Maruja Limón

"Self-taught chef Rafa Centeno is proof that someone without a background in the world of gastronomy can still be rewarded with a Michelin star. Before opening his restaurant in 2001, this former graduate in industrial relations had never cooked professionally but started to see cooking as a form of personal expression. At his charming Maruja Limón restaurant, located just a few metres from Vigo’s maritime promenade and named after his mother-in-law, he offers guests a fun, liberating and informal dining experience that he hopes will re-awaken their emotions and memories. He offers two enticing tasting menus (Esencia Maruja and Maruja en Estado Puro), on which locally sourced Galician ingredients are the undoubted stars of the show." - Michelin Inspector

An absolut treat visiting Maruja Limon and it's professional staff. The interior is formal and nice, noise is lively and cosy and you can see tables the front kitchen from some tables. Service is efficient without being rushed. Food was amazing, imaginative, playful and tasted great. Maybe the meat dish needed a doover, especially the dark sauce, which was a bit granny in consistency. The wineparing was delicious and very interesting, and both our waiters knew all the wines. Definitely worth its price and Michelin star.

They have two tasting menus. I would recommend the larger one. You can let them know before you go, if there’s things you can’t eat, as the menus are pre-selected for you. One of the best meals we have ever had. Service is great. Atmosphere is perfect too.

A really interesting and unique experience. We had the Esencia Maruja menu and it was plenty. We didn’t try with the wine selection but we will next time. I loved not knowing what was coming next. The service was great. You are asked about allergies beforehand and if there is anything you don’t eat. I was a bit nervous because I’m not too brave but steak tartar was as out there (for me) as it got. Can’t fault a thing. We’ll be back 😊

Well worth the money for this high quality and delicious lunch. Julianna was the perfect hostess/server.

I appreciated the dining experience and the food, but considering the 1 Michelin star, it didn't quite reach the level of amazement for me. The service was polite but wasn't overly warm or attentive. We did the €80 tasting menu which consisted of 3 snacks (included bread as a snack), 4 dishes, 1 dessert and petit fours). My favourites were the salmon with avocado and monkfish. Some of the other dishes were too rich and flavours lacked balance, and I would've expected more for a restaurant of this calibre.

Incredible menu and wine pairing. We would come back anytime the eyes closed.

Lovely dinner, certainly Michelin star level, in an almost cozy and attractive small space. Seafood features, as expected in Vigo, but beef and desserts were also outstanding.

It's a well worn phrase in reviews to say 'the best food I've ever had' but what I can say about Maruja Limon is I've definitely had nothing better, especially when it comes to tasting menus. Very playful and surprising, with a twist! It's also a measure of a restaurant and it's chefs when they can adapt so quickly and effortlessly. As we sat down the maitre'd asked if we had any allergies and we came back with our stock answer 'Nothing. Oh, except squid ink' (for my wife). She laughed and we quickly guessed why: one of the many small dishes was going to feature it. She said not to worry and they would swap it out. To this day we still have no idea what was the replacement dish because Every. Single. Dish. was truly exquisite, kicking off with four immaculately bedecked leaves from a local coastal plant that tasted exactly like... oysters! And so the experiences continued until we got to the end - with magical homemade petit fours. And the twist... that just wasn't the end. Two dessert tastes were then brought out, accompanied by the lightest (local) sweet wine 'I have ever tasted' 😉 Cheque please! (See you next year x) PS. Tried to take a few pics but the dishes taste waaaaay better.
