Best Classic Restaurants in NYC | Eater NY

"Now over a century old, Mario’s on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx is as old school as it gets. The Migliucci family still owns this restaurant that started as a pizzeria, serving dishes like linguine with red clam sauce and veal Marsala. The interior looks untouched, full of oil paintings, Michelangelo statuettes, and white columns. Don’t miss the dessert trolley, and be sure to finish off with an espresso paired with a shot of complimentary anisette." - Melissa McCart

This pizza was the best I ever tasted. My first time there . The service was excellent. Nice and clean and friendly environment. I would definitely come back again

Google
This shop was recommended to me by the locals. Friendly welcome by Freddy, quick service, old school pizza shop atmosphere, and the price is fair. Friend enjoyed his meat ball hero sandwich and the chicken Parmesan to me was alright.

Google
Prices on line are incorrect. I was informed that the prices were not updated. Dinner was ordered and it cost way more than expected. If I had not ordered I certainly would have been canceled. Definitely was not worth the price. I hope they adjust their prices so people will know exactly what they are paying for. Very disappointing. Will not happen again.

Best pizza don't let you be fooled by Famiglia!

Google
Well, I just ordered a slice of Sicilian pizza, a slice of white pizza with sausage, and a grilled chicken sandwich with roasted red peppers for delivery. The food came fast and hot, but the taste was amazing.

I was going way too fast down Mulberry Hill—wind in my face, earbuds in, no brakes. The sun was just low enough to blind me, just high enough to look beautiful doing it. That’s probably why I didn’t see the van. The moment stretched out—not in that cliché “life flashing before your eyes” kind of way, but like time politely excused itself and left me to freefall. And in that impossible pause, Mario was there. Not on the sidewalk. Not calling for help. No. Mario was gliding—floating next to me in midair like a slice of pepperoni caught in a gravity glitch. His apron fluttered like a banner in the wind. He looked at me with this serene disappointment, like a grandfather watching you spill soup on a rug you didn’t realize was sacred. “You always forget to look left,” he said, calmly, conversationally, as the pavement drew closer. “You always think you have more time.” I couldn’t move. Couldn’t blink. I swear he reached out and tapped my forehead with a floury finger, and suddenly the sound of the city came rushing back—horns, tires, shouting. But everything was distant. Even the pain. “You’ll wake up soon,” Mario said. “You’ll think this was a dream. You’ll tell people about the light, the fear, the floating. But not about me. You’ll forget my name, until you see it again.” Then I hit the ground. Or maybe I didn’t. I honestly don’t know. But when I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital bed, and my first words—according to the nurse—were, “Did Mario land okay?” Weeks later, when I could walk again, I found myself standing outside Mario’s Pizza. I didn’t remember walking there. He was behind the counter, wiping down a pan that looked older than my ancestors. We locked eyes for at least a minute without exchanging words. Excellent pizza. Plain slice was great

Google
This is the best pizza in Westchester, and I even dare say NY. You can tell its family owned and they got the secret on lock. I come in at least once a week and grab a slice of pepperoni pizza. Or a calzone. I have ordered them through ubereats and they deliver it THEMSELVES. I really love the personal touch of that. There is just something so rich about stopping in, grabbing a slice, putting my garlic powder and red pepper flakes, drinking a beverage and enjoying the pizza makers bake and the people enjoy. They are a friendly staff, quick with their service and they clean up after you eat. The neighborhood loves them, they stay busy and ... you just won't regret this experience. Cheers!

Google
Slices were generous and crispy thin. Atmosphere was your avg NY pizza shop. Would definitely swing by again when we are in thr area!

Yelp
Came into town and my sister suggested this place. For the price of the pizza it's not bad, they gave us extra toppings. My sister even said I never get this much toppings when I order. I would eat this again when I'm back late at night. I don't know what else to eat since I was saving my appetite for flushing ny for Asian food

Yelp
I got to try this restaurant on a wing walk in White Plains,NY. The wings were the right amount of crisp. The servers gave out buffalo & bbq wings. The flavor was on point! Out of all the restaurants I tried wings this was my fave! I would be back to try other food on the menu!
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
I came here to try the wings they had. They were part of the wing walk event. We got a fresh batch of wings when we arrived. Hot juicy and fresh. I would put them 1st place. It was alot of competition. The service was fast. They had to be in order to give out the samples. The restaurant itself isn't huge but that didn't really matter in my opinion. I would go again and try the wings and some other stuff next time.

Yelp
Great food and prices. I just had to have some NY pizza so my second day in NY it was happening! I was in town for my neice's wedding and my family was busy with preparations for the wedding the following morning so I was on my own for the day. Believe me, I know how to entertain myself! I had delivery from Mario's brought to my hotel as I got caught up on emails and my Yelp reviews! Pizza and Yelp Make a great combo

Johana S.

Yelp
I had a frustrating experience with Mario's Pizza today. I called to place my order and asked the man on the phone how much it would cost. He told me the total was $45. But when the delivery driver arrived, he said the total was $52.25. I told him the person on the phone had said $45, but I still paid the $52.25 because I didn't want to argue at the door. To clear things up, I called Mario's Pizza again. A woman answered and told me it was $45 for the food, $3.25 for tax, and $1 for delivery--a total of $50.25. But that still didn't match what I was charged. When I asked why the driver said $52.25, she couldn't give me a clear answer and just said something vague like "maybe it was the salad." This whole situation was confusing and felt unprofessional. Customers should be told the correct total from the start. Please double-check your total and your receipt if you decide to order from here.

Yelp
Place is horrible. Pizza is left sitting around for who knows how long. The employees are rude and are hesitant to give you a to-go bag or box. Go to Familias down the street if you want good pizza. This place shouldn't even be in business anymore.

Yelp
I eat there all the time , I definitely would recommend . Their bill cutlet eggplant Parmesan hero with extra cheese is my go to meal.

Yelp
I say, I decided to stop in and try this local eatery and, to my delight, it was quite crowded. This is typically the sign of a quality eatery! That said, it did take the man behind the counter several minutes to take my order. The litmus test for any pizzeria: a plain and a Sicilian, came out to a whopping $7.75. Even the still-quite-expensive Famiglia down the street is cheaper. My order was ready shortly after placing it but the man yelled for my attention and quite rudely left my order as far as humanely possible away so I had to cross a room, a crowd, and reach over the counter to gather my food. The Sicilian was, I must admit, quite good... but not good enough to justify a price tag of $4.50. The plain was as the name suggests; quite saggy, and nothing to write home about. Poor form, not very sporting Fare: 3/5 Price: $$
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Very disappointed ordered at 9:15 when the restaurant closes at 11 and they were out of Sicilian slices for my wife. She had her heart set in a Mario Sicilian pepperoni slice and didn't get it.

Derrick R.

Yelp
Pies used to be consistently great for years, then I guess other people started making them. Wasn't the same after that. Recently, I requested a certain deliveryman, Henry. He's awesome. They apparently have internal issues because the customer is not as important as which deliveryman gets to deliver, which means too many Chiefs and not enough Indians. I really liked Marios but it's not what it was. I have privileged info about establishment, unfortunately workers are screwing around with pizzas ordered according to how customers are perceived on the phone. If they judge you as an undesirable (if you make a complaint), they will do something to your pie. Sad but true. Find another pizzeria or find out why things went the way of the DoDo. RIP Marios...

Evan H.

Yelp
Not sure what all the negative reviews are about. I stopped in today for lunch and got two slices with meatball. Staff was very friendly and food was excellent! I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Oh well - there goes my theory that there's no bad pizza in NY. What was I thinking?, "Of course there has to be," and sure enough - I've found it. Nothing against the people working here, but I get the impression that it's just a job to them. It makes me wonder if I was just fantasizing all these years of how great the food was or perhaps something has changed in my home town... I like to think something has changed. I must admit the only reason I stopped into Marios was because the places I normally go to close early, and I figured, what's the harm in trying a new place. When I visit home I have limited time and limited calories to waste so I'm really particular where I eat out. There were many things about this place I didn't like but at the very least they should be able to make a decent pizza. BB

Yelp
Pizza was really good and fresh, definitely recommend! It's not that original New York style type of pizza but it is delicious and hits the spot. Delivery was quick as well

N D.

Yelp
Unfortunately mid managed, poor customer experience and no one cares. Put in a pick up order, was told would be ready in 25 min. Went to pick up, order wasn't even started. Waited 20 more mins for them to finally start the order. They had plenty of orders, so why lie to your customers, set the proper expectations. After 45 mins of sitting and waiting after I came to pick up on-time. Unacceptable, no regard for the customers time.

Yelp
Running a few errands in White Plains and noticed Mario's Pizza boxes going down the street. So I decided to jump in for a slice having never been there before and needing a quick lunch. Very pleased with my regular slice as the crust was crisp, the sauce flavorful and the perfect ratio of cheese. I encourage you to grab a slice or order from Marios.

Donna M H.

Yelp
Delivery was faster than expected, good job...delicious tasting pizza...I look for thin crispy crust. Well done!

Roz K.

Yelp
Mario's is our go-to delivery pizza place. They have a nice, thin-crust veggie pie chocked full of our favorite veggie toppings. It's always delivered quickly too and the delivery person is almost always the same person and he's very pleasant. He calls from the street to let us know he's here.
google avatar

Yelp
Good pizza, open late, price is good for the area. I ordered a chicken slice, two white slices and a Buffalo chicken roll. (Pizza was $4 each and Buffalo chicken roll was $5.50). Total came to $17.50. Parking is difficult, WP police officers aren't always the most understanding people. If your in the area coming from any of the bars or clubs/lounges in the area I would definitely recommend coming here. It's my go to when I'm around ur area and I want pizza.

Yelp
Due to COVID, it's been 18 months since my siblings and I have been able to be in the same room as our mother who's been in nursing care. There was a lot to celebrate since she beat Covid last year and all of us have been vaccinated for many months. The nursing home found a way for us to meet in a private room and because we were all vaccinated, we would be allowed to bring in pizza and cake. Our time allocation was from 2 o'clock until 4:00 PM. Although this was to be a small gathering, we also wanted to provide pizza for the staff at the nursing facility as a way to thank them for the care and the difficult year they have had. The nursing home recommended MARIOS. Knowing that the pizzeria was familiar with the nursing home location, we agreed to order from MARIOS. I went online to get a sense of their menu. Their website allowed me to send an email which I immediately did. In that email , I told him that our order would be for 12 assorted large (pizza) pies and that the delivery window would need to be between 2:00 and 2:15 PM on Sunday, August 21. This was important since my mother tires easily and there would be a shift change at 3 o'clock. We wanted to make sure that the dayshift was able to enjoy the treats. In the same email, I asked them to contact me for the details and credit card information. I was very impressed when within 10 minutes the restaurant called me to review my order. So far, five stars. CONFIRMED ORDER: The gentleman took the specifics of my order: six plain large, two pepperoni, two white pizza, two pepper and mushroom. 12 large pies altogether. All to be delivered between 2 o'clock and 2:15 PM on Sunday, August 21. I further instructed them to make sure that they were delivered directly to our party location so that we could review the order and take care of the staff directly ourselves. HURRICANE HENRI WARNING: when the hurricane warning came in for our area, I contacted the restaurant again to ask how much time they would need if we needed to cancel due to the hurricane. He told me I would need to cancel by 1 o'clock on Sunday, an hour before delivery time. I advised them at that time that I would only call if I was needing to cancel or post phone. No call meant the delivery was on. I provided my credit card number and added a 20% tip to the order. Total cost for 12 pizzas with tax, delivery, and tip quoted $263.00 expensive but I gave him my credit card. FIASCO: on the day of the gathering, we drove the 70 miles to see my mother. When we arrived at the front desk of the nursing home, we asked if they could send the pizza directly to our gathering space. 2 o'clock came and went. 230 came and went and we saw the day staff leaving for the day. I called the restaurant and asked what was happening with my order. They immediately started arguing with me that they didn't know that we still wanted it and that they tried to call me. Of course I was in the car at the time and did not have a signal. Nevertheless, I told them that I had instructed that unless they heard from me, we would be taking the delivery. After all, I had already paid for it. IT GETS WORSE: after three, the next shift was rolling in and the pizza still had not arrived. Our time with our mother and family was running out quickly. Then it happened: The young lady from the front desk arrived with six large pizzas. Six, not 12 as was ordered and paid for. I rushed through to stop the delivery person before they leave. The poor guy had no clue. He said he was to deliver six pizzas. He handed me a charge receipt for $214. TWO HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN DOLLARS.. That would be over $30 a pie. Double the cost of what it should've been in our area. The delivery man called the boss &handed me the phone. He argued with me. No apology and FAILED to deliver on time, and now OVERCHARGED me by double. He tried to make it seem like it was my fault. The order was in writing, the order was communicated to two people directly including the types of pizzas and how many. The credit card was provided days earlier including a generous tip for the delivery driver. It's a pizzeria for goodness sakes. It's a pizzeria. THEY MAKE PIZZA. In this case, 12 pizzas. ATTITUDE LOSES THEM 2 Stars. Another deduction for OVERCHARGING ME 100% I contacted the credit card company to let them know what had happened and that I would be disputing the charge. The charge was red flagged. I texted the owner/manager to let him know that I caught onto the double charge and then I would be disputing and requiring a refund. We sang happy birthday and had cake. As we were getting ready to say our goodbyes, six more pizzas were rushed in. Way too late for the party. MARIO's lack of internal COMMUNICATION CREATED CHAOS. do NOT recommend. By the way, the pizza was OK. On another day I would rate them 3 to 4 stars for the pizza. There are other better places in White Plains

Yelp
Mario's is consistent. I have ordered the Mario's special pizza pie and the custom fried calzones (OMG!). All delicious! The cannolis and cheese cake are yummy too! I can't wait to try their pastas and sandwiches too! They don't disappoint.
google avatar

Monica B.

Yelp
Was in New York for a wedding and staying in White Plains. Being unfamiliar to the area, we turned to Yelp to find some pizza. We ordered a cheese & pepperoni & had it delivered to our hotel. It was delivered quickly & piping hot. We dug in and oh boy it was good. Cheesy, savory sauce, great crust & just all around good. So good I wanted some the next day!
google avatar

DanielleYelpsWestchester D.

Yelp
Excellent size for a slice. Even sauce to cheese ratio. A good crisp dough which cracks when you pick up and just enough natural oils. The only thing that made this not a four star was lacking service with a smile ;)
google avatar

Christina Z.

Yelp
The cheese and buffalo chicken pizza were really nice thin crust slices that came hot out of the oven. The cheese was melted with a slight brown crusted on top and a little bit of greasiness. The crust gave way to a flaky crunch on the first bite and was the right ratio to the sauce and cheese. You will want to devour this crust!! I added garlic, pepper flakes, and oregano onto my cheese slice before leaving the shop. The buffalo chicken was bite sized, juicy, and plentiful with pieces in every bite. The buffalo sauce itself is creamy a mild, and not too spicy. The pizza shop is clean and cozy with plenty of attentive staff behind the counter busy making pizzas. The service was fast and friendly.
google avatar

Ari X.

Yelp
Yuck, not good pizza. Taste like hot dough, would only go if no other options at all. Other places around are much better
google avatar

Lee G.

Yelp
WOW! The guy that answers the phone is not only difficult to understand but incredibly RUDE. I live right across the street but I'd rather order from anywhere but here. The pizza quality isn't that great even if it is a small place. I don't recommend at all...
google avatar

Kevin V.

Yelp
I've never sat in to eat, always pick up or delivery. Pizza and tiramisu always made to perfection by this place. Quick friendly and efficient staff
google avatar

Jay L.

Yelp
Ordered on Easter Sunday at 7:30pm. Order went through online order service and credit card charged. Waited 2 hours for food...no food. Called and phone was busy. Called again, rang and rang. They were closed for Easter and didn't turn off their ordering system so many people ordered and didn't get food (they told us this when we called the following day). No mention of being closed when we ordered. When we called on Monday to make everything good we were told to contact the online service they use. Will not be ordering Mario's Pizza anymore!!! Sad because they were our go to pizza place....
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
Mario's is the best! We love their pizza, salads and sandwiches. They also have the best Tirimisu!! Fast delivery and reasonably priced !!

Casey K.

Yelp
I love Mario's - they are always good and consistent but I ordered a salad and pizza last night and there was a pretty big bug in my salad. We had to throw the whole thing out. It crawled out from under the lettuce after I put some on my plate.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
My husband took me here, as he grew up here. He swore up and down it was the best. This pizza was just bland as all get out. No flavor, burnt to a crisp. The crust tasted like a matzoh cracker. My husband said they were better when he was a kid. C'est la vie! Not great! Times Square tourist trap quality pizza.
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
Generally okay pizza if you stick to the basics. Expect to get a pre made cheese pie with toppings added otherwise. The last pie we ordered will probably be the last because of this. Ordered a tomato and garlic pie. Expected no tomato sauce, because that's how you get it everywhere else. At Mario's, you get a pre made cheese pie with tomato slices and globs of jarred minced garlic on top. It was a tragedy.

Sophia M.

Yelp
I love their pizza, they are very generous of their ingredients and you're money is so worth it.
google avatar

Mariana P.

Yelp
We grew up eating Mario's pizza and love the salads. We called ahead to pick up some salad for lunch. We left the house 30 minutes after we ordered and drove from Hartsdale. When we get to Mario's, they seem to not know where our salads are. They say the delivery guy took it by accident. So now we are waiting even longer. We asked how long it will be and the guy said let me check and went into the kitchen. 45 minutes later.. we have our salads. Smh
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
If you eat at Mario's, your slices will most likely be great. Their delivery pizza in the other hand often arrives cold and crappy. Last 2 time we ordered, they gave us a 30 minute estimate, though the pizza arrived well after an hour. The driver apologized, but that didn't make the pizza any less sub-par. Perhaps it's time for Mario's to hire more drivers so they can get their pies out hot and fresh in a reasonable amount of time. But at the very least they should set more realistic delivery times so their customers don't wind up sitting around like silly geese nibbling on empty plates and folded napkins.

Joe D.

Yelp
The Pizza & Every food Created in this Rest. , Is produced from the Freshest & Most Delicious ingredients ! You Will be Happy with Mario's "Buon Appetitto" Joey D
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Service is fast and food is delicious haven't been disappointed. The different pizza options are good and actually arrives hot
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
This is a solid, slice joint that is good for lunch. It's reminiscent of NYC style pizza spots: limited seating and limited menu with standard slice options. The slices are big, floppy, cheesy, and salty. It's a bit pricier than NYC lunch spots, but you get good value for the size of the slice. I ordered a sausage ($4), cheese ($3.25) and large soda ($1.50). The place could stand to be a little cleaner, but for a couple slices, I think you will be fine. I give it a thumbs up.
google avatar

Mikey F.

Yelp
My roommates and I ordered a bunch of food from here for delivery, we placed the order over the phone. The man we spoke to over the phone was so nice and helpful and our delivery man was great as well! We have never ordered food in Westchester and had the entire order be made correctly, and we've tried many different places, but Mario's got everything correct and all of the food was amazing! It was such an amazing meal and we will definitely be ordering from here again, amazing quality food for a very affordable price! The garlic knots, the pasta, the pizza, and wings were all phenomenal.
google avatar

DaJanae J.

Yelp
Food is amazing, family size portions. Fast delivery prices are very high on grub hub and you have to pay additional fees for every single add-on.

Ziggy C.

Yelp
This is not a review for a recent visit. I am from Texas, and ate here a good while back. I was in New York for a week long seminar. I was looking for a place to eat. Found this place accidentally and got the pepperoni pizza. It was out of this world; the best I have ever eaten. It completely ruined me for the pizza served here in Texas. And the manager gave good service with a smile! Have been longing to make a trip back someday.
google avatar

Trendon L.

Yelp
In Short: Best pizza in White Plains. Of the bad reviews on this place, two of them are customers of mine at the bar. I'm going to have to look in to whether or not I am serving them too much because it is absolutely impossible for anyone to be this angry at a pizza place.
google avatar

Colette H.

Yelp
This place is super expensive for a pizza place. I ordered pizza and wings and it was $50. I don't really know how that happened but it was way more than I wanted to pay. I wouldn't go back just because it was so expensive.
google avatar

Danny P.

Yelp
I like this place. It reminds me of College. Its a small place that just focuses on the food. Its made for the blue collar crowd or people that need to pop in their place and head out. Its a small place that is packed with people on a Friday night or Saturday Night. I learned this the hard way. Timing is everything with ordering from Pizza Places. The Delivery People are nice and usually in a rush. The food is good with just a $1 delivery charge. They're best dish is Pizza with 2 toppings. Their Calzones are better than most, No complaints with their hot sandwiches, I've ordered from Nickys, Michaels, Marios, Dominos and Famiglia. Right now I only order from Marios and Michaels.
google avatar

Nils S.

Yelp
Got a pepperoni and sausage pizza and it was excellent. Nice, NY style thin crust. Mario was super friendly and most importantly delivered an amazing meal. We took it to go, but they had a few tables to dine in (every other one was closed, due to covid). Check this place out!
google avatar

Gerardo A.

Yelp
If you are hungry at 4:00 AM in the morning, and you clubbing at White Plains, this is a good option to have a decent slice of pizza, afther you hit the bars. A disadvantage about Mario Pizza is that the place is very small, and their always a lot of people in this place. A good thing about the pizza is that their are fantastic. The slices are pretty large, had a thin/crispy bottom with a light fluff under the cheese, and topped with delicious cheese and sauce.
google avatar

Kevin V.

Yelp
Probably the best Buffalo Chicken Roll I've ever had. Bold statement, I know. It's VERY thinly breaded, so the roll is almost crispy when you get it which is nice. Too many pizzarias make their stuffed rolls way too bready, Mario's knows better. Free ranch or blue cheese, and best of all cheap prices. The owners are always working the lunch shift and always make sure you're happy with your order, I come here almost once a week.

Alison M.

Yelp
We had a great pizza and dessert from Mario's. Would definitely go back next time we are in town.
google avatar

Karla D.

Yelp
A big shout out for Mario's such a good service the food comes hot. Not only myself but my relatives order from them. Today we order twice the food was so good and well prepared! Thanks Mario's Pizza & Restaurant

Yelp
Foods not great. Staff is rude and unpleasant! Deliver has also been slow and food arrived cold.
