I had been to Martin City Brewery twice (once at this location and once in mission farms area) and they were a fun time. Not because of the place itself, but because of the company I was with. We could have gone to McDonalds and had a great time...well, if McDonalds served beer.
When you don't have friends to distract you, you have more time to concentrate on the things such as quality of food, service and price.
I stopped by on a Saturday night and got a 8 inch pizza with three toppings and a beer. IT cost me $28 with tax and tip.
I will say this, the experience is much different if you are alone, than if you are with a group of friends.
The atmosphere is a mix of older people and families, making it more of a restaurant than a bar like setting. The bar was about 60% full but the restaurant was completely full.
First, the service was mediocre at best. It was the bare minimum, a short greeting, a taking of order and then no followup until they asked me if I wanted the bill. I noticed it was the same across the board. Even a customer, who sat next to me, who seemed to know the bartenders didn't get much better service. When you share less than 30 words with your bartender and about 15 seconds of face time, you're not going to be impressed with the service.
Secondly, the pizza was not good. It is a thin crust pizza that had no flavor other than being very hot. When your main flavor is adding red-chili flakes, it's going to be a problem. It also had the look of a frozen pizza, there was no char on the crust, the tomato sauce was flavorless, the toppings were fresh but nothing to write home about. The biggest disappointment, other than the frozen pizza quality crust, was the prosciutto I ordered. A good prosciutto should have a fatty, salty taste to it. Here is tasted just any other meat.
I could have forgiven it if it was reasonably price, but this 8 inch pizza was $15! It looked slightly better than a $2 Walmart Great Value personal pizza. Even at 8 inches, I could only eat half of it. I am really hoping that the pizza tastes better cold, cause it is sitting in my fridge as I write this.
The one thing that kept this at 2 stars is their beer. I like their beer and often order it in other local bars when available. I should have paid $7 for the pint and popped in that frozen 'za I had purchased from Trader Joe's earlier in the day.
It looked like people who came with their SO, family or friends were having a good time, mainly because they were with people they wanted to hang out with. Me, I'll come again if my friends drag me here, but I won't come back alone.
