Where to Eat and Drink in Temescal

"One of SF’s best Hakata-style ramen shops expanded to Oakland with this Temescal location (there are also outposts in Irvine, Redwood City, Del Mar, and Frisco). The 20-hour tonkotsu broth is the most popular, but the chicken paitan is also not to be overlooked." - Eater Staff

Google
Heard lot of good things about this place but was disappointed after trying their ramen. It lacked richness and flavor that you expect from a ramen plus the noodles had lot of bite to it for my taste. We also tried gyoza and it was let down as well. Service was fast and staff was super friendly which you expect from any Japanese place. This place gets crowded and we had to wait 40 mins. I don’t know if they take reservation I would recommend that.

Google
It was crowded and we were on the waiting list. The food came fast and it was good, but not the best ramen I’ve had. The meat was tender but I’m not so happy with the broth because I’ve eaten lots of Ramen.

Deb L

Google
Some say this is the only “authentic” ramen shop in the East Bay. We had fried shrimp buns (seasonal, yummy) and shared a bowl of 5Chicken Ramen with Rich White “Paitan” Broth. toppings w/ chashu chicken breast. this is a small chain with locations in CA, TX, NYC and Vegas.

Noel John

Google
Genuinely one of the best bowls of tonkotsu ramen I’ve had. Ordered the Hakata Tonkotsu DX and the broth was incredibly rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. The service was also great. The staff were super welcoming and took the time to walk us through the menu, which made the whole experience even better. Definitely a spot I’d come back to and recommend to anyone craving a solid bowl of ramen. Sapporo pitcher was solid as well

Google
The Spicy Tan Tan the perfect comfort meal-rich, flavorful, and satisfying. I also really enjoyed the Kimino Yuzu drink on the side. Great combination!

Google
This place absolutely blew me away! The Tonkotsu ramen was incredible – the broth was the richest and most flavorful I've ever tasted. I'm usually disappointed because the broth often ends up too thin/watered down, but theirs was perfect. The chashu was cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. Generous portions too! Service was top-notch and they have a fantastic drinks menu. The karage was decent, but felt a bit more like regular fried chicken. Overall, an amazing spot for ramen. Highly recommend!

Google
Amazing food. The ramen is cooked really well and will fill you up. There's a little bit of a weight but you can always order appetizers to hold you over. Barking around the area is difficult to find I would suggest going early before rush hour time. Definitely check out

Google
The restaurant in Oakland is where I went to. Good ramen and good fried chicken. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Clean and elegant restaurant. The entire restaurant staff will greet you in Japanese when you enter.

Yelp
Marufuku is absolutely top-notch. The food, drinks, service, and atmosphere all come together perfectly. The restaurant feels both modern and cozy, and the food is more than worth it. If you go, definitely try their sake--it's served in an oak wood base, which gives it this amazing oaky flavor. As for the ramen, you can't go wrong with any of them, but our favorite was the Hakata Tonkotsu DX. The broth is so rich and flavorful. The mixed drinks were another highlight--one came in the cutest ornament, and when it was poured, it sparkled with glitter. Let's just say we were all jealous and made a mental note to order it next time!

Yelp
I love Marufuku and highly recommend both locations I've visited (Oakland & SF). I've visited both locations many times and it's always consistent. Ive never had a bad experience! The Oakland location feels a bit roomier than the SF location, making for a comfortable ramen eating experience! My favorite things to order are the chicken karaage, Takoyaki and the Tonkatsu DX ramen. The chicken is always fried to perfection, a light airy batter, fried up nice and crispy, while keeping the chicken perfectly juicy. Its chefs kiss delicious, I usually order two orders because it's so good. The Takoyaki and ramen broth are also very tasty. The ramen broth is rich, and almost creamy. I tend to finish my bowl and order an extra side of noodles so I have a second bowl for later. lol The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because tonight in particular I asked multiple staff members for things like straws, sides of sauce and what not and 3 different times, 3 different staff members forgot to come back with what I asked for . I wasn't upset, but I did have to ask for the same things, multiple times for this reason. Aside from that, I have no complaints about this place. I'll be back time and time again for a delicious bowl of ramen.

Yelp
Taste: 5 Value: 5 Service: 5 Came here to eat with family and had a delicious meal. Tonkatsu DX ramen with thin artisanal noodles made for a different texture than I'm used to. The other ramens our party had were delicious. All bowls were eaten clean. Also tried their warm ginger cocktail and it was delicious as well.

Yelp
I'm really happy that there's a Marafuku closer to me rather than driving to SF. My boyfriend and I added our name to their waitlist and honestly didn't wait that long. We were sat within maybe 10 minutes of waiting outside. The restaurant is a pretty good size inside and they also have outdoor seating. Honestly, I've been here a few times before, but recently the chicken paitan has been on point! I was worried that I wouldn't like the chicken paitan since I'm used to Tonkotsu, or their version of it, but I was pleasantly surprised with how creamy and rich the broth is. I think it's honestly better than what I'm normally used to. I finished the whooooole bowl.

Yelp
Marufuku ramen is honestly the best ramen I've ever had hands down. I love their Hakata Tonkotsu DX with all my heart. Their pork belly, the egg, and vegetables are just the perfect blend with the fatty, delicious broth. Their only downside is it is only open for lunch dine in on Fridays. I work nearby and taking it to go is not that same. I can't wait to go back. No matter the time of year or weather, I'm always down for Marufuku. I'd love if one would open in Livermore/tracy area but for now, the Oakland location is amazing!

Yelp
Came here for lunch when they opened at 11:30am and got seated right away. Great spot for a date or if you have kids because their $10 kids ramen meal is a good deal and comes with broccoli, corn, edamame (healthy), two pieces of chicken karage, and French fries with kewpie mayonnaise. They also get apple juice and a small jello dessert. I enjoyed my hakata pork tonkotsu ramen and my husband liked his chicken ramen. Only complaint was that the tempura brussel sprouts were a let down- they didn't taste cooked and were still pretty hard and sort of raw inside. You could taste the truffle flavor but it was very unappealing with the raw texture of the sprouts. I don't recommend this appetizer. They should consider steaming or air frying these before they dip them in the tempura batter and fry them. If they already do either of these, they need to extend the time because the sprouts still tasted raw to me. My husband also didn't like them. Noodles and soup were good so no complaints there. Service was great and we enjoyed the bench seating .

Yelp
It's okay to good imo food wise. Service was great, staff was friendly and helpful. Ultra Spicy didn't have much kick to it. I didn't see an option for thicker noodles. Thin noodles were okay, but u much prefer a medium wavy noodle for better chew. The broth was pretty good but wasn't very spicy. Chashu was the second best I've had behind Tsuruya in Berkeley. Gyoza I did not care for the filling. Tsuruaya way out in front for my favorite ramen. Mensho 2 and this spot 3rd.

Yelp
This ramen joint it worth the hype! The flavors on this ramen are absolutely delicious and the portion sizes are very fair. We tried the spicy and the classic tonkotsu ramens. The spicy one was especially the star, but both were great. Prices are pretty good. Staff was a little bit non existent but when they were there they wilder nice. We will definitely be back to try some of their other items! Take note: highly recommend using the yelp waitlist feature! The place isn't huge and we went on a Wednesday night about 9 and it was about full.

Yelp
We dined out and our meal was ready at the door. I didn't get to see much of the inside. The restaurant is on a busy street where parking is a challenge. I was dropped off to grab and go. The food was ready when they said it would be. The prices were reasonable and the broth (with the added chili powder) was amazing! The Karaage was moist and seasoned perfectly. Here's What I Think... If I want good ramen and don't mind scrounging for a parking spot, I'll be back.

Yelp
Great food and some of the best ramen we have ever had! We got the Hakata Tonkotsu DX and Chicken Paitan DX. Both were amazing the Tonkotsu was better but we loved the chicken that came with the chicken paitan. The serving size was huge and our waitress was so nice. Highly recommend and get on their waitlist before stopping by to help with the wait.

Yelp
Marufuku proved to me that it is possible to have excellent takeout ramen. I loved the way that it was packaged to ensure maximum flavor and quality when I got home. The ratio of the toppings to broth to noodles was perfect. I did order extra pork chashu to make this more hearty. I also really enjoyed the juiciness of the chicken Karaage. 10/10!
google avatar

Daniela S.

Yelp
I don't usually order ramen to-go because it does t taste the same (imo), but this ramen did not disappoint! I ordered the chicken ramen! The broth was a 10, noodles a 10, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. The only downside? It came with two chicken strips. My order was made fairly quickly and picking it up was a breeze. The host was very courteous. Also, if you plan on eating here, there's plenty of outdoor seating, but finding parking on weekend can be tricky. Vibes look 10/10 when I pass by on my morning walks.

Yelp
Delicious, delicious! I'm a really big hot pot person , surprisingly I've never went out on my way to try Ramen spots. When my friend suggested this place, I was open-minded because I read a lot of good reviews and I noticed when we drove by it was always busy. So one cold Thursday night we decided to pop in and we luckily only had a five minute wait! As you walk in, it was a very warm and welcoming vibe! I love the way the restaurant has unique detail all over. I poured over the menu and I was kind of intimidated because I have never been to a Ramen place. Of course I looked at yelp and I was able to figure out what was gonna be best for me to try.. I tried the most basic Ramen and a tons of appetizers. Everything was delicious. I honestly can't wait to go back. However, I did try the pink drink and it was not good. We ended up ordering a mini bottle of Prosecco to add to it to just give it some bubbles. Overall, I had a great experience and I cannot wait to go back ! Perfect place to go when it's freezing out or when you're not feeling good! I saw they do takeout
google avatar

Yelp
Was quick to be seated. But then it took too long to be greeted. Once I ordered the food was served what seemed instantly. I'm usually a vegan/vegetable person, but I went big for the Hakata Tonkotsu broth (no noddles and subbed tofu for the pork, and no egg), added corn and nori. Broth is so so rich, prolly great for those that can tolerate it, but too rich for me. Mostly all bean sprouts, very little kikurage. I did enjoy the tofu! It's loud inside and can get very busy during prime time.
google avatar

Suraj P.

Yelp
The staff was super friendly and brought out heaters so we could sit comfortably outside with our two dogs. They gave us great recommendations on the sake too! It was a cold night but with the heaters the outside seating is still very pleasant!
google avatar

Zinia G.

Yelp
You should come here for the ramen, of course... but the real reason this is our most consistent date night spot is because of their spicy mentaiko bowl. Oh. My. Goodness. Something about the hot bowl of steamed rice, with the spicy mentaiko, with thin slices of green onions (ask for the chili oil on the side to drizzle on top)... YUM! When we first started coming here, my husband and I used to split one bowl, but now we each get our own. You can add your name to the waitlist via the Yelp app. The Marufuku bites are also delicious! The food comes out quickly every time.

Yelp
(5 out of 5) The food here is amazing, one of my good friends suggested me this place telling me it's a 10/10, we eat together a lot and he has never ranked a place this high. But he was 100% correct the food is amazing, so rich in flavor with very tender meat and perfectly cooked eggs. The service is great with warm welcoming and nice waiters! The ambiance is nice and perfect for a cold day, a modern Japanese look and a cozy feel, like most downtown Oakland, Berkely places, some of the seeting is snug to other but if you aren't ready for that request a booth, all n all this place is very good and I really hope you come try it out! And when you do tell them Rothyy sent you!
google avatar

Theresa M.

Yelp
Amazing food everytime we order or dine in! The spicy tan tan is the best that I've ever had.

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday evening and I'll start by saying that parking was terrible! 0/10 do not recommend, so be prepared to get here with enough time to find a spot to park or be prepapred to walk a bit. Before leaving for the restaurant, I added my name to the wait list on Yelp, definitely to that, so when we finally arrived to the restaurant and were finally able to park, we were seated within a couple of minutes. So total wait time was probably an hour. Finally, the actual food. I had seen some pretty good reviews for this place, so was excited to try it. We ordered the Vegetable Ramen and the Hakata Tonkatsu DX. The Vegetable ramen was super interesting. I had never had a ramen with, essentially a mixed green salad on top...regardless I appreciated the freshness of it. The broth was flavor and I really liked the spinach noodles. I also ordered it spicy so appreciated the level of spice. I do wish it had more vegetables though. I ordered corn on the side because it didn't come with it, so that definitely helped, but I wish it had more substantial veggies. Maybe mushroom. Something more than sprouts and bell pepper. I would pass on the shishito peppers! Didn't have a ton of flavors and weren't really blistered enough for my taste.
google avatar

Lucy N.

Yelp
I've been wanting Ramen since it chilly out. Our normal lunch spot closed so we tried this one based on Yelp reviews I give them a 3.5 so I rounded up to 4 (PS - Yelp we should be able to do half stars!) I ordered the TanTan Ramen with extra noodles. Delicious - I wish it had more ground chicken. And I wish it was ground pork instead of chicken. But we also ordered sides and I forgot to take pictures but these were fabulous - will order again! Gyoza Pirikara Bites Chicken Karaage We are adding this to our lunch list and I can't wait to try more of their ramens.
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
Great Ramen spot! I've been here a few times and typically get the Hakata Tonkotsu DX which never disappoints. All of their ingredients taste very fresh and service is quick. The restaurant itself is a bit small and it's popular so I suggest joining the waitlist when you're on your way since it's often a 30 minute wait if not longer!
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
We arrived at about 7:30 on a Saturday night, and put in our names for a table of 3. We were sat at about 8:15. It wasn't very loud, considering the packed restaurant. We put in our orders, and the food came out pretty quickly. I am docking a point because the server spilled ramen broth on my partners arm, and didn't apologize. Then just put the bowl on the table like nothing happened. Food was as good as it always is. Left full and happy.
google avatar

Nam D.

Yelp
Marufaku Ramen was one of the first restaurants that I ate at since coming up to the Bay Area, and it is definitely a solid ramen place! I generally order either the tonkatsu ramen or the shoyu ramen, which are both delectable. The tonkatsu is more rich and fatty, while the shoyu is salter and is "lighter" on the stomach in a sense. The karaage is also amongst the best that I ever had. Crispy on the outside, but moist on the inside, it pairs incredibly well with the ramen, I would 100% order this to share as an appetizer when you visit! Located right along Telegraph, it is a very easy spot for students to come to (I think there is a bus that comes through here), and finding parking is very easy as well since there are multiple parking lots in the surrounding area. The only con is that they do get very busy during peak hours, so unless you have a reservation, expect to be waiting.
google avatar

Verenice B.

Yelp
Top notch Oakland Ramen. I really love their vegetarian soup. It took me awhile to order it because I love the pork so much, but oooooh myyyy it is very very delicious. I would rank: 1) pork 2) vegetarian 3) chicken All very good. The sides I hardly get because they are ok but not for the price. ‍ I said it! I really enjoyed eating in during the pandemic, outside seating was cool. They don't have many great "in-store" spicy add ons, so taking to go is fine too. Unlike Viet restaurants, I can't take that to go because I want all the pickled thangs and spicy add ons.
google avatar

Emily F.

Yelp
Had takeout from here, and I have to say I still don't get the hype. The Hakata Tonkotsu was much better than the vegetable ramen I had last visit, but there are several other ramen places nearby that I prefer. There were so many green onions that the flavor was overpowering the pork even after picking many out. The ramen also wasn't very fresh tasting although I realize that may be better eating in person than takeout.
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
The good: Tonkatsu Ramen is excellent. The location is closer then SF The bad: It was super slow during lunch and the service was really slow and inattentive. We had to flag someone down.
google avatar

Maybeline C.

Yelp
Delicious ramen and pleasant staff! Location is also not bad either but it is a bit challenging to find parking if you are going during peak dining hours and there most likely is a wait so don't forget to use the Yelp Wailist Checkin to get yourselves on the wait-list as your looking for parking or as you are heading there depending on how long the wait is. But definitely worth all the parking hassle and waiting hassle! My favorite is the chicken paitan, the broth is savory and creamy, full of flavor and the chicken breast is tender and not dry, the noodles are the wavy kimd and are cooked perfectly, as it has a bounce to it still and doesn't really get soggy. My BF likes the tonkatsu one and that one also has great flavors too but I just prefer chicken broth lol. Overall this place is a definite must try for ramen.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Super yummy ramen that hits every time! It's so funny coming here and seeing a minimal wait because the Marufuku in SF always has insane lines and wait times. This is definitely one of many gems on telegraph in North Oakland! Went to the Avenue just next door for a drink while I awaited my table. The server was great, the food came out super fast. And the quality is extremely reliable. This will always be my go to ramen spot while in the East Bay.
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Will have to eat here in person but got a take out ramen of the 21$ tonkatsu ramen and it was delicious. They give you thin noodles (wheat-like??) which is not my preference to the bouncier al dente, but it was still good! The best part of the ramen was the thick and thin fatty pork belly cuts; they were extremely tender and melt in the mouth. The meat can be considered a bit salty, but it was very flavorful! The broth was hearty and coats your whole mouth with umami.
google avatar

Salam A.

Yelp
I'm not a big pork eater so it can be difficult for me to find a good ramen that doesn't contain pork. The chicken ramen here is definitely the best chicken ramen I've ever had - the broth is so creamy and flavorful - absolutely perfect on a winter evening. There are little pots of spice powder on each table which i really appreciate as a spice lover, I can add as much as my heart desires! Service was great and everyone was super attentive. We had to wait about 20 minutes which was nothing considering how many people were waiting in line! My only complaint will sound a bit odd - I ordered corn as an extra because I think corn pairs perfectly with ramen, however, it appeared to be canned corn which really threw me off and took away from the dish so that was a bit disappointing. Other than that, I highly recommend this spot!
google avatar

Hyun Y.

Yelp
Service was quick and friendly. We were lucky to get there as it opened and got seated right away. Good vibe inside and ramen was excellent. I got my tonkatsu ramen with medium spicy. It had a slight kick and the egg was awesome. When I cut it open the runny yolk was perfect consistency. Ramen noodles were slightly thinner than I was used to but was still chewy and tasty. I liked how it had perfect amount of sprouts and other toppings. The sake was okay but ramen definitely worth coming back for.
google avatar

Edison H.

Yelp
Second favorite ramen spot in the area! Tried this Oakland location a couple of times. I would rate it between the SF and RWC locations. Still haven't tried the Cupertino one just yet. Anyway, the food and service have been consistent both times. I like the overall vibes. Always nice seeing families eating here on the weekends.
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
I ordered the Hakata Tonkotsu ramen for delivery. I was very unimpressed. The broth was just OK and not even close to being as rich or flavorful as my favorite ramen restaurant (Itani) . It was decent. As far as the pork, there was hardly any to speak of- 2 little slivers, which could barely be found. It was nice that everything was packaged separately.
google avatar

Carl M.

Yelp
This was ordered in DoorDash. I'm so fat hahaha. I decided to test their new bento meals since there's no reviews or mentions of it. I ordered the chicken katsu and the unagi (eel) plates. No pics of the unagi as I ate it too quickly haha. Each bento box comes with ALL that plus a mini ramen bowl. I got like 6 meals out of 2 plates. Worth it. Ramen as always tho mini is amazing. The chicken katsu was crunchy and still good with the sauce over it. The unagi I have never had as a bbq meal, only on sushi. It was HELLA good. Keep adding to your menu and expanding beyond just ramen. Maybe try your hand at sushi too (like full on menu).
google avatar

Dani M.

Yelp
My friend suggested this place so I decided to try it out. I went on a Friday night around 6pm and I beat the dinner rush. I was seated quickly and the staff was amazing, great customer service. I ordered the Tempura Brussels Sprouts that came with a matcha salt- I wish there was a sauce that came with it, felt very dry with salt and tempura. I also got the Hakata Tonkotsu DX and it was a hefty portion enough for leftovers, worth the price. This is a great spot for a night out, or if you're looking for a more upscale ramen spot.
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
If you want delicious ramen, this is the spot to go! I love their veggie ramen. I do recommended switching out the spinach noodles for the thick regular noodles though.
google avatar

Andre A.

Yelp
Pretty solid experience. Food tasted great! The Marufuku Bites could've had a better flavor and texture. The Hakata Tonkotsu and Takoyaki were a solid 10/10 with good serving sizes. Although parking might be difficult, once you enter the establishment, it feels very clean, welcoming, and aesthetically pleasing! The staff were very nice and the service time was fairly speedy. I recommend this place.
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
Pretty good local Ramen spot. I also like their rice bowls. If you come in the afternoon or on a weekend, there could be a really long wait. No option for reservations so you have to join the waitlist.
google avatar

Dom B.

Yelp
Great ramen restaurant! I love their choice in appetizers and their ramen is very flavorful. I highly suggest the Spicy TanTan if you want concentrate, savory flavor. The inside of the restaurant is also very nice and clean, similar to their other locations. Service was fast and friendly
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
Service is always amazing and welcoming! Waiters are on top of it making sure customers are well taken care of. Food is delicious!

Yelp
We went for dinner last night craving ramen! I've been here years ago but don't recall the noodles being so thin...it's angel hair pasta thin. If it were the ramen noodle thickness I am accustomed to, they would've gotten 5 stars. I was not a fan of the thin noodles. Later I saw on their online menu, and not in the house menu, there's an option to order extra thick noodles. I would've ordered the extra thick noodles given the option. It's our bad for not researching a little more on Hakata style noodles, which apparently that region is known to have thin noodles. My husband ordered the Chicken Paitan DX, which came with a teriyaki chicken leg on a sizzling hot plate. I ordered the Hakata Tonkatsu. Both broths were rich and flavorful. Service was fantastic. Ambiance was as any bustling restaurant would be, loud and lively. We enjoyed our dinner and will return. However, next time will make sure to order the extra thick noodles.
google avatar

Janella C.

Yelp
One of my favorite ramen spots in the bay! The inside is real nice, and small but that's what I like about it. It's real cozy. The staff is always providing amazing service. I highly recommend the Hakata Tonkotsu DX!
google avatar

Jon V.

Yelp
We discovered this ramen spot on Telegraph Ave in Oakland the night before attending our youngest's Cal Day in April. The afternoon was gloomy and misty, making it the perfect time to warm up with some hot ramen. The place was packed, but the staff were great and seated us quickly despite the crowd. We opted for the Hakata Tonkotsu with pork broth. The soup was rich and flavorful, though I did miss the usual thicker noodles. Nonetheless, it was very delicious.
google avatar

Lani N.

Yelp
Love this place, especially now that our favorite ramen shop Shinmai is temporarily closed. Our family loves that there are great veg and chicken options. We also love that they deliver to Alameda. Ramen travels well, and we're never disappointed when it lands on our porch. I'd pass on the karaage if you're ordering take out, but it's great in the restaurant. Our favorites are the Hakata Tonkotsu extra broth and extra noodles and the chicken Paitan.
google avatar

Tessa D.

Yelp
The food at Marufuku Ramen is solid and consistency good. Traditional style ramen with many choices including their tasty chicken karaage, gyoza is okay. It is a plus to be able to order by DoorDash.
google avatar

Jeremi W.

Yelp
I ordered this on DoorDash one night. I ordered the hakata tonkatsu ramen with extra tantan meat. I really like how they package the ramen for takeout. The flavor was amazing, I didn't finish it all that evening so I ate the rest for lunch at work. It was still super delicious and the noodles held their integrity. Definitely going back, I'd like to go try the restaurant in person and see what that feels like.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with my partner and my bestie, who I am visiting in Oakland. We have tried to go to the location in SF before but the line was long so I'm glad we finally got to try it in Oakland. EXPERIENCE: We came around 11:30-12 and were seated right away. The restaurant was pretty empty and quiet at first, but filled up a bit more later. Service was really quick and food came out quickly too. FOOD: My bestie and I ordered the Hakata Tonkatsu, my boyfriend got the chicken Paitan, and we ordered takoyaki and the tempura brussel sprouts to share. I tried the chicken ramen and enjoyed the pork one more. The appetizers were super good and I enjoyed them. OVERALL THOUGHTS: Food was really good, the ramen is competitively priced, my belly was full, and I'd definitely recommend trying this spot out especially if you have been wanting to try Marufuku Ramen but don't want to wait that long :)

Yelp
Awesome place to drop in and get a great bowl of ramen. Very tasty, reasonably priced and very gracious and efficient service. Although there are many options in the area, I will likely come back to Marufuku anytime I'm in the vicinity.

Yelp
Ramen is good, people work fast. Gets crowded very quickly so go there sooner the better for good seating.
