"Invented in Trenton around 1910, the tomato pie is a Jersey thing, a fairly conventional round Neapolitan pie with the cheese on the bottom and the plain but profuse tomato sauce (in some cases just canned tomatoes) plopped on top. Maruca’s is a stand on the boardwalk that sports an oven with turntables inside, allowing pizzas to be withdrawn from windows on each side during peak times. The sauce is applied in a spiral, so that each slice is striped with bright red." - Robert Sietsema

My family walked up and down and back and forth on the boardwalk looking for food. It was crazy hot and I couldn’t imagine eating pizza (also, there was a long line). Then, I went over and checked the pizza out, and smelled all of the smells, and I was hooked! I had a slice of the white pie, and it was ginormous. The only hiccup that happened was that as I walked back to our table, one of my kids reached out and grabbed my wrist - which caused my plate to tip over and for my slice to slide off. Luckily, I have the reflexes of a jungle cat and was able to slam my hand against the hot slice and into the plate - thus saving the day, and my lunch - with only minor burns. It was totally worth it! So good. So big. So hot. So yum!

**Edit - I feel the need to make an edit on my review. I still think the pizza overall is good but I'm tired of waiting in a huge line for 15-20 min and then another 15-20 min to get a slice or two of pizza. Absolutely ridiculous. You wait all that time after ordering and you get basically cold slices. Why the wait then? I always see pies right there on the counter that slices can be grabbed from very quickly and easily. But for some reason there's always a long line and a long wait. It doesn't seem they have any type of management ever or anybody who's in charge just a bunch of teens high School / college kids who obviously have no idea had to do things efficiently. Yet after waiting in a long line to order to in turn wait another fifteen or more minutes for a slice they sure do push the tip. I agree with others the seaside heights location does a much better job. This place really needs to do something with having somebody there who is in charge and keeps things moving. People coming there want to grab a quick slice for themselves or their hungry kids. They don't want to wait 20 to 30 minutes for a slice or two. ** Great pizza. Big slices. Limited seating but at least they have some tables which is nice. Other places have none. Line can be long because it's popular and they send every slice to do a turn in the oven so it can be a bit before you order and get your slice. Not big on when you pay it asks you for a tip before completing the transaction as many places do nowadays and the cashier points out the tip feature. You're literally taking my order and someone else is handing me a slice of pizza. Not a tipping situation. And yes I've worked in multiple food settings including pizzerias. People don't tip when getting a slice usually. I did have one person who said if you don't want to tip just hit no tip and because she said that I tipped her. I appreciated that. Nice option if you want something quick and relatively inexpensive compared to the other restaurants on the boardwalk.

Overall, this place was a good experience. The pizza was really good, and the slice was big. At $6.50 for a slice in a shore town, that’s pretty reasonable in my book. They have a few tables to share but the line does get long. I would definitely suggest you try at least a slice on your next visit to Asbury Park beach. The only negative I have (and it’s a personal pet peeve of mine) is they only accept credit card or Apple Pay. I am a cash is king person so luckily my spouse had a card. Ironic though that they have a cash tip jar at the register. Lol

Google
Work has ordered pizza for lunch from here a lot. The last 3 times our 10-15 pizzas were raw, not a couple of them, every single one, I can make a better pie in an Easy Bake Oven. Called them several times to let them know they lost business but they didn’t even answer

Google
Very hit or miss. When it’s good, it’s GOOD. But more often than not the pizza is BURNT. They have their pies sitting in the front window and you can tell just by looking at it that it’s overdone. Then they take the slice and put it back in the oven when you order. By the time you eat it you can’t even fold it in half because it’s so well done. If they cooked their pies a few minutes less it would be perfect and 5 star.

Google
adorable little pizza shack. there's not many places to sit but if you're grabbing and going it's great! they have large slices and the plain one is pretty tasty. the crust is nice and crunchy

Google
If you're craving pizza at the beach, then this place won't disappoint! We went on the 4th of July and the line was long, but it moved quickly. The pizza was great. We ordered a few cheese pizza slices and the crust was nice and crispy. I would definitely bring your own water though. They charge $3 a bottle.

Adam J

Google
A generous sized slice which tastes on point and feels much healthier than the rest! I love that the regular cheese slice wasn't overly greasy like most others this style.

Ivan B.

Yelp
Maruca's is on the boardwalk near one of the entrances. I ordered a large sausage pie that took about 15 minutes to prepare. This was one of the better boardwalk pizza's I've had. The crust was crispy, the sausage was spread out perfectly, the cheese was gooey without being overly greasy and the tomato sauce tasted like it was made with real fresh tomatoes. It is a like on the pricey side which is what you would expect from a boardwalk stall but you're getting good quality pizza. Staff was very nice as well and they have 4 picnic style tables in front of their stall to eat at. Overall a good experience and I would definitely eat there again.

Richard L.

Yelp
Tomato pie spot on boardwalk Always a line when we passed by Large slices after a day of drinking hit the spot Pepperoni was good Despite the crowd service was spot on and everyone ate and left leaving time for next couple to sit down and eat and there are spots in near by benches you can sit and eat so it worked out and we were glad we went.

Seema Z.

Yelp
This food truck is a right on the board walk. Huge slices for 7$ plus and 18in pies for 24$. We got a half and half option. Pepperoni and onion pepper. The crust is cooked just right and on the crunchy side. With lotsa tomato sauce. If u craving pies and pizza this is the spot. Right by the beach entrance

Ashley B.

Yelp
Not a bad start if you're craving pizza while on the boardwalk. The slices are big and we opted to slice ours in half. Again the pizza was fine but it's nothing to write home about. Consider stopping here if you're craving some convenient and decent pizza.

Leena S.

Yelp
Surprisingly, some pretty decent pizza comes out of this little food truck! The place was popular for a late Thursday night around 8:30pm. We ordered an 18" plain pie, as well as a pepperoni slice. The pizza took about 20 minutes, but slices are immediately available. The prices aren't cheap ($22 for the pie and $7 for the slice), but it was good pizza. I wasn't expecting much, but we all left happy with our bellies slight fuller. FYI: The individual slice is much larger than a slice on the 18" pie.

Claire M.

Yelp
Excellent tomato pie style pizza. Great sauce, great dough consistency and right on the boardwalk. Only gripe is that they run out of slices very quickly.

Michael R.

Yelp
Great beach pizza, I'm not sure what's up with this tomato sauce swirl, but normally I would prefer to have more cheese. I found it quite refreshing.

Angelo B.

Yelp
I wouldn't go here unless I was really really hungry and wanted to get something on the boardwalk. The crust and base was hard like cardboard. We got one which came with pepporoni, sausage and ricotta. The ricotta itself was fine, but they were really stingy with the proteins. I ended up not even finishing my slice (note its a huge slice), which is rare for me. We ordered the enormous size ($44)... size was reasonable for the price given the location (this is why Im giving it 2 stars instead of 1). But we ended up throwing away some because of the poor quality.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided to end our night with some pizza. We each got a white slice. It was pretty good, the slice was huge. A bit pricey at $7 each but that's expected on the boardwalk.

Steve A.

Yelp
Let me tell you something. If you're real New Jersey. If you're real Jersey Shore and not some pedantic snob who is looking for ritz and glamor? This is your restaurant. Do you know what boardwalk pie is? If not, this will inform you. If so, this will delight you. Giant slices of slightly greasy pie. Nothing has that much flavor but all together it's a meal you take with you and sits in your stomach. It says tomato pie on the outside but this is stereotypical Jersey Pizza the way you want it to be. The white pie is particularly divine, btw. Giant dollops of ricotta. Texture and taste are way above the cut. The regular and sausage pies may be more ordinary. Compared to every other place here, though? If you care about your dollars as much as you care about your taste buds, spend them here.

Cathi C.

Yelp
I got two plain slices for my daughter and husband. Surprised to get a decent slice down the shore and on the boardwalk. These slices are bigger than your ordinary so it was more than enough for a three year old. The slice was thin and crispy. It was $6 a slice, not bad for how big it was.

KC H.

Yelp
Ate a single slice of plain pizza from here and ended up with horrible food poisoning within 20 minutes of eating it. The pizza tasted bad as was but then I was horribly sick for 24 hours after. Ruined my beach weekend

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Happy to see they've opened a location here. The last time I had a slice from Maruca's was at Seaside last year and it was great so I was looking forward to my slice today. They charge $4.50 for the plain slice or $5.50 with a topping. I went with the regular slice and they heated it for a minute but it really wasn't that hot and crispy as I like it. They have a few tables out front so you can take a seat and enjoy your slice. If your in the mood for a slice on the boardwalk check them out...

Suzanne K.

Yelp
I wish I had read these reviews before going there. I went to get pizza and all the tables were full. There was a sign that said "tables are for customers only" but one table had girls eating playa bowls. I asked nicely if they could ask those girls to move and the "person in charge" didn't want to. When I asked why have that sign if u aren't going to enforce it, she went over- came back and said- they said they would move down. Then I picked up my pizza - which was not warm at all. I asked if it had been warmed up and another girl at the counter said "yes!" Exasperatedly. So I had to awkwardly eat lukewarm pizza next to the girls I tried to have moved. Even though it was their policy, I felt like I would be labeled a "karen" if i didn't shut up and eat my shitty pizza. Save your $. Pizza wasnt even that good.

B A.

Yelp
Total bullshit ... #1 thing I hate is being ripped off. They have you by the balls on the boardwalk. They clearly know it. $30 for a plain pizza. $5 for a plain slice. An extra $1 for a slice topping. They charged me $6 for this slice (which is an extra $1 for sausage!). I'm super annoyed. May dispute the charge. Total rip off. And they wanted a tip.

Mimi J.

Yelp
Girl working the register has a lot of waking up to do. She's extremely rude to customers, I wish I hadn't even bought anything. They don't take cash either. Would never recommend this place. Get new staff who know what they're doing.

student Luka E.

Yelp
Personally I got two Plain Slices, while my family got a variety of the other slices. Yet each of my family members were absolutely raving about how delicious the food was here. The crust has a crunch to it while still remaining thin and soft, and the sauce was absolutely lovely and mixed well with the cheese. If you're in the area and hungry, Maruca's Tomato Pies is a great choice!

Tatiana A.

Yelp
Went to Asbury park for a nice day at the beach! Decided to get a slice of pizza, looked very appetizing! Prices were a little pricy, but we were at the beach the prices will be expected to be a bit pricy. We ordered a slice of the white pizza! Staff was very friendly and helpful! Enjoyed our slice! Thank you!

Nicola D.

Yelp
The pizza is always consistent whenever I get a slide. I get a slide every time I am in Asbury and it's always on the money. I look forward to a slice or two every time. If visit Asbury at least twice in a week during the summertime.

Nell W.

Yelp
Yup, the sausage slice was good. Very, very good for boardwalk pizza. Large pieces of sausage, gooey cheese, crispy crust. I couldn't ask for more. It was a big slice. It was $7 but that's how much I pay for specialty slices in Manhattan and some aren't even that good. It was worth the money Total:$10 Slice and bottled soda

Robert E.

Yelp
Great regular slice. Tasty sauce. Quick service even when busy. Way better than the normal greasy slip.

Vijay A.

Yelp
If you are on the Asbury Park beach boardwalk and hungry, just head straight towards the end of the boardwalk to Maruca's for some delicious pizza. The place is clean, has a couple of tables to sit and enjoy your pizza. The sauce that they use tastes so good and flavorful. I've never been so impressed with a place that sells pizza by slices before.

Julia C.

Yelp
Great pizza spot on the boardwalk! Quick service and they have a variety of toppings to choose from. I believe the base price is $4.50 and toppings is $1+. Btw, the water here is cheaper than pucker lemonade.

Saida S.

Yelp
for only $4.50, this slice was so filling and satisfying. It was the perfect lunch for a day at the beach bc they were not only quick but it was easy to grab and go. The thin crust makes the pizza really crunchy and I could taste the fresh ingredients. I would definitely come back to eat this pizza again

Mario B.

Yelp
The pizza was horrible super hard I asked the lady politely if I could have a pizza with very little sauce she said I don't think we can I'm like in my HEAD I was like umm wow. Then I said please very little sauce on pie and then she gave me a pizza that was harder then a rock crust like really ? And the cheese was okay decent and then the sauce over powered the pizza they swirled it over the pie we got and 22.50 for a 18inch pie

Craig L.

Yelp
Really not sure how this Pizza won an award as it is mostly bland, tasteless and expensive.

Michael H.

Yelp
I know, I know - Maruca's has been around forever......the pizza is just ok compared to other places ranked much higher locally. It is shore pizza! - When the pie or pizza is hot and fresh, it is not a bad boardwalk/shore pie. - When the pie or pizza is warm or more on the cold side, it is just not that great. Asbury location - focus on the customers and make the food warm! For $5 a slice and $30 a pie - it should be perfect!!!!!! Many local places in Asbury that are a million percent better and cheaper for pizza!!!!

G B.

Yelp
26 minute wait for 1 slice, absolutely absurd. Pizza was pretty good, but next time I'll pass. Crust is subpar but the cheese blend and sauce are pretty good.

Yve N.

Yelp
AMAZING PIZZA. Like wow you have to try it. At first I looked at the slice and it looks strange but when you finally get to taste it, WOW. I'm a lover for thin crust pizza and this pizza doesn't disappoint. Yes it's 5$ a slice which is pricey but I mean it's worth it and the size is pretty big. They don't skim you out. I wish they had condiments out but I guess it's bc of the current pandemic. But That'll be my go to place for pizza

Sara h.

Yelp
Good slice. Typical thin jersey style pizza. It's just too much sauce for me personally, but the flavors are great.

Joanne G.

Yelp
I had a very positive experience here with Stephanie the manager- needed a lot of pizza for my beach party on the beach at Asbury and she was great making the arrangements- the white pizza was very tasty!! And the other pizzas were also good.

Walter P.

Yelp
You know what you're getting into people - stop with the stupid reviews. Great "been out drinking and starving" late night pizza stop. Exactly what you want at exactly the right time!

Dominique R.

Yelp
OMG... if there is pizza in Heaven, this is it!!! This was my first ever slice of Maruca's Tomato pie. We went after a concert at the Pony, and I think they have ruined me now for any other pizza!!! Seriously- SOOOOOOO good, it is crazy.

Lauren C.

Yelp
The pizza here is delicious and always fresh. Thin crunchy crust with good sauce. Good ratio of sauce to cheese. $5 a slice little steap but I guess that's boardwalk prices for you.

Dave D.

Yelp
We had our pizza from Maruca's on a busy Saturday night. Despite a microburst that popped up on the shore, the pizza was still made. We had 2 pies which were enormous! A red and a white and both were delicious in their own ways. The 24 inch pies made for gigantic slices that brought smiles to the kids faces. The white had a great taste of ricotta in each bite with just the right amount of garlic. The red was interesting with the swirl of sauce on top. My 5 year old said he would give it 100 stars but it only goes up to 5. Definitely recommended and should be a stop when in Asbury Park!

Diane M.

Yelp
My Italian boyfriend from Staten Island said it's the best pizza he's had since moving to Jersey 12 years ago. Thin crispy crust and just enough sauce and cheese. Loved it!

Justin S.

Yelp
Pretty good pizza. Extremely overpriced though. You're basically paying double what a normal pizza place would charge because its on the boardwalk.

Frank S.

Yelp
Something was wrong with your plain and sausage slices on 5/27/2021. They tasted burnt but weren't. The cheese was bad. Funky tasting. Check the cheese or change the cheese or the slices were sitting in the direct hot sun too long

Jay C.

Yelp
This was an awesome place. Large size pizza and fresh. My kids and family enjoyed the food. I think they need more or larger area to eat/sit down. Beside that good job

Sarah B.

Yelp
Pizza is good, but be careful when you pay. My bill came to $36.00, I check charges on my card the next day and I was charged $72.00. Called about it and the person was rude told me they couldn't help. A person called me back and we shredded they would send me a gift card for the over charge, its been over a month and I still haven't received the card.

K G.

Yelp
This is NOT the traditional Maruca's pies! They used to use a white cheddar blend, which made the cheese yellow. I had a slice there today and it was completely different; it was white, and stretchy. The crust was burnt on top and had lots of huge air bubbles, which occurs when the dough is not tossed enough. I've been eating Maruca's pies ever since they had their original two locations on Seaside Heights boardwalk in the 1990s, and this is DEFINITELY a different recipe. It may be OK, but it's not the Original Marucas, and I'm not going back until the original recipe is back.

Todd F.

Yelp
It is seriously good pizza. My wife - a huge pizza critic - loved it. That was a good sign. One slice is the size of two regular slices, so the $5 slice was a solid deal. If I knew how good it was, I would have ordered a whole pie. Oh well, something to look forward to next time. Well done, Maruca's!

Suzanne C.

Yelp
$39.00 for a pizza?????!!!!!! I'd rather go to Mc Loone's a few feet away on the boardwalk and have two nice dinners for $39.00. Anyway, I was preparing to order a slice and try it, but what stopped me was seeing the two young girls who were working behind the counter were not wearing any gloves. I observed them touching their hair, necks and rubbing their eyes inbetween picking up the slices and putting them on places. That grossed me out. Ewww....

Scott N.

Yelp
I went to Marucas today and waited patiently from 11:15 am until 12:30 pm until they opened due to a lack of help (it's Labor Day and trying to get help is daunting)..ok...I get it...I befriend Sam (the owner) and listen to him rant about the non existent help (albeit...he is dressed all in white casual garb without a dabble of sauce on him...just a cell in hand..and banter from his mouth ) ... After those 60 minutes of waiting and listening to his banter I order what I was sent by my friends to buy...a whole pie listed on the menu for $30.00 ... now I am told I can purchase a whole pie (by the slice) .. not a whole pie like I wanted...so...the pie will cost $40.00.. well...I didn't buy your pie...you said you hated the business Sammy... well..I hate the way you run it... I will never patronize your establishment just based on what I experienced today ... close up..retire...you don't deserve to have your lease extended... give your box up to a venue that actually has compassion for its clients...

Nicolas A.

Yelp
loved it.. very kind cashier!!! pizza came sizzling hot just how i like it. do not pay any mind to the prices because the portion that is provided is off the charts!

D F.

Yelp
If you're not looking for a tomato pie, ironically, Tomato Pie is for you! Huge slices, thin crispy crust, flavorful tomatoes....and cheese and cheese & meat. Yup, no tomato pie on the menu so those of you from places like south jersey or Philly who know what I'm talking about are SOL. So, go if you want pizza, but not if you're looking for a tomato pie.

Julius B.

Yelp
Ordered a pie and 30 min later wasn't ready. Decided to get up and ask what happened, and it turns out this little tikes pizza shop run by teenagers didn't even process the order and make the pie. I was kind of annoyed especially since my parking ticket was about to expire so I couldn't wait for them to make me a new pie, so I decided to get a refund. These troglodytes didn't even have the decency to apologize or anything, or even tell me exactly what happened, because they just wanted me to get out of their hair. This business needs to take some customer service training ASAP. They seem like nice people but clearly have no idea how to act when shit hits the fan. If something's wrong, tell me! Don't sit their chatting amongst yourselves like middle schoolers while I'm the one looking like a clown waiting 45 minutes for a pizza. I will never know how good or bad the pizza tastes, but I know that the employees here have the communication skills of a piece of toast. It's sad that this place only succeeds off the fact that they're the only pizza place on the boardwalk.
