On the Grid : Martin's BBQ

"Martins has long been at the top of the best BBQ in town debate. In Nashville, pig is king, and nobody smokes one better than Martins. You'll likely see a line out the door, but it’s well worth the wait. What you won’t see is a freezer or a microwave, because they cook everything fresh. They’ll even open up the smoker and show you the whole hog… just be sure to ask real nice. (Photography by Justin Chesney)" - Peck & Company

We ordered a tray of brisket and a patty burger with the farmer’s salad. The food was delicious. I really enjoyed the flavor, though my son thought it was a bit too flavorful. We both agreed the cheese was outstanding—surprisingly unique and far better than typical store-bought varieties. As for the brisket, while it was good, I’ve had much better in Chicago. We dined at one of their locations that had ample parking and a peaceful atmosphere. The interior isn’t fancy—more of an old-school setup with simple wood and metal tables and chairs. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Overall, highly recommended.

Google
You have to line up and order at the counter (there’s only one), then take a seat and your food will be brought to your table. The ribs were good, but the sides weren’t great. There aren’t many drink options either. I’d recommend it to try once, but I wouldn’t go back.

Google
Awesome BBQ spot. Had to get some in Nashville and Martin's did not disappoint. Everything we ate was delicious. My favourites were the ribs which just fell off the bone, as well as the mac and cheese which was delicious. Tons of seating available in the joint, you line up to place your order, take your seat and the food is brought to you. Place also had cheap beers too which was nice. The house BBQ sauce is delicious but is a bit runny. One of the guys in our group liked it so much he got a bottle to take home.

Google
The food was great. We had the pulled pork and the brisket. For the sides, we had baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. Brisket was super tender. The potato salad was not my favorite, but the rest was excellent. My wife has celiac and was able to have a great gluten-free meal with no cross contamination. Not all of the sauces are gluten-free, so make sure to ask.

We came to this location after trying to visit another location on a Friday night because the previous location didn’t have anything left. The staff were so friendly and helpful, they have a full bar with some strong drinks. We got some brisket, chicken, sausage, pulled pork, they ran out of ribs. For sides we got cornbread pancake, broccoli, mac and cheese. I really Liked the broccoli. We also got the pecan pie and the fudge pie. We devoured our meal and there was plenty of seating. This spot is in more of a residential area so less touristy.

Google
Delicious food and it came out really quickly. The ribs were delicious, the burger was amazing, the brisket was great. I'm from PA and have never been to Nashville and this was a great spot I went alone and spent $50 on myself getting everything. Tired of tipping culture though. I had to stand in line and order my food. There shouldn't be any prompts for a tip unless there is table service, just pay a living wage.

Google
This is our second time at Martin’s and it was just as delicious as our first time here. We got dry rub ribs and brisket, green beans and broccoli salad for sides. The ribs and brisket were flavorful, moist and cooked to perfection! Broccoli salad was good too. Great atmosphere - friendly, relaxed and comfortable.

Google
I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but I was really disappointed with the food here today. Visiting from Ireland, I did a lot of research to find a good barbecue spot in Nashville, so I felt compelled to share my experience. We ordered the pulled pork burger with fries and the half smoked roast chicken with mac and cheese. Unfortunately, both the pulled pork and the chicken were extremely dry. The mac and cheese had a strange, scrambled egg-like texture, and the pulled pork somehow managed to be both dry and greasy at the same time. The fries were crispy and had potential, but they were served cold. As for the barbecue sauce, it was very runny and had a strong vinegary flavor—not to my taste.

Yelp
Delicious BBQ and great staff! It was our first time in so the server brought us all the sauces to try. By far the best Alabama white I've ever had and the other sauces were stellar as well. Brisket and pulled pork flavorful an tender. Baked beans so good and after eating the green beans drank the juice it was soooo good. Go to BBQ spot for us. Easy parking at the side of restaurant so Melrose/belmont location is great.

Yelp
Big brother plate is a great move for two people and I'm stuffed. Huge portion of rib. A slab of meat and bones on your plate. It was so tasty you didn't need any sauce. Baked beans were fine. Broccoli salad as well. Mac and cheese my friends said fine too. So the sides are just ok. The meat is definitely the best thing here. Huge portions. Love the interior and art all over the walls. Nice service that was positive and chatty.

Yelp
Martin's is an institution in Nashville. If you're visiting the Music City, you must eat their Q. The Redneck Taco - pulled pork on a cornbread hoecake - was great! Great casual atmosphere with even better food!
google avatar

Johnny N.

Yelp
Done w em. Ordered a chicken red neck taco. The piece of cornbread had 2" of slaw under and tiny bits of dark meat chicken. Like the chicken that winds up in scrap heap when they are selling the 1/4 and 1/2 chicken plates. Hushpuppies were crusty dry balls. Used to be good. But to hit or miss these days. Prices are insane for what you get at half the time lol. Posting pic of what was under the slaw. Litttle giblets of I guess chicken.

Yelp
Based off a recommendation from a friend I tried Martin's. I don't know if it's the location or just that it was late at night around 7:00 p.m. but the place was not very busy. It had cute decorations and was clean . The staff was also very friendly and nice . I ordered the brisket platter and was a little surprised to see how very small amount of brisket was served and slide of green beans was drowning in the liquid. For the cost of the platter and the amount received I would not recommend it. The brisket was okay not the best I've had before. The food was served lukewarm. I ordered some chicken wings which were nicely seasoned not too heavy and was not hot or spicy. The best part of the meal was the kids chicken tenders . I was starving so the food did it's job.

Yelp
The service was fast and friendly. I will be back. The food was flavorful and it was a lot given. Everything was explained when I asked questions. It smells great when you walk in. Nashville has not failed me yet. Just don't get the giant wings unless you like big chicken :)
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food, excellent service, and fun atmosphere. Ordered the pulled pork and brisket combo that came with two sides. The hush puppies were delicious. The pulled pork and brisket came with a sweet barbecue sauce that went perfect with both meats. Both the brisket and the pulled pork were very tender and full of flavor. Great place to go. There are tables outside where you can eat as well. This place is the definite must if you're visiting the area.

Yelp
Came to Martin's Bar-B-Que after hearing it had some of the best BBQ in Nashville. I ordered the Pulled Pork Shoulder Sandwich with Mac and Cheese and my friend ordered the Pulled Pork Shoulder Tray with Broccoli Salad and Fries. Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this BBQ considering it's so highly reviewed and rated. I found the Pulled Pork to be tender and juicy but it lacked flavor/sauce. I doused it in their sauce but it kind of tasted like straight up vinegar? The sides were also nothing crazy special. I have nothing great to say about them. TBH wouldn't recommend this place; if you want good BBQ, I'd say you can do better elsewhere.

Yelp
Went to Martin's bar- b- que. I had the half slab of ribs. My wife had the pulled pork. The pork ribs are sandwich were cold. My wife's pork was dry she said the best part of her meal was the Mac and cheese. My ribs were well seasoned and the sauce was tasty. The beer selection was awesome. I had the Nashville amber and my wife had the maple brown ale The home made chips absolutely rocked. The ambiance was very down home country. We were served very quickly both the meal and the beers. Would like to give more stars except for the cold entrees.

Yelp
Great location- easy to order at counter- staff very nice and knowledge - great menu items to choose from- loved the smell of hickory smoke walking in. Order 18 Smoked wings - they were overcooked but good, great sausage and pulled pork. Chicken was perfect- overall Top 5 BBQ in Nashville. Not my #1 or 2 but in Top 5. Recommend and I will be back...
google avatar

Yelp
I gotta say...this place has so good baked beans, pulled pork, and chicken. The smoke rings on everything was so apparent and the taste was amazing on everything. The only thing that made them lose a star was the sausage. I'm not sure if I just got a bad sausage, but it was really gross and over-peppery. The chicken and the baked beans were definitely make favorite part of the meal. The servers were nice and helped me pick out this meal, and were really honest with what they did and did not like on the menu so I could get the best possible plate. And lastly, the ambiance was cool! It's like a restaurant mixed with an old-timey wester saloon feel. The smoke aroma floods the dining area which I'm not mad about haha! 8/10 guys, keep it up!

Yelp
First food stop in Nashville and it did not disappoint! Thanks to the driver that my aunt and uncle-in law met on their Uber ride. The driver recommended Martin's, but specifically the Belmont location. I think it may be because it's the OG location. We went for lunch as soon as they opened as BBQ spots tend to sell out early and fast, especially if it is as good as people say it is! The place was already filling up! - Parking - Center lot next to Martin's, belonging to the H.G. Hill Realty Company Shopping Center. Free with 2 hour limit. - Vibe - Super spacious with different wings on both sides. Seemed like an extension they may have built and is more like an enclosed porch. A little warmer on those sides, but they have fans blaring. You walk up to the counter, pay, they give you a number and they will bring the food to you. - TLC - The girl at the cash register was super nice, polite and very helpful. The guy who brought our order turned out to be the same. - Noms - I love trying as little bit of as much as I can! My husband and I chose the following: *6 smoked wings - ordered hot. Great flavor with an amazing sauce. Topped with jalapeño for some extra heat. *Big Brother sampler - comes with brisket and ribs on a bed of 2 slices of white bread and comes with choice of 2 sides. We chose baked beans and mac & cheese. The brisket was cooked well, with the accordion effect, but would have liked a tiny bit more moisture. Nothing the BBQ sauce couldn't fix though. The ribs were also flavorful and fall-off-the-bone delicious! The baked beans were really nice and smoky and delicious! The mac and cheese to be was just fine. Martin's has a ton of merch for sale, including the founder's cookbook, rubs, sauces and spice tins. First BBQ joing I've seen with their own branded moist towelettes, and I'm not talking the small little square packet. This is quality. Loved that and came in very handy after handling my meat like it was running away! Also, Martin's offers a military discount with presentation of valid ID. Thank you, Martin's! Never expected, but always appreciated! Martin's set the bar high for all the good eats we were expecting to eat in the Music City! It was one of the best! Stay safe, Friends!

Yelp
Great food, amazing service! Ambiance is laid back. What sold the experience for me and my husband were the great wait staff and personable cashier.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited on 7/7/24. The best part of the experience was the vinegar BBQ sauce on the table - absolutely delicious! Aside from that, the food was exceedingly average. The ribs were pretty dry; I got half sauced and half dry-rubbed and I highly recommend the former - the moisture and stickiness was needed (although the dry rib flavor was good). The hush puppies were solid, but nothing special, the baked beans didn't feel like much of anything had been done to them (I'd have believed you if you told me they were straight from a can; this doesn't mean they tasted bad - I love canned baked beans - but I expected more from a place like this), and the green beans were pretty watery. The atmosphere was nice, the service was solid, and while a little warmer than I'd like, the fans created a nice breeze.

Yelp
Last time coming here.. this place continuously is a let down. Ordered the chicken strips for my kid & got home to chicken bites.. Sick of places advertising for one thing but you end up getting something different. If you sell chicken bites call it that, don't make someone think they're getting something they're not. Also didn't get my drink or the sauce it comes with it. Food is bland and this is probably the 3rd time they've gotten the order wrong. Won't be coming here again. Save yourself the trouble & go to Edley's BBQ one street over! Much tastier bbq & they get your order right. Picture of their "chicken tender" in post.

Yelp
Five star every time! The sauces alone are amazing! I especially like the Alabama White Sauce and The Devils Nectar. Nice and spicy! And don't forget to grab a rub!!! I came in on my last day in Nashville only a wee bit hungry, so I ordered the brisket sandwich with a side of mac and cheese and a local ale to drink. Mac was smooth and creamy. And, as always, meat was perfectly smoked to a superb tenderness. No fat and so fresh! The menu has so many options. Why limit yourself?

Yelp
Continues to be a awesomeness brisket burger the onions are plentiful better not kiss anyone lol the service Continues to be great as well

Yelp
After years of hearing nothing but raving reviews, I've finally tried Martin's, and I have to say - this place totally lives up to the hype! Our group tried the pulled pork, the brisket, and the BBQ nachos. Every single dish was amazing! They have an awesome variety of sauces that perfectly complement the BBQ. I don't know if we visited on a slower day or if the service is always so speedy, but our food was ready so fast we barely had a chance to sit down! Not only was the service fast, but every team member we interacted with went above and beyond to make our experience great. TLDR; At Martin's, the BBQ is smoked to perfection, the sweet tea is refreshing, and the service is outstanding!!
google avatar

Amit M.

Yelp
BBQ joint in the south. Food is great. Tried both brisket and pork shoulder. The pecan pie is an absolute must. Only downside is they don't really have much variety of BBQ dipping sauces.

Susan H.

Yelp
Solid barbecue . Had pulled pork and coleslaw with a side of broccoli. I'm not a southerner, but I don't think it was the best I have had. But it was good. We were traveling and this was a convenient stop. You order at a counter and food is brought to you. Service was good.

Yelp
Dropped by Martin's for an office lunch. They gave tables for big parties and a ton of seating, so I definitely recommended if you have a large group. They have limited parking spaces in the back and street parking available. For my main dish, I got pork bbq sandwich with a side of potato salad. The potato salad does contain eggs so just a heads up for my vegetarian friends. The pork was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. I loved the slaw the sandwich was topped with. I wasn't the biggest fan of the standard bbq sauce but luckily I got a sauce sample. My favorite was the spicy one! These are vinegar based bbq sauces so they will be a little different than other bbq shops. I'm not sure that I'm the biggest fan of vinegar based bbq, but I can tell they make everything with love and precision. I wish the potatoes were a little less boiled and soft in my salad, but otherwise, the flavor was nice. The staff were helpful and kind. I had a great experience here.

Yelp
We did a Nashville BBQ tasting, the 2 well known ones. Martins and Edleys. We went to Martins first and Edleys second (same day) in 12south area. First impression of Martins- more like a traditional bbq place. Order at the front, local feel to it. Not at all fancy, lots of seating, wasn't busy. We ordered the pork ribs, half with sauce and other half just dry rub. The dry rub was better than with sauce. They also have a sauce Guy that makes different sauces. Their hottest sauce was good but it wasn't hot. They even put a lid over it. Lol. Free moon pies! Super cool.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
The pulled pork was a very off putting texture and flavor and the brisket was very fatty and more like roast beef than brisket. We couldn't get the attention of any waiter and when we finally did she never returned to the table so we waved and waved until finally someone else came and brought us half a glass of ice for our overly warm not so sweet tea. Place has what you'd expect from any cheap food place in Nashville. Posters of country music type decor and uncomfortable chairs. We definitely won't be eating the food we got let alone coming back
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Went with our college son and all of his room mates. It was a great space for a large group. Only draw back was lack of air conditioning. Had some fans and some portable air, but it was hot. It did give me a chance to have several cold beers from a very good selection. We had brisket, pork, ribs, fries, green beans, Mac n cheese, and it was all great. We would all go back. Service was great. Manager was out front and he was very helpful.
google avatar

Maggie M.

Yelp
Um, wow. This place is everything you want in a bbq place. Great food, great atmosphere, and the staff were so incredibly nice. The food came out quick and was delicious. My husband and I arrived later in the evening and I was worried (having never been here before) that maybe some items would be sold out, but they still had their full menu. Ribs were amazing, pulled pork and brisket were absolutely solid. So we're the sides that we had- beans, broccoli salad, and Mac and cheese. Pecan pie was one of the best that I've ever had- it wasn't overly sweet like most pecan pies. Loved this place and would go back in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
This was the best BBQ we had in Nashville on our trip! There were plenty of sauce options and the meat was all falling apart it was so tender! The woman taking our order was very helpful to answer all our questions and to pick out the best food options! We left so full and so happy!
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
If you are a fan of BBQ food and are on Nashville go check out Martins. All their meats are excellent but their beef brisket is so tender it crumbles off of your fork. The sides are an added bonus to an already delicious meal. I loved every bite.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Got the full rack of ribs and it was HUGE. It could easily feed three people, especially since it comes with three sides. We did half dry and half wet rub. They also have a variety of different BBQ sauces to go with it but we had to ask for it. For sides we tried the broccoli salad, the cornbread hoecake, hush puppies and Mac and cheese. Ribs. Soo tender and fall off the bone. Both the wet and dry rub were good. The sauces were a hot one, normal sauce, vinegar base, and a fruity one. I think I liked the vinegar one the best since it really helped cut the fattiness of the ribs. Cornbread hoecake. Pretty much a cornbread pancake but not sweet at all. Different than I was expecting. Didn't love it but it wasn't bad. Broccoli salad. Good components but it was drowning in mayo and was really sweet. It comes with pecans, cheese, craisins. Hush puppies. AMAZING. I love hush puppies and this might have been some of the best I've had. Good flavor and the texture was perfectly light and fluffy. Mac and cheese. Not good. Not great. You order at the counter and they bring out your food. They have indoor seating only I believe but during warmer weather the sides of the building open up. Lots of space to sit though.

Madelyn A.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was good. It was loud inside tho. Pecan pie was fire I recommend pulled pork.

Yelp
I have to say that I was very disappointed in the meat quality at Martin's. I will say that I'm quite picky about my ribs, but I thought the ribs left a lot to be desired. I did like the dry rub - and liked the spicy wet sauce that I asked on the side - but the ribs itself - felt a little dry/bland to me. My husband got the brisket burger, and he didn't think it was anything special. I did get the broccoli salad and fries as my sides and I liked the sides better than the main entrée. Overall - a disappointment and I will not be returning.

Josh K.

Yelp
We have had Martins several times and it has been great, however, following our recent experience; unfortunately, we cannot go back. Both my wife and daughter had found hair, only discovering after biting into their food, which was appalling. Upon reaching out to the restaurant, they were apologetic but it shouldn't happen with two separate meals in an order, it was gross...

Yelp
Alright, it's clear to me that lotta these reviews are from either losers or cretins so i'll cut the crap and tell you how it is. I'll try and keep it short. 1. I didn't get BBQ, what do i look like? A Texan? No, i'm sure it's good. Any brisket is a good brisket. 2. I came here for One thing & one thing only.....thats the fried catfish... Lemme just say, *and i won't name names* but for the small 16 & some change you get a 6 LB takeout container (NOT like some other places offering up their very well acclaimed catfish.) This is def the most bang for your buck. 3 crispy as all hell fire fillets(more like strips but not the point) a mound of delicious fries(not crispy but like mama used to make) and 2 absolutely banging hushpuppies. Now, i have almost no complaints, but damn would it kill ya to up the white bread? It was cardboard man. The thing that i love the most is to pick up that greasy cheap wonder bread at the end. Don't try to impress me with some daves killer, high roller slices yous are putting in there. And another thing. If you're gonna charge me 25cents for an extra comeback sauce (albeit delicious) it better not get forgotten about in my little takeout container. In fact, that extra cents is for you not to forget my extra sauce. 9.4/10 *wouldve been a 9.7 if you hadn't forgot the extra sauce.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
I'm not a BBQ fan. The best BBQ ever. This is a must stop. The rib meat just fell off the bone. The brisket was amazing. I don't get hush puppies, but my friends liked thought they were good. Sauces were really good! DO IT!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
The service is awesome the staff really goes above and beyond. The food is amazing BBQ is the best I've had in Nashville and I've had quite a bit of Bbq The prices are reasonable so I would definitely recommend martins

Steve W.

Yelp
Mediocre at best. Smoked Turkey was much better than the brisket, which lacked flavor. The smoke was perfect but there must have been no rub. The sauce was watery and awful. So much for a dining institution! The Scoreboard out near Opryland has this beat all to heck!
google avatar

Janelle T.

Yelp
This was a new but familiar place as there are barbecue places like this is in St. Louis. You come in and order from the display menu at counter and find a table and wait for your food. My order was aspirational, I couldn't decide what all I wanted and inevitability had to take some home but what I did eat at the restaurant was great. Nice cuts of meat and a interesting side of sauces. I was hoping for more variety of sauces at the table as well as having something less liquidity and more of a thicker consistency as I was dipping my selection of meats. But I ate well there and it made me more curious about more of the barbecue that Nashville has to offer.

Yelp
The service was so fast! We ordered for pick up and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. They even made sure to give us some sauces! Don't miss out on trying that Alabama White sauce!! I tried the 1/4 bbq chicken and it was super juicy and flavorful! Loved the broccoli salad as a side. Have to get that again. Also tried the Mac and it was a hit. My son tried the Big brother combo and loved it! So much food. Definitely get the dry rub. Definitely would recommend this Martin's as a go to BBQ in Nashville!!

Yelp
Came here on a foodie tour so didn't get to try a lot or big portions but what I did have was delish. Tried the spare ribs, brisket and hush puppy. The staff was very friendly and service was fast.

Yelp
First time stopping by today. The place is in a nice area. I had no trouble finding parking, but it was not packed inside, so be mindful of that. I got the brisket BBQ tray with mac & cheese and baked beans. The wait was short. However, the food was decent at best. The brisket itself was almost grey looking with not much flavor on its own. When paired with the bqq sauce it comes with, it was a bit better. I will say that it was tender, and my toddler ate some as well. The sides were good, but nothing special.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
So my wife and I are always in the hunt for top notch BBQ and being in Nashville on vacation this was a no-brainer endeavor. Martin's did not disappoint... far from it! First, the service was great. We were met at the register, where you first order, by an energetic, helpful and friendly young man. We found a table on the outdoor patio and our food soon followed. So- the ribs- are literally the best dry rub ribs we've ever had. I smoke my own ribs at home, and I'm feeling rather inadequate after having them at Martin's. The bark was perfect! The fat that rendered into the meet is nothing short of perfect. The staff remained friendly and helpful during our entire visit, checking on us regularly. This is a MUST visit establishment. I only wish I lived closer-- well maybe not, I'd be 45 pounds heavier if I did (LOL)

Martin's barbecue close to Vanderbilt University is a fun and lightning barbecue joint. I enjoyed their chicken tenders and their stuffed baked potato with pork. Both were very good and very filling for the size of the offering. I found the bar in the atmosphere around the bar to be fun and spirited, especially on game days at Vanderbilt University, I can't wait for my next trip back to Martin's.

Yelp
The food was amazing! When the food came out I ordered bbq nachos (delicious) on the side they added a cup of queso to pour on the nachos that is amazing service. It is so clean for a bbq joint.

Yelp
Definitely top 5 BBQ I've ever had in my life! The staff was absolutely amazing and so helpful with everything. The manager came by to see how everything was and let us know everything is cooked in house with wholesome ingredients and you can tell. For food we had the big brother sampler that comes with 2 sides. The food came so fast and we decided we need more food because it was so good so we also got a 1/2 rack of ribs that did not disappoint! We finished the meal with Pecan pie that was so good we all closed our eyes and chewed as we relished in deliciousness of it all. If you have time and want some amazing BBQ this is the place to go!

Yelp
Martin's has great food and service! My family and I go there whenever we are in Nashville and between all of us, we have ate majority of the menu items and loved everything! I highly recommend Martin's to anyone looking for a good BBQ spot- their sides are also delicious.

Yelp
Martin's in Nashville has 6 locations in the city. They are highly rated for a reason, absolutely delicious and seasoned to perfection. Customer service was on point, bathroom clean, plenty of space for dining in and outdoor. Covid precautions are in place. Lots of parking at this location. Serving size is a nice portion for amt paid. Highly recommend a stop for a taste of "Q"! I will definitely be a frequent flyer.

Yelp
We were visiting Nashville for the first time and liked Martin's so much that we went back a second time. Our favorites were the spare ribs, brisket, and smoked turkey. Great value!

Yelp
Best BBQ and fun atmosphere. Can't go wrong. Favorite's are brisket tacos, cheeseburger, and pulled pork sandwich. But it's all good!
