Most Notable LA Restaurant Closures of 2018 | Eater LA

"After 40 years, the Marie Callender’s flagship boutique Callender’s Grill is closing this weekend after a sudden rent hike by the landlord; the restaurant deviated from traditional Marie Callender’s with forward-thinking takes on popular 1990s dishes, a full cocktail menu, an exclusive California wine selection, a slow-roasted tri-tip Philly melt, and abundant displays of pies, but management shuttered immediately when the landlord doubled the rent." - Eater Staff

Hi, I bought a chicken pot pie last night as takeout. Not good. I remember the chicken pot pie with thick crust bowl and thick chicken soup. What I got was a water down soup and a thin crust on top. I also got a slice of pumpkin pie, which was ok. I spent $26.00, so not worth it. I won't be gong back again. Used to be top 5 restaurants i loved going too! After thinking about it, I called and spoke to a manager. She was no help. What they claim is a chicken pot pie is not a chicken pot pie. Their version is a bowl of water down soup and a thin pastry crust on top. Years ago, it was top and bottom flaky pie crust with thick chicken stew inside. Think a pie with chicken stew filling. Ok, i am done venting. Ps, apparently Sams Club sells this, so thats where I am going to buy it.

Honestly, what's not to love about Marie Calendar's? Good food, nothing crazy fancy, but good, classic, American food. The salad bar is still a great option too. The service has been great every time I've been here over the years. The pies to go are always a go-to for holidays and very easy online or in-person ordering and pickup.

Stopped in to pick up a pie. Haven't been to a Marie Callender's in years; wow their pie prices sure went up. Took home a lemon meringue pie. Never liked their crust; pie wasn't as good as I remember. There was very little lemon filling in it.

Absolutely terrible experience. No wonder Marie Callender’s locations keep shutting down. Never again. I’d rather go to Coco’s or Hof’s Hut—at least they’re fresh, organized, and actually have their act together. If you’re thinking about getting holiday pies, don’t. The wait is ridiculous, and there’s no reason customers should be standing in line forever just to pick up something that should already be ready and has been paid for. Most restaurants let you walk in, get your food, and go. Not here. Total disappointment. #EpicFail

Google
Terrible Thanksgiving Experience I had one of the worst customer service experiences at Marie Callender’s this Thanksgiving. I placed my order online days in advance, expecting a smooth pickup. Instead, I ended up standing in an extremely long line and STILL had to wait an additional hour after my scheduled pickup time. The staff was disorganized and surprisingly disrespectful given the situation. No communication, no apologies, and no sense of urgency despite the huge crowd. If this is how they handle holiday orders, I won’t be returning. Very disappointing.

First of all I would like to say that their Chili is pretty decent not great but okay and their pot pie that my parents tried they said it was okay but watery. The reason why I think the child is okay is because I felt like there should have been more beans and no tomatoes. The chili could have also used sour cream instead of Pico de gallo because I'm not of fan of Pico de Gallo. I also think they should and more food to their menu especially more pasta dishes and savory breakfast dishes. For the food quality I think this place sort of lack consistency like most restaurants that don't do well in the end . I think they should monitor and make sure the food quality is decent and if not for it to be perfected. Lastly the lady who served us food was nice and very patient. It would be nice if they could provide public wifi for the guests too. Overall the food we got was okay but needs room for improvement as for the the service it was great in my opinion.

Yelp
Yay!!! SOUP & SALAD BAR!! It's back and we couldn't be happier!! We always loved going to Marie Callender's for their salad bar and a piece of freshly baked delicious pie! They FINALLY got to reopen their yummy, fresh salad bar. I went with two of my neighbors for lunch, and we all had the soup & salad bar lunch. We were all so happy and they did not disappoint. It was all fresh, great options and great taste!! They had Potato Cheese, Clam Chowder, and Vegetable Soup. I opted for the vegetable. It was so good, especially with their famous, and still yummy cornbread! We had a great time! Service, food, and ambience, all fabulous! If you haven't been for awhile, and especially if you love salad bars, make sure you come to Marie Callender's in Orange. You'll be so happy you did. Oh, we were so full, but got fresh, yummy pie slices to go!

Yelp
I loved our experience at Marie Calendars. My dad and I went for lunch and loved it. We were a little sad to find out that breakfast is only served on the weekends, but even so, our lunch was still tasty. My dad got the corn chowder soup and turkey sandwich. He said it was so tasty and filling. I got the Shepards pie with ceasar salad and pie. The shepards pie was amazing. I wish I could eat it every day. It was so tasty and had lots of potatoes. The kitchen was even kind enough to not have it include mushrooms. The veggies in the gravy were so good and in tiny dices, which made it so much better to eat. The meat was tender and juicy. My only complaint about the meal was the pie. My meal included a slice of pie. I decided pecan sounded good but it was a $3 additional charge. I got it anyways but it came out as a really small piece and was plain. I was disappointed we were charged additional for it when it was small and bland. In addition to the food, the service was great. Everyone was so kind and helpful. Everything was clean and well organized. I'll definitely be back :)

Yelp
First of all, if it wasn't for the amazing waitress, and even the bus person who came to clean, the table was very polite and respectful I feel like I would've given this this restaurant two or three stars. But like I mentioned the waitress, and even the bus boy very kind filled with hospitality very welcoming and we truly do appreciate that. Was diving into our experience today We walked in, and you would think the hostess or the people who reached you out the door would be a little more nicer. They seem very cold, almost bothered that we had arrived to eat there. I was curious why we were sent to the side of the building when everybody is eating on another side of the building kind of odd. I'm not sure if that's just how they organize the serving map, but to be honest with you it was very awkward. The ambience on the side was pretty much like cold and dark similar to the people who greeted us at the door Then we had to wait to be seated. I'm assuming because they were trying to prepare the other area granted there wasn't many people at the moment. Like I mentioned, we just left. The food was definitely delicious. The waitress was amazing and again even the bus boy was a pleasant interaction with the exception of the people who greeted us at the entrance. Will definitely come back and hopefully it was just a fluke and it doesn't happen like that all the time maybe we just walked in at a bad moment .

Yelp
There aren't many Marie Callender's left so this place is a rare find these days. I'll start with saying that the prime of this chain has definitely passed. Every time I've ever been it's fairly quiet, and while it's clean, much of the restaurant looks like it hasn't been remodeled in years. I assume the majority of people that stop by here, like myself, mostly come because they've been in the past and have a fondness for the brand. Their menu is definitely old fashioned, but if you're in the mood for Chicken Pot Pie, Turkey Dinner, or any other American comfort food then this is still a solid option. The food is definitely pricier than it used to be, but I do think you get a good amount for the price point. They have specials that include an appetizer, entree, and a slice of pie, and with a cornbread starter you definitely will leave full. Their baked potato soup has always been a favorite of mine, and it's still very tasty! The entrees, while nothing special, are all pretty solid too and are perfect when I'm craving something cozy. They also have a salad bar (it was past salad bar hours when we came in) which is a great option, and I probably would have opted for it if I could. To top it off the pies are all good, with many different flavors to choose from. If there's one real standout of this place, it's the service. We were helped by Eileen (I believe we've had her a few times before as well in the past) and she's very good at her job. Even when she's busy helping other tables, she makes time to check in and anticipate anything you might need. There really wasn't ever a time I felt like I had to ask for refills or extra sauces because she would always offer them first. The kind of service she gives you really don't see at a lot of places anymore, which is very refreshing. This probably won't be the first choice for dinner, but if you find yourself coming here enjoy the friendly service and comfort food!

Yelp
Horrible phone etiquette, they put you on hold for 15 minutes, hoping that you'll hang up and not call back. Trying to order pies for the holiday season and they told me to go online to schedule a future date, but you can't, you have to place it for today only, and they don't know how to help you. What happened to people helping people in the service industry.

Yelp
Helpful and organized for Thanksgiving! A huge shout-out to the team at the "old faithful" Marie Callendar's in Orange. I stopped there on Tuesday to get pies for Thursday. It could not have been easier. They had colored flags showing customers where to go for pre-paid orders, full meals, and walk-up orders. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and the young lady at the register made me feel like a valued customer. THANK YOU!!!
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
Rude customer service, my boyfriend went in to see if there were pies available around 7:40 am on Thursday (Thanksgiving Day). There were 3 cashier's in the front, and this older skinny lady in the front was impatient/rude to him. The pie he wanted wasn't available so he called me to see which pie to decide on, not even a second and she quickly went on to the next person not having the courtesy to ask him if he needed a minute or if he wanted another pie. There was only 2 people behind him and I understood having consideration for others but that was disrespectful, someone like that shouldn't be working a job dealing with customers if they are miserable doing it or can't be polite. Because of this encounter we decided not to buy a pie, especially that she skipped to the next person, we took our support to another business with a friendly environment.

Yelp
It was my first time dining in at Marie Callender's and it was better than the reviews suggested! We ordered the mini chicken pot pie combo and the mini shepherd's pie combo. They both come with a caesar salad and slice of pie for under $18 each, which is a steal in my opinion. They're called mini, but each pie is a large serving size for one person and we were both very very full at the end of our meal. You will probably want to take your pie to-go. As for the taste, if you've ever had the frozen chicken pot pie that they sell, it was very similar except the pastry crust was definitely better. The shepherd's pie tasted like what you would expect, I recommend getting the chicken pot pie. The complimentary cornbread was also great, especially with the sweetened butter. The salad was standard, although the lettuce was slightly wilted. I got the lemon meringue pie, but I like my usual order of the chocolate cream pie much better. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their pies though, it's just up to personal preference. We came on a Friday night and the restaurant was about half full, mainly an older crowd who seemed like regulars. There were only two servers for everyone dining in, but the service was great and our food came out quickly. Just a heads up, I tried to use the birthday coupon that gives $5 off two entrees and two free slices of pie, but our server notified us that we unfortunately couldn't get two additional slices of pie with the combos that we had ordered.

Chuvy D.

Yelp
Awful organization! Thanks giving pick up NOT WORTH IT! This establishment needs to do better! If people buy their pies on line and have pick up appointments times, there is no reason to wait and make ridiculous lines! This is why you just buy from your locals and SMALL businesses! I don't understand why we keep supporting these PLACES that provide trashy service. These big companies can't organize themselves. Even tho They have huge budgets to do so! Disgraceful!

Yelp
It's the only place where I'll have pie. Apple pie a la mode to be exact. Best pie anywhere

Yelp
bit torn on this review - will see how updates go Been eating at and shopping pies from Marie Callenders for a long time - love the Banana Cream, Stawberry, and Apple pies. We even dine in from time to time - yummy chicken fried steak heh. The location itself is well kept, service is nice - but the prices have gotten a bit high (to be fair California and the economy have a part in that but still....) and I have one severe nitpick on the bill - when you ask for a receipt you get a somewhat bloated bit of nonsense that only shows the total and tax in reality - doesnt break down the costs of items - and also to be fair I didnt pay attention to this when dining in - hopefully that is different but this is specifically from dropping in to get some pie and go. Please update your cash registers to actually give a real receipt - its not ONLY a trust issue - its a I cant even expense a meeting here kind of thing. overall that dragged the rating from 4 star to 3 - will be back in the near future to dine in and see how the bill works there.

Yelp
Came to Marie Callender's for pies. A buddy was having a barbecue and we were bringing dessert. Marie Callender's pies are always a hit in my experience. Walked up to the counter and ordered a double cream Blueberry and a fresh strawberry pie. The cashier quickly grabbed our order and handed us a bag containing the 2 pies in boxes. True to form, the dessert was a big hit and everyone enjoyed dessert. I've been coming to Marie Callender's for decades when I want pies and will continue to for decades more.

Yelp
Sorry no photos with this review yet. We keep inhaling the great food before taking any photos. Promise will remember next time we get together there in January. Marie Callender's: classic American fare and really good. In November it was super busy with everyone who gets their Thanksgiving dinner there. We did have to wait a bit the week before to get seated, but we understood. Normally we get seated early evening pretty quickly. I've tended towards getting a dinner salad like a Classic Cobb. Last two times there, I got the cheeseburger meal which comes with a slice of PIE! Their razzleberry pie is so good, my friend took a whole one home to mom. Last time, my other friend took home a full key lime pie. My friends got the chili. It's very good, but tastes salty. Wish they'd cut back on that. NOTE: the french fries were crispy, yummy, and good. We'll be back for sure.

Yelp
We love Sue. She's in the bar and she makes the best ultimate margaritas. Today we went there and they had a prefix which they normally do not, but it was the day before Easter. I had their potato soup, salmon, vegetables, and rice and an piece of apple pie to go. My husband had fettuccine that came with chicken and shrimp and he took an apple pie to go and also had a salad. I love it when we have leftovers. This place is awesome and it's reasonably priced.

Yelp
Went for late breakfast early lunch. Ordered the chicken pot pie with potato soup. Not impressed at ar the roux was thin inside the soup. Super bland. Not happy pretty disappointed since I usually go to the HB one. I will not suggest this restaurant drive to HB. Service was mediocre as if we bothered the server. The hostess seemed to have rolled out of bed. The vibe was definitely off. I did see the bar was a full bar but no one was sitting there. I ordered the breakfast it was ok. I will be returning to Marie calenders but HB one worth the drive

Yelp
I recently had a disappointing experience at Marie Callender's that I feel compelled to share. I had prepaid online for a peach pie, with a pickup time listed as 12 PM. There was no indication in the confirmation email or receipt that the pie had to be picked up exactly at that time or that it wouldn't be held throughout the day. I arrived at 7 PM to pick up my order, only to be told by an employee named Tommy that there were no peach pies left. What made the situation worse was what happened while I was waiting in line. I overheard another customer who had ordered two pies over the phone request at the register to change one of her pies to a peach pie and the staff did give her one. This made it clear that they did have peach pies available, but chose to give one to a walk-in customer rather than honor my prepaid order. That was incredibly frustrating and completely unacceptable. I spoke with the manager, Michelle, who informed me that no additional pies could be made and that it was my responsibility to pick it up at the scheduled time. I asked why I hadn't received a courtesy call if they were going to cancel or resell my order, to which she responded that staff didn't have time to make phone calls. Instead of taking accountability or apologizing for the mishandling of a prepaid order, the staff including Michelle, Tommy, and two other female employees repeatedly blamed me for not arriving earlier, despite there being no written policy or warning about forfeiture of the item. Throughout the interaction, their tone was unprofessional, dismissive, and at times confrontational. No one offered a refund until I explicitly asked, and only then did Michelle agree to issue one and provide a replacement pie. This is the only reason why I am giving this review 2 stars instead of 1. While I do appreciate that the issue was eventually resolved, the experience was marred by the poor attitude and lack of basic customer service. I was left feeling blamed, disrespected, and deeply disappointed, especially by Tommy's sarcastic "have a good day" as I was leaving, which was uncalled for and unprofessional. Given the challenges this company is already facing, I would hope they'd prioritize treating customers with respect and courtesy. Sadly, this visit has ensured I won't be returning to this location again.

Yelp
I Was Craving A Chicken Pot For Several Days And I Stopped In For Dinner At 4pm On Monday September 8, 2025. I Was Seated And Within A Few Minutes The Server Maggie Took My Order, Within 5 Minutes My Order Arrived. 10 Minutes Went By, Maggie Didn't Arrive To Check On Me Or Ask How My Meal Was. I Needed A Refill On My Hot Chocolate. I Got Up And Went To Ask The Host "I Need A Refill On My Hot Chocolate, I Don't See My Server Anywhere." He Replied "I'll Get Her For You." Something Wasn't Right, I Had A Feeling She Went Home." By This Time A Party of 6 Walked In And 2 Other Couples That Were Seated. Another Server Eileen Took Their Orders And Completely Ignored Me Several Times. She Finally Brought My Hot Chocolate, I Asked " What Happened To My Server Maggie, Did She Go Home?" Eileen Said "Yes, She's Gone For The Day. I Forgot To Tell You." I Couldn't Believe It!! As A Former Server Who's Worked In The Service Industry For 10 Years, They Need To Be Terminated! There Was No Way I Was Leaving A Tip .Food Rating Was 3 Stars. Most Servers Have No Idea What TIPS Mean, TO INSURE PROMPT SERVICE.

Mike W.

Yelp
Great comfort food and very reasonable prices. The Pot roast had lots of meat & vegetables and tasted great. Fruit pies were excellent too, as well as warm corn bread to start. The bar area looked very inviting too - not what I expected and will eat in there next time. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Not sure else could have made it better. Great value and food

Yelp
We just walked in to get a pie for my brother in law he loves the chocolate silk pie we wanted to surprise him with it. I can't wait til he gets home and sees it he will be surprised. The restaurant was clean and so was the bathroom. We walked up to order the pie no one was in line so we got it pretty quickly. Great service from the guy who helped us. Thank you so much.

Yelp
Disappointing Customer Service Experience at Marie Callendar's Bakery. My recent visit to Marie Callendar's Bakery at 307 E. Katella Avenue, Orange, California 92867 left me disappointed with the lack of quality customer service provided. On the morning of Sunday, April 28th, 2024, at 11 am, I encountered an unfortunate encounter with Gina, the acting manager at the Orange location. Despite my earnest request to dine in and share a full delectable cherry pie for my daughter's tween birthday celebration, Gina smugly refused, citing an arbitrary rule that full pies were strictly for take-out orders only. Despite my courteous pleas, Gina offered no alternatives, displaying a disconcerting lack of empathy and flexibility. In the face of Gina's inflexible stance, I found myself torn between two unsatisfactory options: either surreptitiously consuming the pie at my table against Gina's wishes or taking my business elsewhere. Neither option reflected positively on Marie Callendar's commitment to customer satisfaction. While it's acknowledged that the adage "the customer is always right" is not absolute, it is imperative for businesses to seek common ground and strive for mutually beneficial resolutions when faced with customer concerns like mine. At the heart of any dining experience lies not just the food, but also the quality of customer service extended by the establishment's staff. Reflecting on Marie Callendar's rich history, from its humble beginnings to its expansion, it is disheartening to witness a departure from the commitment to excellence exemplified by its founder, Marie Callendar. The transition from baking 200 pies a day in a home kitchen to the present-day impersonal and unwelcoming customer service experience is stark. Marie Callendar's must recognize that unwritten rules, such as the prohibition on dining in with full pies, serve only to alienate loyal customers and further tarnish the brand's reputation. Transparency and flexibility are essential in fostering positive customer relationships and ensuring continued patronage. As a longtime customer who fondly remembers the now-closed Marie Callendar's location in Downey, I am deeply concerned about the future viability of the brand. In an era of evolving dining preferences and increasing competition, Marie Callendar's must adapt its practices to attract and retain a diverse clientele. Rather than clinging to outdated norms, Marie Callendar's should embrace innovation and embrace opportunities to showcase its signature home-cooked meals and delectable pies. Failure to do so risks further decline and eventual closure, a fate that no admirer of Marie Callendar's legacy wishes to see. Peddling margaritas to attract clientele is not what Marie Callendar intended when she first opened the Orange location in 1964. Peddling pies was the main idea, not margaritas. In conclusion, my experience at Marie Callendar's Bakery in Orange, California, serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of prioritizing customer satisfaction and adapting to changing consumer expectations. It is my hope that this review prompts Marie Callendar's Corporate Office to reevaluate its customer service practices and reignite the spirit of excellence that defined its early years. Respectfully, Jordan

Yelp
The fresh peach pie was delicious. There were many more choices of pie that I would like to try in the future. The lady who sold me the pie was very friendly and efficient.

Yelp
I came to order a pie for Thanksgiving. We ordered the Razzleberry one. It tasted amazing. Ordering online was easy and the pick up process was smooth. The price I felt was a little high. It made for a great holiday dessert.
google avatar

Jay W.

Yelp
Had a fairly pleasant meal, however as we were wrapping up it took way too long for our last person to get their pie. Took so long we ended up taking it to go, got home and realized we were given the wrong pie. This happened at closing time so of course we couldn't even take it back to swap it for the correct one.

Dick S.

Yelp
Came for lunch Aug. 6, 2025. Hadn't been there in a long while and was looking forward to it. There was no host. There was no one behind the pie counter. I stepped into the bar area to see if anyone was there. The bar looked dark and abandoned. No one there. I could hear a few people in dining room so I checked there. Apparently the host was in back area seating a party. Speaking of party, I'm afraid 'the party' is over for this establishment. After 5 minutes or more we just left and went elsewhere. Sad. I can't rate the food.
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
When I walked in there was someone at the counter but they said hold on and they didn't come back. So I went to go sit my self they were setting up somebody else's table. We asked for menu's. We were sitting there they clearly saw two of us and the server asked how many, and then one after she gave us our drinks then she made a comment to her manager and her manager came out and made a smart remark so we got up and walked out. I've never been so disrespected. You would think for the prices they charge they would know how to treat customers. The restaurant was slow, only 2 other customers. Never going back.
google avatar

Yelp
Linguini Alfredo w broccoli and chicken was excellent! Banana crème, pecan and pumpkin pies were also the best. Ordered Service to go.

Yelp
Service is good. They greet you when you come in. One of the few Callendars left and want to keep them in business so they stay open-- all these kind of restaurants all closing and people won't know what it is when this chain was all over the city. Pies are good esp the seasonal fruit pies but their standards are all good. Love it when they have their menu specials and food is delicious
google avatar

Tatianna A.

Yelp
Wow, this location was awesome! We sat next to the bar and our server Eileen was awesome. She was super attentive and quick with everything and her attitude was infectious with good vibes. We did the 2 for 50$, it's on the last page of the menu and such a good deal. We got 2 salads, 2 entrees, and 2 pies. All of the food was absolutely delicious. My husband is not a fan of eating out but he said the menu has so many options and the food was delicious and quick so we will definitely be back at this location! Great work here by all their team members (cooks + staff).
google avatar

Eri E.

Yelp
I would say this is a pretty standard sit down restaurant if you're looking for comfort food. We were told to wait about 15 minutes for our table, but we're seated in less than 5 minutes in on a busy Friday. Service is decent, the waiters were nice and checked in on us. The food is pretty decent. Portions are reasonable for this price. I go for the beef stroganoff. It's very tasty and comforting. I haven't tried the pies yet. I'm already filled up after having the stroganoff. Ambience is pretty simple. I usually go on busy evenings but they do close pretty early.

Debbie P.

Yelp
Don't get the chicken pot pie anymore . They've reduced the quality by changing the recipe and now it's just watered down bland chicken base that doesn't even taste like chicken. It's just blah . So disappointing . I've gotten the same awful chicken pot pie 2 times now and I won't be giving them a 3rd chance .
google avatar

Yelp
Waited 15 minutes with a ton of open tables and another 15 minutes after we finally got sat down waiting for a server before my party decided to walk out. We went somewhere we knew we were going to be sat and served in a timely matter.

Yelp
We bought a cherry pie last night. The bottom crust was so burned that it wouldn't come out of the tin! So disappointing!

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoy our annual trip to Marie Callender's! It's like going back in time, when you would go to visit your grandmother and she would serve good heartwarming soul food. This year we had to travel 20 miles north, because our old location was torn down, and now is an In and Out Burger, so sad. Anyway, back to Grandma! We get the pot pie special for $15.99 which includes a mini pot pie, a side salad and a piece of pie. Choose from over two dozen pies that are made fresh daily. We have two improvement ideas for your consideration. First, chicken is inexpensive, please put some in your chicken pot pies. And second, market yourselves as providing the home cooking and comfort of Grandma's, as this fits well with the design and style of your restaurants. Turn a weakness into a strength, that's good marketing. See you next year!

Yelp
This location needs help desperately. Opened at 11. First ones in and no toilet paper in women's stall. Went back in bathroom at noon and still zero tp. Told hostess and got a blank stare along with an "ok" So back to the food itself. We were the first to sit. There was 1 server for 8 tables. Horrible service. I had to get up 3 times to ask for water refills, and my slice of pie. The manager never even came to help the server out. I did get a good lunch deal. $14.99 for 1/2 sandwich, bowl of soup, slice of pie. They did have a good variety of items to choose from. The food is not nearly as good as it was years ago, and maybe that's why locations are closing. This particular one, like I mentioned, had bad service, and the place was in need of a remodel and deep cleaning.

Yelp
Picked up a banana cream pie on my way home from work, it ended up being the saltiest pie I've ever had, not sire if it was the crust or filling but theres no way it was only this one pie. I've reached out to multiple emails and still get no response, very disappointing as we usually get pies from marie callenders for the holidays and special occasions.

Yelp
Wanted to buy a Custard pie for my 81 year old father, as that's is favorite. Couldn't find any stores or pie shops that had them same day. Called here, a low and behold they had them on hand and ready to go. In and out with the pie in less than 5 minutes. Looks delicious too

Yelp
Omg. So I never go to brunch on Mother's Day because I'm not a masochist. But, we thought we'd give Marie Callender's a shot because 1) I didn't think it would be crowded cuz it's not a hip brunch spot. And 2) it was nearby and we are starving after church. We got there at 10:45. We were told it would be a 10 min wait. That seemed plausible because the place was empty and the groups before us were all being seated. Of course, they stopped at our name but I still believed it would only be a few more minutes because, again, I looked around and saw so many empty tables. I should've taken their disorganization as a sign. No one was at the host stand so people would walk in and look around. The line of people waiting to put in their name kept growing, and I saw staff walk by but not acknowledge anyone. So our name gets called. We stand up, excited to be seated, but then she says oops. Called the wrong name. There was a solo diner who arrived after us, so he was the one being seated. We sit back down and continue to wait. We finally get seated about 40 minutes in. We go to our table and there are still a ton of empty tables! So.... It's Mother's Day weekend brunch time and they're understaffed?! I was dumbfounded. Our "chipper" server comes to our table and we immediately order because we didn't want there to be much more of a delay. We wait and we wait. Our water glasses were empty. We continue to wait. No food. We're about 30 minutes into waiting for our food now. I stopped someone and asked if we could have some water and said that we hadn't seen our server in quite some time. The server comes to fill our water glasses and then she tells us that there are no hash browns anymore because it's time for the lunch menu, so all they have is tater tots. WTH?!!! I mean... shouldn't she know what their timeframe is, or what's on the menu? And at least she could've said it in an apologetic manner or something. Smile. Make a joke. Show that you understand. Instead she just glared at us and let us know just how much she hates her job. Fine. Tater tots. Let's do this. We're starving. Our food comes out close to an hour after we ordered. And guess what.... The French toast was rock hard. Eggs cold. For some reason we were shorted on sausage, but there was a shit ton of bacon. Like, if there's gonna be any kind of substitutions, shouldn't you tell people? My daughter's over medium eggs came out over hard. That's means overcooked and no runny yolk. I had to ask for my toast and wait and wait. By the time it came, my eggs were even colder. I hate to bitch about such first world problems, but come on. I hate it when I go out to eat and I could've cooked a better meal at home. The woman in the booth behind us was complaining to the manager because she had tried calling in an order and the phone rang 16x, 20x, .... she was hung up on after finally getting thru. She's disabled and needed to call it in because she can't stand or wait etc.... The manager had excuses but didn't really offer any resolution. So I didn't even bother speaking to him about our shit experience as well. We gobbled down what we could stand and left soon after because we had places to be. We were there close to 2 hours. The eating part took about 10 minutes, once we got everything we ordered. She asked if we wanted to go boxes. In my mind I'm like, nah dude. I don't wanna try to eat this later when it sucked this much and it's "fresh". This place now goes on my Never Again list.

Yelp
Marie Callender's is one of those classic restaurants that I always forget to go to. My mom was in town and she wanted pie, so we stopped in for dinner. The service was amazing and the salad and soup bar was fresh and delicious. Soup of the day was split pea and it was wonderful. I ordered the ham stack sandwich on grilled sourdough Parmesan bread. This is by far the best sandwich on the menu! The ham is warm and the bread is crispy. A must try! Of course, no visit to Marie Callender's is complete without pie. I got a slice of the double cream lemon. Yummmmm! So don't sleep on Marie Callender's. Give them a try again.

Yelp
No wonder these places aren't lasting. Might want to consider taking your large sign down if you don't have what you're advertising. This is the 4th time we've come to this location and they don't have the pies we want. Don't waste your time making a trip here. Head to Polly's pies instead.

Yelp
I ordered a Xmas dinner on-line... the web site said (at the time I ordered) that the feast would come with two pies. However, when I went to pick it up, the personel insisted that it only came with one pie. I purchased a pie ($20) since I needed two pies at a minimum. When I came home I went back up on the site and it did not show two pies., Was this a "bait and switch" operation? I bought there last year as well... no More!!

Yelp
We have been coming here for several years ever since they closed the Marie Callender's in Irvine. The quality has been hit and miss. We've had 2 misses in all these years. Today, I ordered a rhubarb pie and when I got home, the first thing my wife noticed was that the pie was burnt. Secondly, it was the wrong pie. Instead of rhubarb, it was cherry. The filling had spilled over and was all over the bottom of the pan. The inside crust was burnt and stuck to the pan. I don't see why our server selected a bad pie and thought it would be acceptable. We toss the pie in the trash. We called Marie Callender's back and the manager agreed to refund me the amount. I guess I'll stick to the supermarket MC pies from now on.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 20 years. I don't live local anymore so decided to order on DoorDash. The pot pie came in a small plastic container, half the usual portion size, with no cornbread. Disappointed.

Yelp
I recently had the craziest lunch of my life here. This location is in a plaza with plenty of parking. The building, both inside and out, has a definite vintage feel (as do most of the customers). When I walked in an elderly woman was talking to the hostess about getting some pie. The hostess disappeared in back and this woman turned to me and asked if I was there for lunch to which I replied affirmatively. She then walked over to the hostess stand, grabbed a menu and silverware and took me into the bar area and seated me. I thought it was odd but figured she worked there. After ten minutes of sitting at a table with nobody acknowledging me, the same woman seats herself at the bar and orders a drink. I suddenly realize I've been punk'd by a drunk old lady. Wait, there's more. I walk back out to the hostess who immediately seats me in the dining area. My waitress, Brenda H., was phenomenal. Always smiling, personable, attentive, laughs at my dad jokes, etc. While she's taking my order an old woman who is with a small group of grannies at a table near me, walks back into the kitchen and starts screaming "Who the hell do you think you are!" and continues on a loud tirade as the entire restaurant freezes in pre-panic mode, ready to duck under tables. My waitress, a bit embarrassed, quickly tells me the out of control lady is known there and often throws tantrums but has never gone back into the kitchen. Flash forward ten minutes later, the cops show up and the old bitchy lady who was yelling like a banshee a few minutes earlier puts on a feeble grandma act "hello, oh aren't you such handsome young men in your uniforms...." in the sweetest grandmotherly voice. They have her step aside and inform her she can't be going back into the kitchen. I'm not sure what all they spoke to her about as they were being discreet but they finally left and the granny from hell went quietly back to her table of gangland grannies. Back to the food. I got a lunch special - half a turkey club sandwich on croissant and a small cobb salad. Both were excellent. The croissant was fresh and buttery delicious and the turkey was the real deal, not the deli stuff. Tomato, lettuce and bacon accompanied the pile of turkey slices for a wonderful sandwich. The cobb was a mini version with all the expected ingredients...cubes of chicken, egg, green onion, avocado, tomato, and blue cheese. Tasty. I also took home a whole apple pie as a dessert for a small gathering. Of course it was incredible as Marie Callender's always is when it comes to their pie!

Yelp
It's a health concern to see that they put plastic bag in the hot soup pots, you retrieve the soup from the bag (so disgusting). We all know it's not safe to drink water from a plastic bottle warmed up in a hot car because of the toxic particles released from the plastic.

Yelp
Poor service. We were there on Mother's Day and it happened to be my birthday and son in law's birthday also. There were 8 of us. The food were served for the 6 people only and they forgot to serve for the other . We were waiting patiently and thought that they just busy only to be told that they forgot . We cancelled the 2 orders that were not served. We paid the bill and will never come back. Not recommended.
