Yelp
From the outside, with the bright red Michelin signs dating back to 2011, I thought we had found a gem. It started off strong and tapered off quickly though.
I love seeing a chef's tasting menu so we opted for that. Who doesn't like a variety of random dishes the chef thinks are the best to serve hungry customers? The wait-staff was so attentive and excellent, they even asked if we had any allergies or any foods we didn't like. I said, "I really don't like squid." He said, "Okay, no squid."
We started with a small pizza that was on the heavy side with a beautiful, light, marinara. Next was steamed cod with potatoes. My partner truly enjoyed this dish and said the balance of the cod and potatoes was one of the best dishes he's ever had! At this point we were hooked because the presentation, flavor, and attentiveness of the staff were excellent.
As the server sat the third plate in front of us, he said, "This is cuttlefish..." It sat in front of us and I had a "what you talking about, Willis" moment. Did he just say they brought out something I was very clear I understood he knew I wasn't going to enjoy?
Insert the very sad sound of a very sad sounding trombone player playing "whaaaa, waaaaa." Let's borrow this from Merriam-Webster:
Definition of cuttlefish: any of various marine cephalopod mollusks (order Sepioidea, especially genus Sepia) having eight short arms and two usually longer tentacles and differing from the related SQUID in having a calcified internal shell.
The cuttlefish was chewy, fishy, and barely swallowable. Of course I tried it, but my partner, who likes squid, couldn't eat it either. The server approached the table and was curious why we hadn't eaten the squid-cousin, so I told him.
Next they brought out a stuffed prawn followed by some wonderful homemade ravioli which were palate-pleasers. For the next course, it was zucchini fettuccini, with cuttlefish. Yes, cuttlefish, and the pasta was so al dente we could barely swallow it, so we didn't. At this point we were done with the meal and just wanted to leave. One of the only tasting menus I didn't enjoy.
The servers brought us a nice gnocchi with duck, which I found quite tasty, but I really was disappointed in the meal overall. We skipped the next three courses and asked for our check.
It was an interesting experience for $200.00, but not something I'd care to repeat at Marina Grande.
