Yelp
I came. I saw. I shopped. Five times in six days to make a dozen'ish different entrees with sides for two to four people. I liked shopping here. It seems to be the "best of" for Fred Meyer and Whole Foods combined with Newport Avenue Market-esque friendly staff. The latter comment is high praise. I lived in Bend for 16 years and my heart still belongs to Newport Avenue Market as my favorite of all groceries in town for their extraordinary service and for their top notch products. But if I still lived in Bend, I'd find my way to MOC from time to time too.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: The MOC mission is posted on the wall near check out. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/market-of-choice-bend?select=uTcbMgg8qYSSnrsxb7SKtw On our second day of shopping, the woman at the check out counter asked my husband and me if we found everything we needed. Yes, we said, the store was logically arranged and it was quite easy to do, fun even. She replied, with a tone of genuineness in her voice, "Oh good! It is our goal to make shopping delightful." Mission accomplished that day.
WHAT I LIKE...in addition to the friendly and helpful staff is
...logical layout of store with ample lighting and space in aisles to make shopping easy
...many local Bend products and many products from the Willamette Valley
...wine steward, Cameron, formerly of Whole Foods now runs the wine and beer here
...prepared foods case has a big array of choices
...bulk bins with good quality product in them
...salad bar and olive bar with choices kept well maintained.
..salumeria case includes options like Spanish Lomo Soltado and Salumi brand Pancetta and a guy behind the counter who knows how to cut these correctly plus Olympic Provisions real Frankfurters
...extensive selection of high quality cheeses both domestic and imported
... in house bakery but they also carry local products like Village Baker breads (which they will happily slice if you ask) and Sparrow pastries (like Ocean Rolls) and other quality pre made items like Blue Raeven (not a typo) fruit pies (McMinnville)
...fresh baked pizzas by the slice and the pizza maker was even hand tossing the dough.
...fish case and butcher case staffed by people who could answer questions. (Newport is still my go to for fish and meat, however, then Whole Foods.)
THIS N THAT:
1) PARKING: Less "bumper car" lot than Newport's. Not as big as Whole Foods. This is clearly a "tourists who shop for convenience meals" destination and good to keep in mind as certain 'take out meal' times of day around lunch and dinner hours the parking lot is packed. (Bend's 3.5 Million tourists in a town of 85,000 residents is one of the key reasons I moved.)
2) ACCESSIBILITY: Accessible parking in lot, level in and throughout the store, upper level with loos and eat-in seating via elevator.
3) EAT IN: A few tables off the bakery, near a fireplace which should be handy in Bend's winters, and more upstairs on mezzanine, some outside.
4) LOO: Upstairs. Spacious and sparkly clean.
