"Since Spencer Ivankoe opened this Southeast brunch cafe, he’s been on a mission to make it to Portland restaurant royalty. Not only will the restaurant serve brunch, but also it’s going to do wine dinners, and collaboration dinners, and there’s going to be lobster rolls with truffle aioli. That dogged perseverance is well-aligned with Aries, especially considering the absolutely star-studded collab dinner the restaurant threw earlier this month." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
I had a day off and chose Marthas for its great vibe, space and reliably good drink products. Coffees, chais and teas can be made less sweet--all quality!

Meghan Kearney

Google
Martha's is back open in the morning! Coffee selections, breakfast/lunch sandos, cocktails and other bevs. Awesome spot for a quick bite. You can enjoy it out on the huge patio with your dog or watch all the other doggos running around the dog park.

Google
The food is really good. The jam on my bacon egg English muffin really carried the sandwich! The service is really friendly and the food came quickly. I wouldn't go too far out my way for it but if you're in the area I'd give it a try. The bad: they have a shady, misleading tip setup. The tip on the tablet has the highest tip on the left which is designed to make people absent mindedly tip the highest when they aren't aware of it.

Google
I’m so glad this place is open again. Great vibe, nice service, delicious coffee. Plus alcohol, love it. Can’t wait to go back for an afternoon beer.

Google
Martha's is my go-to coffee shop in the Buckman neighborhood!! Service is awesome, music playing is always a vibe, and overall food + coffee is exceptional! They also host different art/music events.

Theo Truong

Google
Expensive food for shockingly small portions and poor quality. Staff and atmosphere are great.

Google
Beautiful patio, but I was a little disappointed by the menu. They had a weird little salad, but everything else looked like it was off a dive bar menu, lots of fried things and burgers. It would be nice to have some healthy options like nuts and olives. Prices are reasonable though.

Tank Girl

Google
Cute place, used to love it here but more recently it’s generally overrun with crowds and their prices have gone up. Drinks are ok, depending on the bartender you get, food is overpriced and mediocre at best, but they have an absolutely wonderful beer/cider selection.

Yelp
One of the best bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Also ordered the Lavender Haze drink which was pretty tasty. Lots of seating inside and outside, which has great people and dog watching because of the expansive off leash dog park next to the building. Will definitely visit again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
They has a captive audience and a horrific menu. Awful, over salted pizza with three pathetic choices. Really - who thought those up? Vegan cream cheese on a pesto pizza? Gag! (ANY cream cheese is inappropriate). They do have a turkey sandwich which could have some hope, but if you have a choice between here and the rooftop, ALWAYS go for the rooftop

Candice B.

Yelp
Review based on vegan options: A couple of things can be made vegan, which is great! However they are just "okay." Marthas wouldn't be my first choice for a vegan meal, but at least they can feed you :)

Yelp
Located on the bottom floor of the old Washington high school turned bar and music venue (Revolution Hall), Martha's is a fairly quiet bar and cafe. They are set up as a coffee shop/cafe on one side of the bar, and as a drinking establishment on the longer side of the bar. For the evening, they have a pretty good list of taps, a few cocktails on the menu, as well as some sandwiches. We stuck to a few beers, but enjoyed sitting in the place and watching people walk by outside (Martha's is about half a floor below the ground). The bartender was friendly and notably did a good job warning off two guys who seemed like they were starting to bother two young women.

Jenna R.

Yelp
I've been a loyal Marthan for at least a couple years now, and it took me this long to write a review because I've been selfish. I didn't want this place to get more popular/crowded. But it's already happened, and I love every bartender here, so it's time I paid some due recognition. Martha's is just a gem - an especially sparkly one in the warmer months when you can enjoy the outdoor patio that overlooks a large off-leash dog park. I admit I was pretty bummed when they put up the fence last year between the patio and the park, but I have to just assume they were forced to go the Night Vale route. They would like to remind everyone that there is no alcohol allowed in the Dog Park. Fortunately, people and dogs are allowed. For now. Beware the voice. Nevertheless, it's still an awesome dang dog park where you can watch pups of all sizes and floofiness steal each other's balls and then come hang out with you on the patio. Drink beer with one hand, give belly rubs with the other. What more could you want? Okay, so actual cafe/bar review stuff that isn't about doggos: - Amazing, friendly bar staff. Every single one is great. This is a rare find in this town and you know I'm right. - Awesome selection of beer - Tasty food, albeit a smaller selection than most pubs - Decent WiFi and a TON of outlets! This is by far my favorite place to come with the laptop and do work. - Plenty of seating options and a selection of board games Only a couple minor complaints that I'm writing more as a heads up than anything: - Music is totally touch and go. It's usually decent.. but.. not always. I love you, bar staff, but two hours of sad solo femme folk is two too many! And it's usually loud, so bring headphones if you're gonna work. - Chairs aren't very comfortable. I still like doing work here, but I have to just accept that my butt will go numb in the hard wooden seats within the first half hour. Maybe I'm just old and need to bring a butt pillow with me everywhere. Sometimes they do open mic nights (I think on Mondays at 7 or 8pm) but for the most part the crowd is a decent size unless there's a show happening at Rev Hall. So grab your butt and/or butt pillow, and head on over for a beer. And give Charlie a high-five. And some floofs their belly rubs.

Anthony C.

Yelp
Dog friendly park right in the back and this place looks like an old school, but I like it. Came here in the Spring of 2016 and loved it. Great brews, atmosphere inside and out. Friendly neighborhood too. Relaxing.

Corinne H.

Yelp
I live within 3 blocks and I can't believe I hadn't come here before. I'll be a regular now, this place is great. Excellent bagels, the lox are top quality, plus they make pizzas. Water avenue coffee and Holy Kakow syrups (cardamom is my favorite), plus a solid beer selection. They have some sweet happy hour deals from 4-6, and the option of rooftop seating for a view of the SW hills and downtown. I can't wait to bring visitors from out of town here, it's a real slice of Portland. Gotta take away a star because the service can be pretty terrible. You may stand at the bar for 5 minutes before being acknowledged, even if it's not busy, and then be dealt with brusquely as if you are a nuisance. I'll still give them another chance.

Monica D.

Yelp
I'm happy this place is here for convince of shows and beer options. Today I ordered two Left Bower. The sandwich had potential to be decent but the bread was so old that I just ate the meat out. Disappointing for $11.

Eddie B.

Yelp
There is a great selection of beer here. The bar staff are efficient. I appreciate that more than anything. They're nice. Bonus. The music was a good mix and volume. Seating was hit and miss. Waited for a spot to open. Pizza was great. The crust was a perfect taste.

Jeff W.

Yelp
Well once they got popular they forgot about a decent happy hour. $1 off pints and no happy hour on the roof talk about a shitty deal. Now that they're super busy after 6 they can charge whatever they like...

Nathanial G.

Yelp
Incredible taplist, killer cocktails. I've been to Martha's a few times, and am writing this after I visited the rooftop bar for the first time. Arrived around 4:30/5ish with co-workers, grabbed some happy hour drinks at Martha's, then took them upstairs (bar upstairs DOES NOT currently have happy hour, but you can take your drink up). At this point, it was already pretty packed. Finding a table was pretty hard, but lots of folks seemed happy standing around and drinking in the sun. There could be more umbrellas and tables.

Brooks M.

Yelp
This is an A-OK kinda joint! Excited to see good things going into the old Washington High School. This place has solid food and drink, a nice atmosphere and pretty standard Portland service. All in all a perfectly nice addition to the neighborhood. I hope to see big things come out of this building and space. I will continue to patron here and see if it pushes into the warm and welcoming 4 star world soon. The breakfast sammi is AWEsome. The egg patty was a little cold so they may need to work on the warm up timing but generally amazing flavor combos and simple good things here.

Jim T.

Yelp
Serene neighborhood perch. It feels like you are on the roof of your old high school... wait. There's not much to say about this spot except that it is a great place to chillax with a beverage and breathe in the lush treetops, peaked dormers and, of course, Portland skyline. With the dog park below, the people and canine watching are great perks.

Ashley K.

Yelp
Writing this as I'm sitting on the patio watching all the little puppies play (wishing I had brought my little chiweenie...next time). Was impressed by the fast and friendly service - the prices are reasonable too for a pretty hearty sandwich and some chips. I ordered The River - with smoked salmon, pickled fennel (so amazing), capers and some kind of chive spread on rye. I think if it would have been on difference bread (it was on rye) or maybe a bagel - which they have there - I would have given this place five stars. The cocktail I tried was a Mount Vernon - gin, St. Germain, lemon and peach bitters - it was a little on the strong side but aside from that not too bitter or sweet! I may just order rose next time though... This may be my new favorite summer place to come through while I catch up on my Yelping and want to hang out with my pup. I'm for sure a fan of Martha's.

Yelp
Update: Um, I guess I shouldn't have been so critical in the early days while Martha's worked out the kinks. I just love coming here any time of day. Saturday mornings are nice and chill. Friendly upbeat service and really good coffee. One breakfast sandwich option and baked goods and good lunch options. Love the atmosphere and outdoor patio is perfect in afternoons with dog park next door. Perfect summer days here. OLD REVIEW: So I want to give more stars but I just can't because of the consistently bad attitude and service for morning coffee. I know this is portland but give me a break. I come here often because I live nearby. Consistently treated like I am dirt and the barista/cashier would rather get back to texting. Much rather go to Floyds down the street even if it doesn't have as cool an atmosphere. Sunday mornings here are definitely worse given the church crowd and even if you are definitely not part of that crowd, you are sure to receive the undeserving bad treatment times three. UPDATE: manager/owner? Immediately addressed issues. Morning barista superb service now and friendly and knows what she is doing!

Yelp
The menu sucks. It's almost all vegetarian and the food is not very good. If you're going to Revolution Hall for a show, this building has two restaurants--Martha's and Show Bar. Both menus are terrible and the food is pretty bad, so eat somewhere else. Then, stop at Show Bar for a cocktail before the show.

Ben B.

Yelp
Please switch to a different internet system. Yours sucks. It truly does. Spotty, in and out, kicks you off, can't log back in. I'm here at least once a week, I always order more than just a cup of coffee, and the Internet access is PAINFUL. Please. Make a change. It's 2018 and it shouldn't be this hard for a coffee shop. Fix this problem, and I'll happily rate higher. ;-)

Yelp
We came to Marthas for a new experience, and it was so much fun. The whole wheat bagels were tasty, and the ambiance was great. Loved the wall of Marthas and the classroom feel--so fitting for a place In the old Washington High School. Autumn, the server and barista and maybe manager (?), was very friendly and enthusiastic. Since I am a Martha I got a Martha Washington mug. Will come back and check out more menu choices in the future.

Alyssa C.

Yelp
Outdoor seating with 30+ craft beers OVERLOOKING A DOG PARK?! I really don't know what else you could possibly ask for. I come here on the reg to bring my pup out to play and enjoy a beer (which is quite cheap during happy hour!). I really wish there were more places in Portland with this concept. The only changes I would make would be to expand the menu a bit and maybe throw some rotating taps in and a few additional wine options. But really, I'm just being nitpicky! Oh - and let the dogs inside when it gets cold...but now i'm being REALLY nit picky ;)

Yelp
I can only speak for the service and the food. After waiting 10 minutes on their coffee side, I asked where to order coffee. I was instructed to go to the bar to order my cafe mocha. Again, waited 10 minutes. Then, ordered and told to go back to the coffee side. Waited again 5-10 minutes, no one acknowledged I was there. After waiting the third time, I asked if this was the right place. Someone told me yes. Finally, got the cafe mocha after 25 minutes. Ugh. The worst part is one of the waitresses made eye contact twice knowing I was waiting and still didn't bother to ask how I was doing. The one saving grace was the guy who gave me the cafe mocha. He apologized for the wait. It also helped that it was the Pete Souza night with my partner.

Yelp
Stopped by here before attending the HUMP Film Festival. I love the converted school/movie/chic theme. The bar seems to be limited, I didnt drink but my friend was unhappy about his gin and tonic, turns out they gave him soda water instead. Another friend had the pizza, it looked good and she said it tasted pretty good as well.

Kai N.

Yelp
Pleasant atmosphere and a good Juice Newton sandwich. I didn't taste the butternut squash as much as I would have hoped though however the dill made it better for me. Coffee was great too.

Jared H.

Yelp
The River sandwich is Good. Quality lox. Dog park behind the restaurant patio. Menu is basic, with pizza, salad, and sandwiches. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat options!

Renae S.

Yelp
I love this place and go here frequently! The guy that works in the morning here with the beanie and the beard makes the best Americano with steamed soy I have ever had in my life. The full me leaves on top is absolutely perfect. Their food is also quite tasty. I haven't eaten all the options, but I've had a couple of sandwiches and no complaints! the sandwich with the nut butter, jelly and bacon is really good. My only complaint about this place is how loud the music is. It's like being front row at a concert. Anytime I try and go in here to study or just sit and relax or ease into the morning I find myself needing to leave after about 10 minutes because my head is pounding I can't even hear myself think. I did ask a girl at the counter to turn it down once and I got the look of death and have never done so again.

Yue L.

Yelp
Stopped by here on our way to the airport this morning as it is near our AirBnB. At first we almost missed it driving by. It's interesting location is that it's at a High School. One wouldn't have guessed it was there unless you are looking for it. There were a few people with their dogs at the large, grassy fenced in lawn right outside. Inside we found an array of bagels, pizzas, sandwiches and salads. I had the Avocado Toast and it was really delish, would be even better if the bread was toasted. My friend had the Juice Newton sandwich and she loved it as well. The lemon ricotta spread was delicious and not too heavy and they were very generous with the avocado slices. Nice service, pretty, light filled interior and looks like an impressive beer list for HH and after. Will have to stop by on our next trip there! BTW, the vegan pizza looked amazing but we didn't have time to try it.

Benjamin T.

Yelp
Delicious bagels, very comfortable, pleasant music, lots of natural light, friendly staff, reasonable price; I would definitely recommend this place!

Molly B.

Yelp
The food was great, the rooftop beautiful with a great view. Every employee from the door to the restaurant to the rooftop bar was super friendly and treated us like they really cared!

Aaron G.

Yelp
I feel lucky with this place so close to my apartment. Happy hour 4-6 is great. The rooftop area is awesome. The dog park outside is fun as hell. Board games, food, coffee, great beer selection and cocktails. I love ending my workday with a visit to Marthas.

Ben S.

Yelp
Nice coffee, tasty beers and snacks, and good environment. But I really wish they didn't blast their beach/sinatra music so loud. It makes an otherwise great joint a grueling place to work, and sometimes it's impossible to have meetings / conversations there because you struggle to be heard.

Kim K.

Yelp
Had the Canary vegan BBQ sandwich!! So good!! Large portion too, so be hungry or share!!

Brian O.

Yelp
Music, check, check, PLEASE. Both times I've been in this place they've played some gawd awful bougie sinatra(esque) music from an era that nobody in the room can really relate to - it's sleepy sad stuff, really. A song, or two cool, but for hours. Also, it's too loud to think and most people that were there are trying to work. Otherwise, decent coffee, food and atmosphere is nice. More recently, the barista with short red hair, side berns and a rat tail is rude and unwelcoming.

Keri N.

Yelp
Very cute restaurant with DELICIOUS hot chocolate! Also enjoyed the bagels. Yum! It was a little hard to find, but keep looking. It's worth it!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
The vegan pizza for two is ON POINT. Fantastic thick crust, perfect amount of creaminess & spice. Nice staff, good space. Interested in trying out a sandwich there, though honestly I'll probably order the pizza every time because it was that good.

Ken C.

Yelp
Went yesterday for the first time around noon and had the Buckman breakfast sandwich, add bacon, and a Crux IPA. The sandwich was great. The relish is very unique and tasty. I asked if the roof top was open and they said it was not. No ETA on when that is going to occur. Once it does, I think Martha's is going to be a very busy place with people grabbing beers and enjoying the overlook of the city.

Melanie R.

Yelp
works for a bite to eat and drinks before a show at revolution hall.
