11 Great Things to Do in Lisbon with Kids

"Ask anyone who’s been to Lisbon with kids and they’ll tell you to check out Martinhal, a mini-chain of luxury hotels and resorts across Portugal that bakes “kid-friendly” into its DNA. The Chiado location in Lisbon is a five-star experience without having to push past pomp and circumstance to get to your room. Studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments are colorfully decorated (bold prints in jewel tones) but practical, with a fully stocked kitchen (stove, dishwasher, etc), washer-dryer, and bunk beds for the kids. Better still is the kids’ club, for ages 6 months to early teens, that offers babysitting services and pajama parties; a “baby concierge” that will supply baby cots, bottle warmers, baths and potties on request; and a cool cafe with a car parked indoors that kids can scramble in while you kick back a coffee." - Laura Dannen Redman

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado, Chiado, Lisbon, Portugal - Explore & Book

"We’d never thought of Lisbon as a particularly family-focused destination – we thought its cool, arty vibe better suited to an adult weekend away. But that was before Martinhal opened a hotel here. And as soon as we clocked its location in vibrant Chiado (pedestrianised areas, friendly restaurants), saw their gorgeous family-friendly studios and apartments and all their classic childcare ingredients, we knew it would be fabulous. Martinhal's previous opening, in Sagres, ticks all the boxes for superb family holidays, and Lisbon has way more to offer locally. Our toddler grinned from ear to ear while riding the trams and running around the ramparts of Castelo São Jorge. And all three of us loved the history (and custard tarts) at Bélem. When the sun shone, we headed for sandy beaches and Monsanto, where there's a giant playground and public outdoor pool. On rainy days, we’d visit the puppet museum and Europe's biggest aquarium. The hotel's brilliant kids club has everything from playmats to PlayStations, plus creative activities, story hours, even an indoor climbing wall. Every member of staff was exceptionally kind to our son, so much so that he didn’t want to leave (he still takes the cuddly fox from his welcome goody bag to bed every night). So give everyone a holiday – treat your children to an afternoon of supervised fun while you indulge at museums and hip boutiques, or let them loose at an evening 'pyjama party' while you check out the bars and gastro-restaurants nearby. Win win. Highs 37 beautifully decorated and spacious studios (31-42sqm) or apartments with 1-2 bedrooms, all with kitchens Exceptionally kind staff (even kind enough to provide breakfast boxes as we had to leave at 5am) For kids: imaginative play areas, space to run around, cool bedrooms, kid-friendly meals, activities nearby For parents: space to relax, stylish décor, cultural sights and family restaurants you can walk to, superlative childcare, great sound-proofing, good security features, equipment to borrow, and a cool gin bar on site Excellent location close to Lisbon's main sights; the Time Out Market is 5 mins' walk away Lows No formal restaurant in the hotel, just a café for breakfast and light meals, but the neighbourhood teems with eateries No pool or spa Bathrooms were looking a little dated on our last visit Kingsize beds are two beds pushed together Most apartments only have one bathroom, and they aren't especially large" - Anna Mullinder

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Family Suites (Lisbon, Portugal) 6 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Martinhal is best known for its hotel in Sagres, with its timber-wrapped modernist villas. You might not guess from the photos, but it’s an extraordinarily family-friendly hotel. So when the same group opens another hotel with “family suites” in its name, you can take them at their word. Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Family Suites is just what it sounds like: a townhouse hotel in Lisbon’s Chiado district whose 37 suites are eminently well-suited to families traveling with children, right down to the Tintin artwork in the kids’ bedrooms." - Tablet Hotels

We had such a wonderful stay. This hotel makes travel with little ones so easy. Our kids are 3.5 and 6. They had such a fun time at the kids club at night and we also utilized the private babysitting (thanks Johanna!). They think of all the little things that make travel easier (step stools in bathroom, stocked fridge and fresh fruit, child size bathrobes and flip flops). We also enjoyed the complimentary breakfast each morning. The hotel itself is in such a central area, making it so easy to walk around or grab an uber. I can't recommend highly enough. The only negative is this hotel line doesn't seem to operate outside Portugal.

One of the worse 5 stars hotels ever stayed in1) room smell sour/acidic (maybe from carpet)2) never refill the body wash and shampoo bottles (stayed for 4 nights) in a premium one bedroom apartment with two extra single beds, so for four people staying there3) we asked for the vacuum so we could vacuum the carpeted floors ourselves, feeling very dusty as we entered4) the washroom was poorly designed where the toilet seat was at the right end of the shower tub and the water from shower head sprinkled all over the toilet and the toilet paper because it was a half open glass door5) the toilet paper had no good place to put and was always wet 6) the toilet flush was broken too. On the good side, the front desk staffs Victoria were helpful and friendly. The breakfast server Mimi were very cheerful and greet us daily, they were so busy but kept a good attitude. The kitchen in our room was well maintained; we were also happy to see the laundry machine there. At this cost(540 USD/night) I would carefully reconsider staying here again.

Great hotel and so family friendly! The kids club is awesome. I love that it feels quiet and safe. we stayed here 3 nights and had an enjoyable time ||the location is perfect. we walked to time out market every night. It was easy to walk by to the near sights and areas as well||I highly recommend this hotel to anyone and especially with families that have young children. It made us feel like we were truly on a vacation! ||Thanks so much to the staff!

Google
This was the best hotel experience we have ever had as a family. 2 young boys, 3 and 5, and the staff made us feel at home. The breakfast each morning was fantastic and very convenient before exploring Lisbon. The area of the hotel is exceptional, a quick walk to many restaurants and to transit to other parts of the city. We will be back.

What a wonderful experience! From the minute we arrived, to the minute we left, we were treated so wonderfully by the Martinhal staff! We traveled from Hawaii to Lisbon over Christmas with our three children, and Martinhal was our first stop. Upon arriving, we were greeted warmly and our children were ushered into the kids club while we filled out paperwork. They even had backpacks filled with toys waiting for them. My 7 year old was given a backpack for older kids, but was sad that she did not receive a stuffed animal in her bag like her little sister, and the staff immediately gave her a second backpack, complete with stuffed animal, and let her keep the first bag. Our room already had a baby cot set up upon arrival, with additional baby amenities waiting for us. It took 30 hours for us to travel to Portugal from Hawaii, and it was so amazing to have the room ready to go as soon as arrived so everyone could take a nap. The room was very spacious with a kitchen for cooking and some supplies already stocked in the fridge, and free flip flops for everyone in the family (even the baby). The location was wonderful with plenty of places within walking distance nearby. Breakfast was also amazing, with a wide variety of food, fruits, cheeses, breads, sparkling wine, eggs, bacon, custom-made omelets, etc. We used the kids disco for a date night for our oldest two, and also used the free babysitting service during the day. We also used a nanny for our 6 month old for a date night, and she was wonderful. Our baby went right to sleep with her, and was asleep when we arrived home. My only regret is that we did not spend more of our trip at Martinhal. We will always remember this trip and hope we can find a way back soon!

The Martinhal is a fantastic boutique-style hotel in a great location, especially for families. From the moment we checked in, it was clear they truly think about traveling with kids — fresh milk waiting in the room, potty seats available, and even in-unit laundry if you need it (which, with kids, you probably will). The kids club on the first floor was such a standout. Our 4-year-old loved having a place to play and have fun, which made it easy for us to enjoy the city without feeling rushed or stressed. It struck the perfect balance of being family-friendly without feeling chaotic. They also had a small welcome gift for kids at check-in, which instantly made our son feel special and excited for the stay — a small touch that went a long way. We’d absolutely stay here again and would love to explore their other properties in the future. A really thoughtful, effortless family stay.

Google
They advertise themselves as a family hotel, however the free play area was extremely messy and dirty. Since families are allowed to enter the area together, it seems there is no proper supervision or maintenance at all. The daycare/kids club area requires an extra fee, and unfortunately my daughter constantly wanted to play there with the other children but was not allowed inside. Most importantly, the staff working in the daycare were extremely inattentive and rude. They were constantly on their phones, scrolling through TikTok and Instagram, barely paying attention to the children. They were not engaged at all and did not even look at the kids properly, which is very concerning in a childcare environment. At breakfast, the coffee was extremely poor — the coffee machines urgently need cleaning. That said, the waiters and room service staff were very kind and polite. We would like to thank only the waiters and room service team. Overall, the children’s play area was below average.

Google
We had a Lovely Stay at this hotel! We have visited Portugal before, and never knew this hotel existed, but will stay here every time we visit now due to the excellent service we received and the amazing kids club that they offer! The Manager (I believe his name was David) was so friendly and accommodating to absolutely anything we needed. He went above and beyond for us…. Not only allowing us to check in early, but upgrading our room when the room we had booked would not be ready quickly. What service!! The hotel is in a great location and the apartment was well appointed and clean. The only thing that I think should be noted about this apartment/hotel, is to keep in mind that this is a very old building, which means the floors are very squeaky and creaky, and they pop a lot. The walls are also very thin so you will hear your neighbors. We expect this when traveling so it didn’t bother us, but I’ll admit it was hard getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and trying to do so quietly on the loud floors. Overall we highly recommend this hotel for families traveling with young children!

Yelp
If you're planning on doing a family trip to Lisbon, this is the hotel to stay at! This is a hotel with families in mind. The hotel staff are extremely friendly and kid-oriented. In the lobby, there's also a Kids Club that offers daycare at all times of the day; the staff there were really good at making the kids comfortable. We were assigned room 002, which was the size of a small apartment, with a bedroom that had a king size bed and bunk beds situated in the family room. I know bunk beds can be nerve wracking with little kids, but the hotel had bumpers installed for safe sleeping. Location wise, you're in the heart of the city with lots of restaurants and shops within close walking distance. It'd be hard not to recommend this hotel, unless you are traveling with no kids or on a business trip.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing place to stay. Staff was awesome, breakfast was good and as you can expect. The staff there was great. If you have young kids this is the place. The rooms were very spacious and they had a crib waiting for us. I will stay here again if I find myself here in Lisbon. Yelp
Stay here! Families with toddlers and babies! Stay here! The staff is amazing and they have babysitting services for shifts - 9:30-11:30 and 4:30-6:30! Then there is adhoc services which we will be taking advantage of we we hit a fado! The rooms are so comfortable and centrally located to all of the amazing restaurants and transport hubs!!! It is insane how close things are to us and they are a cab ride away which is actually cheaper than the trams ;). So stay here and take advantage of the amazing services for family restaurant bookings ... they have the best recommendations!! And they come there too!!

Yelp
Wow! This is a Hotel? We stayed in a "2 bed suite" Trust me this is not a suite, this is is a stunning huge apartment with impeccable decor, furniture and fittings. It feels more like home than well... Home. It's a beautiful old character building in a wonderful location. With that in mind, there is a tad more noise from the floorboards above than a modern building. However such was the delight of staying in such a wonderful apartment it was a total non issue. The kitchen is really nice and superbly equipped with why seemed to be brand new high end utensils. It had a washing machine/ dryer and a nice dishwasher too. The living room was super bright with 3 big French doors w shutters onto a narrow wrap around balcony. The views?? Just gorgeous onto the river, Christ statue and the 25 Abril "golden gate bridge" Of course what this hotel brand concept is based around is 5 Star luxury but centered around families (not just the kids or the adults... both aspects) and that is shown in the second bedroom has 4 bunk beds that fold into the wall. High end quality beds that are very safe. The sheets seem to be Egyptian cotton high thread jobbies throughout. The bathrooms have 2 rain showers, marble and a very comfortable tub in the master. The location is just really to die for, 2 minutes to river and the train station to Cascais, and 7 minutes to the Baixa arch. Hundreds of cool bars, restaurants and shops around in trendy hip Chiado. The staff are reserved but very warm and friendly for the most part, which is reflective of Portugal's low key and very unassuming warmth in general. Amazing place... I wish them the very best success.

Yelp
We loved this hotel, and our kids REALLY loved it. There's a kids club where you can casually drop your kids off during regular waking hours. For other hours there are babysitters available. Our suite struck the right balance between kid-friendly and tasteful for grown-ups. Rita did an excellent job of making our whole family feel welcome. Highly recommend Martinhal!

Yelp
Wonderful stay in this extremely kid friendly hotel. Our room had baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs (1 bedroom loft style apartment), baby high chair, crib, and even a toddler stool in the bathroom! Quiet, clean and modern rooms with full kitchens. Also have kid friendly menus at the cafe downstairs and daycare services provided. They also have a kid play room that's open to use. Location is in the old town short walk to the water or the shops.
