The 38 Best Restaurants in Toronto, Canada | Eater

"Since 2009, this restaurant with a fast-casual counter has sent thousands of famed Portuguese chickens out the door each week. Owned by Carlos Martins and managed by his three sons — including Le Cordon Bleu graduate chef Steven Martins — this spot has all the hallmarks of a family-owned restaurant operation. The Martins take care to source ingredients (including fresh fish and seafood) directly from Portugal, and papa Carlos makes the rounds glad-handing and toasting with guests like a local celebrity. While the sit-down restaurant offers old-world charm, head to the counter side, where 20 hot trays are ever in rotation. Try the butterflied Portuguese chicken with piri piri sauce (a secret family recipe), creamy potato spheres, whole grilled sea bass, creamed cod, veal cutlet, and the coveted suckling pig. Know before you go: If you’re hankering for a more sit-down experience, an adjacent restaurant offers a more refined yet lively vibe." - Tiffany Leigh

Google
Delicious Portuguese Chicken, can't believe I've never been here before it's really good, Always looking for great Churasco, as many have closed down. Best for take out as only a few tables and pretty hot inside. Love the Parisienne potatoes and the sauce $15 for 1/4 chicken meal.

Google
First time ordering from here. Got the quarter chicken dinner and was impressed with how flavourful everything was. The rice and potatoes were perfectly cooked and the chicken was juicy and tasty!

Google
Tasty chicken as expected from a Martin :) Portuguese know how to cook a chicken… and pork …and other tasty foods. You can be sure to have a winner every time you bring their food to cater a lunch.

First time trying Martin's- driven by many times. When you walk in, there's chicken on rotisserie, dripping over a fire. But that's not the chicken you get, served instead from a drawer under the counter where I suppose it's kept warm. It wasn't. 7 min ride home, chicken was luke warm, and the grilled veggies were lacking flavour. Potatoes were good :) The hot sauce was a savior, and the Natas are crispy and delicious - and they make this donut-like dessert sprinkled with sugar with some citrus zest that is absolutely satisfying. Prices are very reasonable, and the portions are generous. I'd come back for the desserts, but not likely for the chicken.

Absolutely delicious! We ordered takeout for my daughters 1st birthday and it fed 15+ with lots of leftovers! The whole family loved it. My daughter absolutely devoured her dish and loved her leftovers. Thank you!

Google
Everything tastes good, but the chicken was dry, despite having the sauce on it. That may be because we did take out and it took an hour to get home. Also bought a bottle of sauce for extra at home, but it doesn't matter how hard you shake it, it just doesn't emulsify.

Google
Seafood rice was one of the best we have tasted and would order again. We didn’t expect the portions to be big. Food was flavourful and we all left feeling full. Servers were very kind and patient. Food came at a reasonable time.

Google
This is considered a full chicken. Absolute rip off. Flavor was nothing to write home about. Never again

Yelp
Ambiance? A few chairs and tables inside of you're ravenous and can't wait to eat delicious food. The inside reminds me of a deli with lots of food behind glass. Service was prompt and the staff explained what the items were. Martin's cuisine can best be described as Mediterranean with a strong Portuguese accent. The star of the show is definitely the char grilled chicken. We ordered a family meal for 2-3 which came with a whole chicken cut into 8 pieces, and two large containers of potato balls (so yummy) and seasoned rice (not so spicy Spanish rice pilaf). The food was plenty for our group of 4 since we supplemented the meal with bubble teas. The grilled chicken was perfectly grilled but still moist. I wish the pieces were a bit larger. The seasoned rice was OK (needed more seasoning and veggies), but the potato balls were divine and plentiful. There was a parking lot for about 5 cars getting takeout on this busy narrow street. Getting a space and vacating that could be quite a challenge during rush hour. 4 stars for being a tasty affordable carryout choice.

Yelp
Everything is fantastic at this restaurant but expect the price to match the quality. Servers are pleasant and ambiance is nice and loud.

Yelp
I was at the Rogers location. We made reservations and where seated outside on a separate area from the main area. The area is horrible, not a good experience to sit in a place that looks worst than your kitchen!! No human touch. There was one waitress serving 3 tables and I can honestly say, the service was horrible. She was never around. We even had to go inside and look for her to ask for some containers and the bill!!!! Apart of that....stay away from the expensive calamary. They where so rubbery, like when is an old product. The rates are very expensive for such a crappy experience!!!!

Yelp
Seafood restaurant serving over cooked, very salty seafood?! Made a comment to the server, she said she would pass the comment on. No one came, no one cared. Did not order desert or coffee and left. Total disappointment. We can't go out that often and wasted a night out here! Told a Portuguese friend and they laughed. Don't go there, there are much better places!

Yelp
A Portuguese BBQ chicken with a side of rice and mini potatoes is our go-to family meal when we're too busy to cook or have a lot on the go! I usually order from Bairrada on St. Clair West but they were so busy on a Saturday night that they put me on hold and never came back to take my order! My brother recommended Martins as he had ordered from there previously. They were quick to answer the phone so Martins it was! I ordered two chickens with a large side of potato and rice for pick up. The food was ready to go when I arrived. I noticed that the large potato was more of a medium so I ordered a second when I arrived for pick up. The chicken was super tender and tasty. The hot sauce they provided was divine...Literally wanted to shoot it out of the little plastic cup into my mouth! Martin's pricing is slightly more than Bairrada but I wouldn't hesitate to go back...requesting extra sauce next time!

Yelp
I love a good bacalhau a bras, a traditional Portuguese dish made from shreds of salted cod, onions, thinly chopped potatoes, all bound with scrambled eggs and garnished with black olives. I was looking for a good place on the west end and came across Martins Churrasqueira. In the time of COVID, they offer take out options, ranging from Portuguese roast chicken, cod (bacalhau a bras, da d'avo, a gomes de sa, a lagareiro), meat (leitao, carne de porco a alentejana, bitoque, etc.), starters and more. I ordered bacalhau a bras for one person. The serving size was good value for the price. The texture and flavor were not as expected, unfortunately; there are better places in the city for this dish. I also tried their snacks, which were good. Bolo bacalhau (cod cake) was nice, good flavor and texture. Rissol camarao (shrimp patty) had good flavor, but not much filling. Rissol leitao (suckling pig patty) was moist and had a distinct flavor (beer?). Rissol carne (meat patty) had good amount of filling and strong black pepper flavor. The patties would be better if the crust was thicker and richer. Tip: if you ever go to to Porto, don't miss the Rissol de carne, cogumelos e trufa at Brasao; they are heavenly! Service was good. Limited parking available on the premises. The area is served by TTC 79 Scarlet Rd and TTC 189 Stockyards. TLDR; food could improve, good service

Yelp
Great spot for Portuguese chicken. Definitely the best place I've had so far. The skin was super crispy and the chicken was just great as is. I actually went back to order more! The second time I went I added the sauce but it was a little salty for my tastes so if I were to go again, I would just make sure to put it on the side instead. The dark meat was extra juicy. I got some vegetables on the side which were a little oily but still good. I ordered Portuguese tarts to take home and those were good in the oven. The base of the tart was crispy and the filling was sweet but not overwhelmingly sweet. I would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Brand new and really clean. Was the home of the old 22 Lounge. Now it's a great bbq spot. Portuguese chicken is the specialty but they have whole fish and a few types of pork. It will do a lot of take out business but I have had lunch in the small seating area 3 times so far. All meals were outstanding and the service is very friendly and efficient. The owner is really making an effort and I wish him well. So don't just drive by if you are hungry, it's totally worth a visit !

Yelp
Ordered for for Xmas day... can't tell you how disappointed I am with the food.. lasagna had no sauce... the roasted potatoes looked like a mix of old precooked and newly roasted . The fish fillets were dry and rubbery.. we waited 1 he and 45 minutes after the foods agreed pick up time... we will not order again... maybe they are to high to care about food quality

Yelp
Good food. Sometimes chicken is very salty. Not many parking spots. Overall food is good.

Yelp
Nice clean place. Food is great! Normally when I go to Portuguese chicken place, they give you the whole chicken and you can ask to cut it into how many pieces and cut it infront of you. This place seems different. They gave us 8 small pieces and not the whole chicken for the more $$. Just quite prices than normal. Not much parking spaces outside.

Yelp
Excellent variety of fresh take out food served in a clean, bright spot. Fish of the day is amazing as is the tender roasted suckling pig. Everything looked so delicious and hard to choose what to try. Will certainly go back again. Fresh salads and interesting variety of Portuguese style dishes professionally prepared and very tasty. Prices are very reasonable for quality of food. Very friendly and helpful servers. Finish with a tasty dessert and aromatic espresso coffee.

Yelp
I honestly love their food, personally haven't been to the location but my dad gets take out twice a week and we have basically had everything on the menu from fish to chicken and even sausages. Basically everything is done perfect, nothing too salty or poorly cooked. Definitely deserve a great review, no this is not a paid promotion but I will accept free food

Yelp
if you like your chicken dry, this is the place to go.

Matt S.

Yelp
Chicken was fantastic, make sure to order the spicy sauce, and do live on the wild side by getting the roasted eggplant and peppers. There were swordfish, cutlets, and brisket parmesan too - just ask because the only sign in the place was in chalk and largely in portuguese. So nice to have a Portuguese place that makes more than just chicken, potato, and rice.
