First Time at Marie’s Soul Food – Worth the Trip from Illinois! I visited Madison from Illinois and decided to try Marie’s Soul Food for the first time. I ordered the pork chop meal with collard greens, mac & cheese, and yams, and every bite was pure comfort. The pork chop was tender, well-seasoned, and cooked perfectly. The collard greens had just the right amount of seasoning and a nice kick of flavor. The mac & cheese was creamy, cheesy, and exactly what I was hoping for. And the yams? Sweet, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The portions were generous, the prices were fair, and the service was warm and friendly. You can tell the food here is made with love. Definitely a must-try when in Madison. I’ll be back!

I was visiting from out of state and had to give this place a try because of the awesome reviews and let me tell you— I am so glad I did! The staff were really sweet and recommended the fried chicken and fried catfish- I’ve never had fried catfish so that’s what I went with. The catfish was delicious! Very crispy!! I also ordered the Mac n Cheese and collard greens— overall the food was AMAZING! So flavorful and it all went so well together, there were no leftovers. When in Madison stop by Marie’s Soul Food!!!

Best food we’ve had in a long time💯 My girlfriend ordered fried chicken, macaroni, greens and candy yams. I ordered baked chicken with rice and gravy. Everything taste homemade and delicious. Reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking. Atmosphere is very welcoming and customer service is wonderful. We’ll definitely be back🤞🏾

The only restaurant in Madison I could never get tired of. My favorite meal is the 2 piece catfish with greens and mac and cheese as my sides. The catfish is fried perfectly, the greens are very flavorful with a slight kick. The ribs are also one of my favorites. They’re so tender they literally fall off the bone when you bite them. No matter what I order I’m never disappointed. The atmosphere is chill and welcoming. Customer service is always remarkable.

Marie was amazing helping me pick the foods I could have given my extensive allergies. The baked chicken was very flavorful and fell off the bone. The sweet potatoes had a lovely kick of cinnamon and nutmeg. I will definitely try to come back.

I didn’t go directly into the restaurant, but I did order from Uber eats arrived on time. Reviews were good and I thought everything would be great. Turns out everything was practically terrible. The fried pork chop and chicken was still red and Undercooked and soggy Not even crispy! I paid $.79 for ranch packets that were offbrand and tasted like literal mayonnaise! Dispite that all the Food literally did not have no flavor or seasoning! . The only thing worth having was the collard greens. Mac and cheese was like shiny and slimey didn’t seem baked at all tasted like it can from the microwave just not good potatoes salad was ok! 2/10 only because the only thing Edible was the greens! Worst soul food I ever had in my 29 years of life traveling all over the entire US and abroad! corn bread was definitely from a box as well no flavor and DRY like a Popeyes biscuit. If this is what soul food is in Wisconsin I feel so bad for yall! Never will try any sort of soul food in this state again! Literally worst ever experience

The bbq baked chicken was so dry its hard to swallow, even with the sauce… the mac and cheese was bland and flavorless. The sweet potatoes were flavorless and overcookes. This is the only soul food place in Madison and I love to support black owned business but this needs a lot of work.

Collard greens are banging. The Mac & Cheese is banging. The corn bread was disappointing. Hardly any flavor. Jiffy Corn bread makes this corn bread look real sad. Sweat potato’s slap! Fried chicken slaps. Carmel cake slaps! I’d give it a 7.3/10. Would be a 9/10 if the corn bread was good. Was really looking forward to some corn bread.

Food was so good my 5 year old kept thanking me for ordering such yummy food while we were eating. Ribs that fall off the bone, the catfish is flavorful and had a nice crust. Fried chicken was good and the mild sauce was so flavorful, I bet the spicy sauces are even better. All the sides were out of this world: collards, sweet potato, Mac n cheese. I mean I can't remember a time that I had ordered food and gotten it freshly hot AND everything was top tier. thank you Also everyone is super kind.

So, so good. We've had literally everything on the menu at this point and not a single item was a miss, all home runs baby!! Personal favorites: the catfish and the collard greens. My fiancés favorites are the pork chop and the sweet potato's. We like to share some chicken and Mac & cheese too. Yep, that's basically (but not *quite* literally) the whole menu! We've only had delivery so far so idk about the atmosphere inside or what the service is like but you can feel the love in the food so I KNOW you can feel the love in the restaurant, too. Get you some!

Wow. Just wow. I ordered via DoorDash and rarely review until I've either done a pickup myself or done delivery several times. This merited a first time review. I ordered the catfish meal that comes with two sides and a cornbread muffin, and then ordered two additional sides. I anticipated the meal sides to be slightly smaller than the additional sides since I ordered those separately. Everything came the same size, in a cup size to-go container. The catfish was well-breaded, tender and flaky. It was also well-seasoned; I chose a side of tartar sauce but did not reach for it. The collard greens are packed with flavor and that little kick they note. The dressing (available Sundays only) also packed a blend of spices. The Mac and cheese is nice and creamy, also well-seasoned. Bottom line, the keyword is flavor, that's all you need to know. Bland? Never heard of her. I will be coming back for the red beans and rice which I didn't see on the app and really wanted, but that is more than fine because the rice and gravy was perfect. THAT alone would be my chosen comfort food along with the corn muffin, which was not dry and well-baked. This meal absolutely warmed my soul and I cannot wait to come back for more. Everything was well-packed and, to me, very reasonably priced. The fried chicken will be my next pick but this will be my go-to place for catfish.

I liked the calm and homey vibe. Ordered the chicken wings and catfish. Both were served hot and flavorful. The flavor profiles are pretty simple, no frills. The Mac and rice with chicken gravy were both alright. They do have a student discount, which is appreciated

I took out dinner from here. Fried chicken was the best thing I had. It was fried real crisp. Sweet potato side was a bit too sweet for me. Barbecue baked chicken was good. Rice and gravy was ok

This place is so good!! The fried chicken meal had the perfect combo of juicy fried chicken, sweet yams, Mac and cheese and a corn muffin. The service was great as they helped us get our orders in fast. There's not a lot of seating but it's a great place to quickly pick up food togo. I definitely recommend coming here to try authentic soul food!

I've been looking for a soul food place around Madison and as a college student a warm meal is a must. I came right when they opened and ordered their sampler which came w 2 sides and baked chicken. The service was nice and quick. I can't wait to come back and recommend this location to friends as well!

Marie's Soul Food has been on my hit list for a while, so had to pull up for some late night food since I heard they closed late. However, I wasn't aware of the limited late night menu which consisted of 2 items - the Catfish & Fries and Chicken & Waffles. I'm not sure if they switch these out, but I ended up getting both to try them out. You could tell these dishes were made with love. The roughest part of the meal was dealing with the aroma of the food while driving back to Verona. The catfish was excellently breaded and the chicken fried to perfection. I wish the waffle portion was increased since we felt it was a bit thin, but still delicious. There were some complications with the drinks we ordered, but the owners were really sweet about it and offered a prompt resolution! Little tip for the owners, I recommend using an aluminum sheet as the base for the container since our styrofoam container + syrup container melted slightly due to the hot food. Look forward to trying the full menu next time!

Great food and flavors. We walked in and Marie was very patient and helpful and we tried to order. We wanted to try everything, but they had already run out of ribs. The fried chicken wings were a little bigger than standard wings and were both crisp and tender. The mac and cheese had good flavor, as did the collard greens. I also really loved the yams. The corn muffins were great though a few were a little overbaked. And the baked chicken was juicy and fall off the bone - seem to be baked in a broth with onions and peppers. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the dressing/stuffing. It was very dense and was mostly moist bread crumbs. But go, and order ahead before they run out!

First tried Marie's when they catered an event I attended and it was amazing! Stopped by the restaurant today and again the food was great. Kind staff too! Love the on the go sample meal- the baked chicken and collard greens were so flavorful!

Update: the three piece fried chicken meal was such a great addition to the menu! The ribs were also super tender and delicious!

Cannot wait to order from Marie's again! Took us way longer than we meant to order from them, but I'm already thinking about what we'll get next time. We placed an order over the phone around 4 pm for a 6 pm pickup and paid ahead of time over the phone. We ordered the meal for 3 and may have eaten it all between two of us :) I'm from North Carolina and this was the closest thing to a taste of home cooking that I've had since moving to Wisconsin just over 4 years ago. I hope they're able to expand their hours so more people are able to get a taste! And fyi - make sure to plan a little ahead, because then they sell out, they're done for the day!

Omg!!! Fall off the bone bbq ribs were so GOOD and best candied yams ever!! Great prices and didn't wait more than 5 minutes for pick up. I highly recommend!!!

We ordered the fried chicken and ribs. For sides we had the corn and Mac and cheese. We got carry out and they walked it right out to our door! The fried chicken was so fresh and tasted amazing! The ribs were also solid, with a good BBQ sauce. The sides were okay, I preferred the Mac and cheese to the corn. The corn just didn't have any flavor, so required some salt and pepper.

In my opinion the price a little high but they a real small spot so I get it and for how well seasoned all of the food is I can't complain or necessarily be surprised at the quality of the food. The baked macaroni just got that sound to it and ifykyk and the greens are insanely well seasoned, as I am writing this the flavor lingers. I was expecting bigger chicken but I did get a kids meal (I paid for the muffin and extra side) but still scrumptious, thinner breading leaves the chicken DUMB crispy and imma just go enjoy myself now. God bless this food and god bless Marie's Soul Food. Corn bread imo wasn't crazy or nothin but if they didn't the honey cornbread Jiffy got ‍‍‍

Oh. my. god. Y'all. This place is INCREDIBLE on all fronts. First off, they are following covid safety precautions to a T. You order and pay over the phone, the food is ready within minutes and you can pull up outside, give them a description on your car and they'll bring your food out. Secondly, the workers are so nice on the phone and are really pleasant while dealing with the number of orders during dinnertime. The establishment kind of looks like a house, which is the level of local I'm always looking to support. At night, you might just drive by it so keep an eye out for the "M" sign! Lastly and most importantly, I cannot say enough good things about their food. Such a simple menu with top notch quality. After a really hard week, I wanted some comfort food. I got the pork ribs with the mac n cheese and corn on the cob, all for only $13.35 (including tax) and got 2 meals out of it! Mac and cheese is never really interesting to me, but when I tell you Marie's is the absolute best macaroni you will ever have. It's not just cheese and bread, it's got a home-cooked taste to it. The sauce on the ribs (you can also order sauce on the side) is delicious without being too sweet, which BBQ sauce often can be. It's tangy and also complements the mac n cheese as well. The meat basically falls off the bone and is also tender the next day! I can't wait to go back and try what else Marie has going on!

Y'all. I can't stop praising this place to other people. So amazing! I have ordered the ribs, wings, Mac and cheese, yams and corn bread. Holy smokes. Everything is delicious. My friend loves the collard greens. I recently tried it and they were great! Everything is fresh too! This food fills my heart. Be sure to call in for your orders (make time- 20-30 minutes ahead). Curbside is great!

Amazing service with by far the friendliest people in town. The food is to die for and very affordable. Their sides are alright but the Fried Chicken with Spicy Sauce is PERFECT. Excited to try what else they offer when I come back.

I was wild about my mac and cheese -- and I usually don't care for too much mac and cheese. Best yams I've had in a month of Sundays, to boot. COVID-19 prevention measures securely in place here, as well. Just YUM!

Let me start by saying the food was Absolutely Amazing. I'm new to the area just moved 15 hours away from home and Marie's reminded me every bit of home. South Carolina born and raised and this food did what it needed to do. I order the baked chicken meal with mac&cheese and greens. Also fried chicken, sweet potatoes, and caramel cake ( a lot for little ole me but it will get eaten). Overall great experience. I knew it was gonna be fire from the moment I seen the elephants with the trunks up at the door( if you know you know). Thank you for giving me a sense of home.

I am so glad I discovered this local gem! I have been craving a great soul food fix in Madison ever since Sweet Tea downtown closed and Marie's absolutely hit the spot! The food was absolutely fantastic - I had to try all of the sides and was not disappointed. I would especially recommend the greens and the fried chicken! The employees were super courteous and welcoming - I will absolutely be back. Give this place a shot!

Food is great prices are through the roof! Fried chicken is my favorite but not enough for the price. But it is worth it for treat from time to time.

Don't tell my mama, sis, and aunties, but their fried chicken and candied yams are up there with my folks! We'll be back soon!!

I have no idea what the negative review was talking about, because this is the absolute best and friendliest service I've had since moving to Madison. From a service standpoint everyone was super friendly, and Sarah (at the register) made me feel like we were old friends rekindling a bond. Food wise: Amazing, this is exactly what you pay for, SOUL FOOD. It's simple food done right that warms you up, makes you feel good, content, and happy. The fried chicken was perfectly crisped, the yams were amazing, and the collard greens were the first collard greens that I've ever eaten til the last bite. My only complaint would be that the food was so good, that I was sad when it was done.

We had ribs, mac & cheese, greens, muffins. Ribs were nicely seasoned and fall-off the bone tender. All yummy.

This place is amazing! A must try! Madison has a plethora of really amazing foods. This place is on the top of the list.

I have never enjoyed meat so much that I've left the bone totally clean. But Marie's fried chicken and pork ribs... oh my god. I ate until I was full and then ate some more. We also got the Mac & cheese (phenomenal), the collard greens (delicious), and the sweet potatoes (so rich). I'm already planning ahead to our next chance to order from them. If you're considering trying Marie's, consider this your sign. Enjoy!

Food was great and portions were adequate! Every time I have eaten from here, the food was tasty and I was very satisfied. I just wish fish could make it to the menu! Oh yeah I walso like some gravy with dressing. I realize I am asking for more than you're offering right now though!

Ok WOW!!! We just stopped here because it was close to an appointment we had. We will be back many more times. I ordered the pork rib meal with yams and dressing and hubby had the fried chicken with greens and Mac n cheese. Each meal also came with a corn muffin. Whomever is doing to cooking in here knows what they are doing! Everything was seasoned well, portions were plenty large enough and it stayed hot for a long time. With COVID, they bring the food to your car, then we drove a bit to find somewhere to park and eat because we are over an hour from home. Still so hot you had to blow it off before eating it. Hubby and I each tasted and shared everything that we had.....both of us absolutely loved it. Only 1 request....can you add catfish to your menu?? We love supporting our local small business and that this seems to be a black owned business makes it that much better! Thank you for such an amazing meal. We will be regulars soon as we are moving to Madison in 2 months.

Phenomenal food! Originally from the Georgia and have eaten at some of the same small establishments in downtown Atlanta. This is quite comparable to many of those restaurants, with their mac n cheese being probably the best I have ever had. Went with the bbq chicken this time. Delicious and falls off the bone! Will need to try the fried next time around. My only suggestion is to add another vegetable option, like country green beans or black eyed peas.

I really enjoy this spot. Let me tell you about it. First, they are really following the Covid 19 precautions. Call ahead with your order and pay by phone. You really need to call early because this place sells out quickly. When you pick up the order, stay in your car. Call the phone number and give them your name and the description of your vehicle. They will run the order out. I have had the baked chicken thighs, wings, and ribs. Of course the wings are the best and are usually the first to sell out. But I have enjoyed all three meats. There is a lunch special, one meat, one side, and a drink with a cornbread. It's a lunch that cannot be beat. The single meat dinner with two sides and cornbread is more than enough for this girl. This is home cooking. I have gotten a overcooked cornbread before but it is still good with some extra butter or sopping up some sauce. I feel like I am lucky enough to join Marie and her family for dinner. Please give this spot a try.

I would've taken a photo, but I ate my food too fast before that happened. The current situation is call-in only with pickup on the curbside. I called and my food was ready in 10 minutes: a chicken thigh dinner with sides of collard greens and baked macaroni. Let's begin with the chicken thigh. It was quite possibly one of the moistest (I said what I said) chicken thighs that I've ever had; it was salted to a desirable level and sides and I would one hundred percent order this again. And then it came with a series of sides. Collard greens: the perfectly salted accompaniment to the chicken. Baked macaroni: I would have loved a giant bowl of this and could eat this plain and on its own. If you've never been to Marie's or are new to soul food, I would recommend Marie's in a heartbeat. Hours can sometimes change, but keep your eyes peeled on their social media pages. As a heads up, when they sell out for the day, they're done!

I just moved to Madison from the and eating here was almost like I was back at my grandmas house in South Carolina! My parents and I enjoyed every bite!!!

This is the best food I've ever eaten period. The chicken and gravy and rice was perfect and I've never had better sweet potatoes in my life

My kid wanted ribs so I did a quick search and found Marie's. Everything we ordered was so good. My kid had ribs and macaroni and cheese and he could not stop talking about how good the macaroni and cheese is. I had the wings, dressing, and collard greens. My favorite is the dressing. It had the perfect amount of seasoning . I also enjoyed that every thing is fresh and hot.

My partner and I got take-out from Marie's Soul Food last night after hearing several recommendations from friends and it was great. We called ahead to put in our order and it was ready for pick-up at exactly the right time (the food is brought out to whatever car you specify when you make your order over the phone). We were able to pay via Venmo which made it even easier! As for the food: my partner got the fried chicken and ribs and he thought they were excellent. As a vegetarian, I was only able to eat the sides: the mac-n-cheese, corn on the cob, and cornbread (all vegetarian friendly). We got a side of the bbq sauce, which I mixed with my Mac n cheese and made it even better. I was happy with the sides, but not nearly as happy as my partner was with the entrees. Either way, we would recommend Marie's!

4.5/5 -- We ordered literally the entire menu for takeout and LOVED all three proteins and really liked the sides. We had the ribs without sauce (they forgot to add the side of barbecue to the bag) and they were to die for. The chicken breast basically disintegrated once the fork hit it...it was that moist. And the wings were very solid. The sides were good too. I found the collards to be just a little too salty, but the flavor was excellent and I'll definitely order again. The yams were perfectly cooked and boldly seasoned. The mac was just fine...not at all bad, just not great. And we didn't really dig the stuffing which was different than anything we'd tried before.

What a great addition to the neighborhood. I have stopped in a few times and I am never disappointed. Great food. Friendly service. Great prices. Special call out to the collard greens that have just enough heat to have you coming back for more. While their hours are still limited (Thursday-Sunday), I plan to stop in frequently for carry out.

This review is more a confession of guilt. I've lived nearby ever since Marie's has been open, but have only been able to eat there a couple times thus far. I think her food is fantastic, and hope more friends and neighbors discover it. When I've ordered before, it has been meals for myself and 1-2 other people. Enjoying this with family and friends is a great format for sampling everything on the menu. I was a fan of all of the dishes. The meats were very tender. Lightly, but effectively, seasoned. The sides were all fantastic - mac-and-cheese and collards are always one of my favorite sides. But I'd be remiss to not mention the "Dressing" side. It was something I haven't encountered before, and I thought it was absolutely sublime. I'll also add that I really respect how Marie's has operated with high standards for safety during the pandemic, doing curbside pickup only to keep people outdoors and not exposing each other to COVID. This place is the epitome of a small, independently-owned business that we should be proud to support and patronize. We'll all be rewarded for our efforts with a great dinner!

I stopped here for food since I was working in the area. When I tell you do not miss out!!! The food was so good. Do yourself a favor n order a extra side of Mac or you gonna regret it later. Very fast, and friendly service.

Drop your taco and ditch your sandwich, Marie's is a must try. We had the ribs, wings, greens and dressing. Easily the best in Madison and rivals some of my favs back East.

How had I missed this place for so long? Exceptional food. We ordered the oven-baked chicken meal with collard greens, baked macaroni, and sweet potato sides. We were so impressed with every single item.

I went to Marie's on Wednesday for the first time with four friends. I had the ribs meal with sweet potatoes, corn muffin, and mac & cheese - everything was terrific! The ribs were the best I've ever had. Marie and her helpers/family were so very welcoming and gracious. I plan to get back to Marie's as often as I can - the food is addictive! Two friends went there later in the day and brought me a piece of caramel cake, which was also delicious.

This place has some of the best fried chicken wings you can find any where sides are good also greens are a southern masterpiece. I usually get about 10 wings and roll from there.
