This place needs help! I visited the Marin Humane Society today, Sunday, November 6, 2016. This probably the twelfth time I've visited over the past four years. Although each visit has been just as poor, I couldn't avoid posting after this last visit. First, I have never been greeted with a smile, hello or acknowledgment--ever. There are always many staff around, sitting at their desks and staring at their screens, but not even a glance when you walk in the door. Also, there are no signs or information that help a visitor know where to begin.
Today, after no one offering to help, I went up to the woman at the front in adoptions, who is always there staring at her computer and never smiling. I offered to take home an 11-year-old cat if she would waive the $65 adoption fee. Also, if that wasn't possible, I said I would take the cat as a foster. She smirked at me like I was crazy and said no. Nobody wants old cats! And here was someone ready to give that poor old cat a new better life. What is MHS thinking?!
Since I have rescued animals my entire life, I have been in shelters in Dallas, TX, Seattle, WA, and all over the bay area. One, staff are always able to waive or reduce adoption fees--especially for older that cats that most people don't want. Two, isn't it better for a cat to wait for a permanent home in a foster home rather than in a sterile room in the humane society?! Come on! All of the other shelters put cats, especially the old ones, in foster homes while waiting for permanent homes! You simply leave the ad/posting up and when someone wants to see the cat, the foster parents brings the cat to the shelter.
Finally, all the volunteers seem to be rich, white retired Marinites! Great volunteers come from all walks of life! WHY do you only have this particular group volunteering?! Hmmmmm????
Marin Humane Society, it's time to take a serious look at yourself!
