our grocery dollars somewhere else. I know masks are not 100% comfortable. I was sweating in mine by the time we got to checkout. Frankly, I don't care if it's not comfortable. It's much more uncomfortable to get seriously ill, or to lose a family member who is at risk.

Yelp
The store has fallen to new lows. Now I am told by front end manager John that he has instructed to not give "Coin" change on cash purchases ! When checking out cashier says "I don't have change". This happens mulitple times. I now go down the street to Jewel where they have plenty of change.

Yelp
I was in there at 1 P.M. on Sunday and got a salad from the salad bar. There were no cashiers in front of the salad bar nor in the gelato section. I had to go to the regular line or the self-check to pay for the salad. Get your act together.

Yelp
We shop at many Mariano's in Illinois. This one has the rudest and inconsiderate manager. Not going back to this location due to the bad attitude and treatment from the manager this evening.

Yelp
Was strolling through the Lake Zurich area due to business-related activities. During my 30 minute lunch-break, I decided I'd check out the commodities at the local Mariano's. Having heard nothing but positive buzz from my close friends, I thought I'd be in for an affordable, wholesome meal. In attempt to appease my taste buds, I purchased a small pizza. To my dismay, the cheesy paradise I had anticipated turned out to be charred and burnt to a crisp. Never have I been so let down and betrayed by an otherwise yummy dish. You will never see me dwelling the aisles of any store in the Mariano's chain as long as I roam this earth.
