The Best Sushi Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"A newer addition to downtown, chef “Maru” Maruyama’s Cortez Hill omakase hideaway features a two-hour experience with 20 courses priced at $180. The concept of omotenashi, or the art of hospitality, mindfulness, and outstanding service, are at the center of this sushiya as diners have been fond of the staff’s attentive nature and welcoming energy. The omakase begins with appetizers and ends with soup and dessert — a handful of nigiri take up a few courses in between, along with a warm dish, and followed by even more nigiri." - Roxana Becerril

Seafood, Coconut Curries, and Lots of Fried Snacks Await in Sri Lanka | Eater

"Located inside UNESCO-listed Galle Fort, the kitchen blends Mexican and Japanese techniques with Sri Lankan influences—think tuna poke bowls dressed in soy infused with nai miris (a fiery local chile) and nori tacos topped with grilled prawns—an inventive fusion that still foregrounds island flavors." - Zinara Rathnayake

I seriously can’t see how this place has any negative reviews! I’ve been coming here for so many years and have literally never had a bad experience. I always get AYCE when I come here because it’s just SO worth it! This is the only place I come to time and time again for sushi because it’s just simply the best hands down out of anywhere I’ve tried in both Orange County and LA county thus far. I live in LA county now, and STILL make the drive to Maru when I’m craving sushi! The best Miso soup, always so flavorful and salty in the best way. Rolls are immaculate and always perfect temperature and filled to perfection! I can only assume anyone saying it was just “okay” don’t actually know what good sushi tastes like lol. I said what I said. The staff are all the kindest most attentive crew ever! This place has a piece of my heart! 🍣 ♥️

Google
I tried the eat all you can, but I didn’t try most of the food. But service is fantastic, and the sushi is very good. But when i order (chicken popcorn) without sauce. (Because im not a really sweet person, the sauce is sweet) It doesn’t really good. No taste at all. But the rest is fine.. It’s still very good experience. Definitely to try more again 🫶

Google
The service wasn't great. It wasn't busy and you'll be waiting a long time for the sushi to come out. Also we had two pieces of sushi left and were told that we'd be charged a fee if we didn't finish it. The most frustrating thing is that our orders would be randomly substituted by random things so we weren't getting what we ordered. We didn't order the crabmeat and I showed it to the server but we were still told if we don't finish what we didn't order, we'd be charged a fee! The menu itself was average and the quality of sushi was slightly below average for the price. Also kids ages 3-12 are charged $19.99 which I think is overpriced for a 3 year old child. Definitely not coming back.

Great sushi 👌🏼🤩 my favs are Philly rolls and the fish to rice ratio is perfect

Google
This place is a joke. None of the fish is fresh. Just ask the chef. all the fish is frozen or farm they freeze then slice into nigiri slices then freeze it again until they need it so you can have fish that has been there for over two weeks. They pre make all their rolls so you can have a temperature shrimp or spicy tuna roll that’s been setting for hours. Doubled check your items cause you can easily get spoil food and they will play it off like it’s nothing or say you’re picky. You can arrive an hour before closing and the head chef will just cut off your order and tell new customer their close. And the head Chef leaving his dentures in a cup out there in the open is crazy.

My friend and I decided to try this place out for lunch since we were short on time. We are glad we made the visit. We did 3 rounds of food. This place will charge you if you leave any extra rice on your plate, so we were careful on how much we ordered. We ordered heavy during the first 2 rounds and less on the 3rd round. We had some sushi as well as some no rice options and sake. My fave were the mackerel, salmon skin salad, baked crawfish, tamago, shrimp boat and TNT. I didn't like the summer roll, albacore onion, and yellowtail. If I ever come in a big group, we would do the other options that come with more pieces. Overall, we enjoyed this place very much. Free parking is plentiful in their lot.

Google
Honestly really good sushi , you can try a lot of rolls without having to commit to eating 8 pieces per roll , very fresh and great taste ! I would recommend coming and I will definitely come again 👍

Google
All was good, except the Princess roll...it has a weird flavor that gave me nausea, and I wasn't able to eat after that. I'll avoid it next time 😊

Yelp
This is a regular lunch spot for us and never disappoints! I've been coming in for 8-10 years now and qualify has been consistent. They are very generous with the serving of fish and it always tastes clean and fresh! The rolls are tasty and creative, tempura is delish, even the miso soup is perfect. Staff is friendly and courteous. Try the AYCE and see if you make it to the third round!! We never seem to get that far!

Yelp
They have a long list and big selection of 50% off sushi. But a few things were annoying. - no description of rolls when looking at the paper menu. Just the names of the rolls. So don't know what ingredients it consists of. - veggie roll came in 5 pieces. In general, they usually come with about 8-10 pieces. Got less food than expected - the veggie ingredients inside and seaweed paper had the problem of falling apart. Because the chef rolled it too LOOSE. Should've used the bamboo mat to make the filling, tighter and more dense, more closely together. Instead of everything falling apart when I go pick it up. Very annoying. The chef was mexican. Got the basics but needs more training & improvements. - didn't see any pickled burdock / gobo root. This adds a nice crunch and it's healthy. Sad to see it missing. Most sushi restaurants use this ingredient in their veggie rolls. At this restaurant, they used lettuce, avocado, carrot, cucumber. Might come back later to try other items. I was excited to try this place out but ended up a disappointment.

Yelp
One of my favorite AYCE sushi spots whenever I'm in the OC! A family friend told me about this place, and I always love coming back! There is parking in a shared complex. My favorite is their week day lunch menu! I love getting their udon soup with a side of sushi. For AYCE, my family loves to get nigiri! We always order a lot. They never disappoint! The salmon nigiri always tastes so good! I also like the hand rolls! You can definitely tell this is a family business because of how friendly everyone is! They always greet and check on us. The pleasant environment! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Maru sushi strikes again with a terrific all you can eat sushi experience! This place has been a go to of mine for years and for good reason. The quality of the sushi is great. You want rolls? You got it. You want nigiri? Say less! My favorite was the salmon nigiri and baked rolls but everything was fantastic! Service was also really good. Servers were attentive and never missed a beat. Food came out in a timely manner as well. Plenty of parking outside as it is located in a large strip mall. Restaurant was nice and clean. Would definitely keep coming back!

Yelp
Maru Sushi is located in a large strip mall and has lots of available parking spaces. We went on a Tuesday evening and were able to park right in front of the entrance. It was kind of slow and there were only three or four tables occupied including ours. I would say this is more of a basic sushi restaurant as they don't have a lot of what I would call premium items that my normal sushi place does. We had various nigiri, hand rolls, a few cut rolls, and some shrimp tempura. Everything was good and none of the fish was fishy at all. The carpaccio plate went a little overboard on the toppings. Our server was great and I think one of the owners was also keeping an eye on everything. Our orders came out at an ok pace. The preparation area is a little on the smaller side there were only two sushi chefs. If the restaurant was busy, I would suspect things might get a little slow but maybe they have more chefs on the weekend. I would eat here again when in the area, but I will stick to my number one place.

Yelp
This place is a gem and a must try the next time you're in the mood for sushi in Westminister! The sushi and tonkatsu were amazing and paired so well with the ice cold glass of Kirin. The prices are so reasonable and if you are really hungry, they even have an all you can eat option. My family and I will definitely be coming back again soon!

Jessica H.

Yelp
We've come here a bunch of times and food is always great. The miso soup can be salty from time to time but the sashimi and rolls are always taste fresh and delicious. Service was quick. Didn't have to wait long after placing the order. Clean and has music playing in the background, not overly loud. We just ordered a couple items since it was 50% dine in/ to-go.
google avatar

Huy L.

Yelp
Overall everything is good but they forgot my miso soup so I kinda disappointed hope you guys improve on that Not type write review but it a minus for a place this good it took me 35 buck with a bit disappointing lol will give it another shot next month

Yelp
Best sushi in CA. There is no beating this place. I've been coming here for 10+ years. I've tried others in the area and none compare. I now live in murrietta and have tried sushi out there. Nothing compares, when I come back this way for dinner this is always a treat. Only place that was remotely as good was Kiki's back in the late 90's but they've been gone for almost 2 decades. The OG locals know. This is the best sushi in CA that won't cost you a mortgage payment. I stand by that!
google avatar

Yelp
service is good enough, food is good enough. it is not the best, but it is still yummy overall. the water eel skin has some kinda scales on it so i was disappointed about that one. (cuz i love eel)
google avatar

Joyce F.

Yelp
been coming here for years but this time did not do AYCE. picked: mussels, baked crawfish, summer, dynamite. yummy and like the $.99 2nd beer. staff friendly enough.

Yelp
We've been coming to this place for 15-16 yrs. Never disappoints. Fresh food, wonderful service & simple roomy atmosphere. We came for a Valentine's dinner & I slyly wrote on the ala carte menu it was my husbands birthday. They surprised him with w/a delicious dessert! Thank you Maru Sushi!

Yelp
This sushi spot is top notch. It's located off of Goldenwest and McFadden in the same shopping center as Starbucks and Grocery Outlet. They have a great deal on to go orders which gives 20-50% off on all rolls. My order is: Dragon roll, Jalapeño roll, Baked salmon roll, and the Spicy tuna tempora roll. The total bill is less than $50 when ordered to go. The sushi is fresh, and I have eaten there at least 10 times and always have a good experience. I highly recommend this place for high quality sushi that is priced fairly. They also have an all you can eat dining experience that is of great value! The sushi comes in 4 pieces as ordered so that you don't get too full off of the first few rolls ordered.

Natania N.

Yelp
Food was good, eel sauce tasted fruity, but maybe it was just the day. Service was very nice, came by to refill our waters twice. We went on a Thursday so it wasn't very crowded, thus it was not loud. Was so hungry we forgot to take pictures of all of them, but I snapped a photo of my boyfriend's Ninja Roll since it looked so presentable! Not in photo, but we ordered: Salmon Nigiri, Philly Crunch, and Albacore Onion. All pretty good! Finished off with a salmon hand roll which is nicely filled for the price!
google avatar

Yelp
The sushi is alright here especially for how affordable it is. Easy to get takeout for a reasonable price. I wouldn't say it's the best sushi spot ever but it's good for the price. Good for date night or family night. They do offer AYCE. Good service too.
google avatar

Eugene L.

Yelp
They have reasonable prices and good enough quality. Right now there is 50 percent of for rolls, so you can enjoy good amount of great food :)

Sara W.

Yelp
Honestly, this place is trash. Service super slow even when you are the only ones in there. Rolls are super small, salmon is horribly fishy. Got a roll that was so bad I had to spit it out. On The Weekends you pay dinner prices not matter the time. That seems really money hungry to me and downright shady. Paid $90 for gross bunk sushi. 0/10
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
Called in an order. Was ready when I arrived. Nice hostess. Little disappointed that the prices have gone up. I guess that's what's expected.
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Had to literally write this while still in the restaurant waiting for our 2nd round of orders to come out. The restaurant is definitely not busy and I'm here with two other people ready to get a quick dinner. Super disappointed with the slow service. Our first round of orders came out in 15 minutes and we only ordered nigiri, thinking that we can get to our next rounds ASAP. It's been 30 minutes since we placed our order and we're still waiting (just as I wrote that, it came out) The sushi is definitely good sushi, but honestly save your time from coming here. AYCE sushi for $32.95 and barely getting two rounds in?? The wait is seriously not worth it and no one comes to check on us.
google avatar

Rick T.

Yelp
Had the 2 item combo of children teriyaki and Katsu. Started with a miso soup which was not warm enough. The chicken tasted like it was made hours ago and was microwaved before served. The Katsu was like it was fried yesterday. came with a tiny cup of rice. $16.95... no way.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I don't know what anyone is complaining about. I came here for lunch today. $33 for all you can eat sushi? That's a steal. Plus, the sushi I ordered was super fresh and flavorful. The staff was really nice and welcoming. I had some questions about the menu and the staff was really helpful. I left really full and happy. I am a huge sushi fan, and I totally recommend this place. I have zero regrets. I will definitely be back here. P.S. The mango tango roll is amazing! I've never had that combo before. I'm not even a big mango fan, but this was my favorite roll. I can't wait to have it again.

Savanna S.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed. Came here looking for all you can eat sushi, ordered 2 miso soups to start out with, they were extremely salty and lukewarm. I'm not sure how long they were sitting out but they did not just make them. Same with the edamame, they were hard and sort of warm but when you bit into them they were cold. No salt on them either. Maybe they used it all in the miso soups. Sushi was mostly rice, I think they were trying to save the most money they could on each roll by hardly putting anything inside. We spent $80 just for 2 people for food that was barely warm and sushi that was almost all rice. When we went to check out we told them we were not happy with our food and they didn't do anything about it. We will not be coming back.

Rylee E.

Yelp
Favorite place for quick and delicious sushi! The service is incredibly fast and always clean :)

Yelp
Daniel was great service! he was quick. the food was amazing as always!!! and what can I say a they only play great music.

Nicholas M.

Yelp
Fish is fresh we always sit at the bar and eat all you can eat 30-35 and have the giant beer Second beer is only a buck so that's a must!! 2 x a month place to visit min!
google avatar

Randy T.

Yelp
We were walking back to our automobile from shopping at Jon's last night and that was when I saw this store's current promo! I quickly went inside and the owner was a very nice Korean lady. The promotion was *50% off all cut rolls (Sashimi not included).
google avatar

Alexandra C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious sushi! My husband and I love coming here for the ALYCE sushi. The portions are a bit smaller for the ayce menu so you can actually try more of the menu which is a really cool thing. The sushi is great and the prices are very reasonable. We will definitely brew back!
google avatar

Re S.

Yelp
All you can eat is a good price and the Salmon & Tuna carpaccio are the best! I like the service and the ambience is nice and clean. My second time with my husband here for dinner.

Armen T.

Yelp
I've ate at 7 AYCE sushi spots in last couple months....this place is the best hands down. A lot of spots just rearrange the same rolls like its Mexican food. Each roll here tastes distinctively different and quality....very good. And very little rice on both rolls and nigiri....ALMOST not enough rice lol. WOW! THE SPOT!!!

Dana M.

Yelp
Great sushi at a reasonable price. Loved the ambience of the strip mall restaurant and speed of service as we were traveling on the road and needed something healthy and easy. Peter did a great job with the presentation and everything was delicious

Ricardo D.

Yelp
We arrived around 3pm. Service was great! The atmosphere was perfect. The hip hop playlist was a nice touch. Our server was very attentive and the food was amazing. Had a great dinner with my fiance. Been here a few times and will continue to be a loyal customer.
google avatar

Monica H.

Yelp
Just wanted to update my review due to COVID-19. This place is open for takeout. My boyfriend, Bill and I would come here for AYCE sushi before Covid. They were always packed. They have a variety of rolls. All of their sushi is fresh & delicious. This place is a little hidden. It's behind Starbucks to the left. Tonight we had the their amazing lobster roll. Highly recommended and show some support for our local OC small businesses.

Janessa S.

Yelp
The best all you can eat spot in this area!!!! The Baked Salmon and Tokyo Nights roll are my favorite!! It's a mellow low key spot good beer deals too!
google avatar

Kent V.

Yelp
My friend and I came here last night. He got the all you can eat sushi for $35 and had no complaints and I got the beef teriyaki. For the price of this dish ($16.95) I didn't expect it to be beef brisket. Overall, the meal for the value was not the best - even if it comes with salad, soup, rice, etc. I ate at Kabuki a few days before and got a hugeee portion of steak, chicken, rice, soup, salad for $20 - steak that you can get cooked to your liking (medium rare), so this place sort of let me down. Service was quick and friendly though. I would come back to try other things on the menu though.
google avatar

Angelita M.

Yelp
Googled "affordable, good all you can eat sushi" and this popped up. Definitely did NOT Disappoint! We will definitely be back when we are in California/ LA area (: delicious! When we ate here it was 35/person with buy one get one 99cent beers and this was dinner not at happy hour
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Great AYCE sushi spot. Immediately got seated when coming in on a Wednesday night. Servers were very attentive. The rolls aren't very impressive to me ,however the nigiri is what caught my attention. Good lord the rice ratio is amazing from other ayce spots. The size of the salmon nigiri was huge with a small portion of rice. Wish I had pictures but I was just devouring everything haha. The salmon is probably my most favorite out of all the nigiri. It was fresh and a good portion. Seared salmon was a delight as well. I also had tuna , albacore , saba , and seared salmon. The saba was exceptionally good. Nice ambience for a date night. Overall , great ayce spot just needs work on the rolls and presentation.

Cesar L.

Yelp
Place closes 30 min earlier than the hours that is said to close. Please don't waste your time driving or placing an order before 9pm.
google avatar

Brittney C.

Yelp
We came here after having a very poor experience at another sushi place close by where we ended up leaving mid meal. We were still hungry so we came to Maru sushi. Maru sushi was WAY better and we left happy and satisfied. Service was excellent and fast, staff was super friendly and food was delicious and fish was high quality. We sat at the bar and the Korean sushi chef (unfortunately I didn't catch his name) was fantastic. It was my friends birthday and he definitely saved the day for us. We had a great time, absolutely will come back!
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to try this place for the first time for our usually "catch-up" dinner. It's a small restaurant, with ample parking in a shopping center. The nigiri was really good! We weren't big fans of the rolls we tried though. I also felt like they used a little too much rice on the nigiri. If they'd use a little less, I'd definitely give 4 stars!
google avatar

Randy D.

Yelp
It's ayce, you get what you get. Most of the time it's pretty good. I like how they offer takoyaki and don't force everyone in the party to do AYCE if they don't want to.
google avatar

Jayna A.

Yelp
Best sushi place I've ever been to. I wish I could eat more just so I could enjoy the food longer.

Linda Z.

Yelp
Just moved to SoCal and took my daughter to this restaurant to try sushi for her first time. This is way more delicious than all the sushi I've tried in all my years living in Idaho. Our server was Sophia and she was very kind and friendly. Prices were very reasonable as well. I will definitely come back!

Sophia D.

Yelp
Amazing service! John was very welcoming and helpful. I love their mango tango roll. Sushi chef Peter and TK were efficient and the quality was on point. Nice atmosphere, too! Come here if you want affordable, quality sushi and a good time.
google avatar

Antonia R.

Yelp
Surprisingly friendly!!!! Yay a sushi place that all staff is friendly. The all you can eat sushi was another surprise, they didn't hold out Waitress was cutesy and kind!
google avatar

Julien H.

Yelp
Have ordered take out from this place many times. I went in and ordered tuna. Super disappointed and did not taste good and fresh, couldn't finish the roll. Also got yellow tail which I normally like and it was barely edible. For the price you can't do better but would rather walk away with a good stomach. Used to be fresh but now it's no bueno.
google avatar

Bradley H.

Yelp
Came here with a group of friends. We had such a great time. The rolls came out in decent time and our server Emily was so nice to us. We all loved the Jalapeño roll. We did the all you can eat. It was challenging at times to eat everything but we did. Only made it to round 2 before we were all defeated. But we definitely got our monies worth. Had room to our selves too which was awesome
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
One of the best ayce sushi bars. Quality fish, not too much rice to fish ratio. Great roll selection
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
Decent sushi spot for AYCE for only 29.99. Lots of specialty rolls to choose from. They have happy hour 7 days a week and Fri to Sun it's all day until 7 pm. They also have 30% Off of the rolls for takeout.
