This new spot has been popping off on TikTok for its minimalist vibes and legendary Paru matcha. Of course, I had to check it out, especially after being disappointed in my first taste of Paru matcha at Java Earth.
I went in before noon on a Tuesday, and the cafe was already packed! My boyfriend and I had to stand around for a bit to find a place to sit. The outdoor seating was available, but it was bright and sunny out and we didn't want to boil, lol.
The first impression admittedly wasn't the best. I don't know why all the new coffee shops in SD are so menu-phobic, but I am awfully tired of walking into coffee shops and not being able to scan a full-size menu up on the wall. After having to awkwardly step off to the side to where the register was, we were greeted by two small paper menus. The barista seemed pretty annoyed that we didn't know what we wanted (which, no posted menu?) and she immediately had us step over to the side to read the menu and take another customer, telling us to "call her when we were ready" in a very curt tone. She literally pushed the menus out of our way and across the countertop as we were looking at them! As a barista of five years, I get it, but a little friendliness goes a long way.
As for the drinks, they were pretty tasty! My boyfriend had a cappuccino, and the foam was nicely textured. The espresso itself was nice and strong with a smooth mouthfeel and citrusy, earthy flavor. The matcha I was glad to see being traditionally prepped with a bamboo chasen! That is very hard to come by in SD, so kudos to Marta. This allowed for my matcha latte to have the great taste I expect from Paru.
Overall, the experience was meh. The awkward navigation and lackluster customer service wasn't a great first impression. Having delicious drinks is one thing, but having a more customer-focused approach makes a world of difference and allows for repeat visits. I'd be willing to give this place a second try, but mostly because the matcha was really good.
