The Best Sushi Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"A newer addition to downtown, chef “Maru” Maruyama’s Cortez Hill omakase hideaway features a two-hour experience with 20 courses priced at $180. The concept of omotenashi, or the art of hospitality, mindfulness, and outstanding service, are at the center of this sushiya as diners have been fond of the staff’s attentive nature and welcoming energy. The omakase begins with appetizers and ends with soup and dessert — a handful of nigiri take up a few courses in between, along with a warm dish, and followed by even more nigiri." - Roxana Becerril

I seriously can’t see how this place has any negative reviews! I’ve been coming here for so many years and have literally never had a bad experience. I always get AYCE when I come here because it’s just SO worth it! This is the only place I come to time and time again for sushi because it’s just simply the best hands down out of anywhere I’ve tried in both Orange County and LA county thus far. I live in LA county now, and STILL make the drive to Maru when I’m craving sushi! The best Miso soup, always so flavorful and salty in the best way. Rolls are immaculate and always perfect temperature and filled to perfection! I can only assume anyone saying it was just “okay” don’t actually know what good sushi tastes like lol. I said what I said. The staff are all the kindest most attentive crew ever! This place has a piece of my heart! 🍣 ♥️

I tried the eat all you can, but I didn’t try most of the food. But service is fantastic, and the sushi is very good. But when i order (chicken popcorn) without sauce. (Because im not a really sweet person, the sauce is sweet) It doesn’t really good. No taste at all. But the rest is fine.. It’s still very good experience. Definitely to try more again 🫶

The service wasn't great. It wasn't busy and you'll be waiting a long time for the sushi to come out. Also we had two pieces of sushi left and were told that we'd be charged a fee if we didn't finish it. The most frustrating thing is that our orders would be randomly substituted by random things so we weren't getting what we ordered. We didn't order the crabmeat and I showed it to the server but we were still told if we don't finish what we didn't order, we'd be charged a fee! The menu itself was average and the quality of sushi was slightly below average for the price. Also kids ages 3-12 are charged $19.99 which I think is overpriced for a 3 year old child. Definitely not coming back.

This place is a joke. None of the fish is fresh. Just ask the chef. all the fish is frozen or farm they freeze then slice into nigiri slices then freeze it again until they need it so you can have fish that has been there for over two weeks. They pre make all their rolls so you can have a temperature shrimp or spicy tuna roll that’s been setting for hours. Doubled check your items cause you can easily get spoil food and they will play it off like it’s nothing or say you’re picky. You can arrive an hour before closing and the head chef will just cut off your order and tell new customer their close. And the head Chef leaving his dentures in a cup out there in the open is crazy.

Honestly really good sushi , you can try a lot of rolls without having to commit to eating 8 pieces per roll , very fresh and great taste ! I would recommend coming and I will definitely come again 👍

All was good, except the Princess roll...it has a weird flavor that gave me nausea, and I wasn't able to eat after that. I'll avoid it next time 😊

My friend and I decided to try this place out for lunch since we were short on time. We are glad we made the visit. We did 3 rounds of food. This place will charge you if you leave any extra rice on your plate, so we were careful on how much we ordered. We ordered heavy during the first 2 rounds and less on the 3rd round. We had some sushi as well as some no rice options and sake. My fave were the mackerel, salmon skin salad, baked crawfish, tamago, shrimp boat and TNT. I didn't like the summer roll, albacore onion, and yellowtail. If I ever come in a big group, we would do the other options that come with more pieces. Overall, we enjoyed this place very much. Free parking is plentiful in their lot.

Been eating here for over a decade and its still better then most sushi places I've been to. There is AYCE but its been increasing in price every year but its worth it. Service is always fast and polite with prompt refills on drinks even when they are busy. The place is extremely clean all the time I've been there. My only complaint is the sport channel on the tv is a bit loud sometimes.
