I was fortunate enough to win a private wine tasting at Market Street Wine. The store and wine tasting was beyond my expectations. Erin is very fun, pleasant, incredibly knowledgeable about wine, and puts together a great charcuterie board. We had a great time and will be visiting again! Highly recommend!

Google
This wine store was fantastic. I was on a work trip and wanted to go to a vineyard but couldn't make it due to timing. So, I looked up where the best place was to buy local wine downtown. The staff were wonderful! They helped me find wines I would like, held them for me for several hours so I could shop around downtown, provided all the things I needed to safely pack them in my suitcase, gave a sample wine to taste, told me about their beer tasting that night, and even gave me directions to a fabulous speakeasy to visit. If I come back to this area, will visit again.

There is always something going on here and you can always find something interesting to drink, but my favorite part of Market Street Wine is Clinton! Clinton knows eeeeverythjng about wine and music and history and is so fun to talk to and makes this place extra special!

Google
This has always been my favorite wine shop in Charlottesville. I grew up in C'ville (Dad was as professor at UVa) and am a double Hoo (BA/MD). I live in Charlotte now, but every time I visit my Mom I always swing by to score bottles. The service is erudite and friendly, and I have yet to be steered wrong. In a world dominated by virtual wine shops and corporate bib box affairs, artisanal wine sellers are a must for the soul!

I've been going to Market Street Wine for years. They always have a friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help staff. Their large selection of wines are fairly priced, and within a wide range of budgets to meet everything from your casual hangs to your special occasions.

Google
They were extremely helpful in arranging two beautiful bottles with my partner’s input - she told them what tasting notes I prefer, and they went above and beyond to provide some gorgeous wine that was exactly to my liking! A really thoughtful gift made even more lovely by their staff’s personalization. Thank you for all your help - they’re just right, and I’ve enjoyed both so much!

Google
Take a wander into the cellar of this incredible Charlottesville icon. One of my favorite weird spaces, they have a lovely selection of wines beers, and specialty food items. The space feels like a cave, with interesting finds around every corner. The staff is interested in what they sell, and happy to help you find your new favorite thing. Free Friday wine tastings and dog friendly!

Google
Excellent store with excellent staff and owners who are extremely courteous and caring; they will go out of their way to help you! They work hard to ensure that their products meet your aesthetic needs (be it recommendations or even looking for the products that you want). Their wine tastings and beer tastings are great environments for helping people learn about wine, beer, mead, cider, and sake--which is helpful for developing a palette to know what to buy. It also makes them a valuable social hub for meeting people who become friends (whether they're fellow customers or owners and staff). Then there's the food. It's a great place to find high quality foods and to learn about them at the tastings. All in all, it's an invaluable asset to downtown Charlottesville that everyone should learn about.

Yelp
It is such a cute tiny but also big at the same time place! We were trying to find things to do in Charlottesville and I'm so glad we stumbled across this place! All the employees are super sweet. We went and they were doing a free tasting that you got to try 16 different wines from all different regions and they had little stations and a cute little sheet of paper to write notes and mark ones that we liked. We even got a 25% off a wine bottle and so I bought one of the Italian reds!

Yelp
The team at Market Street Wine is amazing. A friend received tenure and friends from all over the country wanted to send a gift to say congrats and celebrate. Thadd and Mikaela were so helpful in putting together a lovely wine basket and treats. Delivery was reasonably priced, they helped coordinate some difficult timing and a quick turn around, and ultimately created a wonderful gift for our friend. It was so nice to support a local store all the way from Los Angeles.

Yelp
Tucked away in the basement of a beautiful old building, this wine shop features an incredible ability to transport customers with featured wines from all over the world while highlighting those here in Virginia. With a friendly and knowledgeable staff, there are wines to taste, much to learn and friends to be made; particularly if you stop in on Friday for wine tasting.

Yelp
I love this wine shop. Every time after a visit I find myself thinking about the experience and feeling a bit like it's the wine shop from my dreams. Or from a movie I would write. Or a classic sitcom I'd star in. A wineshop that seems too perfect to be my reality! I know I sound dramatic, and I am, but hear me out. You walk down the stairs to the cellar-level shop. Now that it's been cleaned and renovated by the new owners, it feels more spacious and airy, but it's still full of nooks and passages and it feels like you've been let into a secret as you step in. There's hand-painted "muralettes" on the walls, they sell local breads and jams and a curated selection of cocktail necessities along with plenty of other accoutrements that might make your wine(/beer) drinking experience better. They have a huge and interesting selection of wine and beer and their Wednesday (beer) and Friday (wine) tastings are such a neat way to engage with other locals who you'd never meet otherwise. I always find thing I never see anywhere else, and I always leave with something extra on top of what I went in for, and I'm thankful for those spontaneous introductions to the treats I didn't know I needed! Love stopping in to Market Street Wine.

Yelp
Best wine shop in Cville. They have found me things other stores don't even understand. Come in and ask - they'll help.

Yelp
This is the Bat Cave of Wine. When I come here, I shed my poor-college student day-time identity and adopt my alter ego: chic, sophisticated wine connoisseur. It's like pretending I'm the sophisticate my bank account could clearly never support. The Good: - The environment. This place literally looks like it was built into a cave. Shopping here is an experience itself. - The wine. Excellent selection of fancy (and not so fancy) wine at a reasonable price point. Plus they offer some harder-to-find varieties of Sake. - The cheese. SO DELICIOUS. Market Street Wineshop features a small but carefully selected assortment of cheese. It's all in the $7-$12 range, but it's all delectable. - The service. They'll help you find what you need, what you want, and what you didn't even know existed. The Bad: - The location: It's hard to find, so bring your iPhone/Blackberry/map-substitute. - The price: It's not as cheap as Kroger or Harris Teeter. You're paying for selection and variety. The Verdict: Go. The extra dollar you pay for your wine is worth it, and you'll walk out with a better bottle (or in my case, better bottles) of wine.

Yelp
Market Street Wineshop is awesome! They have weekly beer (Wednesday) and wine tastings (Friday & Saturday) that are free and fun! They have a large selection of all types of wine as well as beer. They do monthly features at a reduced prices. They also have some local gourmet food items, break from Albemarle Baking Co., and a small selection of cheeses. They carry a nice selection of gift bags too if you're running in for gift bottle of wine. They older gentleman who is always working at the register and super friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Best wine shop in town. Great selection of both beer and wine. Their free wine tastings on Friday and beer tasting on Wednesday are awesome! Wonderful service and they always give great recommendations if you want an idea for a pairing or something new to try.

Yelp
MSWS has a nice, cozy atmosphere however it was a bit too "intimate" for me with people constantly bumping into and touching me. Honestly, I think it was the lack of people's regard for personal space than the actual size of the shop. It's definitely a basement but not creepy grandma's house or a bachelor's pad. The front of the shop to the right does look like someone's work-from-home office but to the left is a huge array of beer and pantry supplies like olive oil and baguettes. The back of the shop has walls and tables filled with wines from all countries, states, and few from Virginia. I've seen this place numerous times as I've driven by but when actually looking for it, went right past it. I went to the Wednesday night free beer tasting. Although I do not like IPAs, the employees were cordial and jovial which helped me suffer through the hoppyness(?), hoppiness(?), hoppieness(?).. Regardless, I will definitely be back to peruse the selection of wine, beer, and other goodies (ie-canned coconut milk, yum!)

Yelp
pros: Where are the glowing reviews?? Esp. now that it's spring/summer. Get your butt over here. What? You're just like me and don't know your wines? Every Fri 5-7:30 free wine tasting. Crowd around in the small space with your friends, their friends, and toast to each other's healths. By the time you're done, you're bound to go home with something. Or someone. Whatever. cons: Some of the stuff (i.e. not beers or wines) can be a tad pricier than what you'd pay at another local grocery store. But that's not what you came for anyway, so stop messing around. Drop the teas or chocolates and pick up some staples -- your salami, cheeses, bread, and wine, beer. You're set. overall: See you next Friday.

Yelp
Cute little shop in the basement of what looks like an apartment building. Huge wine selection and a decent selection of craft beer. I was looking for cider and they didn't have much. But, a great shop for the wine lover.

Yelp
I love this place - when I lived in Cville it was my go-to wine spot. I'd come in, tell them what I was making for dinner, and they'd recommend me a delicious wine. Always helpful and courteous - recommend them to anyone who needs a wine :)

Yelp
I want to preface my review by saying I have been looking forward to an opportunity to visit Market Street Wine for a few months. On Tuesday, I had the opportunity when I was in search of a particular Madeira. I am usually pleasantly surprised by the warm kinship that exist in within the Virginia Wine Community. I don't work in any shop or competition to this business. In fact, I have multiple colleagues that praise this place and its wine tasting evenings. The shop is in a neat below ground store front on the downtown mall. It's relatively easy to find and has a nice little sign outside. The inside of the store has a beautiful vintage vibe. It feels like it could have been a cellar that had been converted into a store. The products are organized well and the space is relatively well lit. The reason for my two star review is the awful, alienating woman working the register. On my initial visit (Tuesday,) I approached her and asked her where to find something. I got no greeting or smile, nothing indicating that she actually appreciated my business. I would have understood if the place was a bit busy but the other two customers in the store where being helped by an older gentlemen (the owner) at the register. The owner was nice and helpful when special ordering something for me btw. The same awkward lady took my info for the order but sharply told me "I didn't ask for that, I don't need it" when giving her my last name for the order. I tried to make polite small talk but was completely ignored at every turn. She also just walked off as I pulled out my credit card, not bothering to acknowledge me any further or tell me I didn't need to pay until later. I didn't even get a thank you?? It was overall just strange and left me feeling confused. I brushed it off as she was having a bad day but then I had a WORSE experience when picking up my order! Upon entering the store on Thursday, I notice the same woman and she all but ignored me. Luckily there was a really nice guy working the inner counter whom I told I was there to pick up an order. Awkward lady then interrupts my conversation with the other employee to bark "ITs AT THE REGISTER." Okay.. I get your point, please don't snap at me. While ringing up my order, I attempted again to tell her how lovely the shop was and how happy I was to visit. I also tried to let her know I worked in the wine industry as well, trying to get her to engage me in some way. Again, I was completely ignored, she didn't even acknowledge I had said anything. The only saving grace was the other male employee came back to say hi and offer assistance. Sadly he was leaving for the day and left me alone with the woman for another excruciating five minutes while she attempted to work out the Yelp discount. This left me so uncomfortable I almost walked out. I only purchased one of the two originally ordered bottles out of sheer responsibility for ordering it. I'm from NYC and I've been to some snooty wine stores. Never have I experienced such horrible cold customer service. It's wine, it's ment to be enjoyable. I don't expect you to suck up to me but atleast be able to have some basic customer service skills. I actually have directed two separate sets of visitors to this store but would never do that again as I cannot be sure they won't be met by this woman. In fact I wouldn't return unless I knew she wasn't working. What a major disappointment.

Yelp
Best wine shop in town, in the state, country and globe (I have completed an exhaustive search). Robert and his aspiring artist staffers bring a serious yet unstuffy appreciation for wine to the little cellar that feels like home. Buying wine here feels like an important part of enjoying the meal it goes with - you don't get that in a chain store.

Yelp
Tucked in a nice half basement space a block off the Mall, this is the place to get wine in C-ville. The knowledgeable staff is friendly and very good at helping select any type of wine. They a great selection of wines and beer from all parts of the world. The friday wine tastings are fun and are a great way to start the weekend. They also carry a nice selection of foods to complement the wines.

Laura C.

Yelp
My favorite Cville wine shop! Lots of selections in a variety of prices, super helpful staff and a funky vibe. They also have the cheese and bread or other snacks you need when you are swinging by on your way to a party so you can make it a one stop shop.

Yelp
Tucked away and a little hard to find, this little beer, wine, and grocery store manages to be fairly well stocked and the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Their method of displaying wines is somewhat off-kilter which can make it difficult if you're looking for something in particular.

Ben N.

Yelp
Walking in is more like walking into someone's house than a store. It's a very relaxed atmosphere except for the Friday tastings, which rock! I don't know much about wine, but I do know one thing: just bring their "Wine of the Week" to a party and your friends will be impressed every time.

Yelp
Wow, what a wonderful wine shop! It is quaint and inviting with a very nice selection of wines in various price ranges. There is also a varied selection of wines to taste. Since I also like beer, I appreciate the selection of beers and ales. On the way out I also check out breads and chocolates. Robert the owner has an extensive knowledge of wines and has provided wines for our many wine dinners. We have not been wrong for the past 10 years of getting wines here.

Caroline T.

Yelp
This place was great! We walked in 10 minutes before closing and Thad gave us an hour wine tasting. He was so knowledgeable and generous with his time. The service was fantastic and we had a great time. Thanks Thad! Hoping to come again soon

Tullia L.

Yelp
The Market Street Wineshop is one of Downtown Cville's institutions. It has a lovely feel to it with its warren of rooms in what used to be a cellar. It is stocked with a wonderful selection of wines for every price tag. I always rely on the knowledge and expertise of the person tending the wine room especially when having company. I especially love the variety of breads and cheeses and accessories that make a great accompaniment to any wine purchase.

Elisabeth W.

Yelp
A local gem. Market Street Wine Shop has an awesome selection of wine and beer at a great price for the quality. The have free beer tasting on Wednesdays and free wine tastings on Fridays. Plus they are pet friendly. The service is always wonderful. Highly recommend!

Jim L.

Yelp
Friday night wine and cheese tasting was great. They have the best selection of beer, wine, cheese and bread. Nice friendly service from knowledgeable people.

Jeff J.

Yelp
Love this place! They have a great beer selection. Highly recommended the tastings. I almost always leave with something I tasted for the evening.

Fumiko K.

Yelp
This wine cave has an owner who has the best knowledge of wine, and does not hesitate to share it with customer. He made me realize the importance of wine-pairing for my dinner party. I called him and read the menu ( 7 course non-nationality menu with French and Japanese influence) and he came up with a perrrrfect wines, even for the one for dessert. I am not giving out the name of that one simply because I am afraid everyone will run there and buy all! Next time when I cook seriously, I know I will ask for his help again! Thank you, wine cave-man!

Molly C.

Yelp
Amazing selections of rose, eclectic wines from Spain, Portugal, Washington state, Virginia plus freshly baked bread and beers. Worth traveling to see if you don't know them already

LUIS C.

Yelp
A wonderful and cozy wine shop with excellent selection of wines. Very friendly owner and staff that go out of their way to help you find the right wine. Also, if you are looking for a specific wine that they do not have, they will go out of their way to find the wine for you and price it very reasonably.
