Southern Menu Staple Geechie Boy Mill to Change Branding | Eater Carolinas

"A grist mill whose grits appear on menus across Charleston and around the country has announced it will change its name after criticism that its current moniker appropriates the identity of the Gullah Geechie community. The owners, Betsy and Greg Johnsman, who inherited the name when they purchased the property in 2003 and are not of Gullah Geechie heritage, faced questions over profiting from the title of a marginalized group whose ancestors were enslaved laborers in the Lowcountry. In response to public concern — amplified by advocates and public figures such as chef Samin Nosrat — the owners said they have begun the legal steps to rename the business, affirmed their commitment to providing high-quality products, and promised to announce a new name once paperwork and legal requirements are complete." - Erin Perkins

How Junebaby’s Catfish and Grits Comes Together | Eater Seattle

"Sourced from Geechie Boy Mill in South Carolina, the blue corn grits used here are a coarsely ground heirloom variety that lend a distinct lavender appearance and a sweeter flavor than the more commonly used white or yellow grits, and when simmered for 40 minutes their inherent earthiness is allowed to shine alongside a touch of parmesan for umami." - Suzi Pratt

Marsh Hen Mill is a hidden gem in Edisto Island. This family-owned and operated mill has been serving up delicious food and drinks for over 30 years. The menu features Southern classics like fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and collard greens. They also have a great selection of beers on tap and a full bar. The atmosphere at Marsh Hen Mill is casual and relaxed. The dining room is spacious and there's a large outdoor patio with picnic tables. The service is friendly and attentive. I highly recommend Marsh Hen Mill for a delicious meal with family or friends. #marshhenmill #edistoisland #southernfood #friedchicken #shrimpandgrits #collardgreens #beer #familyowned #casualdining #relaxedatmosphere #friendlyservice #musttry I hope you enjoy your meal at Marsh Hen Mill!

A very quaint shop. They grind their own grits which is the best I have had…I love the speckled grits the most.

We're visiting from Seattle and stopped here to have a look at the General Store. Heather was absolutely amazing! She gave us the full history of the mill, the different grain processes and what each type of grits & cornmeal tastes like and the color and texture! We learned so much and are so happy we stopped! Thank you for such a memorable experience! Can't wait to try our goodies at home!
