A South Side favorite for Nayarit-style seafood—think pescado zarandeado, garlic crab, and aguachiles. Celebrated over the years by Chicago Reader and trusted by generations of mariscos fans.

The platter depicted in the photograph was priced at $250. While the menu indicates that the price is “market price,” I find it excessive. However, the staff was exceptionally lively, helpful, and friendly. They extended a heartfelt happy birthday to my husband and contributed to a pleasant ambiance. It is important to note that this establishment operates on a BYOB basis and offers a limited selection of mixers and chasers.

Camarones a la diabla. The worst Just open the freeze shrimps from the bag with sauce and serve it. Honesty is not fear for the price. horribles extra over cooked.

Google
DO NOT COME HERE I REPEAT DO NOT COME HERE. THEY WILL SCAM YOU. They advertised pickled scallops priced at 30$ a plate ( reasonable) but the thing is they tried to serve me TALAPIA AND NOT SCALLOP. I asked the waiter why did they serve me fish and not scallops. Then he told me they don't have scallops they only have fish. I told his it's false advertisement then he proceeds to get his manager. His manager should have been more honest. Instead he lies to my face and tells me they cut the scallops differently. Clearly it was fish. Point of the story do not come here with the expectation to leave happy I came to this place for 10 years and I lost all respect for this place

This place is a must visit if you like seafood! The service is swift and attentive, and the portions are huge. The food was delicious and flavorful.

Mariscos El Veneno is a hidden gem for seafood lovers. I ordered the camarones a la diabla ($18.99) and a ceviche tostada ($3.50). The shrimp were perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, and the ceviche was fresh and zesty. The BYOB policy is a nice touch, and the live music added to the lively atmosphere. Service was friendly and attentive, making for an enjoyable dining experience.

Checked out Mariscos El Veneno in West Lawn—spent around $30 on camaron sarandeados, spicy crab, and BYOB michelada setup. Seafood flavors were solid and portions were hearty. Cozy spot with ocean-blue walls and live music—got a bit loud, but adds to the vibe. Staff brought a complimentary ceviche tostada, which was a nice touch. Overall a fun night, would totally go back.

Superb Delicious not expensive. I eaten a lot of Nayarit seafood style but this place stands out. Solid big portions incredible flavor and perfect size prawns garlic. Place is clean, big, well safety and excellent social distances. I really felt safety to eat there.

Yelp
This is a great place. I love coming to this place. I started coming here when they first opened up. I want to say maybe 20 years or closer to 20 years. The food there is phenomenal the the seven sea soup Chapuzo I don't think I spelled it right but it's a great dish combination of shrimp, raw oysters, some chipotle, chili, and some garlic bread to go with it Mexican garlic bread

Yelp
Good food, not much else to say ‍, one of the original Mexican seafood places in Chicago!

Yelp
I got the camarones zarandeados and they were incredible. If I just had this, I would have given a 5. But my boyfriend's cocktail de camaron was underwhelming, we've had better elsewhere. But they give you free ceviche tostadas as an appetizer and they were incredible. The servers are very friendly and prompt. The other reason I am giving a 5 is because they have live entertainment (singing and/or guitar players), that is really loud. Also they come around asking for money and tips which I was not a fan of. So most of the food is incredible, but I'll probably carry out next time.

Yelp
Great food! Service was alright, not the best. And ambience, clean and comfortable

Yelp
BYOB place. Best seafood we have ever had. The portion was great. We order 3 plates for 4 people and it was just enough for us

Yelp
Came here thanks to a recommendation from someone in San Jose California. Any time you eat marisco's you have the chance of getting sick when it is old or not prepared properly. Scary I know. Well luckily everything came out perfect. Street parking is available. Loud live music was being played the Saturday I arrived. Servers were prompt and got the food out quickly. They gave free complimentary fish toastada. They do not serve alcoholic drinks here, but the food makes up for it. Aguachile - spicy as heck Mixta toastada - $9 good. Heavy on the soy sauce Battered Fried shrimp plate - lots of rice, veggies, fries, and a decent amount of shrimps Bacon wrapped shrimp plate - another hefty plate. Sangria special - $12 expensive but hits the spot. Expensive because it's non alcoholic. I would so come back next time I am in Chicago. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food they serve you.

Yelp
Amazing seafood! Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Cozy atmosphere and attentive staff. Highly recommend!

Yelp
If I can give them 0 stars i will, I went in to dine in with my wife because it was the only seafood restaurant open late. Biggest mistake ever I got charged twice for that meal and I've tried multiple times to work with them on resolving this issue, after many times of going in to try to talk to management (no manager was ever in the establishment when I would go in) to get my money back for the transaction that I was charged double for 80$! Employees even admitting that they had a glitch around the time of my visit. But still not able to refund me my money, which I was technically robbed for. I finally got the owners number and was able to speak to her but after months of her just "looking into it" even promised me to resolve by the end of day, never heard back from her. DO NOT VISIT THIS RESTAURANT, UNLESS YOU WANT TO PAY DOUBLE FOR YOU'RE MEAL!!!!!

Yelp
Well honestly i was trying not to expect too much. As seafood often disappoints. This time i can say i was wrong, wrong on the quality and wrong about taste. This is seriously a great establishment for seafood but just one drawback, its too much food! So my mom loves seafood soup but often times it is way too spicey. As usual we ask, "is it spicey?" And usually the waiters say "not too much", and that's usually the lie of a lifetime and mom never gets to enjoy even a few bites of the soup. This time she totally loved it and she said it was the first soup in a long time were it wasn't spicey, and that makes me happy. I order the seafood cocktail, similar to the shrimp cocktail but loaded their way. I mean you can't get fresher ingredients if you fished for the seafood yourself. I was pleased, and you all know this reviewer will keep it 100 and tell you if i loved it or not. I absolutley loved it and the fact that its B.Y.O.B. makes it even more special, come on now. I have to also give special props to the staff. I am absolutley in love on how they were trained to greet and just be sweet with all clients. That says a lot foe the Management, when you have staff that are just beautiful souls and actually care that you are comfortable. This to me (besides the food) will bring me back. Just a pleasure to have Sunday lunch with my mama.

Yelp
I recently visited "El Veneno" in Pulaski, and the service was great i received my order on time but the food was not too good. I ordered my lobster tail & cream to go, and when I opened the bag everything smelled great I was eating some of the sides and everything was great. I then proceeded to eat the lobster, when I took my first bite I noticed an extremely strong chemical-like scent and an overwhelming chemical taste. I spat out the disgusting lobster out of my mouth, I then noticed that the entire lobster smelled. I am utterly disgusted by the quality of the food, please be mindful of your future customers. You have lost yourself a customer.

Juanita V.

Yelp
Terrible no price on their menu "market price" they say we ended up with a $570 bill for a supreme tray and two other dishes they no longer have the seasoned fries I remembered. Really boring atmosphere definitely would not recommend and most definitely I will not be returning

Alondra R.

Yelp
very bad service. we arrived at 11am mind you they open at 10am but it was closed. the employees just started at us from inside we called from outside and they said they were open. when I said we were outside they hung up!! this place is a joke!!

Yelp
Excellent FOOD & Excellent Service!!! One of my favorite seafood restaurants. Totally Recommend it!

Erica B.

Yelp
Went here after flying into midway, wanted to take off the stress from airports with a margarita and michelada. Turns out this place does not sell alcohol. Didn't see any signs anywhere disclosing this. The waiter was rude about it too explaining if we want to drink alcohol you have to bring your own. Also, not kid friendly they don't have a kids menu. Once again the waiter looked at me like I was crazy for asking what they offer for kids lol. Um ok I guess they can watch me eat . Anyways, ordered el chapuzón, it was good lacked a little in flavor. Their complimentary ceviche tostada was really good though.

Yelp
If you love seafood then please go to Marisco's El Veneno! The dishes are so scrumptious that I'm legitimately confused as to why the rating isn't at least 4.5 stars. When you're seated you get a delicious serving of tostada shells, ceviche, hot (and I mean HOT) salsa, and lime slices. The menu is well presented with pictures of every dish, helping those of us that cannot understand the written description in Spanish. I ordered a spicy shrimp dish (I don't know the name because I don't speak Spanish) and it was SO filling. The shrimp were covered in a hot, yet sweet, sauce, with rice, garlic bread, salad, and fries. The garlic bread was beyond fluffy, and the fries were well seasoned and crisp to my liking. I also had some of the spicy crab legs and the serving size was ginormous. To top things off, the restaurant is BYOB. When you go to El Veneno you're definitely in for an authentic Mexican restaurant experience. The food is delicious and the mariachi band is so lively-- if you're ever in the mood for fresh seafood definitely stop by!

Yelp
It's a Latin seafood extravaganza with a byob kicker. They start you out with a seafood tostada and chips. Then you roll into the the main event. We did langostines, shrimp and fried whole fish, all of which were excellent with delicious sauces and fresh flavors. My advice, skip the $5 bowl of white rice. We finished up full and with leftovers for $115 for four people. A little more than I expected but it was delicious.

Yelp
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
I visit this place whenever I come see my brother . I always order the langostinos , so delicious & all the sides that come with it are equally as good !! If you ever get this dish you won't order anything else lol
google avatar

Lacretia N.

Yelp
A great seafood place with lots of Pizazz and friendliness... I had a ball with my best Girlie we ate well...

Dr. M.

Yelp
Sadly, I came back for their delicious crab legs only to find out that they increased the price to $75 and advertised this as market rate! Obviously they must not be aware of care that others are pricing the same item at market rate much lower and offering more. Well...it was good while it lasted, but I'm not paying for price gouging!
google avatar

Reggie S.

Yelp
The spicy crab legs are delicious. They have increased there prices but the food is still worth it. If you went to a more upscale restaurant you would pay considerably more and not get as many crab legs. The BYOB option is a plus!
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
My favorite seafood spot in da Chi! Never lets me down, always good service and its BYOB! If not bringing a drink, consider the fresh squeezed limeade for $5 served in a huge chalice. I recently discovered its less crowded for lunch so we decided to bring my mother-in-law for sunday lunch and she loved it. We didnt have to wait for a table and the food was delicious as always. She will definitely be back she says, as I did after my first visit.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
My worst experience here so far. Food was bland no flavor of any kind. Came with the family and friends. They all said the same thing BLAND. Six dishes all of them tasted like thawed frozen seafood. Very disappointing
google avatar

Sheila B.

Yelp
El Veneno gets 5 stars for the crawfish. Super good. 5 stars for featuring free BYOB (w/ ice bucket) and a free ceviche tostada. This was my first time ever going to El Veneno, and my friend insisted we went to this Pulaski location because the Crawfish are larger than what's usually served at the Augusta and Ashland location. Since then, two other people have shared that same sentiment with me. So it sounds like there is truth to that. All I know is that the crawfish were beyond delicious. Yo, it was so good that I was accidentally eating antennas. That sauce was everything. 2 stars on their prices. In my opinion, $100 for the jumbo crawfish plate was too high. With that said, I will definitely be back. But not as often as I'd like to.
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
Omg what else can I say other than so YUM. My mojarra frita was so juicy I've eaten alot of fishes from Mexico and this is the first mariscos I can say have the best mojarras in the city!
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
It's been poopapaloosa since we were there Saturday. We hall had the spicy shrimp dish & ceviche. Only one who didn't isn't sick
google avatar

Edwin H.

Yelp
Workers that take the orders can not get more incompetent. Not only that they make it seem like the problem is you. We have been coming here for years. It seems that it's getting worse and worse I understand that you're busy but that doesn't mean you treat your clients like crap. My mother ordered the biggest ceviche and they decided to give her the large which is the size under and yes they charged us for the correct item but it's not the item we wanted. Then the worker had the audacity to disrespect my mother and make it seem like it was her fault. It's sad to see customer service deteriorating. I show the utmost respect for customer service workers. I atleast expect the same in return. Unfortunately this terrible experience is enough to get me to stop coming. If you're thinking about trying this place there are plenty of places that are cheaper and will give you respect. For the price you're paying the least you can get is some respect and the right order.

Clarissa M.

Yelp
They did not let me in with my service dog today. The owner was also rude about it. They should also be informed to not ask questions. It's by the law.
google avatar

Murf V.

Yelp
Loyal client for many years! 10 years for sure! I can't break up with El Veneno. The best camarones cucarachas and langostinos in the Chicagoland area for sure!

Monica F.

Yelp
Very good service, very good sea food.. you can smell it from a block away. I had the Salmon and it was grilled to perfection. Also ordered the Langostinos were so big and juicy. There ceviche they give as an appetizer was very good as well had a lemon-cucumber taste. Also had a Sangria perparada and it was b.o.m.b... two thumbs way up!!!!
google avatar

MARIA O.

Yelp
How could this place only have 1 review?? I get it, the other location is probably more popular, I mean, it was the original location and is only 3 blocks away, but this location is just as good. And less noisy. To get you started, you are served a complimentary glass of water and a tostada de ceviche. (awesome!) The restaurant is BYOB. (double awesome!) My favorite dish is the camarones diablos, or something like that. (Triple awesome!) It's peeled shrimp in a thick, spicy red sauce (awesome x4) served with fries and rice and garlic bread. (garlic bread- YUM! Awesome x 5!) And that explains the 5 star review.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
My all time favorite restaurant! I love, love, love this place. If you love Mexican seafood, this is the place to go. The food is delicious, the portions are huge, the prices are reasonable, and its BYOB. Bring a 6-pack of Pacificos and order some langostinos! Plus, they give you a tostada to start. they'll prepare micheladas there for you, you bring the beer. For those who don't drink alcohol, they have really good limeades, too. Yummm...my mouth is watering thinking about this spot.

Yelp
Camarones a la Diabla!!! My favorite place to order my favorite dish!!! 1st visit ever was not the best experience but decided to give them another chance. I'm glad I did, these last few times waiters have been amazing!!.
google avatar

Christine Z.

Yelp
Yummy great food, If you are in the mood for seafood with tasty garlic bread and arroz blanco this is your place. BYOB which can be fun and refreshing. Food is very tasty from the fresh ceviche toastada they give to tease your tongue of whats to come , to the delicious savory dishes, fried shrimp to fresh crab legs and mouth watering seafood cocktails etc,. On a weekend be prepared to after 1:00pm to wait in line especially during lent. Enjoy

Jamie D.

Yelp
I first want to say that the food was very good and the portions were larger than almost any restaurant you will usually visit. My wife's family has been coming here for many years, but our first visit was this Saturday afternoon. And how can I forget, BYOB!!! Be sure which location you are wanting to visit before you park. The restaurant has two locations within a block and a half of each other on the same street. Parking is a little difficult, and we arrived around noon on the weekend. I'm sure it would be a lot harder at night on a weekday or really bad on a weekend night. The restaurant was almost full but our waitress was with us quickly. She was not friendly by any means, but performed her job satisfactory. The food was quick to arrive. The complimentary ceviche tostada was awesome. Who even gives each guest free food anymore??? Each dinner had fries, rice, a small salad, and a piece of garlic bread included. I'm a large fella with a big appetite and left with a full belly. We ordered too much to list here, but everyone liked or loved what they ordered. I will definitely be returning in the near future. It's 45 minutes away from our house. If it was local to us I'd be here on the regular. Check it out!
google avatar

Saul T.

Yelp
Best seafood in town. Been to multiple locations but this tops it all. I am never disapointed with their service, and quality of food. The dish I order most frequently are the camarones a la diabla, and they never fail to impress.
google avatar

Jenny M.

Yelp
Food was Delicious but that service was ahh let's say not the best. There micheladas were delicious!!!
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Best crab legs with amazing spicy sauce! Everything is always good here the loaded oysters are amazing as well! Never had anything but great experience here, plus it's byob
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
Great place to hang out with friends. Their specialty is Langostinos Nayarit style. They are big prawns butterflied in shell and sautéed in their special buttery spicy sauce. A bonus is its BYOB, they have a limit of three beers per person. The only drawback is they have live music and they are super LOUD, it's very hard to have a conversation.
google avatar

Dolly K.

Yelp
Raw oyster, Garlic oysters great. Oysters Rellano? I'm not sure how this is Nayarit style, plenty of uncleaned shrimp, octopus, not cool with the surimi imitation crab, not cool with the restaurant depot mozzarella loaded on top and really no flavor. The white mushrooms stuffed inside, threw off the theme. The salsa is really yummy venom, don't mess with it unless you like it hot, but the tostadas are STALE. Byob and tortilla chips too. The ceviche they greet you with is phenomenal, the best around but again, how are you a Mexican restaurant and mess up your tostadas? Service was friendly, clean place. Fun, mariachis great. Not truly pacific authentic but awesome.
google avatar

Sandra C. B.

Yelp
The. Crab legs are awesome. And the fish mix on the hard shell ( tastada?)? Is delicious .
google avatar

Diane K.

Yelp
The food was AMAZING, had oysters on half shell yummy, our server Chuey was great, he recommended Lagostinos just absolutely delicious. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
Wow, it's very delicious seafood. I didn't know that not have drinking. Must bring BYOB! it's my first time, I went to be there.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
Very good. First time coming here and service was good and food was very tasty. Everything was server in a timely manner. It is byob so if you want alcoholic drinks bring your own.

V D.

Yelp
Great service and delicious food! Best of all BYOB! I've never been disappointed with anything I've tried on the menu but my favorite are the Langostinos!

Ranree J.

Yelp
Yep, good food, had the crab legs, you have to ask for them because they're not on the menu. Had the dozen oysters, but for the price I expected them to be mediocre at best, and they were just that, mediorce... they could have done a better job of cleaning them too. We went on a Saturday, arrived around 7:30 and waited about 30 minutes for our table for 6? No parking, street parking can be a challenge. Prices were decent
google avatar

Alejandra P.

Yelp
Even though my husband and I live in San Francisco, CA this restaurant is one of the main reasons we love visiting family in Chicago, we always go into VENERO at least 2 times in our stay. This restaurant has excellent taste in preparation. We also love the fact that you could bring your own beer, if you like to drink beer an just chill and eat seafood this place is the place to be. My husband and I hate to always have to leave because for months we dream of tasting VENENO one more time.

Yolanda F.

Yelp
First time and I actually really liked the food I got filete relleno witch has the filete crab octopus shrimp and the cheese melted on top honestly it was so good the rice too I will recommend this place definitely.
