The Best Restaurants on Arthur Avenue, the Little Italy of the Bronx | Eater NY

"Directly across the street from Dominick’s lies Mario’s, open since 1919, and also serving lunch. It is decorated in the grand Roman style with busts and oil paintings, which you are likely to love or hate. The vast menu is much larger than Dominick’s, including many Roman specialties. Check out spiedini alla Romana, a gloppy toasted cheese sandwich with anchovy sauce, or saltimbocca, veal scaloppine with spinach and prosciutto in a pungent Marsala wine sauce." - Missy Frederick

11 Restaurants Where NYC Mayor Eric Adams Eats | Eater NY

"Back in February, Adams joined Bronx elected officials for a meal at Mario’s — the 102-year-old red sauce anchor on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx — which a spokesperson confirmed consisted of escarole and beans, pasta primavera, and pasta marinara. He talked about supporting hospitality workers at the meal, according to Norwood News. It was around this time that he’d been seen eating fish, despite claiming he’s vegan. “I am perfectly imperfect and have occasionally eaten fish,” Adams admitted, according to NY1." - Melissa McCart

SUPER disappointing Too Good To Go experience. I understand the concept is a surprise box and that businesses have flexibility with what they include - but getting 3 identical slices, all of which were barely edible, was frustrating. It didn’t even taste like pizza- more like focaccia with old sauce. And the crust? Completely burnt black. One of the worst pizza experiences I've ever had in my life. If this is what they’re offering to Too Good To Go customers, it feels more like a way to make a quick buck off scraps than to reduce food waste. This was my first time trying this place, and sadly, I won’t be returning—not even for regular service.

We had already thought Mario’s pizza was the best in the neighborhood, but we were really impressed when they went out of their way to deliver a pizza (I was unable to wait) after the one we ordered for pick up had the wrong toppings. They’re the best. I like their cauliflower crust as a gluten free option.

I love this place! My husband and I order from Mario’s about once a week, and we’ve tried several entrees—all excellent! The food is so flavorful and made with fresh ingredients, making it taste homemade. If you like fried mozzarella, you MUST try Mario’s—it’s a delicious rectangular wedge of cheese, breaded and fried. 😋 The staff is friendly, and the place is very clean. This is my go-to pizzeria, and I highly recommend you give them a try!

Close your eyes. Think of a new york pizza. No, not the manhattan-dolla-a-slice ones, but a good neighborhood slice'a pizza. thats what they have here. delicious fresh pizza.

The best in town!!! Always a good experience here. Our fave is the grandma pepperoni. Love that the menu has a lot of options/entrees to choose from as well. Service is always great and the staff is friendly and welcoming always.

We love the pizza here. I recently catered from Mario's for a party of 70 people - they were so amazing through the whole process - I cannot recommend this place enough!!! People were so impressed with the food. They lent us chafing dishes and everything - 11/10 place.

Yelp
Had some food catered at an event from Mario's and was blown away! The fried chicken caprese sandwiches were amazing - great flavor, perfect balance of ingredients, and exactly what I'd want in the sandwich. The antipasti platter was also great, and the rice balls with vodka sauce were the things dreams are made of! Definitely keep Mario's in mind if you're looking for great Italian food - I can't wait to try it on its own!

Yelp
So when we were deciding on dinner, my wife said she was in the mood for pizza. Knowing that doesn't happen as often as I'd like, I jumped at the chance. The only caveat was that she wanted a Grandma Pie since the sauce has a bit more flavor. I know which pizza place in the neighborhood is my go-to, but every once in a while, I like to try other places to see what else is out there. The first time we tried Mario's Pizza & Cucina was about five months ago, and we ordered a regular cheese pie. It wasn't bad from what we remembered, so we figured we'd give them another shot since they were ranked pretty high on Yelp's local list. The place was nice and clean--nothing really different from the majority of local pizzerias. However, when we got home and tried the pizza, I'm sorry to say it was a bit of a letdown. It lacked that extra flavor that comes with a Grandma Pie. The sauce was not robust enough, and overall, the pizza missed that salty kick. On top of that, knowing I paid an extra 20% for a Grandma Pie here compared to my normal go-to made me even more disappointed.

Yelp
Not sure if there is a change of ownership or different person making the pizza but the specialty slices today was okay. Ordered chopped eggplant and buffalo slices. Chopped eggplant was like a Sicilian with chopped eggplant added. It would have been better if it was more like a grandma slice with fresh mozz and eggplant. The buffalo slice had too much buffalo sauce so it was a bit overwhelming. It wasn't terrible but was not the rave I felt last time.

Yelp
Love the pizza here. Ratio of cheese and sauce is perfect, and the crust isn't too thin or chewy. The eggplant/ricotta is delicious, as is the spinach/artichoke. Service is respectful and friendly. What a neighborhood gem!

Yelp
Have only had the pizza but not impressed. They try too hard to be different or unique with the stylings and it's usually a flop, like some eggplant or spinach concoction.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from Mario's a couple times. The dishes we have tried are good. Love the garlic knots - light and fluffy with lots of minced garlic! People are nice too!
