Marquis Of Lorne - Review - Fitzroy - Melbourne - The Infatuation

"You can’t really say you’ve been to Melbourne if you haven’t spent a few hours in the afternoon sun outside the MoL. Patrons spill out of the multi-level pub and into the street, hands wrapped around glasses of natural wine, frosty pots (glasses of beer) and half-price happy hour tinnies (cans of beer), many of them produced nearby. Inside, punters and their greyhounds laze in the dog-friendly front bar, ordering classic chicken parm and the mainstay rockling burger—battered fish on buttery brioche with just the right ratio of crunch to compressibility. Or try the potato cakes with chili salt, a ritzier version of what you’ll find at fish-and-chip shops along the Australian coastline." - Ellen Fraser

Fantastic chill pub lunch in a quiet street near brunswick Street. Both the steak and schnitzel were excellent. Great quality and tender. Friendly staff. A banging menu pub clearly executed by a skilled chef. The bean side and chips was super tasty too. Melbourne at its best. Will be back for sure.

This pub is EXCEPTIONAL! We came here because it was one of the few places open late and accepting dogs to tag along. Not only was our dog accepted at the outside seating, he was actual let inside the pub - where we had to go to be served food. And the food turned out to be exceptionally good. Fresh oysters, duck and salmon were all top notch. Add the friendly service and the great vibe with friendly guests - the perfect place for a late dinner - not only when you want to take your dog along.

Awesome food, the kangaroo steak is fantastic and their Sunday roast never disappoints. Do keep in mind it’s a very popular Fitzroy pub so 90% of the time it’s painfully loud but it’s so worth putting up with.

MOL has become a weekly afternoon ritual for oysters and a crisp glass of white wine but the other night I went for dinner and tried the Kangaroo and really enjoyed it. The venue is cozy and old and cool. It’s as Fitzroy as it gets.

Another gem in the pub scene, My partner and I shared a great meal with excellent service that made a very enjoyable experience. The lay back environment gives a relaxing tone, washing it all down with a cold Carlton. A popular local Fitzroy venue that needs a visit.

A dog friendly bar downstairs. The food is good but the steak is a bit too pepperish. Would be nice if we can have the sauce on the side.

A charming historic pub in Fitzroy dating back to 1873. After a stylish makeover in 2014 by the talented team led by Steve Rowley and Matt Vero, it now serves up modern Australian pub fare with a fresh twist. The menu features hearty classics like schnitzels and scotch fillet, all under the direction of executive chef Scott Stevenson. Here’s an overview of what we had: 🎀 Salt Cod Croquettes: Delicious, perfect, so moreish 🍗 Chicken Schnitzel, Slaw & Salsa Verde: The most juicy schnitzel, great slaw & loved the salsa verde. 🐠 Rockling Burger & Chips: Loved the flavour of this, fish was perfect, would’ve loved something briny to really elevate it, the bun was a touch dry. Overall a brilliant pub, couldn’t fault the service, great selection of drinks and I will be back plenty more times I am sure of it! 4.4/5

We came in a Sunday afternoon and shared a selection of starters all of which were sensational. Attentive friendly service and great atmosphere

Yelp
Had some after work drinks with friends. Happy hour was great half price tins. After that I was already so happy to pay double for my tins afterwards. The outdoor smoking area was very hot and full of Fitzroy revellers. Staff were very attentive to pick up empty drinks and empty the ashtray. I will come back!

Yelp
I really like the upstairs vibe of Marquis, with the small, simple bar area and rainbow 90s lightbulbs, however in the last few years as the Collingwood end of Fitzroy has gentrified, Marquis of Lorne has become a hub of 'bros' 'suits' (top button undone, to say "hey, I'm casual") and a plethora of the kind of people you don't want to see at your local. Weekends have gotten strange here, the odd mix can push locals to find new haunts and I used to feel like the Northside old-timers could come here and have a beer, even if they are a bit rough, but now it seems like they are no longer welcome. A great institution ruined by wannabe frat boys.

Yelp
This place seems to have slowly evolved over the three years that I have been wondering around Melbourne. I remember the first time I came to check it out it happened to be closed, however I wandered back here a number of months later to discover that it was open, though pretty quiet. However since it is a little (but not too much) out of my way it wasn't until much recently that I decided to come by here again, and I have to say that it is now really lively. Basically it is a back street pub, which is the type of pub that I really like. They do have a rooftop bar, but it gets pretty crowded with the smokers. They also have a restaurant on the second floor. It's a pretty small pub, but pretty cool as well.

Yelp
So this place was closed for a while and finally, in late 2014, there looked to be a bit of love being breathed in to it. It opened, the hipsters flocked. On a hot night they would be everywhere out the front drinking pints and looking too cool for school. Signs proclaimed happy hours! $16 steak night! I wasn't convinced I'd fit in with the hipsters (am I in denial?) but the $16 steak on Tuesday night sure did sound like an appealing way to test the waters. We arrived a little after 6pm and it was pretty dead. There was 4 or 5 others in the bar and not a single soul outside. Was it too early? Was it not sunny enough? Had the hipsters moved on to the new hot spot in town? We ordered steaks ($16 for a 300gm porterhouse with chips and salad) and an extra portion of salad to make us feel better for clogging our arteries with the chips. A pint for him and a glass of Shiraz for me. The steaks themselves were okay. The flavour was good but they were cooked a little over than our requested medium-rare. The chips were super crunchy (twice fried?) and the portion of salad we ordered was, well, a bit strange. The cider dressing it was served with tasted suspiciouly like melted butter and congealed a bit on the raddichio leaves. Maybe it was supposed to do that, who knows? Dinner for two at around $60 is pretty decent if you ask me. For a resonably priced Tuesday night meal in a quieter environment then the Marquis of Lorne isn't a bad option

Yelp
This is a pub that just keeps going up. There are four levels to this building, including a little rooftop area - which I highly recommend. Just one word of caution, the stairs are very very old and uneven, so be very careful as you carry your pint up those many flights. And be even more wary of laughing and belittling someone who manages to lose their pint twice on those dangerous stairs only to trip over yourself a few minutes later. I have never eaten at the Marquis of Lorne, but the food looks pretty good. They even have a specific dining space on the second level. And it's definitely worth a pop in for a pint or six if you are traveling through the back streets of Fitzroy.

Yelp
Having won tickets to a Tuesday night Fringe show being held a short walk away on Johnston Street, we decided on dinner at the Marquis of Lorne for the very fact it was a Tuesday and that meant steak night. Having been to the venue on many past occasions, I had only ever walked past the dining area (contained on the middle level) on my way up to the rooftop. Mind you, this is not the biggest rooftop or top floor area as a whole, however I have always found the fellow punters to be laid back and open to the idea of sharing table should the limited space require it, and the staff are also friendly and welcoming. With our show starting at 7.30pm, we were forced to make a reservation close to nana dining o'clock - ie 6pm. The dining area was fairly empty upon our arrival but quickly filled up as the hour hit a more reasonable time to eat dinner! However, I do digress. Onto the actual experience and the star feature. Steak Night. $16 porterhouse. No sauce or salad options, it was straight up with pepper sauce/gravy and fries. And oh. my. god. Just an entire plate of deliciousness. A huge slab of steak, cooked to perfection, crispy chips and enough gravy sauce to dip the chips in but not too much so as to make them soggy. Officially the best steak I have had in Melbourne to date. My only disappointment? The fact I no longer live in Fitzroy and will have to travel across town to enjoy this delicious fare. Definitely worth the trip, I can see myself being a regular on a Tuesday. Seriously, I cannot give this enough praise. Do yourself a favour and get there. SOON.

Yelp
Went here tonight with a friend for an after work drink and meal before a show. $16 porterhouse steak special with chips and pepper sauce. Best steak i have had in AGES!! i asked for rare and actually got rare, not medium or blue, perfect! Chips were yummy and the pepper sauce (which i normally wouldnt have) was delish. Also, half price tinnies between 4 and 6. We each also had a glass of wine with our meals. So for $30, a beer, a steak and a glass of wine. Pretty great midweek meal out.

Yelp
The Marquis is one of those corner pubs that Fitzroy has very few of, that hovers below the radars of the bona fide hipsters and is actually good in spite of it's Fitzroyal location. Part of the reason it's so good, I guess, is that there are so many 'cool' places to drink in the area, that this shabby old joint probably doesn't enter the consciousness of the rising generation. The Marquis is also one of the few un-renovated pubs around, so holds on to its inherent character and charm. It's a multi-layered behemoth and they serve food in the upstairs dining area. They also show the odd smaller gig and are open to things like book launches. And added plus is that the pub exists opposite the Centre for Contemporary Photography and a couple of other ripper galleries. She's a grand old girl, don't tell the youngsters.

Yelp
Visited the Marquis of Lorne for the first time on a lovely summery Saturday night. The husband and I were keen for a delicious "gastro-pub" meal and we certainly weren't disappointed. With no reservation, we rocked up and made our way up to the dining room. Lovely fit out and lovely staff who quickly found us a table for two beside a big open window with a gentle breeze drifting in. The husband had the market fish (rainbow trout on this occasion) with peas, leeks, mint & garlic. I went old school and had the chicken schnitzel with vinegar slaw & salsa verde. Let me say this was not your usual counter meal schnitty. The chicken was perfect, covered in a light and crispy crumb, and was accompanied perfectly by the vinegary slaw. The husband also approved of the fish, although really did need a side of fries at least to fill out the meal (he is an Ironman in training after all and can put away some serious food at the moment). We also ended up ordering dessert - a chocolate brownie sandwich with white chocolate & caramel; oh my! Being "with child" I forgot to ask if the dessert contained raw egg (fail), so had to ask once it had been brought out. Fortunately for me, no raw egg to be found; and the dessert was richly decadent and delicious!! I must also say, the waitstaff were so so lovely about my query (and offered a big congrats) unlike some places, which make you feel like a nuisance for asking such inane (in their mind) questions. Major win!! The husband had a couple of "tinnies" of the Mornington Pale Ale, while I stuck to the lime & sodas, hold the vodka! All in all a very lovey summer's evening! We'll end back for sure.

Yelp
Somewhat shabby, slightly down at heel venue spread over a number of levels. Came here for a birthday function and enjoyed it. Somehow the place works as it has a comfortable warm feel about it. My lamb neck was lovely although slightly undersized for the price. It worked well with the grenache from the wine list. It'd take me a while to work out why this venue feels good. Perhaps it was the abundant wood surrounds and the open fire. Perhaps it was the reasonable food and the lovely service. To be frank, all I wanted to do was sit in front of the open fire for a while with a fortified wine. One day perhaps. (By the way, the waitress with the bone coloured top and black pants, you're a superstar. You were pleasant, efficient and never missed a beat tonight. The boss here needs to raise your pay)

Yelp
Let the bar experts dazzle you with their beer and fermentation knowledge while they treat your tastebuds to the best Melbourne has to offer in sours, ipa, and blends that can blow your mind. Best potato cakes and fish burgers in Melbourne. Try it.

Yelp
Marquis of Lorne is a quaint and dynamic bar/restaurant with a lot of character. It consists of three levels. Level 1 - a dimly lit bar in the evenings with a lively and welcoming vibe. Level 2 - delicious, modern restaurant/pub meals with extensive craft beer and wine selection. I had the lamb pie with mushy peas which was fantastic alongside a local IPA. Great table service - friendly and hardworking bar staff. There's also an open fireplace which was great. Level 3 - twin open-air beer gardens with high tables and high stools and a small bar in between the two. Great little nooks to catch up with a couple of close friends.

Yelp
REVMPED version of MoL rocks! So different yet so little has changed. Good selection of craft beers food looked but didn't eat anything this time. The staff were friendly talking to us about the work they done to the place. A relaxed local hangout. This is the pub it always should have been. The Sample Golden Ale was gorgeous as was Grasscutter Summer Ale. I will deffo come back.

Yelp
Since the reno this place has turned into a hugely popular pub for the Fitzroy locals with an awesome vibe. Has many levels and a rooftop bar. Tuesday steak night absolutely pumps and I haven't had a bad meal there. Gets pretty noisy when it's full.

Yelp
The Marquis of Lorne was the first Melbourne pub I visited where I realised that London had its work cut out for it in maintaining its mantle as the city with the best pubs. A tall, multi-leveled and cavernous affair in between Smith and Brunswick Streets, the Marquis of Lorne is a good old fashioned pub with a very interesting food menu, a ridiculous amount of seating and a ruddy good roof garden that can accommodate up to 60 people. Perhaps not as glamorous as some of Fitzroy's other drinking holes, what it lacks in polish the Marquis of Lorne more than makes up for with its old fashioned charm and some indescribable quality that seems to ensure a great night whenever a visit to the Marquis is on the cards. The food is modern and different with an Asian influence and there is an ever-changing roster of bands and the occasional great DJ. One of my favourite Fitzroy pubs.

Yelp
This place looks good and I was really looking forward to visiting, but it wasn't for me. Good selection of drinks and all but the service was really off. There was a bit of a "too cool for school" vibe and I didn't feel massively welcome. There's talk of their rooftop but it is absolutely tiny, and no views to speak of. When I went up there everyone was squeezed in and if you're not a smoker you probably won't like it. We were going to stay for dinner as the dining room looked awesome, but again the staff were a bit off when we asked a few questions so we decided to leave it. There's way too many places nearby that are better. I'd give it another go, as it may just have been an other day but the Napier and the Union have nothing to fear, I don't think.

Yelp
I noticed nobody had left a comment about the Marquis of Lorne for ages so thought I would add a little something and say it's still as great as ever, living so close makes me a little biased but went there with some friends again recently and we all agreed it's just one of those places you just want to keep coming back to, nice wine, nice food, nice company and gorgeous atmosphere.

Yelp
Lamb roll was measly but same price as meals that came with chips and sides. It was really more a lunch thing. Considering the nice setting, the meals were nothing special. Also had to chase up our drinks.
