Boston’s Best Burritos | Eater Boston

"Boston Magazine once called Maria’s the best burrito in the city. That distinction was no accident. This Tremont Street taqueria has been serving some of the best Mexican food in the city for the better part of the past decade. Go for the shrimp burrito." - Terrence Doyle

The shrimp tacos and guacamole were amazing!!! The corn tortillas taste really good and don’t get soggy like other places usually do. My friend is gluten free so they try a lot of corn tortillas and they said these are the best!

Google
It's mostly a takeaway joint on the Tremont Street across the Emerson college. You need to look for it, or else you may really miss the place. They have a large menu at a reasonable pricebthat invludes burritos, sandwiches, pizza, drinks, bowls. I was fasting and hence needed a vegetarian option, which was on their offering. They do have a small seating area( around 20 odd people). However, it's convenient to take away. We ordered the bean bowl and the shrimp bowl. The quantity was filling, the shrimps were large in size, and the taste was edible. If you want a little more spice, then you can ask them for the spicy sauce ..its yum !! It's well priced for the quantity and quality of food.

This place is worth it weight in gold. I had chipotle chicken tacos. The chicken was flavoursome and was balanced with the sour cream and the freshness of freshly cut tomatoes. I can't wait to return to Boston and have these tacos again.

Hidden Gem Across Emerson College This no-frills taqueria might be easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but it’s well worth seeking out. Primarily a takeaway spot just across from Emerson College, it caters perfectly to students and locals alike. Despite the compact space, the menu is surprisingly extensive and budget-friendly, clearly designed with college students in mind. There are a handful of tables inside (seating about 15 to 20 people), but they are almost always full. Honestly, the best move is to grab your food and enjoy it wherever you’re most comfortable. We ordered burritos, tortas, beans, and drinks. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. I've now been back three times, and each visit has impressed me even more. Highly recommended!

Google
Hole-in-the-wall taqueria with solid burritos and birria tacos. There’s not much to add about this place. Solid Mexican food at reasonable prices. With El Jefe just around the corner, I don’t find myself going to Maria’s as often as I did two years ago. Still, it’s a great spot for a quick birria fix. I usually go for the birria burrito or tacos, and both have been consistently good.

Google
NEVER GOING HERE! The smell of the place is basement and moldy and sweaty. Walked in there is no music, and the tables and sticky. The floors are also not clean. Orders the taco plate. The rice is Ben rice bags - which is not authentic at all. The beans are from a can. They did not give us the sauce to pour ourselves which is not okay. (I know this because I’m Mexican) The cilantro was under the stove storage and the cook used their hands with gloves to open the dirty stove drawer (looked sticky). THE cook didn’t speak to us in Spanish, although once we walked away he started speaking fluent Spanish to their other cook. In our culture that’s ruin.(I’m fluent in Spanish) We sat and ate and people would walk in and walk out because of the smell ONLY GOOD THING HERE soda in a can.

Google
Hole In The Wall and Best Of Boston... you won't go wrong! Authentic food, plentiful servings. If I didn't know better I'd think Abuelita was in the back with a kitchen towel over her shoulder. High Recommendation..

Google
I thank God that I found this place. I’ve been searching for a restaurant up here that reminds me of my home food back in the borderland, and this is it. This is the last Mexican restaurant I will ever need to try in Boston. Thank you for the delicious, authentic food, for the immaculate hole-in-the-wall vibes, for my full belly and the smile on my face!! 😁👌 try the Birria tacos and horchata, I highly recommend!

Yelp
I did not eat here but yelp is suggesting to write a review so I did. God BlessMaria, her family, her Taqueria and America.

Yelp
Not much to say other than this was my first time having dry birria tacos ($16.05). The staff there were very friendly however the food was mediocre.
google avatar

Valerie W.

Yelp
Overall average. Not sure what I was expecting out of a fajita dinner plate but it more closely resembled a rice bowl with the lettuce and pico on the side. Also doesn't come with tortilla which I found a bit odd. Flavor lacked a little bit but it wasn't bad. Overall prices were fair. Staff was nice enough and quick to prepare food. Definitely a hole in the wall joint but nice for a quick meal I suppose.

Yelp
Easily one of the best meals i've had in my life. I got the chipotle chicken quesadilla and my friend got a steak taco and chicken taco. When I tell you that my mouth ascended to heaven, i'm not exaggerating. It's as authentic and fresh as it gets. I would give up my first born child to experience eating that for the first time again. Hell, I downloaded Yelp just to give this review. If you're gonna go anywhere for DELICIOUS Mexican, it should be here or you're doing it wrong. On top of the delectable taste, the employees were friendly and the space is really cute. People definitely lean towards takeout but i recommend eating it right inside while it's hot at the few tables they have.

Yelp
Amazing food here. I would come back any day, and loved it. Great vibes and atmosphere all around! Service was great and quick. Authentic!

Yelp
I wish we had taken pictures of our food but since we were in a bit of a rush forgot. My Hubby had the carne asada super burrito and I had the adobada. Both were flavorful and didn't go skimpy on the meat with the asada. With the adobada I'd say it was just right not overloaded but not skimmed either. Service was very quick it didn't take long to receive our order. Complimentary chips were fresh. Next time I'm in town I'll definitely go back this delicious taqueria. Highly recommend. Muchas gracias!!

Kyra S.

Yelp
Customer service is horrible. I placed an order through yelp. I thought I wrote all toppings on the side for both orders just made. I realized I didn't. After calling yelp(Grubhub), they tried calling the restaurant and told me they aren't accepting calls. I tried calling 9 times and got nothing. The 10th time someone answered, I explained that I made a mistake and needed all the toppings on the side for the last quesadilla. The guy on the phone told me to reorder it, he wouldn't remake it, call Grubhub and put in another order. I then asked if I should cancel the order to put in another one and he said no. Just add another order. Then proceeded to tell me not to be rude because I didn't want to place another order without the first one being cancelled. Incredibly rude to a paying customer. I'll never come here again. If I could rate 0 stars, I would.

Yelp
Maria's Taqueria is an absolute gem, and their steak burrito is a mouthwatering delight that you won't want to miss. Now, let's talk about the star of the show--the steak burrito. It's a true masterpiece! The burrito was generously filled with tender, perfectly grilled steak, nestled in a soft and warm tortilla. The combination of flavors and textures was simply divine. The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and packed with flavor. Each bite was a heavenly blend of savory meat, accompanied by fresh and vibrant toppings. The salsa added a delightful kick, and the guacamole was so creamy and flavorful, enhancing every mouthful. What sets Maria's Taqueria apart is their attention to detail. They use only the freshest ingredients, and it shows in every bite. The burrito was so well-balanced, with just the right amount of rice, beans, and cheese, complementing the star ingredient--the steak. The size of the burrito was substantial, providing a satisfying and filling meal. It's perfect for those craving a hearty and delicious lunch or dinner option. Beyond the steak burrito, Maria's Taqueria offers a wide selection of authentic Mexican dishes that will please any palate. The menu features an array of options, from flavorful tacos to zesty quesadillas, all made with the same care and dedication. To top it all off, the prices are incredibly reasonable, considering the quality and portion sizes. It's an excellent value for such delicious and satisfying food. Overall, Maria's Taqueria, is a must-visit for anyone in search of an exceptional steak burrito and a genuine Mexican culinary experience. The combination of welcoming ambiance, friendly service, and delectable food makes it a top-notch dining destination. Don't miss the chance to indulge in their mouthwatering steak burrito--you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
I typically do not leave reviews on Yelp, but since my experience was exceptionally bad, here goes: I have never had a more severe case of food poisoning in my life than I have from this restaurant. My friend and I were enthusiastic about grabbing dinner from this place, given the positive reviews and reasonable prices--especially in a city with little to no (good) options for Mexican food. So, we place our order for a chipotle chicken bowl and a couple steak tacos, and the service/ambiance was fine! Our food was prepared quickly, and the employees were pleasant, but there were a few things that were red flags. First, they gave us plastic straws without any paper covering or gloves... which is fine, I guess. And then they give us plastic silverware, again uncovered, with the mouth-end of the forks touching the open countertop.... odd. To be fair, our meals tasted good, and I think most everyone else in this thread would agree--that their meals tasted good!--however, the morning after was awful. I am not sure what caused our food borne illness, whether it was the chicken or veggies or something else, but seeing that this was the only thing my friend and I had to drink/eat the night before, there is no doubt that it was THIS meal that caused us to get sick. Think: severe stomach pain, nausea (to the point of a fever), and complete loss of appetite. Again, I typically do not leave reviews on Yelp, especially critical ones like this, but I felt compelled to share my experience--at least as a warning.

Yelp
My go to place for burritos , fajitas (I like the shrimp fajita wrap), tacos (all kinds) and nachos (one of the best in the city). This place make look like a tiny dive, but the food is excellent, authentic Mexican food with amazing flavor! You can even get hibiscus agua fresca or fresh squeezed lemonade . Try this place. (I secretly like it more than the famous Anna's Taqueria...which is also delicious)!
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
Best tacos I've ever had! We had the chicken, carnitas, and al pastor tacos. They were all delicious! I recommend the chicken--it is exploding with flavor. My partner recommends the carnitas. Seating is very limited (3 tables/10 chairs total), so it is more of a takeout joint. But seriously, the food is worth getting no matter what.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great stop for a quick bite! Good food, price, and service, especially for downtown.

Yelp
Going to the Wang Theatre for a show and I spotted this place and had to try it. Next door down is a bar that you can get a beer while you wait for order. I ordered a carnitas quesadilla with guac, and a chicken quesadilla with guac. Both are $9 each roughly and $1 more for guac. The quesadillas come with pico, and sour cream. Also there was a nice selection of Jarritos sodas. 2 Tamarinds were my choice. Total was $30 even after tax. I split the order 50/50 with a buddy and shared each quesadilla. They were both great and crispy on the outside and gooey and delicious on the inside. The carnitas was superior in every way but both were great. Served with a fork so you know it can be messy haha. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for a quick bite to eat

Yelp
Wow, what a great find. Arrived Boston on an early flight and thought we lucked out when we could get into our hotel across the street early, but we really hit the jackpot busy picking Maria's! Outstanding food from a tiny little place that we might not have poked into if not for the good reviews. We had birria quesadilla, steak, shrimp, and chicken tacos -- all were really fantastic. Even the salsa served with chips was great. Will seek out Maria's next time we make it to Boston!

Julia N.

Yelp
Not much seating, but the Birria is some of the best I've had in the Boston area. Birria quesadilla was so cheesy and delicious.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
This place was across from the hotel I was staying at, so I thought I would try it. The service wasn't the friendliest. Per Yelp photos, the tacos look unappetizing. So I got the Birria tacos, which were solid. It got a nice crunch while the meat was tender and flavorful. A tad oily, though, so it upset my stomach. Also, the place wasn't the cleanest.
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
Delicious! Quick stop in based on great reviews online. I was pleasantly surprised by the vast selection and the freshness of ingredients. Placed my order and less then 5 minutes later my food was ready. Simply fresh and delicious. Did I mention the reasonable the prices? Two chicken taco's in downtown Boston less than $10!! I definitely will be back.

Giselle E.

Yelp
One of the most authentic places in the city. Shrimp taco plate was DELICIOUS. My friend got the birria tacos and loved them as well.

Ronald H.

Yelp
Great food, very nice employee, overall fantastic for the price.I had the birria tacos and they tasted pretty good.
google avatar

Allegra P.

Yelp
Great burrito that won't break the bank. Plenty of flavor and value. I tried the chipotle chicken and it was pleasantly spiced. I will definitely be going back here to hit that burrito craving again! Only $10 and big enough to save some for later
google avatar

Willzyx Z.

Yelp
Great food, but their work hours are completely random. Website says till 1am, yelp says till 11pm. I come at 8pm and it's closed. Come next day at 10, they are open. Come in 3rd day at 7pm, looks like they never even opened that day. Completely random.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
Serving food late and quickly. I ordered a shrimp taco and carnitas taco; they were delicious! The tortillas they used were so yummy!! Def coming back.
google avatar

Nicholas R.

Yelp
These were some of the best burritos I've had - they were tremendous and didn't even break the bank! While in the area, I tried the steak and the chicken burritos- they were super filling, and I actually even managed to have leftovers both times! The chips and salsa were pretty great as well, especially the salsa!! HIGHLY recommend!
google avatar

Kim W.

Yelp
Best tacos ever! Little hole in the wall but those are usually the best places! Definitely recommend and staff was super friendly too!
google avatar

Anna-Sheree V.

Yelp
Amazing spot right near my hotel! The owner was kind enough to open a bottle of Jarritos for me because I didn't have a bottle opener. The food hit the spot for me! Very authentic!
google avatar

Jordana M.

Yelp
The birria tacos are the best thing I've ever had. The other food isn't great there but five stars for the birria.

Keeley F.

Yelp
Got the Birria tacos and they were amazing. You get 3 tacos for $15 dollars and included onions and limes. Really great lunch spot and quick service.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Everything you order is great the service is top notch food is fresh and can't be beat
google avatar

Demetrius S.

Yelp
Best Birria taco I have had a tasted since I was in Texas. Definitely will be visiting again very soon.

Natalie S.

Yelp
This place is the best! I had the birria tacos and they were sooo goood. I definitely recommend! The service was friendly but it was a bit slow considering we were the only people in there. It was also a bit expensive, $15 for 3 tacos. I would say they were worth a bit less but it's okay! Definitely recommend if you're in the area!
google avatar

Omar A.

Yelp
I went for their carne asada taco but saw they sell birra tacos and they have the birra juice to dip your tacos in!! It wasn't the best but it wasn't terrible either. It was good! It needed more salsa with more flavor and it definitely needed more cheese! I was a fan tho. I would for sure order it again. The girl cashier was sweet. Also, bummer they didn't have Mexican coke. Their bathroom is still closed for customers which is another bummer but what can you do. Overall not a bad place to come and eat some Mexican food.
google avatar

Claire M.

Yelp
super fast service and the chicken tacos were so good i would totally visit again! also the girl working at the cash register was so sweet :)
google avatar

Max R.

Yelp
Surprisingly good birria tacos. In Boston of all places. And they're open ridiculously late. Works for me!

BT D.

Yelp
Best fucking barria tacos I've had in a long time! Recommend came here with my girlfriend and we just bodied 9 tacos in 15 min

Jaime W.

Yelp
Do not hesitate going here! Carnita tacos were amazing flavor. Also tried the nachos with adobe chicken and the shredded chicken was so good and not bland.
google avatar

Govi L.

Yelp
Birria tacos are absolutely delicious. My friend doesn't eat beef so he got the chicken in both burrito and taco form. He said both were great with good flavor. Also had the horchata but thought it was pretty average. The Birria tacos make this an easy 5 star.
google avatar

Jake R.

Yelp
Delicious birria tacos, fast and friendly service. Another member of our party got a chicken burrito he like, and we had some tasty chips and guac.
google avatar

Liz D.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious! We flew in late at night, and wanted dinner - we found them on Yelp and what a gem! The food was so good! And the salsa was absolutely incredible!!!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Not much for curb appeal and the inside isn't much better, but I took my salad with steak to go and it was excellent back at my desk. A lot of lettuce but also a lot of steak and beans and pico. I also ordered extra avocado. With the dressing that was included, quite the meal. Flavorful and filling and quite inexpensive.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Came here after a concert at the Royale at about 9:30 at night. I only got a chicken burrito and a strawberry kiwi Snapple. I did get extra chicken with the burrito, so the total came to $14.45. It didn't taste very fresh to be honest but that may because of the time I went at. Not sure. There was also a piece of chicken that was weirdly hard and I actually spat out because it wasn't really chewable. Overall not the worst burrito I ever had but I wouldn't come back.
google avatar

Filipe V.

Yelp
You can look at a dish and generally tell if it's average and this place is. I've had two different dishes here to make sure to give a fair review before casting it on one but for me it's this plain and simple: the food is rather plain and bland. The rice isn't flavorful, nothing strikes me with zest. I want to taste the bite and juiciness of pico de gallo with a zing of chopped onion, jalapenos, and the juiciness of tomato but it's average. The meats are also average. Yes, they are tender but they really don't have much taste. I feel like the burrito was a bit too big in size to enjoy its contents. They are in a busy place so they do need to keep up with the flood of people who stop by but for me, it's nothing special.

Yelp
**08/10/2020** Below is a quick explanation of my rating mechanism: 1star: Absolutely horrible and will not come back under any circumstances 2 stars: Way below my initial expectation with very few highlights. Will only come back to order specific courses if my friend strongly insist. 3 stars: Average with some turn-offs. Might give it a second chance to test more dishes out. 4 stars: Meets expectation with a couple highlights. Will come back. 5 stars: Exceeds my expectation by various aspects. Will come back quite often and also recommend the place to my friends. Was a bit craving burrito this morning so did take-out for a quick workday lunch. The shop is just around the corner of the street and can be a bit easy to miss for first-timers. The restaurant offers delivery and take-out only and supports apply pay as a non-contact payment option. Regular Burrito with Steak with Guacamole ($7+$1): RECOMMEND From the appearance, the burrito doesn't seem to be that large but it's certainly fulfilling for a quick lunch. Overall the taste is slightly better than one I can get from Chipotle. I like the consistency of the taste from your first to last bite. I do recommend add guac to it as it really helps bring everything together. I am also glad I have ordered steak as the protein, the steak has been chopped to tiny pieces so I it's not hard to chew at all (where I almost always avoid steak at Chipotle). Overall it's a nice local alternative to Chipotle and I'll visit again to try out the fajita option. My stomach did feel a bit upset in the afternoon, hope it had nothing to do with the lunch but will update the review next time if the same issue happens.

Yelp
Barria tacos were the freaking BOMB! This place is authentic, and the staff is great! It's vegan friendly and has so many options to choose from no matter what types of food you prefer. The best restaurant I went to my entire trip! Thank you!

Alexis Z.

Yelp
Idk how this place has 4 stars, but this was the worst burrito (even for American standards) I've ever had but I guess beggars can't be choosers when it's late at night If you can, Just go to the Chipotle down the street instead!
google avatar

Cathy Z.

Yelp
I was getting a bit sick of Chinese food after eating out in Chinatown a lot recently. Maria's to the rescue! My gold standard for burritos is Anna's Taqueria, and I would still pick Anna's over Maria's: the rice, beans, and tortilla at Maria's are a little bland. But with the addition of hot sauce, my bean & rice burrito was a pretty satisfying lunch. The nachos are HUGE and would definitely hit the spot on a late night! Guacamole does cost extra (maybe $1?) but they do not hold back with the portion size! Overall, prices are VERY reasonable--I think my burrito was under $6, and even the "grande" burritos are less than $8. The staff are so friendly and helpful. They were blasting mariachi music when we walked in, but they turned it down when they realized we were struggling to have a conversation. The restaurant is very clean, which is worth mentioning in the Theater District. It seemed like most people were carrying out but you could definitely eat in as well. I would recommend Maria's for late-night eats or if you're looking for a little variety in the Theater District!
google avatar

Julianne S.

Yelp
Maria's is the best!! I was a regular here in college as it was close by and affordable. The staff is so friendly and they even memorized my order! The tacos and burritos are great and perfect for a quick, easy bite that won't break the bank. Definitely a hidden gem in the downtown Boston area.
google avatar

Dalton B.

Yelp
Every time I'm in Boston, I stop in for some food from here. The food is delicious and the employees are great. Maria's is family ran, and every time I go there (which is unfortunately not a lot since I live hours away) they treat me like I'm their long lost brother or son. Really enjoy the energy that they bring. You can tell that they love what they do and are passionate about their business. Make sure you give them a shot when you take a trip to Boston!
google avatar

Octavio A.

Yelp
It doesn't look like much when you first walk, ordered a single shrimp and steak taco to see what i was biting into. Both tacos, blew my mind. I had to order more shrimp tacos though. On the high end on price but the flavor was worth it. 10/10 recommend as a Mexican from the south
google avatar

Vivian R.

Yelp
I'm about to apply to work here just so I can know what their secret sauce is!! I had them for the first time last night. I ordered a shrimp taco and a rice and bean taco. The seasoning on everything was unreal and my shrimp was wicked juicy and a little spicy. My niece is a picky eater, she got two steak tacos and she didn't leave a crumb she said it was sooo good. We got chips and guac. The chips needed more salt but the guac was super green and flavorful. Literally soo good and decently priced. I'll def be coming back
google avatar

Tina W.

Yelp
Great fresh food. No pictures but I had nachos and shrimp tacos. The shrimp was clean and huge!!! Definitely going back to visit when In town
