Taqueria By El Prieto Brings Late Night Tacos to Chula Vista | Eater San Diego

"For the past 27 years I note that Mariscos El Prieto has operated as a fleet of Mexican seafood-focused food trucks, routinely stationed in Chula Vista, El Cajon, and on University Avenue." - Helen I. Hwang

This is one of the best fish taco/ burrito truck this side of town! The batter they're made in is so light and crispy, along with the soft, light, and flaky texture of the fish; truly a delight. Price is reasonable just don't get them to go(if you don't want your tacos to get a little steamy and soft. I haven't tried the rest of the seafood menu, but it's due to an allergy to shellfish i have however, I'm very certain it's just a delicious as their tacos. You also get a small seafood broth too start off. Depending on what time you go, it may be somewhat crowded and busy so check the hours it's most busy in the graph

See video! Staff is very helpful, especially if you don't speak Spanish. The free pot of sopas to serve yourself is perfect as you wait for your order. Which they are quick to get it out to you👍

I had one of the worst dining experiences here on Saturday. The seafood was completely unacceptable undercooked, old, and tasted like it had been sitting out for days. On top of that, the kitchen staff were yelling at the server right in front of customers. The entire environment was unprofessional and uncomfortable. I was referred by a coworker, and I regret even giving this place a chance. I work for a large corporation and I will absolutely be sharing my experience. This was beyond disappointing, and I will never return.

I got recommended from Panchito the construction guy. He was not kidding what a recomdation. This place is delicious everything I had was amazing. My wife from Sinaloa and she an expert in Mariscos and she loved it as well. Thank you Panchito keep up the good work here.

Google
My favorite in San Diego. I love the soup they give you to dip in. The service was fast. The food melted in your mouth. I would drive hours to eat here again.

Google
First time eating here on Sunday the 15th. Long wait for the "caldo de 7 mares" bowl. But we were told when we ordered. Soup was good but it comes accompanied with very oily tortillas. I did not like the personality of the waitress that attended us, short Mexican lady with bleach blonde hair in a ponytail. Bad attitude. Also the assistant staff are not very attentive, after drinking one Modelo beer I asked him for another and he never came back nor did he come back with extra garnishments for the soup. I might come back again (2 nd chance) and try some other food but hopefully with a different server.

Google
Best fish tacos ever. I've been coming here for years and want to try other things out but the fish tacos are soooo good it's hard to not order them and the portions are huge. I had 3 tacos and I'm 6'2, 220 pounds and can eat a lot of food but 3 is probably too much for the average person especially if you're having cosomee.

Google
So I bump into this mini ranchero cabaña taco place. I totally recommend it! There asada tacos are bomb. We got a little of everything. There aguas Frescas are homemade and there tortillas for the mulas are too. The servers are awesome (love their outfit by the way). They have birria, mariscos and tacos…. They are in the parking a lot from “Vargas birrieria”..
google avatar

Laylah G.

Yelp
First things first this is not a restaurant, but two food trucks that set up a shade cover and high top tables between them in a parking lot. Secondly, I didn't even bother to pull into the parking lot, there was street parking readily available. I did see an employee of some sort assist with parking cars and moving them to let others out, kind of like valet but not. Next, this place was BUSY. People had their tailgates down just eating at their cars all up and down the parking lot. After eating there I can see why! I don't usually eat at food trucks but we were in the area. They have both mariscos and birria available to order at either truck. It's ran like a well oiled machine. The tacos were all over $4 each (typical) so I ordered 2 birria tacos. The condiments are all in front of the truck to dress up your tacos and you just stand where you can to eat or order to go. The tacos were STACKED. They use good sized tortillas and fill it right up, which I appreciated. Their food and service was great, I can't wait to go back and try their mariscos!

Yelp
Mini vacation in SD my husband had mentioned his coworker said this food truck had really good fish tacos. Stopped by today around lunch time. They were busy. There was a person assisting with parking. Though they were busy they worked fast and efficient to take the orders and get them out. Salsa and other condiments were all self serve. Which is quite convenient and no limit. My husband and I ordered: 5 tacos de asada, 2 piscado tacos, 2 cabeza, 1 tripas and camaron tostadas ceviche. Perhaps false advertisement but the picture on their menu showed beans on their taco de asada however it didn't come with beans when we got our order. The tacos were huge and generous with meat for the most part and it was pretty inexpensive compared to other places for the size and quantity. The asada meat was good but felt it could use more seasoning. The cabeza was tender and flavorful. The tripa taco was quite disappointing, it had alittle bit of meat it was not crunchy and it had a mixture of other of meat like chicken. The pescado was my favorite it was crunchy and it had so much flavor. The ceviche Cameron was also very good. Overall the food was good and filling the fish tacos were solid I would recommend. The price and service were great.

Yelp

Yelp
Hands down the best Mariscos I've ever had. So much flavor packed into each bite as it bursts into your mouth. High quality ingredients. Delicious taste. Worth every penny. This hidden gem has two food trucks that focuses on Mexican seafood dishes and birria tacos. They have pretty much everything else you can think of when it comes to Hispanic cuisine. I went to visit San Diego with friends and we came here twice as it beat every other option we chose in comparison. With each visit, it was packed to the brim with people all excited to try the food. Service was fast and efficient. Had an awesome side self serve with sauces, limes and radishes. Very summer-esque. This place is a must visit if you are in the Chula Vista area in San Diego! Insane spot.

Yelp
This is a mariscos food truck so do nog expect a typical sit down restaurant. Although they do have tables where you can eat while standing if needed, it was so packed considering it is a holiday I just ate in my car. I ordered tacos de camarón y pescado both batter fried and they were delicious. Only thing was my tortilla was a bit cold which made the tortilla a little hard. This is also the reasoning as to why I'm giving the place a 4/5. My brother ordered the shrimp quesadilla which was a huge portion, delicious, and filled with grilled shrimp! Don't forget to ask for a caldo de Camarón on the side filled with flavor I added limon as well as hot sauce and dipped my tacos in it Overall food was amazing, if seafood isn't your jam they have carnivore options as well (: as it is a 2 in 1 joint food truck spot. They have options of your typical tacos as well as birria.

Yelp
Wow, what a gem of a food truck! Located in a strip mall full of auto shops, you wouldn't be able to miss them! There's not alot of parking but what's nice is that a few spots had signs indicating they were for Mariscos customers. I only tried the seafood truck this time but would def come back to try the meat one. We ordered the pescado tacos and they were so fresh and delicious, as well as perfectly fried. I got two but wanted to eat even more. Lol Their toppings were plenty but not so much that everything spills out. They have a few standing tables as well as hot sauce.

Yelp
Seriously the best mariscos I've ever had- such a hidden gem!! This spot consists of two food trucks, one serving meat and one serving seafood. You can order from both menus; and food will be called out from the corresponding truck. The second we placed our order, the food was practically out. Super fast. We were visiting friends in San Diego, and my bestie said this is the best spot for great seafood. She was spot on. We came twice during our 4 day trip because it was that good. They also offered this tomato based self served soup which was such a great bonus. Ambiance was fun. There's a tent connecting the two trucks which offer shade and protection. They had standing tables as well, and provided plenty of self serve toppings. Food was so good I forgot to take pics both times I went. 10/10

Yelp
By far the best Mariscos in San Diego County I've had, fresh and very well portioned. I normally get Atún Especial and Aguachile de Callo. Very easy to get to, employees are very nice and it's very cheap considering the amount of food you get.
google avatar

Ernesto S.

Yelp
We saw this place on social media and thought we'd give it a try. It was okay. I get the concept of having the different food trucks. It took a while for our order to be taken and since there isn't one kitchen, the food came out at different times. The restroom was at an adjoining restaurant that appeared closed, but the kitchen was being used. As I looked closer, I saw a table with about two dozen cooked and packaged Costco chickens. I found that to be interesting and made my own assumptions of what the chicken meat was being used for.

Yelp
Best seafood and birria tacos in San Diego. My favorites are the fish taco, tostada loca and birria tacos.

Yelp
Great food everything here is delicious you can't go wrong seafood of the birria and carne asada are perfect I would eat here every day.

Yelp
Fresh seafood tacos and flavor-packed ceviche are a must-try for anyone looking to indulge in a delicious, authentic taste of the sea.

Yelp
Awesome spot for a variety of tacos. They have 3 lunch trucks serving mariscos, tacos varios and asada, adobada and birria. It can get busy so if you want to dine in you might have to wait a bit. I've never waiting more than 10mins. The food comes out nice and hot. I've also ordered to go!

Yelp
Cool idea but not great. I thought we would show up order our food from one of the 3 food trucks and sit down at any open table to eat or eat in the back of our truck. It wasn't. The seating is reserved and the "hostess" seats you. It just felt very unorganized. I was standing in what seemed like the line to put our name on the list when another couple just bypassed us and got their name on the list. At that point we decided take out (eating in our truck) would be faster. It wasn't. Everyone and then some got seated before we got our food. It took over 40 mins for 1 burrito, 1 tostada, 1 muleta, 2 horchatas. The burrito was al la diabla shrimp. Very average and boring. The tostada was camarón cocido. The shrimp were whole which felt more like a cocktail than a ceviche. The tostada also tasted stale and old. The muleta was the best part. Only complaint is it came with salsa on it and I wasn't told nor did it state in the menu so I couldn't feed it to my 1 year old (which is was for her). Will not be returning.

Yelp
Not much of a taco eater, but my bro has been raving about fish tacos at this place whenever he goes down to SD. So made it a day of taco tours to try all the ones he loves, since I also wanted to try the Yelp top birria tacos at El Fernandez a little more south from here (they were closed for the Thanksgiving weekend!). Got a jump on a Saturday morning to try as many as I could. Hit this first at 9:30am and there was already quite a bit of people eating. And more people showed up after I got my order in, so it seems to be a very popular local joint. I never really understood the appeal of food trucks honestly, but this place actually changed my mind! The fish tacos were indeed delicious!!! This seemed to be an amazing combination of each ingredient that made for such an enjoyable taco. - The piping hot fresh fish - did burn my tongue a bit so be careful (this aspect changed my mind about food trucks actually having an advantage over sitdown restaurants. can't beat food hot/fresh out of the kitchen handed to you 2~3 feet away with no chance for it to sit to get cold or soggy) - The tortilla - very comforting and tasty - The cabbage/veggies/sauce - so crunchy and fresh. Just the combo of flavors and of textures provided by each component made for an excellent fish taco indeed... (vs. my typical King Taco in LA which is just all about the carne asada and salsa verde, since it's tasteless tortilla in comparison) I have renewed respect for food from a truck after eating here... Can't beat piping hot fried fish in delicious tortilla and super crunchy cabbages!

Yelp
Stopped at this hidden gem on Sunday 4.21.24 they had 2 trucks!! Service was fast . Lots of people for a Sunday afternoon their fish tacos were a hit. Will return

Yelp
El Prieto proved to be a decent food truck experience. I had a surf and turf burrito and it was something that easily could have been made at home. Burrito just had a lot of grilled onions and little bit of sauce. Although the food was okay, the parking was not great and the service was lack luster. Overall atmosphere was basic and not too welcoming. I wouldn't go back... could get a better surf and turf burrito at a Mexican taco shop. #Carlos Disapproves

Yelp
Leaving san diego with the girls we were looking for some place to eat on a Sunday morning. Food was great. They had a good atmosphere, friendly service. Fast. Family friendly

Yelp
I was so excited to find out El Prieto has a new food truck in Chula Vista! It's so unique because everything is sea food! They have tostadas, tacos, burritos all packed with amazing fresh seafood! The service was good, staff was very nice. We tried: *Cayo de Acha- Botana *Cayo de Acha-tostada *Taco pescado *Shrimp Taco *Horchata- this was amazing! The best I've ever had. The new food truck is beautiful and the menu is organized. They have a whole station where you can put any sauce or salsa in bags or containers as well as other toppings. If you love sea food you really need to stop by and try everything on their menu! I loved coming here with my Aunt Teresa

Yelp
Be aware the people there are yelling, unpleasant to eat, the birria was good but not worth the disrespect that we had. The lady in the birria truck fat lady. Was so rude, she took our order and was screaming at us what else. I told her my order was half here half to go. The seafood was to go. They gave me the seafood last. I asked the guy if I could have a container to put it into. He ran to the other trailer. The lady came back with my food thrown in a container and she stated yelling at me and walked away. Who does that. I got my food and it look disgusting it was purposely thrown In the box. I didn't eat it as I thought they had tampered with it. Avoid this place

Kuri V.

Yelp
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Trust the reviews that say the women who are taking orders and passing out food are so rude and disrespectful. They literally yelled at us in front of other customers over a mistake they made. Don't waste your time. I specifically ordered tacos with everything and one separate taco without salsa. When I went back to address the error, the server took the tacos back. After waiting for about 10 minutes, I asked about my order, and she claimed I had said the tacos weren't mine. I explained they made a mistake and just needed to add salsa, onion, and cilantro. She asked for a minute and started discussing with the cashier and started implying we were trying to steal food since they saw my sister had taken part of our order to the car for my nieces. They got multiple parts of our order wrong and missed parts of it too only to then suggest we were the ones unsure of what we ordered. Even after I said it was probably a misunderstanding she still had the audacity to say "Usted no sabe ni lo que pidió" It was literally ridiculous and probably one of the worst customer experiences I've had. Very disrespectful, unorganized and unprofessional it's not worth your time and money.

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!! We got a few tacos and all were amazing!!! I'm not a big seafood lover, but I do love me some fish tacos... they were really really yummy! Also, don't sleep on the consommé ... it was so good I served myself up a second cup! Again... I'm not big on seafood and I got seconds on the consommé! Don't sleep on this food truck folks... delicious food + great people w/ great service!

Liliana B.

Yelp
Seriously one of the best places I've tried! The moment you get close you can smell the delicious food! We were greeted by the hostess and seated. We were a party of 8 on a Sunday morning. It didn't take long if anything maybe 5 min max. We got our drinks ordered and shortly after our food. Everything came out accordingly and looked and tasted amazing! I ordered a fish taco and a menudo. The cleanest menudo I've ever ordered. The broth was so clean and smelled really good. No funky smell like some places. The fish taco was perfectly seasoned and the batter was nice a crispy. It took me back to Ensenada fish tacos. I also ordered a agua de pepino which was also good and refreshing. I will definitely stop by next time I visit SD.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and decided to leave a review this time. Don't come here expecting to find a fancy restaurant with table service. It's two food trucks, one mariscos and one tacos and burritos, with a covered standing eating area in between. However, you can order from both menus at either of the trucks. Meaning, I order my Baja style fish tacos with my quesabirria tacos instead of ordering the fish tacos from the masiscos one and Birria from the other. Prices surely have gone up, I recall when it used to be 1.25 per fish taco, but that was PC. As far as the fish tacos went, they seem to be putting less fish and less cabbage on top. With that being said, it was still a solid taco. Being a Baja Style Fish Taco, the fish was battered and fried freshly and topped with tomato and cabbage. The quesataco de Birria are some of my favorites. Honestly there's nothing that special about the flavor of the meat itself but the cheese brings out the best of the taco, and then you have to top it with the spicy onions and sauces they offer. They're large bottles of white crema, chipotle crema, straight habanero salsa, and spicy red salsa reminding me of a thick salsa quemada. They offer a few prepackaged hot sauces like guacamaya as well. You can add as much sauce as you like, as well as serve yourself as much of limes, onions, and radishes as you please. There's an even serve yourself mariscos consome. If you want the Birria consome, just ask for it at the Birria food truck. Sodas are offers in glass and cans, as well as Aguas frescas. I can't see why I'd give it less than 5 stars since I've never had a bad experience and food always been good. It will get busy on weekends. FIVE STARS.

Yelp
Exceptional service, food and prices The waitresses where on point and knowledgeable explained the menu

Reynelle M.

Yelp
The food here is soooooo good!! We got fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and shrimp tostada, and their sauce compliments the tacos well. So bomb! The meats were hot and fresh so be careful not to burn your tongue. I would recommend this to everyone! Only complaint I had was the tostada chip was a bit hard and is the type to cut the roof of your moth of gums. The other truck across from there thats all meat was also good, but I liked this seafood truck better. Service was fast and nice employees! FYI this place is a food truck and they accept card, not just cash. Theres about 5 tables to eat your food at and its pretty clean. Definitely would come back!

Yelp
Security bud ti e here. Got two fish tacos. Yummy. Parking is always a bear so come early and be patient.

Yelp
Good food and service. A lot of food options (tacos, menudo, birria, tostadas, etc) Nice ambiance for a truck service.

Yelp
I took a long Sunday drive to check out these food trucks in the Chula Vista/Otay neighborhood. They are located in the parking lot of a strip of auto repair shops. At least a dozen spaces were marked off as reserved for El Prieto customers so that was nice. One truck served seafood items while the other was slinging birria and other meats. In between the two was a large canopy with about four tables underneath where customers stood to eat their food. Many folks took orders back to their vehicles and ate from there. I started with the Birrieria truck and bought a Birria taco and an El Perron taco. I wasn't sure of the components of the latter, but judging from the higher price, I suspected it was a combination of some sort. It turned out to be a mix of birria and carne asada with cilantro, onion, guacamole, and rojas sauce. The best part was the little caramelized bits of grilled meat. The corn tortillas were slighty crispy and had a generous amount of oil coated on them. The birria meat was tender, yet it could have used more seasoning. I ate both of these tacos on the spot. Afterward, I ordered two tacos to-go from the Mariscos truck. My choices were both a la plancha... pescado and camaron. The grilled fish filet was buried in a heap of shredded lettuce, tomato, cilantro, and crema sauce. The same ingredients accompanied the grilled shrimp, but at least you could see a couple of pieces on top. There seemed to be more people lined up for the seafood than the meats, however the timing could have been coincidental. The wait time and prices were both reasonable while the food quality was good.

Jazmin G.

Yelp
We went to try it today. Waited for approx 40 minutes to Be seated, there was an open table in front for about 30 minutes only for them to seat us there after two other tables opened. We finally sat down and we asked a question regarding time and seating for the lady to say "we only have one server and I won't wait tables". She then begins to wait the table and get our drinks. The nice waitress finally comes and tells us we are out of asada, chicken, pastor and carnitas. Which is mainly what they serve. We opted to leave and they comped our drinks. The concept is good. The waitress was nice and tried to offer a solution. The two ladies that I presumed are managers or host could use some customer service classes. It was busy for the waitress not them and their half ass cleaning of the tables.

Yelp
This place is a "hidden gem" in San Diego. My absolute favorite place to get tacos. Food is amazing and I recommend it to everyone.

Yelp
I recently got my order to go, I wanted to check out the new location since it's been popping up on Instagram. The location is easy to get to the new spot looks very nice. I was ordering to go and felt a little pressured to place my order, it was around 10am. There were a lot of waitresses and hostesses so right away I was attended but felt weird. I ordered a tostada de aguachiles Negro and 2 fish tacos. Got my order and went home, open getting ready to eat I noticed they didn't give me my tostadas for the aguachiles. The taste was not great either seemed pretty bland. Definitely had better ones from other locations. Fish tacos were good and well served. Hit and miss not the first time I've purchased with them and had items missing.

JIM R.

Yelp
What a find! I've lived in Chula Vista over 30 years, don't know how long this place has been here but just discovered it. Incredible place. First timer so I ordered the fish tacos. The fish tacos were Absolutely amazing, this is my new fish taco place and it offers a lot more as shown. Place is busy but very organized. I appreciate they have a parking lot attendant to help assist you find a parking spot and directs traffics in and out so no problems created. I like their choices of hot spicy salsas. They have about 7 different types to choose from, all in large squirt bottles on a bed of ice, so they are always fresh and chilled. You basically stand and eat your food at the tall tables. It's cool because you can join others at their table and strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. I like that . I can't wait to go back and try everything on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is top noche. I had both birria and fish taco. They were probably the best ive had. Service was quick and helpful when asking about the food. It was a nice atmosphere even though it is outdoors between two food trucks. This is like restaurant quality food without the restaurant. And its more like restaurant price out of a food truck, but well worth it. Good think i found this spot because the other spot a little down the road was rude. Thats how i ended up here. Ive been to the other spot a few times, but the younger cat is not as good as the owner.
google avatar

Yelp
Sweet lord, truly perfect Mexican seafood. The blue coast taco combined a smoky meat alongside brightly flavored fish wrapped in a fresh and fantastic corn tortilla. The fish tacos were best in class - a perfect version of a well worn classic. And the aguachile rojo toastada was spicy but fantastic. Absolutely stop here if you want some Mexican seafood! They have tables for you to sit at and take card.

Yelp
Some of the best fish tacos I've had, perfectly hot and crispy! We also tried another tostada dish, I forget which one but it was a mix of well seasoned seafood. It was delicious! Love that there's a seafood truck and a meat truck. There are tables in the middle for you to stand at and they also have a hot pot of soup in the middle if you want to serve yourself a cup as you wait. Highly recommend this food truck!

Vanessa P.

Yelp
Surprise my hubby for Valentine's. First , time here and won't be the last . We had the BEST SEAFOOD TACOS !

Yelp
Best seafood tacos/tostadas and birria tacos ever!!! Great service too! Give it a try, you won't regret it! I do recommend taking it to go if the weather is hot!

Yelp
Mariscos el prieto is my go to mariscos spot. Perfect for a cruda/hangover the next day! I've put at least 10 others on, and one of my friends who is from LA, literally came down and went back up for prietos as a quick trip. Whenever other friends from other cities and states visit, they always mention that they want to go here because of how much our mutual friends recommend it. The aguachile and quesadilla de camaron al chipotle are my go tos! And lastly, make sure to top everything, yes EVERYTHING, with their deliciously creamy chipotle sauce!
google avatar

Marrion M.

Yelp
Omg, this place is sooooo good. I got the pulpo cockteles, fish tacos, and shrimp tacos, and everything was so flavorful. My favorite was the octopus (pulpo).. I don't think I've had anything like it! They also give you a ton of octopus at a reasonable price. If you're planning to visit, just make sure to come before lunch rush because it does get pretty busy if you're hoping to eat at one of the tables. This is definitely my new go-to mariscos spot, I highly recommend!

Anna R.

Yelp
Food was ok Service can definitely use some improvement tables dirty area full of trash. Trash can overfilled causing Flys and not able to enjoy your food! Overall can do better. Portions were good but the way it's serve can be in bigger trays that way your food stays on the tray and not on the table. Prices are a bit high but I guess that's everywhere.

Yelp
They had a wait list. We put our name on it. We were next in line after waiting 30 mins in the sun only for the hostess to give our table to the couple behind us. When I confronted her, she gave a lame excuse and said sorry. As the wait list grew, the hostess grew frantic not knowing how to seat patrons, as a result no one was being seated including us. EXTREMELY UNORGANIZED. we chose to just leave. We not recommend this place until they organize their seating process - maybe never!!!

Yelp
El Prieto is by far my favorite seafood truck in San Diego county. Their food is absolutely delicious, so fresh, and super flavorful. Their service is great! The staff is so kind and helpful.

Yelp
First time coming and never coming again. There were hardly any clients when we arrived and we asked for a small order to go. Took 55 minutes to get our order. They lack personnel, customer service, and I was honestly unimpressed. There are definitely other delicious places to eat here in Chula Vista but because of the reasons above I won't return to el prieto.

Yelp
Sooo!!!! Disappointed!!! Ordered an Red Camerons Agua Chile. Tasted soy sauce!! Ohhh no!!! I have celiac disease and CAN not consume any wheat... products. I get deathly sick. I called the restaurant. Found out they went outside traditional recipes and they add soy sauce to their dish. $20 down the drain! Wish they would have posted some kind of allergies notice. I have ate there before with no problem. agua chiles are MY FAVORITE SEAFOOD Dish. still have my craving and im out $20.00. I'll probably break out in a rash and get sick i had 2 bites..
