Aggro-Tourism: 12 Hotels for Blowing Off Steam

"All four pools at Martinhal welcome pint-sized swimmers, with beanbags by the poolside when it’s time to get out of the water. The resort has a huge list of leisure activities on offer, both on land and sea, and nearly everything that’s available for adults to try, is available for children as well." - Mark Fedeli

Villas Martinhal Sagres, Sagres, Portugal - Explore & Book

"It goes without saying that we're big fans of independent villas. So why do we have a Portuguese resort of over 100 houses and villas on our site? It’s simple: these are done so well that we couldn’t resist adding them to our portfolio. Designed with the same sleek lines, eco-concerns and modern style as Hotel Martinhal Sagres, and sharing the same facilities, these contemporary villas completely redefine your expectations of the Algarve by being family-friendly yet genuinely stylish. So many things make holidaying here a delight. The villas are well set up for self-catering, with indoor and outdoor tables, and all the kit - even juicers and blenders. But if you want a break from cooking, there are 3 stylish restaurants within walking distance – a casual Italian, a stylish seafood-focused eatery, and a formal restaurant. They're all family friendly – or book a babysitter and dine out a deux. And then there are all the other facilities... 5 heated swimming pools, tennis courts, a football academy, a spa – plus a gorgeous sandy beach a mere stroll away. There's a crèche and various kids' clubs, even screenings of cartoons in the Village Square on summer evenings. We couldn't believe how genuinely relaxing – and easy – a holiday here was. Highs A range of villa options, to suit all budgets. Some have their own pool, others are set within a private walled garden The wildly beautiful natural setting: tall grasses and masses of bright, beautiful flowers. We loved that the grounds didn't feel too manicured Gorgeous interiors – a mix of Portuguese materials (local stone, cork), contemporary furniture, luxury gadgets and funky extras (wicker lamps, Mongolian beanbags) Everyone here has kids, so you don't feel self-conscious if yours bomb in the pool/act up/won't eat their dinner in a restaurant! Active types will be in their element: hike through the national park; windsurf and surf; try deep-sea fishing Lows Keep an eye on the extras – meals, spa treatments and activities quickly add up, though the villas themselves are good value It can be very windy in the summer months, especially on the beach, but this detracts from the fierce sun Service is mixed: some staff are brilliant, we found others frustratingly laid-back, especially in the Oz Gambozinos restaurant Stylish and low-rise though the resort is, it all feels a bit suburban (and not very i-escape), but the upside is a wealth of facilities" - Kate Parsons

Hotel Martinhal Sagres, Sagres, Portugal - Explore & Book

"Martinhal Sagres is like no other hotel on the Algarve. Forget golf, forget overdeveloped land and rammed beaches. This tasteful designer temple sits within the protected Costa Vicentina national park on the cliffy western rather than flat southern coast - in fact, on the very bottom left-hand corner of Portugal, sticking out into the Atlantic. The location is fabulously unspoilt, wild and rugged - a rather bold setting for such a stunning contemporary hotel. But it works: this is a magical combination of luxury and nature. There are 37 chic rooms, some in the main building, others in a cluster of private wood-clad blocks beside it, all with views of the impossibly blue ocean. Surrounding them are dozens of self-catering villas for 4-6, some with private pools (see our separate review). The resort has 3 excellent restaurants serving variations on Portuguese food, 4 beautiful swimming pools surrounded by teak decking and lime-green bean bags, and a spa with sea-inspired treatments. Everything is contemporary in style, with a thoughtfulness, flair for design and eye for detail in an authentic, thoroughly modern, Portuguese setting. Highs A paradise for kids, with several play areas, imaginative kids clubs, 4 heated pools and activities for every age group, including a sweet fairy-door trail But ticks all the parent boxes, too! A spa for those in need of pampering, activities for all including windsurfing, cycling and deep-sea fishing; or just lie in the sunThe biggest breakfast buffet imaginable - we loved the fresh detox juices and creamy scrambled eggs with coriander and chivesGorgeous interiors - a mix of Portuguese materials (local Monchique stone, cork from nearby forests) and funky extras (iPod docks, Mongolian beanbags)Even though the resort was almost full when we stayed, it really didn't feel crowded. There's masses of space and a calm vibe Lows Part of a resort, with dozens of villas sprinkled about. Stylish and low-rise though they are, it feels a bit suburban (and not very i-escape), but the upside is a wealth of facilities, including tennis courtsYou need to book the restaurants in advance in the eveningsService is mixed - staff are lovely, but often too laid-back; our waiter couldn't tell us anything about the winesGiven the exposed location it can be very windy, so not ideal for beach sunbathing, and the surrounding land is bleak in places" - Belinda Archer

Martinhal Sagres Family Resort (Sagres, Algarve) 7 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"You keep thinking there’s no way the Algarve coast can keep dazzling, but it just keeps going, beach after unspoiled beach, eating up a whopping two hundred kilometers of southern Portugal. That’s plenty of space for every kind of hotel to host the millions of sun-seekers that descend upon the beaches during the summer. It makes perfect sense, then, for a place like Martinhal Beach Resort and Hotel to contain multitudes; an ambitious offering of varied guest-room styles with the facilities and amenities of a massive luxury resort, and a place particularly well-suited to families traveling with young children." - Tablet Hotels

This resort is simply spectacular, and absolutely worth the visit! It really is geared towards kids, and our son absolutely loved everything from the pool, to the ocean, the playgrounds, and the mascots. The food was great, our apartment was clean and well maintained, and the view and sound of the ocean from the balcony can’t be beat! We stayed here after a busy week of touring in Lisbon, and it was just what we needed to unwind before heading home.

From start to finish this resort delivered everything and more. ||We stayed in an Ocean View Villa /Apartment and it was modern, clean and well kept. ||The staff were exceptional and the level of customer service is high. We loved the My Martinal website - which should be standard for any resort. It allows you to book everything from your phone and you have direct access to their concierge via WhatsApp. It's very convenient. ||The facilities are superb. We thoroughly enjoyed the padel courts and the mini golf. The gym is small but functional and we also enjoyed the choice of the pools. The SPA is a nice quiet spot if you fancy some me time or enjoy meditation. The beach is also lovely with pods and sun loungers in a plot reserved for hotel guests. ||The resort is designed for young famalies but our teens still found lots to do from the gym, bike station through to the blue room - which offered a pool table, ping pong to an arcade and PS5. ||The restaurants and bars were all good but slightly overpriced. However, we still enjoyed the food and the service was great. The staff can't do enough for you. ||Although there were a lot of young children, there is so much space here that you won't notice it. Even in peak season, when we visited, you'll only notice the main pool is busy. The other pools and facilities were quiet most of the time. ||Highly recommended for families but especially those with younger children.

Overall a very nice family resort with 3 restaurants on site serving a variety of food, lots of food options for kids and babies. Good size villas and plenty of swimming pools. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Negatives are there is no night time entertainment for adults or kids, kids clubs are 25 euros per child per half day, bathrooms in villas need updating with worn tiles and luke warm water in showers at all times of day. Recommend booking half board directly with hotel as children under 9 will then eat free.

+ Great family friendly resort||+ Using half board we enjoyed a wide variety of dishes across the 3 restaurants, not going half board would have been a lot more expensive.||+ Garden houses have huge private garden||+ Great area for cycling, the bikes are from musette bikes. Book in advance to get the bike you want/need.||+ Kids club was great and the coloring stations in the restaurants were a success too. Be sure to book in advance.||+ We were slightly before the true high season but it never felt too busy anywhere in the resort during our stay||+ Just a few steps from the resort takes you hiking along the dramatic coastal cliffs.||- The oasis pool is adult only, although mentioned on the site it came as a surprise to us and small disappointment when staying in one of the garden houses||- Don't expect too much from the town of Sagres but nearby Lagos is also good for exploring.||- Avoid the local intermarche as the prices are so inflated you might as well just shop in the Martinhal convenience store||- The bikes for small kids (14") are too heavy for young kids in combination with some of the small hills around the resort||||Our holiday wasn't cheap but neither was the experience.

Beautiful resort with everything that a young family needs. Would highly recommend. We had some very windy days, which I think is probably very normal for the location, but worth packing a few hoodies/warmer tops for the evenings.

Just back from a 7 night stay. We stayed in a 3 bedroom garden house. The house itself was very outdated. No 5 star toiletries included that you would expect in the bathrooms. Just the basic shampoo and conditioner. Every restaurant for all meals had to be booked days in advance especially if you wanted to dine in the As Dunas restaurant. This is very inconvenient when you have young families as things can change on the day. One of the mornings that I booked breakfast I got an email to say they couldn’t fulfil my reservation even though I had a booking confirmation 3 days prior. Whilst the hotel offers a kids clubs (all additional cost) there is no evening entertainment which is very disappointing. On a positive note the staff were extremely friendly and the food was very good. For the price of this hotel for me it definitely wasn’t worth it and absolutely not a 5 star resort.

We absolutely LOVED Martinhal Sagres. I travelled with my husband and three children (7,5 and 1) and it was the best family holiday we have ever been on. It manages to combine an amazing holiday for children, with luxury/good food etc. for parents. That is so rare as usually places which are great for kids can be tacky or the food may not be nice etc. Martinhal has managed to do both perfectly.||For the kids, the Kids Club was great, all three went to the relevant groups. I had only signed up for two afternoons but my daughter begged me to book her into another session as she loved it so much! Both my son and daughter had two swimming lessons each, with lovely, enthusiastic instructors. We enjoyed spending time at all three pools and the kids just loved the main playground in the square and the trampolines. It was great that even our 1 year old could wander round the playground safely while we watched him from our table. My daughter loved having a mummy daughter massage in the spa as well! We went to a family football hour also which was enjoyed by all. ||For my husband and me, we thought the food was great ( O Terraco and As Dunas the best food, Oz Gambizonos not as good, but the pizza was fab), the adult only pool lovely, the spa was great also. The accommodation also great, we had a 3 bed Ocean House so lots of space, and me and my husband could relax on the balcony after the children went to bed. ||We did half board, breakfast was wonderful and the dinners were great and then we just bought sandwiches etc from the lovely market shop for lunch. ||Lastly, the staff were wonderful. They were really understated, but nothing was a problem, everything on time, no complaints whatsoever. Airport transfers were great and room cleaned daily.||We cannot fault Martinhal. We understand why so many people love it and return year after year. We will certainly be returning next year.

Of all the amazing places we stayed in different parts of Portugal we sure had high hopes for this one. This was by far the most expensive and we opted for a villa because of the private pool and our multigenerational family stay that required a larger space. ||The villa we stayed in listed it had AC but it was only in the main living area. There was no AC in the bedrooms and I had to ask twice for a fan in order to sleep comfortably. We had no hot water for 3 of the 4 days. The key to secure the back door where anyone could walk up from the public beach didn’t work. ||Martinhal Sagres is very tailored to tourists. No Portuguese people here which may be great for some but to us it did not feel like Portugal especially with the prices and the tipping expectations. ||I tried to get something back given all the issues but the manager (Rui) said to leave a review of the issues so the owners fix them. I explained that they allow the private owners to rent to their clients so I was offered 50% off my invoice which consisted of 2 breakfasts and kids clubs for total reimbursement of $196. We ended up going off site or cooking our meals because prices are very inflated on the resort and food was good but not great. While the resort is clean, well-kept and the staff overall was kind and courteous, it was our most expensive stay in Portugal and likely would not return.
