These Upstart Organizers Are Changing the Future of Night Markets in LA - Eater LA

"In 2000, the Los Angeles Times Mapping LA project recorded that Latinos made up 56.2 percent of the neighborhood's population in its 1.48 square miles, making it one of the highest population densities in the city. The rapid property development since then has become a growing concern for Maldonado's family and neighbors, many of whom have been in the area for several generations. The year 2020 was especially difficult for her mother, who has been the owner of Mariscos Marias for over 20 years and who saw a steep increase in rent while business slowed due to the pandemic. Since then, the family has been able to stay open with a return to the usual customer base that it has served." - Lisa Kwon

This place was so good! Staff was friendly and the cups of Horchata were HUGE. I got Mole and Ceviche, I would love to come back, too bad I live in Chicago lol. This place was super amazing! I HIGHLY recommend coming here if you are in the area.

Google
Great spot for after lunch pre dinner!! The patio is nice and loud with good Spanish music. The shrimp tostada is amazing.. I can’t believe my bill for a margarita and tostada was $17!!! Maria was so attentive and nice.

Google

It was absolutely delicious. The michelada are the best. I have nothing bad to say, it was so good.

My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for multiple years and this is easily the WORST experience we’ve ever had. Everything from the food to the service was horrible. Walking in, the waitress(Ruth) didn’t greet us and took forever to take our order. We ordered the calamari as appetizers and they were burned and overcooked, when we said something about it, the waitress tried to gaslight us into thinking that was normal. She also said “The table behind you was served the same thing and they’re eating it,” as if that were to make anything better. We were never offered any compensation and instead kept coming back to make snarky remarks, we even attempted to ask for the manager and we were just ignored. The plating and flavor of the food was awful and can definitely say we won’t be coming back. It was unbelievable to pay 85 dollars for something that wasn’t even worth our time.

Yelp
They have good mariscos, drinks and Mexican food. The service was also good, they were fast and attentive. They checked in a couple times if we were doing okay. The ambiance is lively, they have indoor and outdoor seating available with TVs all around. They also have daily deal specials, different for every day of the week and the prices were reasonable. We enjoyed everything we tried. The mango margarita was so flavorful and a good portion for the price. We had the shrimp ceviche, carne asada plate, grilled salmon plate with garlic plate (you can customize and request how you want your fish cooked), the mojarra frita was a good size and it was delicious too. It was their special on Mondays and it only came out to $9.

Yelp
A great neighboorhood mexican food place.Traditional mexican plates, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, salad and loads of fish dishes

Yelp
I called four times tonight and asked to speak to the manager. The lady who answered the phone said that there is no manager. I asked to speak to the owner. She kept hanging up. I live in Pennsylvania and notice that somebody tried to use my bank card at one their restaurants, I explained this to the lady, and she still said that they have no manger there. I requested to speak to who was in charge. She kept hanging up on me. First to keep hanging up after explaining that somebody tried to use my bank card, sends a red flag and makes me wonder why they did not want to talk to me about this.

Yelp
The food was good the service was good the indoor space could use a remodel but overall I'd recommend this place and glad I finally tried. I now have a marisco spot close to home.

Yelp
Delicious food, a must checking into if you're in the area. I had the bacon wrapped shrimp, so good!

Yelp
I came to this restaurant because I saw them in my instagram feed. So for 5 de Mayo I too my family to give this place a chance especially since it's in my neighborhood. But I must say service was horrendous. As soon as we walked in we were never greeted although two young ladies including Tatiana saw us standing there by the entrance but said absolutely nothing. Not a welcome, for how many, let me get your name NOTHING. We waited for 20 mins standing there. I had to approach the waitress and she seemed bothers. She gave us a table. We waited to order out our drinks 15 mins after no drinks no waitress. Luckily we were helped by two young men that I am sure saw the need to help out with the tables. Because of them we got our drinks. We he then took our order and we waited for another 20 mins this was insane. We had to get the bill without our food and we decided to leave. The two young ladies need customer service training. I will not come back. This was a waste of time.

Yelp
I've lived in the neighborhood since 2019 and really wanted to like this place. It has a chill laidback, locals only vibe. I ordered a shrimp aguachile (I think that's what it was but can't find the menu to reference) from the appetizer section and even pointed to it. I was served a rather large portion of the dish. It was super spicy and just lacked flavor. And I just didn't like the extreme rawness of the shrimp, which I am aware is the style of this dish and a personal preference. When the bill came, I noticed we had been charged a price higher than what I saw on the menu. Turns out I had been served the entree portion. The server was super annoyed with us and actually even scolded me. I was pretty shocked and feel like I have some pretty thick skin. But it just caught me off guard. Although we said we'd pay the entree price, she changed it to the appetizer price. Safe to say it's not likely we'll come back.

Yelp
Cozy little spot. Family own restaurant that serves fresh food. The food comes out quick and service was friendly.

Yelp
Very terrible service I will never go back there , it took 30 minutes to get some water so NO DONT GO THERE !

Karina R.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place since I happened to be in the area. I was extremely disappointed in the service and food quality. It was hard to know where to order since nobody will greet you or tell you to give them a minute to take your order, they just stare around. As I'm waiting to order there is a man frustrated saying he's been waiting at a table without anyone taking his order. After asking a waitress I witness him being told to order at the window and when he tries to do so they tell him he has to wait for a waitress. It just seemed to me like there was no system for welcoming guests or serving tables. It took more than 30 mins to prepare my order containing 3 asada tacos and 2 fish tacos to go. I take the food because I'm hungry and nowhere near home and find the fish tacos are burnt. The batter to fish ratio was overwhelming, very little fish, tiny smear of sauce over the tacos, cold tortillas and burnt! I didn't get a picture of the asada tacos but it did not look like good meat, somehow the asada looked like tiny little meatballs instead. I thought you could never go bad with some basic tacos de asada but I was wrong! They gave us a lot of tortilla chips on the side but probably just to get rid of them because they were stale. Also gave us lemons on the side and they were already moldy, couldn't even bother to check before placing in the bag. Overall outdated restaurant, horrible service, and terrible food. Wish I could give it negative stars.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and every time we have a really great experience. The menu is huge so I suggest ordering a mojara (the deep fried tilapia) mojo de ajo (a garlic sauce) or a molcajete (sizzling meat in the volcanic rock) Service is very attentive as well. Nice hole in the wall place!!

Yelp
We commute 25 miles from the SFV to Maria's and in LA traffic specially the 405 that's a mission but the Mariscos here are well worth it! Michoacana and proud! I grew up eating mariscos in Playa Azul and this hut set up and delicious seafood takes me back to easier and better times. Mojarra Frita- Perfection!! Served with rice and beans , side salad and I of course added French fries cuz u can't have mojarra frita without papas! Rice + Beans - Mexican stamp of approval ! Aguachiles- spicy spicy spicy with huge fresh shrimp, fresh cucumber and yummy avocado. Camarones a la plancha - just order these ! Great customer service, hard people giving it their all and it shows in their food and great attitude.

Diego A.

Yelp
Very disappointing I have been going here for YEARS and this has been the worse experience ever. The waiter had very bad attitude especially when they served the calamari's it was burnt and we bad told the waiter and they said " the people behind you are eating them". My mom was still eating and they took her plate without asking if she had finished and the presentation is very bad we had thought it would look the same as in photos but it didn't very disappointing .

Yelp
the michiladas are unlike any other they're thick spicy and delicious! everything was seasoned, salted, limed to perfection.
google avatar

Erica D.

Yelp
Tasty food. We ordered micheladas, tostada de ceviche, oysters, and agua chiles. Michelada cost $10 each. Tajin rim with a spicy mix. Tostada had the perfect serving on ceviche. Oysters were smaller than usual but still delightful. Agua chiles were okay. A handful of shrimp for $20 felt overpriced.
google avatar

Fernando E.

Yelp
Good food for a great price. I've had many dishes here, but their molcajete mixto is my favorite. If you're going to have a beer, definitely get a Michelada. I also love the fact that I can play my music on their local system & listen to my rancheras. Overall, it's a great place!

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing service! Always great vibes! Highly recommend also checking out the store/monthly events next door at Persona.

Florentino P.

Yelp
The food was bomb and the service was even better. We had a variety of seafood dishes which was amazing, followed by the best hospitality I've ever seen. It's a great local spot where they keep the drinks flowing. Good vibes

Yelp
7mares soup is the best thing EVER! I COULD EAT IT EVERYDAY the place is perfect for authentic Mexican seafood!

Bianca D.

Yelp
The food was amazing and so was the service, definitely come here if you want to eat good ‍ went on a monday, if you come on the weekend plan ahead because it can get busy because everyone knows what's up

Yelp
Oh wow. I found this place by accident; honestly, just driving past and couldn't find a place I wanted to stop at, saw the sign, did a u-turn and parked and in I went. The waitress was friendly and attentive, the polla con plancha (grilled chicken and french fries) was honestly superb. Inexpensive, huge portion, and delicious. I just wish I found this place before i started my diet. Seriously good Mexican food, reasonably priced, and friendly waitress. 10/10 in my book.

Yelp
Best place for mariscos in mid city area . Great service . Great food. I highly recommend them

Yelp
Last visit here about a month ago is what brought me back today. The ingredients in the "Campechana" seafood mixed cocktail were fresh, generous and delicious. The govenador taco was epic! And the price was great. However today I again ordered the campechana and I noticed a strange smell coming from the shrimp when I got ready to eat. They were old and smelly! All the ingredients looked bad and scary to eat. I sent it back to avoid food poisoning. I'm 48 and I've gone down that road before. Not my first Mexican rodeo! I ordered the asada sope instead. It was lackluster at best. Half the meat was nerves and scrap pieces. The shell of the sope was old and leather like. I forced it down since I was starving. I gave 3 stars to balance out the last visit.

Yelp
I was at Maria's for the first time on Sunday. It was a disaster. First, off there is no system in who came first. Secondly, we waited for a tostada de ceviche de camaron for 30 minutes. Wow!! And there was a soccer game on TV and all the customers were inside with no mask. Can you say Corona virus party at its best. The inside of the restaurant was full to it's capacity and customers that ordered take-out were going inside the restaurant to wait for their order. Wow. There needs to be a system in place for take-out orders. The customers next to us they were served after us and arrived before us. The only thing compt was their cup of coffee. Seriously. Wow. And when I received my bill and I paid with a credit card there's a $.50 cent charge for using your credit card. The service sucked and trust me I won't be coming to this restaurant again.

Yelp
Ive been waiting to try this place for so long! Finally went and it was closed at 9:40 although Yelp says it's open till 11pm
google avatar

Yesenia E.

Yelp
Great customer service. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The food was responsibly prices and the foot was delicious. Not the best seafood I've tried but it's the only one in the area. I gave it four stars because there's very few seafood places in area and for being the only one it was good. Awesome staff tho!!!
google avatar

Monica T.

Yelp
Just discovered this delicious seafood place! Amazing Mexican dishes. Joanna, our wonderful server, was very attentive and took great care of us. We ordered 7 mares soup, mojarras and a mixed tostada. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Came here on a Friday afternoon with the fam. Really cute beach hut vibe w/ tropical decor. Chips and salsa were alright, I've tasted better. Ordered aguachiles, ceviche de camaron, oysters and quesadillas w/ beans and rice. Aquachiles are sooo good and very spicy! Oysters were suprisingly good. The ceviche didn't taste fresh but good seasoning and sadly tostadas were stale. Ignored the beans and rice cuz it didnt taste good but asada quesadillas were delicious.

Yelp
Pretty bomb food two years ago and it seems like after the pandemic hit everything just went downhill, food and service were pretty bad. It's sad because this used to be my to go spot for seafood. Not anymore.
google avatar

Angie M.

Yelp
I love supporting local restaurants and this one is awesome. I went during lunch time and it was pretty busy. There was only one waitress that I saw but she was fast and efficient. The shrimp taco was delicious but my favorite was the shrimp tostada. The campechana was good but didn't have enough shrimps and the flavor was ok. I'm not sure how the rest of the menu is but I will definitely be back. I want to try their other foods bc it looks delicious. I really like that they have a kids menu which makes it easier to eat with the family. The decoré is typical of a Mexican seafood restaurant, but cute.

Ruby C.

Yelp
Service is good. Food is good as well especially their aguachiles and ceviche. The molcajetes are beyond good as well. Definitely my to go spot.

James C.

Yelp
The outside appearance is deceiving but there is lots of room inside, the patio and outback. Went with family to watch the Mexico vs Argentina game and the atmosphere was great. The ceviche was very good and the staff was nice. The waitress were quite busy and could use some additional help for the size of the crowd, but did their best. All in all a wonderful experience and I highly recommend.

Yelp
Musica chingona, bomb ass food , great food all around the best Mariscos joint I have been to If I could give them 10 stars I would! Food was to good I didn't even stop to take a picture haha. Here's what was left.

Estacy C.

Yelp
Me and my friends came out of town from Salt Lake City Utah and had the best sea food experience love the service and the vibes is unreal love it! Really recommend
google avatar

Iman B.

Yelp
Be prepared to ask your waitress for the same thing over and over! First they forgot the high chair, they seen us sitting there just holding the baby. Then they forgot our drinks TWICE. And the worst she forgot my sons food, we asked for the food and she said the cook forgot to make it, then came back and said what did we order for him...so who forgot to even put in the order? Mind you there was only 1 other customer there. Food was ok. Grilled chicken was good and carne asada fries were yummy! Burritos were terrible, dry and nothing special. Guacamole was the best thing they served.
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
Love this place! !! Great food and Great atmosphere! ! Beast seafood and nachos in town !!! I love the micheladas ;) Great prices and service too As a personal chef I really appreciate getting good food when I'm not cooking, Thanks Maria Highly recommend! !!!

Yelp
Ok so stopped by this place months ago....I need to go back! Now not everyone will feel comfortable with the set up here but its perfectly fine with me because the food is amazing. So first when you walk in you see a tiny maybe 4 x5 feet area that you think where am I going to eat? Well, the seating area is in a back "yard" with a tarp over head and tables and chairs. In other words its an open eating area almost. The food though is amazing. We ordered the fish tostada, some langostinos, and a shrimp dish that I don't remember the name. Either way, the bottom line is the food is that good here. Comes out fresh and very well prepared. The staff is also very helpful here, they get busy, no surprisingly, but over all its a really good seafood place. Ive been to other restaurants with a better set up but the food isn't as good. I will trade the set up over the food tasting anytime.
google avatar

Yelp
Good place for reasonably priced Mariscos on the west side. Contrary to other reviews the chips were crispy and warm while the salsa was not bad. The aguachile verde (raw shrimp, cooked in lime and jalapeño juice) was delicious but use caution if you can't take spicy. The ceviche tostada was pretty good and they have a wide variety of other tostada options. Nice selection of Mexican beers and micheladas. Service was good and would recommend this spot for your seafood fix.
google avatar

Joshua B.

Yelp
I never am one to leave negative reviews but this place certainly deserves one. To start off, my buddies & I waited over an hour to get seated and any attention from the waitresses. Secondly, after we got seated, they took FOREVEERRRRR to take our order, we got there at 6 didn't leave till 9:30. Everyone else in the restaurant was receiving the same experience. And to top it all off, I got food poisoning. Do not recommended this spot
google avatar

Toni R.

Yelp
It's a little hole in the wall and wouldn't be able to spot it from the street. It's small inside and seating a bit crowded but we went at 5 and it was dinner time for most it wasn't to crowded and they do offer seating outside. The food was great and the michelada let me tell you are amazing probably one of the best I ever had. Definitely worth it. I am not local I was just passing through but I am glad I did.

Yesy R.

Yelp
Great sea food in la always the best in town I highly will racing this place for a quick bite
google avatar

Monica F.

Yelp
Okay, let's get this straight: the more lemony the seafood is the better. This applies to ceviche, cocktails, and especially micheladas. It's a warm sunny day, and this place is great for outdoor seating and a chilled Michelada. I think the place is a hole on the wall mariscos place. But I'm saying it as a compliment. Whenever I come, whatever I order everything is delicious! I had the fish tostada de ceviche and the shrimp version. They are never stingy with the portions served. I think this is the best place closest to the Westside.

Eric M.

Yelp
Came here with my roommate cause the photos looked good, we started off with two Micheladas which were delicious. My friend got up to go to the restroom while he was in there I order the Coctel especial and boy was it bad the shrimp tasted funny the broth had no flavor and as soon as I took the bite of the oyster I almost threw up literally spit the food out in a napkin. My friend order a dozen of them and we cancelled the order and asked for the check right away. I had them t pick up my Coctel and order another michelada to wash down the horrible taste. I told the waitress there's something wrong with the Coctel she only apologized, they should've not charged me for the Coctel since I didn't eat it but they still charged me. should've read the reviews before coming here will recommend if your looking for a michelada but be careful with the raw oysters eating bad oysters can literally kill you.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and every time it's been great. the service is friendly, the food delicious, and the beer is cheap. My favorites so far are the Tostada de Jaiba y Camaron and the fried shrimp tacos with potato. This place is a must. enjoy!
google avatar

Nathan D.

Yelp
One of the best micheladas I've had in awhile... it's not a lazy tomato sauce and beer like most places...

Andrew S.

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience here. The food was delicious, the service was good and friendly. The entire vibe of this place is super great and very authentic. I highlight recommend. A total hidden gem.
google avatar

Jackson L.

Yelp
Camaron Cocktail (4/5) It's not bad. The shrimp tastes like stock shrimp that just got thrown into the mix. The cocktail failed to impart much flavor into it. Sea Salt Fish Grill has one of the BEST preparations I've had of this. Ever tasted something, and thought " Wow... This is really good", but your hand was WAY ahead of, and by the time you finish thinking, another chip filled with cocktail goodness was, right before your mouth? Yeah... It was like that at Sea Salt Fish Grill, but not like that here. Still, the cocktail wasn't bad. Ceviche (4/5) This will definitely satisfy any type of Ceviche cravings you have, but I've had better. This is pretty much your standard preparation of ceviche, fish, shrimp, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and so on... Brown Bag Sandwiches used to have a Mexican chef who LOVED ceviche, and his passion really shined through in the ceviche he prepared. Unfortunately, the place is closed down now since the landlord wouldn't allow him to renew his lease.

Brenda V.

Yelp
Customer service was ok, there was only one waitress and so we didn't get certain things or we had to get up to ask and get the stuff . I didn't mind ! But the food, and the place was bad ! First the floors were extremely dirty, you can see the layers of grease as if they haven't cleaned it in weeks. The bar /counter area was dusty , and there was a bunch of flies outside , so we went inside , there was a few. I didn't notice the dirt until after ordering my food that I started observing the place. Food comes out , shrimp cocktail looked like the pico de Gallo was blended and it had no taste. I ordered the seafood molcajete, same no taste and the imitation crab, shrimp and octopus looked like it was microwaved. Pretty disappointed!
