11 Great Things to Do in Lisbon with Kids

"Ask anyone who’s been to Lisbon with kids and they’ll tell you to check out Martinhal, a mini-chain of luxury hotels and resorts across Portugal that bakes “kid-friendly” into its DNA. The Chiado location in Lisbon is a five-star experience without having to push past pomp and circumstance to get to your room. Studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments are colorfully decorated (bold prints in jewel tones) but practical, with a fully stocked kitchen (stove, dishwasher, etc), washer-dryer, and bunk beds for the kids. Better still is the kids’ club, for ages 6 months to early teens, that offers babysitting services and pajama parties; a “baby concierge” that will supply baby cots, bottle warmers, baths and potties on request; and a cool cafe with a car parked indoors that kids can scramble in while you kick back a coffee." - Laura Dannen Redman

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado, Chiado, Lisbon, Portugal - Explore & Book

"We’d never thought of Lisbon as a particularly family-focused destination – we thought its cool, arty vibe better suited to an adult weekend away. But that was before Martinhal opened a hotel here. And as soon as we clocked its location in vibrant Chiado (pedestrianised areas, friendly restaurants), saw their gorgeous family-friendly studios and apartments and all their classic childcare ingredients, we knew it would be fabulous. Martinhal's previous opening, in Sagres, ticks all the boxes for superb family holidays, and Lisbon has way more to offer locally. Our toddler grinned from ear to ear while riding the trams and running around the ramparts of Castelo São Jorge. And all three of us loved the history (and custard tarts) at Bélem. When the sun shone, we headed for sandy beaches and Monsanto, where there's a giant playground and public outdoor pool. On rainy days, we’d visit the puppet museum and Europe's biggest aquarium. The hotel's brilliant kids club has everything from playmats to PlayStations, plus creative activities, story hours, even an indoor climbing wall. Every member of staff was exceptionally kind to our son, so much so that he didn’t want to leave (he still takes the cuddly fox from his welcome goody bag to bed every night). So give everyone a holiday – treat your children to an afternoon of supervised fun while you indulge at museums and hip boutiques, or let them loose at an evening 'pyjama party' while you check out the bars and gastro-restaurants nearby. Win win. Highs 37 beautifully decorated and spacious studios (31-42sqm) or apartments with 1-2 bedrooms, all with kitchens Exceptionally kind staff (even kind enough to provide breakfast boxes as we had to leave at 5am) For kids: imaginative play areas, space to run around, cool bedrooms, kid-friendly meals, activities nearby For parents: space to relax, stylish décor, cultural sights and family restaurants you can walk to, superlative childcare, great sound-proofing, good security features, equipment to borrow, and a cool gin bar on site Excellent location close to Lisbon's main sights; the Time Out Market is 5 mins' walk away Lows No formal restaurant in the hotel, just a café for breakfast and light meals, but the neighbourhood teems with eateries No pool or spa Bathrooms were looking a little dated on our last visit Kingsize beds are two beds pushed together Most apartments only have one bathroom, and they aren't especially large" - Anna Mullinder

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Family Suites (Lisbon, Portugal) 6 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Martinhal is best known for its hotel in Sagres, with its timber-wrapped modernist villas. You might not guess from the photos, but it’s an extraordinarily family-friendly hotel. So when the same group opens another hotel with “family suites” in its name, you can take them at their word. Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Family Suites is just what it sounds like: a townhouse hotel in Lisbon’s Chiado district whose 37 suites are eminently well-suited to families traveling with children, right down to the Tintin artwork in the kids’ bedrooms." - Tablet Hotels

The best hotel in all of Lisbon if you're staying with young kids or a young family! The hotel is totally family-oriented and goes to every length to be accommodating. The neighborhood is phenomenal and close walk to many great restaurants and sights to see in the area. Two large play areas for the kids -- one supervised by hotel staff and one not. This was the best reprieve after a long travel day and we arrived early in the day before check-in time, so our room was not ready yet. The kids stayed entertained and we were able to relax without worrying about the kids until we got into our room. The hotel has nice full-sized strollers that you can borrow for no charge that aided us in navigating the cobblestone streets without having to lug our own stroller across the Atlantic Ocean. Service: All staff we interacted with were top-notch and nothing but accommodating to all needs. We were greeted with small backpacks for the kids with a stuffed animal that they loved. We were given help with all of our stuff up to the room. Breakfast is included and the staff was attentive. You do reserve a time for breakfast to ensure a table is available, but you can also schedule room service with the same full buffet menu and omelet/egg options available.

This hotel was fantastic. They upgraded our room so our teens would be more comfortable. The apartment was roomy and well equipped, very clean and the air conditioning felt wonderful. Can’t do much better regarding location…. So much within walking distance! The staff were wonderfully welcoming and kind and the option of breakfast in the restaurant or room was so nice. Admittedly, I am picky about accommodations and if traveling with family - would go back here again and again. Wonderful property!

Went here with a family of 8. Kids club was so great for the kids, with so many activities daily! The hotel was so beautiful and spacious. We got two rooms and that was perfect for us. The breakfast food is yum, I loved the omelettes! The staff were very helpful and kind to our family! Highly recommend!

When planning our trip to Portugal, Martinhal was high on my list of family-friendly places to stay. The hotel tends to sell out quickly, especially during the summer break, so we felt lucky to snag a reservation—even if it was just for a day and a half. We arrived early in the morning (around 8 a.m.) and were able to do a paid early check-in. Since the room we originally booked wasn’t available yet, the hotel kindly upgraded us at no extra cost. We stayed in a spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment that included a king bed, two twin beds, a bunk bed, a full kitchen, and even a washer and dryer—super helpful when traveling with kids or packing light. The apartment was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the whole place truly felt like a home away from home. The staff were exceptionally kind and welcoming throughout our stay. The location is also excellent—centrally located and within walking distance of everything we needed. A sweet touch: the housekeeping team gave us delicious homemade cookies that our kids devoured immediately. Our children (ages 4 and 10) loved the beautifully set-up kids’ room. The hotel also offers babysitting services and themed activities, which is great for longer stays. While we didn’t use this service, the staff in the kids’ area were warm and engaging. Breakfast at the hotel requires a reservation but is included with your stay. The food was excellent, with a wide variety of options and accommodations for dietary needs. Again, the service was top-notch. We had hoped to stay again on our way back through Portugal, but unfortunately, the hotel was fully booked. That said, I’m so glad Martinhal was our first stop—it really set the tone for a wonderful trip. Highly recommend!

We stayed here in June and were genuinely pleasantly surprised by how thoughtful and family-friendly everything was. Our room had a separate kitchen with a door—such a luxury when traveling with a little one! The fridge was already stocked with milk and fresh fruit, and there was even a washing machine, which came in super handy.||What really stood out was how welcoming they were to our toddler. He was given a sweet little welcome bag filled with toys upon arrival, and the room was equipped with a toddler-sized towel and flip-flops—such thoughtful touches! Our absolute favorite keepsake was the bright yellow Martinel hat they gave him; he wore it the entire trip around Portugal and got compliments everywhere we went.||Every interaction with the hotel staff was lovely—from the friendly and attentive breakfast team (the breakfast was delicious!) to the amazing kids club. We also used the babysitting service a couple of times and had Rafael, who was fantastic. She was kind, trustworthy, and great with our son—we highly recommend her if you’re in need of a sitter during your stay.||All in all, this hotel went above and beyond to make our stay special and stress-free. Highly recommended for families traveling with young kids!

Perfect stay at the hotel from start to finish: warm, competent, available, professional, and flexible staff. A fantastic kids club where you can leave your children while enjoying one (or several) romantic getaways, plus a family play area as well-equipped as a proper daycare. The breakfast buffet is amazing (crepes, pancakes, pastéis, scrambled or creative-style eggs, fruit salads, fresh juices…), and of course, a perfectly designed apartment with a separate bedroom (that can be closed off) from the rest of the space. The hotel is very well located. All in all, we had a truly wonderful holiday!!!

This hotel is perfect for families with young kids. The rooms are great size, the staff is incredibly accommodating, and the kids club could not have been more perfect for my 3- and 5-year-old daughters. Being able to pair a couple of evenings at the kids' club with a babysitter (provided through the hotel) for my 1-year-old son was the perfect solution for my wife and I to be able to enjoy a few date nights without the kids. We will certainly be staying at another Martinhal hotel the next time we are in Portugal. Fingers crossed they open more Martinhal Hotels/Resorts in other countries soon!

We had a wonderful stay at Martinhal Chiado! Traveling with two young kids (ages 4 and 5), the Kids Club and staff were truly exceptional—our children actually said it was the highlight of the entire trip. The team was warm, engaging, and made the experience incredibly special for them (and easy for us!). We took advantage of enjoying some nice meals while the kids were taken care of. I was very anxious about leaving the kids initially, but once we met the caretakers and saw how at ease my kids were, I had great peace of mind. My typically wary daughter had such a great time she asked to stay when I picked her up. ||Our room was very spacious and had everything we needed as a family, which made settling in so simple. The location is excellent for exploring Lisbon, with plenty of restaurants and sights nearby.||We did forget to make a reservation for breakfast one morning, and although they were able to accommodate us, it was clear it would’ve been easier for everyone if we’d booked ahead—something to keep in mind. That said, for our early flight on departure day, they thoughtfully packed us a breakfast to go, which we really appreciated.||Overall, Martinhal Chiado is a fantastic choice for families with young kids—comfortable, well-equipped, and genuinely welcoming.

Yelp
If you're planning on doing a family trip to Lisbon, this is the hotel to stay at! This is a hotel with families in mind. The hotel staff are extremely friendly and kid-oriented. In the lobby, there's also a Kids Club that offers daycare at all times of the day; the staff there were really good at making the kids comfortable. We were assigned room 002, which was the size of a small apartment, with a bedroom that had a king size bed and bunk beds situated in the family room. I know bunk beds can be nerve wracking with little kids, but the hotel had bumpers installed for safe sleeping. Location wise, you're in the heart of the city with lots of restaurants and shops within close walking distance. It'd be hard not to recommend this hotel, unless you are traveling with no kids or on a business trip.

Yelp
Stay here! Families with toddlers and babies! Stay here! The staff is amazing and they have babysitting services for shifts - 9:30-11:30 and 4:30-6:30! Then there is adhoc services which we will be taking advantage of we we hit a fado! The rooms are so comfortable and centrally located to all of the amazing restaurants and transport hubs!!! It is insane how close things are to us and they are a cab ride away which is actually cheaper than the trams ;). So stay here and take advantage of the amazing services for family restaurant bookings ... they have the best recommendations!! And they come there too!!

Yelp
Wow! This is a Hotel? We stayed in a "2 bed suite" Trust me this is not a suite, this is is a stunning huge apartment with impeccable decor, furniture and fittings. It feels more like home than well... Home. It's a beautiful old character building in a wonderful location. With that in mind, there is a tad more noise from the floorboards above than a modern building. However such was the delight of staying in such a wonderful apartment it was a total non issue. The kitchen is really nice and superbly equipped with why seemed to be brand new high end utensils. It had a washing machine/ dryer and a nice dishwasher too. The living room was super bright with 3 big French doors w shutters onto a narrow wrap around balcony. The views?? Just gorgeous onto the river, Christ statue and the 25 Abril "golden gate bridge" Of course what this hotel brand concept is based around is 5 Star luxury but centered around families (not just the kids or the adults... both aspects) and that is shown in the second bedroom has 4 bunk beds that fold into the wall. High end quality beds that are very safe. The sheets seem to be Egyptian cotton high thread jobbies throughout. The bathrooms have 2 rain showers, marble and a very comfortable tub in the master. The location is just really to die for, 2 minutes to river and the train station to Cascais, and 7 minutes to the Baixa arch. Hundreds of cool bars, restaurants and shops around in trendy hip Chiado. The staff are reserved but very warm and friendly for the most part, which is reflective of Portugal's low key and very unassuming warmth in general. Amazing place... I wish them the very best success.

Yelp
We loved this hotel, and our kids REALLY loved it. There's a kids club where you can casually drop your kids off during regular waking hours. For other hours there are babysitters available. Our suite struck the right balance between kid-friendly and tasteful for grown-ups. Rita did an excellent job of making our whole family feel welcome. Highly recommend Martinhal!

Yelp
Wonderful stay in this extremely kid friendly hotel. Our room had baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs (1 bedroom loft style apartment), baby high chair, crib, and even a toddler stool in the bathroom! Quiet, clean and modern rooms with full kitchens. Also have kid friendly menus at the cafe downstairs and daycare services provided. They also have a kid play room that's open to use. Location is in the old town short walk to the water or the shops.
