I got scammed at this place. I left my Yamaha electric violin (YEV) here to have a tiny crack repaired. The owner seemed nice about it and said that it would be an easy fix. I was very happy to have found a place that looked like an old school music shop that would work on violins. I stupidly left my fancy carbon fiber bow in the hard case along with the accessories...rosins, an electric clip on tuner, a shoulder rest, chin rest pad, etc. Rookie move on my part.
When I went in to pick it up, my YEV was hanging up by the counter & it was in a cheapo soft case...an unlined nylon zipper bag looking thing. My velvety lined hard case, my favorite bow, & all my accessories were gone. The crack was fixed & it was done well, but the chin rest was also missing off of the violin. It looked naked Tbh.
Now the worst part was that the owner kept trying to gaslight me into believing that it WAS my case. telling me that it has your violin in it, & that's exactly what I left with him. He became super defensive about it. I was being calm & was like I can see how a mistake like this could happen, but that's not my case. My case is a hard case & it has a Fiddlerman bow in it. I would never put a violin in a soft bag like this. They're too delicate. He kept going on a on, saying things like "look your cords are in the pocket" I was like "no my chord is at home plugged into my amp." He said "Look, there's no way, it's been right here since you left it." He got louder and meaner, saying things like " Look, this is exactly what you gave me. Look, I remember! Look, we don't even have any other violins here! "
I gave up & asked what I owed for the repair because I could feel my eyes starting to sting. He said "nothing". He again started telling me that it was "exactly what you left here, there's no mistake" and it was "IMPOSSIBLE that it was in different case". I picked up my violin, left the bag on the counter, said you can keep whoever's bag that is, it's not mine. He sarcastically said "oh great, we have a new case". I left, went to my car, & burst into tears. It was crazy. I'm not a crybaby but I'm not used to people pulling stuff like this on me. So either...
1) He knew it wasn't mine, but didn't want to admit it was a mistake, because he didn't want to owe me anything, so he tried to gaslight me into believing it was mine. Or...
2) He actually thought it was mine and didn't realize he gave my stuff to someone else & truly thought I was an idiot female. Hell my case could have been there somewhere, he didn't even try to look for it. He just dismissed me. But then why wouldn't he charge me if he thought it was honestly what I left there? Or...
3) He purposely took my violin out of my nice case with my nice bow, took the chin rest & pad off, and put mine in a cheap a** bag by itself to rip me off & sell my stuff cuz that's how they roll. idk what the crazy motivation was. I just know it sucked getting scammed. & it sucked getting treated like a crazy dumb bish.
No matter what, it was awful. He was horrible to me and would not listen. Tried to make me seem and feel like a dumb chick that didn't know what she had left there. Who would not know their own case tho? Musicians know what they have. Especially since I don't own a soft bag case. Never. I personally think they're trash. I brought it in for a crack, like I'd put it in a soft case lol. Plus, my bow & other stuff was with it & that was all gone! Damn I'm going to miss that bow! Fiddlerman carbon fiber bow...loved it. I never leave reviews, good or bad..I'm so not a Karen, but this was such a negative experience & I feel like it's possible they do this crap there regularly as a side hustle. Ultimately, they stole my stuff. I have to replace the chin rest, the hard case, get a new bow, etc. which will be around $400+ if I get the cheap stuff. The repair, in hindsight I should have just put a little glue on it myself I guess, because it wasn't that bad. I was just afraid of messing it up. Sigh. There's a lot of trust involved in repairs sadly because you're leaving your beloved instrument in the care of someone you don't really know. It could have been worse though I suppose. He could have kept the YEV too and tried to pass off some piece of crap violin as mine too & told me it's "exactly what you left here" so at least I got my Yamaha YEV back. Now it just needs an outfit again.
Btw it was super out of tune when I got it home lol. Probably from being in the stupid bag it was hanging in. Next time I need to leave an instrument for any reason, I'll ask to take a pic of the repair guy holding it lol & request a receipt with a list of what they're receiving. Otherwise it's your word against theirs. :(
Best thing is probably to just learn how to do everything yourself so you don't have to leave anything with strangers.
