Market Hall Foods is the cornerstone of Rockridge Market Hall.
With a range of offerings from fresh (made-to-order! as well as pre-portioned) pastas to hot and cool gourmet deli foods and accoutrements to local and fancy ice creams, this place has just about everything you'd want in a gourmet food store.
Have a particular palate about something? Are you expertly discerning about olive oil, mustards, balsamic vinegar, etc. Yes, they will have 15 different varieties to offer. I'm not exaggerating. Be careful though; this place can get expensive quickly. OK, it is pricey to begin with, but you're paying for convenience, location, quality, and ambiance. That said, if you're just looking for any old balsamic vinegar, check which one you're buying. You'll may want the $10 one, and not the $200 one.
Downsides to being so awesome are that they can be busy and (pre-COVID) quite crowded. Prepping for a holiday celebration? You definitely want to get a jump on the crowd.
If you're ordering from the deli and want to avoid the plastic containers, just ask them to use a paper container. Pro tip, if you want to further avoid waste and don't want a separate container for each thing (maybe to make it easier to carry, or if you're ordering a meal for yourself and everything is compatible), ask to put it all in one container and have the person helping you "tare" the box between items.
Do you like cheese? No, seriously, do you like cheese?
This place puts other cheese shops to blame. They have a tremendous variety from sheep, goat, and cow (and blends) and the people who work the cheese counter are incredibly knowledgeable. Have a particular cheese in mind? They'll find it for you, or suggest something similar. Don't know what to get? They can use your preferences and palate to figure out cheeses for you! Best part (also pre-COVID), is that they'll cut you a sample of whatever you want to try.
Seriously, you can make a meal just on cheese here, with an ACME (or Semifreddis, if that's your preference) baguette or Pain au Levin. (OK, ok. . . I'll confess that I've done that at least once. Or twice. or . . . OK, I'll stop counting.)
This place is amazing, and they've done a great job limiting clientele with the pandemic. It takes a while to get in if there's a line, but once in, you're no longer bumping into people as you shop.
