Google
Happy to see a bakery 100 dedicated to gluten free being a mom of two celiac kids. A great variety of choices to elect from. Kids were super excited they didn’t have to worry about cross contamination. Ordered: 2 pizzas BBQ-lacked flavor, Tuscan was delicious just wish the pizza would be a little bit bigger or priced lower, pot pie: lacked flavor crust of pie was yummy, butter croissant: a bit hard but teen devoured it, everything bagel with cheese was gone faster than it took to get to the table. A bit pricey for some items but worth a stop if in the area.

Google
Very good Bakery with a fantastic choice gluten-free cookies, cakes, bread, buns, bagels, croissants, pain au chocolate, crackers, donuts, cinnamon roles,… Nice modern and trendy atmosphere and great bakery staff. We recommend as a must go in case you need to rely on gluten-free, celiac safe fresh made products. Prices are high but the value of the products are also high. The pain au chocolate and the croissants have been our favorites. Sehr zu empfehlen für glutenfreie frisch hergestellte Backwaren für Menschen, die auf Zöliakie sichere Produkte angewiesen sind.

Google
Didn’t realize it was a gluten free bakery until i read the reviews after i went- I ordered just a croissant and was surprised at its lack of flakiness but enjoyed the flavor and texture nonetheless! I was curious as to why it wasn’t traditional, thankfully i looked at the reviews before bashing them. The taste was really good and it pulled apart well, texture was doughy and soft! Would recommend for gluten free and non gluten free people alike. The two people who helped me behind the register were kind and quick.

Google
Delicious bakery products, gluten free pastries, cookies, cakes, etc with a few vegan options. Nice atmosphere. Plenty of parking in the backyard. It was busy on a Sunday morning, but worth the wait.

Google
Delicious gluten-free food, their pizzas take a while but are worth the wait. The fig & jam goat cheese is an all-time favorite.

Google
This is hands down THE BEST gluten free bakery I’ve ever been to. Best gluten free vegan pastries I’ve ever had! All of the breads have the perfect texture and the donuts are just sweet enough. The Vietnamese tea cookies melt in your mouth. After 15 years of being gluten free and vegan, I’ve never loved another bakery more. The cashier was super helpful and I bought all the items she recommended. 10/10

Google
Really nice bakery. If you need a bakery that caters to most common allergens and common dietary needs, then this is the place for you. Staff here are great and the range of products is plentiful. Great selection of fresh, packaged and frozen desserts and pastries. Queues can form later in the day so coming earlier is definitely better. Would happily return to get more treats in the future.

Google
This place was so amazing that we went back a second time already in our short trip to the area. Everything is gluten free and all the options were tasty-we tried baked goods, hot sandwiches, and coffee. All great. I wish we had this bakery closer to home.

Yelp
Such a cute storefront and bakery. My dad is diabetic so I was looking for a good sugar free alternative to a birthday cake, called around he and found Mariposa's low sugar chocolate pie! It is quite small and cost $24.50 after tip but we were able to fit writing on it. However, so happy to have found a gluten free, vegan friendly, and low sugar friendly option in the East Bay for future celebrations! The staff is super nice and the locals were very lively and sweet! Definitely a great shop with grate energy.

Yelp
Store is well organized and fully stocked Nice decor for the season Menu is easy to read Nice variety of items to choose from Lots of GF items My friend paid $9 for a loaf of GF bread Parking is easy to come by Customer service is friendly Apple Pay and credit cards accepted

Asami L.

Yelp
Definitely the best GF bakery in the Bay Area. I mean there are a lot of GF bakeries, but I like how variety Mariposa has. So many goodies to choose from! We got carried away and bought about half of what they have in the showcase. Their bacon and egg sandwich is to die for! I am dreaming of the fluffy egg. I hope you open the store in Marin county someday soon!!!

Yelp
Been here twice now and love to pop by when in Oakland! I'm not gf myself but my friend is and she adores this place + a penguino is a MUST whenever I come. I will say their pricing on some items are a bit high though. My friend didn't buy too much and spent $75. They have very basic hot coffee and free self service water which I appreciate greatly! Parking is a bit tricky but can usually find a street spot nearby.

Yelp
Mariposa is the largest and best gf bakery in the Bay Area. They have a much wider selection than all of the other gf bakeries around here. Today I got a batard loaf of sandwich bread, a baguette, soft pretzel, molasses cookie, cinnamon roll, vanilla cupcake, and an empanada. Their bread loves are great, their texture is as similar as you can get to normal bread, and the batard has large, normal sandwich size slices. I love the buttery taste of the soft pretzel. The texture is a bit dense but that didn't detract from the taste for me. The molasses cookie is delicious too. It has a very strong flavor though so don't try it if you don't like gingerbread. Cinnamon roll was mid. Icing and texture were both good, but it was severely lacking in the cinnamon goo, the best part of a cinnamon roll. Skip this and only get one from Melinda's gf bakery in Santa Cruz. Vanilla cupcake was bad, it tasted like there was no sugar at all in the cake and the frosting had an off, almost chemical taste. Empanada was great, the dough was incredible and the filling was like a samosa, which I haven't been able to eat in years. It would've benefited from some sauce though for moisture. The food is expensive but not quite as much as other gf bakeries I've been to. It was about $44 for everything I got. Even though not everything was great, I still have to give them 5 stars because of the selection and the ability to satisfy cravings that I've had for years since going gf. I also recently went dairy free and they have a lot of options that are dairy free as well, I didn't feel limited at all. If you can eat dairy, I highly recommend their ham & cheese pocket. It's the best thing I've ever gotten there by a wide margin.

Yelp
I moved here from vermont and expected Mariposa to be like West Meadow Farm Bakery in burlington, an incredible gluten free bakery with a huge variety. Well, Mariposa had a huge variety but my expectations were too high based on previous excellent gf pastries I've had. WHAT I GOT & HOW WAS IT? I got two hand pies: apple berry and cherry. I also got a cinnamon roll, a soft pretzel, a brown sugar cinnamon poptart dupe, challah, and pain au chocolate. The bread they use here is not like pastry bread despite it being used for that purpose. It is heavy, bready, kind of crumbly, and easily identifiable as gluten free. When I'm getting gluten free Pastries at $6+ a pop, I'm spending a premium to purchase something I couldn't make myself. A fluffy croissant. A decadent hand pie. This was not that; not worth the money. Perhaps if it had been a few dollars cheaper? Let's talk individual items: Challah: The challah was similar to real challah, but woefully underbaked and as a result, sort of dense and chewy at the bottom. Their problem is twofold: the tapioca starch or potato starch in their flour blend is too much, and also they clearly overmixed then underbaked it. $10 for a small loaf and it was so sad. Edible, yes, but not that enjoyable. Cinnamon roll: The cinnamon roll was the best item, 8/10. It was certainly flavorful. Good amount of cinnamon and frosting, but again the bread is just not the type to use in a pastry. Handpies: The handpies are just fine. They are not structurally sound. Handpies are also supposed to be made out of pie dough, but Mariposa opted to make it out of the same dense bready dough that everything else is made of. The cherry hand pie was weirdly chewy. They had enough filling though, which was good. Pop tart: The pop tart had no filling, just a whisper of what was once brown sugar now melted into that same bready dough. Pretzel: The soft pretzel was nicely salted but again the dough was an issue. I felt the texture was most like the gluten version-- not as light but definitely close to a real soft pretzel. Chocolate croissant aka pain au chocolate: The pain au chocolate was generously filled just like the real ones but the bread was not even close to croissant bread. That was so sad because when I looked at its inside it certainly had the APPEARANCE of a croissant. Like the appearance was flaky with the fluffy look, but the texture was not flaky-- instead very dense. Pastries were helped by warming in the oven/microwave on a low setting, but not much. DO THEY KEEP? Another big issue I had with Mariposa is that their baked goods don't keep well. I stored them in a cool dry place in airtight containers overnight and less than 24 hr later they were already stale. WORTH IT? It wasn't worth the money; in this area you can get better GF pastries from Life is Sweet. These items didn't taste BAD, they tasted just fine and the fruit pies had ample filling. It's fun to try and see. But they weren't good enough to justify spending that much again. I could've made every one of these pastries at home and made them taste more like the real thing, rather than this heavy mess of dough, and I'm not even that good of a baker. Schar sells better croissants at Safeway for $10. And wholly gluten free makes better pie crust for like $3.50. I mean they even sell that SAME crust for a markup there. I don't think I'd be so bummed by this experience if things had just been a bit cheaper. It was at least $6.50 for even the smallest items. LAYOUT The shop is very small and not laid out smartly at all. It would be cozy if there was just one customer I think, but Mariposa is evidently popular so there were about 8 people inside when we were. It's extremely difficult to get around and look at things when there's more than two people in there.

Yelp
An incredible gluten free bakery! Such amazing options- my personal favorites include their cinnamon rolls, chocolate croissants, and their egg breakfast sandwiches subbed on a croissant. Service is good, and this is my favorite gluten free place in the area. It has such a great variety of pastries.

Kim B.

Yelp
Stopped in to try something new. Got the chocolate chip bagel. I have always really enjoyed the texture and flavor of bagels. However, I was really disappointed in this one. It doesn't taste at all like a bagel, it does not appear to have been cooked in the same fashion as most bagels. I seldom throw away food, but I couldn't bring myself to eat this. I would never recommend it. The service is friendly. The store is clean and inviting. I would give both service and the store five stars.

Nailah A.

Yelp
The service was Great! However, I did not purchase anything because I was looking for sugarless desserts. Lol I should not believe everything I read on the internet. They make everything with sugar. I don't eat a lot of sugar. But the young man who helped me was caring and apologized. lol I would recommend because the desserts looked sooooooo good and the customer service was on point!!

Samantha D.

Yelp
Best. Cinnamon. Roll. Ever. I had to go back and double check that it was allergen free because it tasted so good. 10/10!! The worker that helped us was so kind and patient. If you are gluten, dairy, soy, nut, or anything free, this is your place.

Gabe P.

Yelp
I had heard about Mariposa before but I wasn't sure why or where. I showed up and immediately found out it everything was gluten free. This is enough to infuriate me because I guess I love gluten. I want all the gluten. Don't short change me on my baked goods. News flash, I was not short changed. I got a chocolate chunk cookie that could have been mistaken for any bakery's regular chocolate chunk cookie. I also got the cinnamon sugar pop tart thing. I'll tell ya what, I was a big fan of that guy. Of course I'm a fan of the original cinnamon sugar pop tart. Mariposa went and improved on the damn thing and I'm here for it. And somehow it was gluten free. Kudos to them. If you can't eat gluten then I doubt you find a better bakery than this. If you can eat gluten then it's not the best bakery there is but it's going to do the job solidly. (4.1 Stars)

Amy S.

Yelp
If you eat gluten free, you know most gluten free baked goods are terrible... but not Mariposa. It's so good your friends will wish they were celiac! I've had the pasta, ravioli, cinnamon rolls, cookies, bread.... It's all mind-blowingly delicious. The texture is just as good OR BETTER than regular, gluten items from other bakeries. The flavors are outstanding. I don't know how they do it. Whatever their magic strategy is, if you're gluten free and you haven't had their pastries, you are not fully living life. Run, don't walk, to this bakery!

Jose T.

Yelp
Food wasn't great. Simple salad with bland dressing. I thought the pastries would be better. No luck. Heard so many good things. They need to update their menu with what gluten free looks like today. Hope this is helpful.

Sarah T.

Yelp
Well folks, it still tastes gluten free. What I'm looking for is a place that tastes like a professional baker and does not taste gluten free. However, it is one of the few options in the area. Dough on the hand pies is heavy. As I ate the hand pie the dough was also crumbly. Pretzel is well salted but the dough doesn't taste like pretzel dough and is also a little dense Pop tart: not much filling. The dough had a pop tart style texture but was overall adequate. We also got a loaf of bread Cinnamon roll And will edit review when those have been sampled

Kendra W.

Yelp
This is a great place if you are gluten free and vegan! I'm sure they have more to offer than those two things but I'm an a little unfamiliar as this is out of my territory if my eating realm. I came here for a friend who loves this bakery. She like the cinnamon rolls, donuts, and bread! So I came here to get her some donuts and she absolutely loved them! They come in a pack of 5 and they are $18! So a little more than your average donut at a donut shop but come on let's be real your paying for quality and health! So for me it was totally worth it! There's not many places that can make something that is gluten free and vegan taste delicious and we got no complaints! Thank you Mariposa! We will be back soon!

Angel A.

Yelp
yummy, i got the cinnamon apple hand pie. it was good. ask them to warm it up before they give it to you, or they lowkey wont want to (but they will). i got the lemon tea and it was a bit too tart and sugar made it worse lol. the vibe was cool but i just ate in my car.

Bruce B.

Yelp
Worth the trip across the bay for excellent gluten free treats. Try the GF croutons. Makes all the difference

Stephanie M.

Yelp
I've been going to Mariposa for a few years now. They have a huge selection of gluten free food which I enjoy. It's expensive but worth it.

Steve S.

Yelp
Great variety of gluten free items. There are so few places available that I'm glad that this place exists. It definitely tastes healthy and gluten free. My kid is only 3 months into a celiac diagnosis and does not enjoy the food here - it's too obviously different. We can make things at home that are much closer to regular baked goods. For me as an adult it was fine, but if you are hoping for a bakery that seems like a regular non-health food bakery this is not it.

Erandi D.

Yelp
My all time favorite gluten free place!! As a celiac, this place is heaven! I highly recommend the Deli sandwich, and their chocolate chip cookies. They also have a little shopping section for you to pick up pasta, packaged goods, and frozen items. The customer service is fantastic and they've recently opened up their indoor seating so you can enjoy your goodies inside or on their little outdoor patio!

Ann Marie D.

Yelp
This bakery is more like a traditional bake shop than "healthy" save that it is gluten-free. There's a lot of simple carbs, but the food is yummy and I don't think anybody that can't have gluten will miss the wheat. I like the way the food is wonderfully displayed. The place is kind of sit down, but not really. It's more like takeout. The service is sincerely friendly.

SL L.

Yelp
To start with, there are some products that I absolutely LOVE here: the Viennese Tea Cookies (basically Russian Tea Cookies) and the ham & cheese pockets. The cheddar scones, ravioli, and spanakopita are pretty good. I sometimes crave their bacon & egg breakfast sandwich. All of it is expensive, but these items are worth it. Even my non GF friend likes their sandwiches. The breads, bagels, croissants, cupcakes, and most cookies are nothing to write home about. You can find waaaayy better GF bagels at a shop in Richmond (google it) that also sells online and at Berkeley Bowl, and the best GF sourdough bread made in Berkeley (google it, srsly) and also sold online and at Berkeley Bowl and other markets. Now those 2 product are worth writing home about (and cheaper, too, I think). As far as Mariposa's bread and cookies go, you can find GF ones that are just as good at Trader Joe's. I think the quantity of their offerings dazzles people and, especially for visitors from outside the area, makes them feel like a kid in a candy store. It is that, but if you look (taste) a little deeper you won't be as dazzled.

Sara R.

Yelp
A great option for those that must buy gluten free. Good croissants although it is obvious that they are gluten free. The same is true of the yeasted breads and rolls; they really aren't worth eating. The cookies are good, but it is easy to make those gluten free at home -- and much cheaper. It's a small operation so they sometimes run out of things but that is par for the course with a unique artisanal company. The website is a little hinky, as is online ordering.

Christine S.

Yelp
Omg yum Please make banana cream pie oh my with that same crust you use for the key lime pie - yes please !!!!

Patrick S.

Yelp
Longtime fan of this location and the one in the SF Ferry Building. Today I picked up some bagels and molasses cookies, both were very good. As with a lot of GF baking the texture is not the same as a wheat product, but these are well done and the variety they provide is huge (especially at this location). They also have a cafe which can make food using their products, which is super fun for those who haven't have a good bakery sandwich in a long time. Prices are a little higher than what I'd consider normal for a non GF bakery in our area, but these are specialty items so in the end it seems fair to me. Parking is easy, you just have to know the trick (once in their driveway keep going past the business to the out of sight back lot, it's huge).

Alisha S.

Yelp
I was so glad to be in there area because it meant I got the chance to try this GF bakery I've heard amazing things about. It's been hard for me to a find a GF bread for my morning toasts that doesn't taste like cardboard, so discovering the sandwich bread at Mariposa was life changing!! I also tried the croissant and bear claw, both so good and the bear claw doesn't taste have much of a different texture from a regular one. I will 100% come back or order online to get more GF goodies. The inside is also really cute and a great spot to grab a coffee and a bite.

Bridget B.

Yelp
Such yummy gluten free treats. I can't wait to go back and I like the Embarcadero spot as well. Thank you for offering this lovely business since I seem to never bake at home anymore.

Tania C.

Yelp
I've lived in the neighborhood for years but just recently found Mariposa as I'm newly GF. Standouts: penguinos (decadent and not overly sweet), cinnamon sugar donut holes (taste like a churro), Turkey Reuben sandwich (SOOOO GOOD and served piping hot) Good but not great: pain au chocolat (dense! but so chocolatey), cheddar scones (mealy), almond raspberry croissant (also dense but the jam hits) Line on a Sunday afternoon is sloooooow. I align with folks who are asking for more GF bakeries, it definitely feels like Mariposa is the only place to find these treats and food, and this impacts the wait time. Outdoor seating is okay but cars drive literally 1 foot away from you as they go through the alleyway, kinda crazy. Overall I'll be back soon! I'm gonna try everything!

Joanna A.

Yelp
Amazing gluten free offerings made in a gluten free kitchen with love for gluten free folks!

Berrin Y.

Yelp
They are not appreciate you as a customer. Today in total we spent. almost $300 there. They were worried to give a free cup of coffee to show their appreciation. Generally when I walk in to that shop atmosphere feels tight, not happy and unpleasant. People who are working there feels like under lots of pressure Sad that such a great food with terrible costumer service and management. Every time I get out of there I feel upset.

christin m.

Yelp
My favorite bakery in the Bay Area There are so many delicious, sweet and savory options. It is hard to pick.

Angela G.

Yelp
Max's Mediterranean Pizza is NEXT LEVEL!! Thank you to the staff member that recommended it and to MAX for making it!!

Daisy M.

Yelp
I love the store. The service was fast and everyone was super friendly. This location had even more variety than the one at union station (I think?). I love this place and will come again if I am in the area! Thanks!

Sophie B.

Yelp
Just tried their Parisian Toast for the first time, and it is so satisfying! Warm, savory, sweet.... my taste buds didn't know where to focus! I'd skip the fresh baked goods because they're dense and dry, but their pecan pie is worth the hefty $30 price tag (I know!) as is their selection of gf fig newtons and fresh pastas. Plus, Mariposa is female POC owned :) it's just too bad there have been reports of them not treating their employees well. It's so hard to find a place you can feel good about spending your $ at these days (if it's not one thing, it's another....)

Yasmin F.

Yelp
The most fantastic, spectacular, gluten-free bakery there ever was! This bakery is the only place you'll find good gluten-free croissants, and their customer service is excellent! The quality is excellent, everything is delicious, and I wish there was one closer to my house, but I am so glad they ship. This is my go-to for any kind of holiday baked goods or if I feel like treating myself. Try it! You won't be disappointed! My favorites are the walnut, chocolate brownie, the chocolate, chocolate cookies, and the butter croissants. Chef's kiss!

Elena C.

Yelp
I came across Mariposa Baking Company while looking for gluten free breakfast places. So far I've had the their bacon and egg breakfast sandwhich, ham and cheese pocket, cheese pizza and pain au chocolat. At a first glance, the breakfast sandwich appears small and made me question if it was going to be filling. To my pleasant surprise half of the sandwich was more than enough for me. So please don't be fooled by the size. The staff is easy to talk to and will help you find items. At the entrance there is a deli fridge/freezer full of goodies that can be purchased for making at home. Their cheese pockets tend to be very popular. So far everything I've tried has been delicious and filling. The pizza is one of my favorites. It bakes easily in an air fryer and comes out nice and crispy. I definitely make sure I stop by Mariposa Bakery whenever I'm in the East Bay. Highly recommend.

a t.

Yelp
Ridiculously priced for the quality. Even for gluten free., ever want to pay $60 for an ok ish apple pie? Now is your chance! The raspberry cake has a hint of raspberry and is on the dry side. Service is always indifferent and apathetic and they never say thank you. Skip this place and head to flower craft instead. .

Roberto N.

Yelp
Food is always very good! I've been here many times & no matter what I order, it is always delicious!

Erin B.

Yelp
Best gluten free bakery in California. Get the double chocolate cookies and whoopie pie. Love this place so much.

Joe V.

Yelp
This place is good, but very expensive so probably save your money and go somewhere else that can accommodate you or health needs.

Lauren S.

Yelp
I found out i have an auto immune disease 7 years ago- wheat is a no go. Anyone else in my shoes who is gluten free for any reason knows- it sucks. You can adjust and get used to it but it has its hard moments! This place is such a treat! Sweet, savory .. so so good. Thanks to my co worker for reminding me about Mariposa by bringing me the little individual key lime Pie- so good! GF pretzel Fig jam and Goat cheese toast.... All so good.

Maya R.

Yelp
A great little bakery and cafe hidden away on the other side of all the temescal activity! Went for lunch with friends and we were able to find lots of options for all diets. The bread is all gluten free but you can't even tell! My friend and I split the spanakopita and fig & goat cheese toast. Loooved the toast and spanakopita was a lovely savory pastry though a little flatter than I hoped. The cafe itself is more for take out/outside eating and on a rainy day it was cramped and only 1-2 groups could eat at a time. Will want to try their drinks and sweet pastries/cakes/cookies in the future!

Alissa N.

Yelp
My 8 year daughter and I were referred here from a social worker at Oakland Children's Hospital. My daughter was diagnosed with Celiac 8months ago. To say she was absolutely pleased with their selections and overall delicious subs is an understatement. She said "Mom if my belly could dance, it would definitely be dancing " Needless to say we are very pleased and would recommend 1000%. We hope to visit again soon when we are in the area. In the meantime I will be ordering online. Thank You for absolute amazing Gluten Free options!!!!

Melanie B.

Yelp
Great selection of gluten free baked goods. A nice treat for those of us who have had to gluten free.

Barbara O.

Yelp
A haven for the gluten free! Fantastic croissants, bagels, bread, etc. You would never guess they are made w/o gluten.

Catherine N.

Yelp
This bakery needs competition because they are significantly over priced, the desserts are too sweet, and the service is lacking. They consistently open a little late, even though 9am is not early in the baking world, and don't have the oven already warmed up to start serving breakfast food efficiently. In supply and demand, and people like me come here because there isn't another dedicated GF bakery but if Flour Craft opened in Oakland/Berkekey, or another such place, Mariposa would be in trouble.

Kelly R.

Yelp
I was sent a gift package of goodies for my birthday and it was such a delightful surprise. Everything was delicious, especially the Viennese Tea Cookies, and it was all packaged beautifully! We will be ordering again. Thank you for doing mail orders for those of us who aren't local!

Stephanie G.

Yelp
It was my coworkers birthday and I needed to get her a cake, but she's gluten free. I was so happy when I found this bakery! Im always hesitant to try bake goods that are gluten free from places I've never tried because many places forget that flavor and texture are important too, not just removing the gluten. This place did not disappoint! I ordered a dozen cupcakes with various flavors, all of which were not too sweet, moist, and packed with flavor. The guy behind the counter was super helpful in helping me to select the flavors and explaining the concept of the shop. Though I'm not gluten free, I would go here just to get a cupcake because they're that good! Plus, they offer other gluten free items too! A true gem of a bakery. Food rating 10/10 Customer service 10/10

Victoria T.

Yelp
Never fails to be delicious! Employees are helpful with many different allergies, and even new/seasonal items are labeled well. It wasn't too crowded this time around so we were in and out quickly.
