Mario’s Italian Deli Review - Glendale - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"In operation since 1961, Mario’s is an Italian deli and grocery and your best bet for some old-school Italian sandwiches and hot plates in the neighborhood. Get there before 11:30am or be prepared to wait. But even if you get stuck behind the rush, it’s worth it. The Bad Boy Sub is their signature sandwich and it’s a monster: your choice of meat (get the pastrami), mustard, mayo, avocado, spicy peppers, and every other fixing available. Cue the midday nap under your desk." - Brant Cox

Google
Craving an Italian, quick google search w/ a focus on high reviews led me here. The service was great! I love mom & pop businesses because they provide a warmth & authenticity other restaurants don’t. They were so nice! The Italian sandwich was the best I’ve ever had & I’ve tried many. The flavors were layered perfectly. They baked the bread fresh right there! Of course I’d wait for freshly baked bread! Ordered a steak & cheese & turkey sandwich for my kids & they loved it! Definitely coming back. I highly recommend Mario’s!

I have been waiting to experience this place and was nearby so I popped in today. I was so excited! Woman was rude and greeted me to only tell me what they didn’t have today. I asked for a sausage and peppers sandwich in a container so bread wouldn’t get soggy because we were going to eat later (along with another sandwich I ordered). Said they had no container. Yet you serve whole meals. A restaurant/deli without a container. I will take my money to a different establishment. Learn how to treat a customer if you are going to own a small business. Never again. The place smelled bad also.

Google
This place has the best Italian grinder made the right way. I drive from Danielson CT to get em. The owners are some of the best and very respectful.. hands down the best and the prices, omg. I'm ct it cost the same for a grinder that sucks and when u buy a lg omg u get two and only 4 bucks more for a second one then here in Connecticut. Steve and Josh I love u guys. Love Oscar

Google
Had an Italian Tuna and it was fantastic. The owner Steve is a great guy and does an amazing job with the place and sandwiches. Highly recommended. Support local and support Cranston

Yelp
I was so unimpressed w this establishment, after the reviews I read. Coming from the southside and a diehard grinder fan of Tony's,I had high standards. My hopes and dreams were shattered once I tasted the Italian sub. I found it bland. Maybe I should have added more to it. I just don't know.

Yelp
First time ordering and not disappointed. Large Italian is LARGE lol I gave half to my daughter..we both love a good Italian hero and this place is good. Ty! We'll see you again!

Yelp
Gone here for years with my family, always had a fine experience. Had such a rude interaction today for no reason. I stopped in for literally less than 2 minutes and the woman at the counter asked "can I help you honey?" And I just asked if I could please have some napkins. I had spilled something in my car so I just stopped at the first place I saw. She handed me two napkins and asked if I wanted a piece of paper towel. I said I was all set and said is it okay if I have a couple more, like 2? And I received the nastiest look.. the demeanor change after asking for a couple extra napkins?? I said thank you and got not reply, and napkins shoved in front of me. Just plain rude, don't work in customer service if you're not friendly!!

Yelp
I work right across the street but don't eat here enough. I usually try to pack lunch and eat healthy but if I forget, this is a staple deli. I've only had a few subs but all were delicious. The cranberry chicken salad is delicious, the Italian grinder is pretty good as well but I don't love capicola. The eggplant parm is very tasty as well. Ask for extra sauce as I felt it could have used more (if you like heavy sauce like myself). The bread is always fresh and service friendly and fast.

Yelp
Always looking for a new sandwich place was able to find this place after a workout. Very clean with nice linen table cloths. Ordered a small pastrami. More than enough for lunch. Excellent bread and tasty meat. Served with a smile. I'll be back and will be trying other sandwiches on menu!

Yelp
New owners Stephen & Josh took this business over right before covid. They have made it thus far but no one really knows they serve breakfast now. I sent my husband to pick up breakfast & he got a sub. Still warm when he arrived home & we live in Buttonwoods. The Potatoes are seasoned perfectly and the bacon is not the cheap stuff yummy! I had sliced tomatoes that weren't green & hard like other restaurants this time of year. Help support your local business and do your safe favor and not cook and grab some food from Mario's.

Yelp
Great place for hot and cold grinders, sandwiches and subs. Specializing in Italian subs. Also fries, onion rings and wings. A few tables to eat in. Street parking only. My favorite is chicken parm. Be warned! The large might be 4 or more servings for most people. Chix parm is fried to a nice crisp with delicious gravy and stringy cheese. Well worth trying. My Cuz can't get enough of the eggplant parm. Choice of hard or soft rolls. If your in Cranston in the stadium area or near Bain Jr High give Mario's a try.

Yelp
Don't let the appearance fool you. Friendly and fast service; and most importantly, the food is delicious and portions are generous!! The pastrami was great. Stopped in for breakfast (weekends only) and that was yummy too. Prices are reasonable. Will definitely go back. Give it a try!

Yelp
Went to the Mario's Italian Deli roadside location just off of rt 44 in Johnston (I believe), RI- & was delighted. Been driving by it visiting grandkids for over a year now- saw it was open & ventured in. Small parking lots w/picnic tables out front proved to be my perfect lunch spot. Had the small (was great size) meatball grinder ($8), w/small fries ($3) , & a soda. $12.50 for a lunch I was barely able to finish- due to the sizes . Fantastic home made meatballs in a super fresh soft roll. Cant wait to go back & try the Italian grinder that most reviewers have raved about... Will definitely try the Cranston location too.

Yelp
This is my favorite spot to get sandwiches when I am in Rhode island. I moved to LA a d I miss these grinders! I love to bring people to try them. They are always surprised how huge the grinders are!!! Would reccomend this to everyone!!

Yelp
Not the same at all, I knew Mario back in the day then he passed, sad but his wife and daughter still made the Best sandwich in town. Today I went there and ordered small Italian skimpy coldcuts, and day or 2 old bread. Anna used both provolone and American cheeses. This one had just provolone and if it was any thinner it would have fallen apart. Trust me folks if your used to the original Mario's don't go there. Big disappointment. 6/16/20

Yelp
...place has decent portion, but I will never go back!everyone I go there there are no meatball left for a meatball sandwich??? Really ... one time I went 1 hr after opening and my response was " I don't have time to make them" ok ... major decline on business quality and care as far as I'm concerned there are too many OTHER places to choose for them to act like that!

Yelp
This deli is the best in the state. The only place I'll come for grinders and sandwiches. Everything offered is fresh and tasty. They always go above and beyond to make you feel at home and welcomed. I suggest the Italian grinder because it's a classic and nobody does it better!

Yelp
Great family owned business!! Sandwhiches are so fresh and portions are huge. The snail salad is delish and they offer a smaller portion as well!! My daughter lovesss the french fries!!!

Yelp
No one in RI beats their Italian grinders! I've been coming here for my Italian grinder and snail salad fix for 18 years! Get the grinder on a soft roll, hot or cold. It's amazing!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
They give big portions on their sandwhiches. They really pack them. Good deal for the money. I heard they have good peppers here too, but I have not tried them yet. I would HIGHLY recommend this place!

Yelp
I strongly believe that the bread/roll makes the sandwich and the rolls they use here are spot on. They have a good variety of traditional and unique sandwich options. We are picky about our delis and were very pleased with our choices! We will be back!

Babz M.

Yelp
Awesome italian grinders. The meat can be heated if desired and the roll can be toasted. The snail salads are very delicious. All made fresh. Very friendly and nice owners. Great hospitality. Stop when you're in the area.

Bill C.

Yelp
I've been coming here since they opened in a small shack on Cranston Street in the 80's. All the grinders are excellent. Try the Italian, the meatball, eggplant, roast beef, turkey ... all great! The chicken soup, pasta fagioli and snail salad are also excellent. The staff are really nice!!!

Yelp
Not sure what all the hype is about but I probably won't be going back. Ordered ONE LARGE Steak Sandwich and it cost $13. Had no flavor to it. Only good thing about it was the size of the roll. I would go to Dangelo next time.

Yelp
For a small, family owned deli this place takes the cake. I have eaten here multiple times and have never been dissatisfied. Their portions are huge, the pricing is fantastic (especially in this economy) and the service is phenomenal. The food has always been fresh, sliced right in front of you. Sandwiches are packed to the max. And the bread is also fresh and from what I hear delivered daily from a local bakery. (Try the snail salad, its wonderful) The consumer service is always personal and very delightful. They are very good at remembering costumers and make it a point to make you feel at home and family-like. All and all this deli is a top pick for me. Even over Dee's Deli which seems to be a Cranston favorite for some reason. My guess is because they haven't tried Mario's yet ;-)
