Maria’s Pastry Shop Review - North End - Boston - The Infatuation

"You have a lot of choices for pastries in the North End, including two places where the walls are lined with pictures of celebrities who have stopped in for cannolis and lobster claws. But leave Mike’s and Modern to the tourists and every single politician - Maria’s is better than both. Don’t leave without the rum cake." - Dan Secatore

Nice little cozy place, but not the Maria's bakery we remember growing up with. However, still a nice little shop, lots of new and exciting additions which a makes this Pastry Shop special in its own way. We walked in just before closing and understandably notice some empty spots in the display cases. The server was very friendly and helpful with our selections... The rainbow cookies were stale(it can be scene in the pic how dry) and should not be for sale, the carrot cake pastry too was day old and also shouldn't be sold. Now the crumb cake was sweet fresh, soft and nice. As was the cranberry tart, delish! We didn't try the sandwiches or the empanada since they were out of beef filled. The atmosphere is perfect for sipping a cup of coffee and dipping your favorite pastry! The menu has some nice items too. Oh well next time!

Google
I came in to get a sandwich and was shocked at the price, no prices on the menu or posted anywhere, reading the description of the sandwich I thought house special bread meant like a baguette or long roll, nope. Sandwich is not worth $15 and it was very wet, not really flavorful and no chips, fruit or dessert to warrant the high price. Last time I'm going there. I ordered #5.

Google
Very nice, clean, and spacious pastry shop and cafe. Various options of desserts, pastries, cakes, cookies, etc. Wish they would have alternative milk options for the coffee drinks. Service was good. Metered parking in front of the store, on the streets, and in nearby parking lot.

First time coming here as wifey wanted some sweets. Ordered a bunch of things just to try: walnut brownie, regular brownie, a red velvet cupcake, m&m cookie, chocolate chip cookie, and some arequipe cookie thing. Everything was great except for the cookies. I do wish they were the soft chewy kind but that’s a personal preference and I can’t really knock them for it. Now we know. But my favorite has probably got to be the arequipe cookie. Never had it before but it was tasty. Will definitely be back again.

Google
I had better expectations when getting a bday cake at this cute spot. The staff was nice, but unfortunately I payed full price ($27) for a small cake that tasted stale and was difficult to cut out a slice from. It was so stale that the candles I stuck in, broke halfway out... Wish it could've been a sweeter experience. 🎂😭

Ordered a too good to go order from this bakery. My husband was turned away since I was unable to physically be there to pickup. In future a customer should be treated as a human and businesses should recognize that emergencies do come up and there needs to be some flexibility to rules. It is easy to blame the app but if you believe in not throwing away food and sustainability then you should also care that your customer came to your shop to do business and they shouldn’t have been turned away. We were at the shop, ready to pay for food you would throw away anyway but you preferred to turn us away. I will not be bringing my business back here.

At first glance the place looked very cute and friendly. It was are first time there, we weren’t even greeted when we walked in. The atmosphere was not welcoming as I hoped it would be. I ordered a bagel and the lady attending to my order seemed to not care at all, she kept rolling her eyes as if we were a bother. I’ll never come back here again. How ever the other girl seemed very sweet.

Google
Great tasting breakfast. But it should NOT take 10 minutes to make an egg sandwich in the morning with nobody in here but myself. Service is always slow and keeps getting worse. Also the lady at the cashier is very nice but does not speak any English

Yelp
I picked up about 10-15 pastries at 9am. I got home and wow, I ended up having 4 pastries in one sitting. I am not sure about the names of the pastries but they were croissant-esque. Fresh, flaky, and super flavorful. 100% would come back again on a day off to enjoy pastries early in the morning. The lead baker was such a sweet elderly man who greeted me when I entered the store and opened the door for me as I left the store. The woman who was serving me was helpful and kind. The staff and service alone deserve a 5 star from me. I never had a favorite bakery store, but I think I just found mine.

Yelp
Food is very serious to Italians, and certainly who makes the best cannoli is up for much discussion and argument. I'm not Italian, but when I'm here on Long Island, I ask ONLY Italians... who makes the best. Some argue Maria's. Some argue Capri, and some even say other places. I just tried Maria's, and while I liked, I didn't love it. It was better than Cardinali's, but not as good as Capri Bakery's cannoli. At Maria's, the cream filling was good, but it was a bit too sweet, and it didn't have that hint of orange zest that I love. I wasn't a huge fan of the shell, either, but it was okay.

Yelp
After picking up some takeout for dinner, we see Maria's Pastry Shop across the street and think .... DESSERT!!! Ambience: walking inside, you see a small cozy bakery with a few tables. It is clean and well lit. They have cakes, cupcakes, tarts and cookies in the counters and baked breads on the shelves. Food: we ordered: Strawberry Tart - fresh strawberry with some sugary glaze Mini strawberry Tart - a cute mini version of the strawberry tart. Plain Cheesecake - standard NY style plain cheesecake Butter cookies - everything's better with butter Service - very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Having never been to Maria's I decided to purchase a too good to go bag. This is usually a good way to try a new place and I have found several excellent bakeries and other restaurants. This had to have been the worst pastry I've ever had! First off I couldn't identify what most of it was and it was all so stale it was inedible. In every other too good to go I've bought I've found that the vendors try to put their best foot forward. They want you to enjoy their food and come back to them. That was not the case here. It wasn't even worth the four dollars I paid.

Yelp
I ordered a lemon cake and it was so tasty. Very tasty and the icing was generous. Service depends on how many customers are in front of you or depends on who's working that day. The store has a very cozy-Spanish style cafe vibes. Great place to hangout with your friends or to drink coffee.

Yelp
Sorry, no pictures. Stumbled upon this place while in the area. Inside the shop has a few tables for dining in, selections of different pastries and coffee. I tried a churro and a raspberry pastry. To my surprise the churro had caramel in it. It was a little too sweet for my liking. The raspberry pastry wasn't bad. Perfect for a little snack or to have for breakfast as it was small, about the size of my palm. Both would pair well with some coffee. Service was okay. I would try something else.

Yelp
I love this bakery, especially the Argentinian pastries. Everything is super fresh and delicious. The service is amazing and everybody is very friendly. The entire place is very nice and cozy.

Yelp
I ordered this cake and specified that it should say Happy Birthday in pink letters. I drove 1 hour away to where the party was I open the cake it has nothing on it. I called the store because I personally spoke to the owner when placing the order he did not want to speak to me or give me a discount. I heard him in the background saying "I'm not giving her a refund for some letters"

Yelp
I stopped by this place while I was in the neighborhood and had and empanada and a churro for dessert. I can not believe how delicious they both were. WOW!!! I recommend this cute little pastry shop to everyone.

Yelp
Cute little place. Lots of cookies and pastries to choose from. I had anisette cookies and croissants. Croissants were so yummy. I can't say that about the anisette cookies. They tasted horrible.

Yelp
It is a great place if you love Argentinian bakery. Empanadas, medias lunas y alfajores are amazing here. You can also find great Yerba mate and dulce de leche. You must try the sandwich de miga.

Yelp
Every time I come here I fall more in love! Maria's has been my go to spot since I moved here for desserts. I haven't had anything I didn't like. The strawberry cake I got for Father's Day was a big hit at the family party. Their macaroons and rainbow cookies are my favorite. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Parking can be tricky on Post but there's a lot behind the building.

Joe S.

Yelp
I agree with Nancy B's review of the TooGoodToGo bag. Totally stale items that should have been thrown in the trash. Unfortunately I had to pay them $4 for me to throw them in my trash bin. I guess they don't understand the TooGoodToGo concept.

Yelp
Got a few more cakes from Maria's recently and feel compelled to up their rating. I got a strawberry shortcake about 2 weeks ago for a friend's party and it was pretty amazing. The frosting was very light and fluffy, and the cake itself was moist. It was eaten up to the last crumb, so I guess that's a good sign. I also got their chocolate/vanilla cake with vanilla frosting on the outside. That was pretty crazy as well; cake was very moist and I couldn't stop eating it. The young lady there explained the cakes well when I asked questions and their cakes are all $20 even, which is very reasonable. I haven't tried their other stuff, but hope I continue to have good experiences!

Yelp
They serve a rainbow cookie hot chocolate latte and it tastes exactly like a rainbow cookie. One of my top fav drinks i have ever had! Pair with their delicious cookie rainbow cookies it's perfection. Note that, just like most stores in the beginning of post ave, there is a tall step to access the store, so if you're in a wheelchair or need assistance, maybe best to call ahead for your order.

Yelp
I Finally found a Argentinian bakery in Long Island closer to me! This is in Westbury, Maria's pastry shop! They were clean and so welcoming! And importantly delicious I don't see how people say they were rude or Pastry's were stale. They were so clean and the nicest people with everything delicious!
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
I'm so torn on this place. Staff is so friendly and the place is very clean, warm and inviting. The pastries are delicious but the cakes are not. They seem to be made by two different people. I've ordered a box of assorted pastries and I kid you not, everything was delicious. The cakes however were not, I got a cake there for the second time thinking maybe the first was an off day. The cakes have the texture of a cake that would be good if soaked like a tres leches cake but to stand alone with just whipped cream frosting without being soaked, not a fan. I wish I could give 5 stars for the pastries and staff, then a separate review for the cakes.
google avatar

Erica A.

Yelp
Very warm and clean environment. Friendly staff. Very good cappuccino. Enjoyed the quiet ambiance. Treats look freshly baked. Smells delicious in here!
google avatar

Sophie F.

Yelp
Super friendly service with a great knowledge about the products. Was surprised by their Argentinian pastries! Everything tasted good, just the black sugar bun was a little dry for my liking. Other than that it's insane how how much you get for the low prices!
google avatar

Doreen L.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this bakery after reading all the positive reviews. However, I can say that I was not all that impressed (no offense to Maria). I got a cannoli cake for my sister's birthday since she's a huge cannoli fan and this place was recognized for their cannoli. Honestly, the cake was pretty pricey for what it was, and it didn't knock my socks off. In fact, I felt like the cake was a little dry. My family was not all that impressed either, so since the consensus was meh, I won't return. Perhaps there are better options here, but really can't say it was a wow for me.

Yelp
Wonderful pastry shop! Maria's is fantastic. Their new location (across the street from where they were for decades) is bigger and better - and more convenient to stop in for a treat when you are leaving Alfredo's Pizzeria next door! Their Rum Babas are the absolute best. I had a Rum Baba at a fancy Italian shop in the Village (NYC) that did not compare. Definitely a place to try if you're in the mood for good Italian baked goods!

Sara L.

Yelp
We are trying to support small businesses during this time, so we went here. The woman serving the customer service was extremely rude - rolling her eyes while we ordered and perfunctorily answering "no" when I asked if any pastries contain nuts (I can tell that there were pastries containing nuts). I do NOT recommend this place to people with allergies- the staff seems to lack knowledge or empathy of allergens. Advice to the store: all items containing nuts or other common allergies (gluten, wheat, vegan etc) should be labeled as such on the website and/or in the store. Then maybe you will not lose the business of all of the people with allergies. On a positive note - According to my husband who does not have allergies, the pastries tasted delicious.

Yelp
Warm, inviting atmosphere. Clean. Friendly staff and huge assortment of cakes, pastries and treats. The pastries are fresh and delicious. Whether you have a special occasion or just in need of a sweet treat, definitely check out Maria's.

Kate W.

Yelp
Absolute highway robbery! $30 for a regular sized birthday cake?!? To add insult to injury when I got home I discovered that the all vanilla buttercream cake I asked for and bought is actually artificial whipped cream and pudding-filled. What a waste of $30!! While $30 for a birthday cake is heinously ridiculous (I was desperate), the cake we tried before deciding we didn't like the whipped cream and pudding was fresh and decorated nicely. So at least there's that?

Anisha J.

Yelp
I found this bakery on yelp as it was a hot day and there isn't much to do outside with COVID. I was very happy with my pastries and cookies that I bought. Everything was extremely fresh and super delicious. The girl who helped me was very friendly and my experience was pleasant. I definitely will be returning soon!
google avatar

Lori R.

Yelp
Cute place, good pastry. I had a selection of chocolate mousse mini pastry, shortbreads filled with custard and rolled in nuts and various cream filled 'stuff'. Coffee was good! Very good!! I would go again.

Yelp
Classic small town bakery, great find! The bakery world has gone from all types of pastries with a few specialties to a world of cupcake pushers! Now this is not a knock on the cup cake world, my recent review of Molly's Cupcakes will prove to you that I am all for a great cupcake. But as a kid, a trip to the small town bakery meant, among other things, a box of the assorted cookies! The jelly stuffed, confectioner sugar covered soft pastry cookie, the leaf shape chocolate sandwich cookie, jelly sandwich half dipped in chocolate and sprinkles classic, it is a fat kids dream! But finding these has become more and more rare. Well Maria's does it, and does it well! Take a look at my pics and you will see what I mean! It is a small place with a limited selection, but that tells you they pay attention to detail. They also have a nice selection of cupcakes, such as the giant red velvet in my pics as well... fantastic! Now I am just afraid the fat kid in me will want to come out to play more often!

Yelp
You will feel like you are in a small Brooklyn bakery right here in Westbury. Very authentic Italian bakery. Limited number of items.. so delicious are the Italian pasteries. They make their own pastry filling.. (not tubs of weird bavarian creme like some places do)... Really light, and delicious here.. They are authentic!! Napolians, and anything in the pastry case that looks good should be tried. Italian cheesecake etc. The Italian biscuit cooks, even plain coffee here is good.

Linda C.

Yelp
got a half pound of their assorted cookies. good cookies. fresh.

Lisa M.

Yelp
I'm glad I decided to try this place despite some of the bad reviews I read. The service was great, fast and very friendly. I ordered a bit of everything, empanadas(6), the Argentinian pastries(14), cookies(6) & sandwiches (de miga) (2). Almost everything was delicious, I probably wouldn't get the empanadas again but everything else definitely was fresh and tasty. I put the amount of what I purchased next to the items, thought I got a ton of food having spent $45. The young lady even offered to help me bring the bags to the car since I had my newborn in a car seat with me (didn't want to hassle bringing the stroller inside) which I thought was very kind.
google avatar

Dawn K.

Yelp
Walked in and I already knew. I've been around a lot of LI bakeries. I knew this would be sub par. I ordered nothing due to the fact that nothing looked fresh, up to par and all were off color. Based on what the 2 others in my party said, I was right. The Italian cookie was slightly better than the chocolate muffin. Staff knowledge needs improvement. She could have sent my very allergic to nuts father to the hospital because she didn't know almond paste was made from almonds. She wasn't a child either.

Marie M.

Yelp
I have been to this bakery many times. It is lovely. The pastries are delicious. The staff is pleasant and informative. The rainbow cookies are delicious. It is a well lit and welcoming atmosphere. They are a credit to the neighborhood. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
The only thing I've tried from this place is their carrot cupcake and it was gross! Vomit worthy gross! I wish we'd stayed away after I saw they had an overall low rating, but I was craving carrot cake, and they're right next to Alfredo's Pizzeria. The cream cheese frosting was seriously disgusting. I can't even describe the horrible taste. I wanted to brush my teeth and rinse my mouth out with listerine as soon as I took a bite! How long had this been sitting on the shelf!? It must have spoiled because I can't figure out why else this would have tasted as bad as it did. Ugh. Just GROSS!
google avatar

Ramona Z.

Yelp
Everything at this shop its so fresh, I like to go there really early in the morning, because you know that everything is made fresh daily every morning because the entire neighborhood is filled with the smell of fresh bake bread, pastries....just delicious and habit forming pastries....Thank you for your great service.

Aidan S.

Yelp
I was a bit skeptical upon walking in. I pass this place every day on my way to and from work. Finally decided to stop in because I was in desperate need of caffeine. There was only one coffee pot on and the only other person in there with me was taking most of what was left. Reluctantly I took the bottom of the pot of the drip coffee and then decided to at least try a pastry because I expected the coffee to taste like the dredges. I believe I audibly said "woah" after I bit into what is probably the best almond horn I've ever had in my life. $7 for the medium coffee and the pastry and that coffee? Tasted like it could have been the first sip of the pot not the last. Really a delightful turn of events and will definitely be back for more tasty treats in the future. If you're a local, you've got to check them out!
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
Not impressed. My office gets cakes here for employees birthdays. The last few times the cake has been WET. Not moist. Wet. When we opened the box the cake was literally leaking. There was a puddle. I have no idea how this can even happen but I do know it's not supposed to. After several chances we're finding a new cake place. Pretty disappointing
google avatar

Lelette F.

Yelp
I came here initially to buy a birthday cake . The staff was so attentive in answering my questions as to which cakes they have available and what exactly is in the cake I ended up getting a chocolate fudge cake ( that is extremely delicious and fresh ) and the texture and design for the external looked clean and not messy and mini cannolis as well Aaaahhhhh these cannoli are amazing if you're in town please try one. The setting is so cute and clean, back to the chocolate fudge cake it only cost me 20 I believe that is starting which Is fine reasonable for a cake as good as this it was delicious and moist and fresh and the fudge was so rich . ughhh damn that was some good cake. This was my first time coming here and won't be my last to see what other cakes they have in store

Yelp
Friendly service! We got the red velvet cupcake. It was just decent. A bit dry... but overall it wasn't bad. The place looks clean with few tables & easy to find on Post ave.

Barbara A.

Yelp
I just came home from Maria's Bake Shop with 1 French Bread, several pastries. and 5 rolls. The bread and pastries seemed fine, but the rolls were so hard that I was afraid to eat one for fear of breaking a tooth, so in the garbage they went. Since it was later in the day I made a point of asking the girl if they were soft and she said yes. I understand bread made early in the day would get slightly stale, but this stuff was dangerous. They really shouldn't sell this especially to someone fussy enough to ask if was fresh. I'm very disappointed. Been living and trying to shop local for 40 years.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
My husband and I was really in the mood for Italian Lemon Ice. When my husband went in, he ordered 2 small. He was told they had no more lemon, but he could purchase a quart of lemon and scoop it out himself. No, that's not what we wanted. Still can't figure out why they couldn't do it. So instead, we ordered 2 small chocolate italian ices. Of course, he was handed medium. The chocolate was good, but it just wasn't lemon ice.......

Ken And Laura R.

Yelp
The shop is very clean and the people are really very nice. My problem is they are overpriced. Bought pignoli cookies - which were delicious- but was charged $42 per pound. Found out after the fact that other bakeries charge about $20 per pound. I know pignoli cookies are usually more expensive than other cookies but double is a bit hard to swallow. I'd like to support a local business but not at that rate.
google avatar

Danielle K.

Yelp
A little bit pricey but really high quality selection. For a box of 10 pastries, ended up being ~$15. My favorites were the Napoleon, rum cake and cannoli cream cup (with blueberries on top!). The bread and cookies are always fresh (love the biscotti). Nice place to pick something up for a special occasion and also have later/better hours than other bakeries in the area.

Nikki R.

Yelp
A bit pricey but always a family go to from a special occasion to a cup of coffee. Shocked to find this holiday the pastries were over cooked and lacking the usual amazing flavor I expect from Maria's. Understanding this year has been trying for all, I will not give up and come back in hopes they will return back to the Maria's I have grown up to know.
google avatar

Edward N.

Yelp
Italian ice with an cold brew coffee (freshly grounded coffee beans) great pastries and immaculate pastries and cannolis. The place is always clean and welcoming. I love coming here and relaxing and enjoying the enviorment.
google avatar

Nashrah A.

Yelp
Went in for cupcakes, but selection was very poor. The choices I had were vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet. I ended up getting two slices of their strawberry cheesecake (the slices were pretty small, must I add), and it tasted below average. The girl who helped me was also pretty unfriendly and rude and I was only there for max 4 minutes. I won't be coming back

Daniel M.

Yelp
I went in this morning to get some empanadas and a few other things. I was pleased with everything. I haven't had empanadas baked this style in many years. I ordered 4 ,one of each that they had. All I can say is one was better than the next. I ordered 2 medialunas they were hot right out of the oven. Two little cannolis were great. Two pignoli cookies great. Everything was outstanding....The girl that waited on me was amazing.... Bravo !! I will return asap
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
I literally would die for their canoli's and almond crawlers. When you first walk in the door, you are hit in the face with a smell that is so sweet and inviting that you could just die and go to heaven right then and there. They make each canoli fresh, and their selection of cookies is amazing. The best part about Maria's is that they are family owned, and the owners live right down the street. This truly is a bakery that cares about its community, and is so delicious that it will keep you coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
Damnit. Why can't we have bakeries like this where I live. I feel like this is such an East Coast thing. If there is a bakery on the West Coast, it has to be hip and cool and serve $20 cupcakes or something. Where are all the good, family-owned, been-there-forever, old school bakeries!? My fiance and I were in Westbury, NY to catch the Long Island Rail Road into NYC for the day and we arrived at the station early so took a walk (in the rain) and happened upon Maria's -- just in time for breakfast! It was fabulous. The smell that wafted up my nose when we opened the door -- Heaven. The woman behind the counter with the Long Island accent, willing to answer our questions about what pastry was what. It was both eye candy and mouth candy looking at the gleaming glass cases filled with pastries and desserts. I got one with ricotta cheese, and we got a couple others to share (can't recall). And the price was totally reasonable too. Love it. Please open up a branch in Livermore, CA.
