"Like many of the hippest bars in town, Mary’s is intentionally hard to find. As you make your way down King Street, hang a right on Mary Street and look for a bar on the left with no sign and a rocker crowd. Inside the two-story tavern, a chalkboard menu lists enough craft beers (including the house-brewed Slayer Juice), wines, spirits, and cocktails to require a second chalkboard for fried chicken and burgers (known as the best in town). Get your birds by the half, whole, or “Larry style”—two whole birds deep fried with mash and gravy—and your burger with “trashcan bacon.” Mary’s also does a bacon Bloody Mary with American cheese melted over the rim of the glass that’s more than worth a try."

Took my nephew for a feed at Mary’s for his 13th birthday the other week. He’s just starting to discover metal so figured it would be the perfect joint for him, plus I love the chicken burgs so no brainer really. It was a bit of a mind explosion for the two 13 year old boys especially as the music was about 12 notches heavier than what they had ever heard before 🤣. We had one classic hot dog for one of the boys, which was huge, a chicken burger for the other and I went with the spicy chicken burger which I hadn’t had before. Spice level was perfect for me, just enough but no ring burn the next day! I’d had plenty of Mary’s burgers when they had the hole in the wall in the city so was good to finally get to the OG spot, even though a tad on the pricey side it never disappoints.

Google
Still serving up top quality burgers and beers after all these years, and they've added hot dogs and amazing crunchy chicken nuggs to the menu. Service and atmosphere are top notch. Mary's is iconic

Google
Mary's by far has the best Cheeseburger that I have ever eaten, not only in Sydney, but the whole world. I'm not sure what sort of magic they do in the kitchen, but their Cheeseburger takes me to a very special place. I like that it's not overly greasy like a lot of burgers you get nowadays, but it still maintains a nice juiciness in the meat. 10/10 for me hands down. If you want the best burger in the world, this is it.

Google
Sick and twisted, this home away from home provided the perfect place for me to scheme and plot my way up the corporate ladder. I ordered a hotdog Chicago-style, and like its namesake I found the dog both windy and served with a giant silver bean in its centre. Five stars!

The staff was sooo kind and the taste of burger/fries/chicken was amazing !!! And I really loved the interior design // also the atmosphere full of rock music :) It was fantastic experience I really wanna visit again

Google
Unassuming from the outside but what a cool vibe. Really liked the music, not many places have this atmosphere + great food. The staff were so accommodating and lovely, we were lucky enough to get a table quickly after ordering a drink. We had the Mary's burger with an extra patty and bacon, the cauliflower burger (both came with fries) and shared a half cauliflower side with mayo and szechuan sauce. Absolutely unreal, stuffed and happy!

We ordered Uber Eats tonight and frankly, Maccas is better. The cheeseburger was flat and no better than a Maccas one but it cost $24. The chips were half full. My husband bacon and cheese burger was the size of a junior burger, and his chips were also half full. For $60 in total, it was disappointing.

Google
Burger - 6/10 Fries - 10/10 Nuggets - 1/10 Gravy - 1/10 Marys burger - the smash patty is quality beef, on the fattier side with a coarse ground, bun was super fresh but overall it missed depth of flavour in both the sauce and seasoning on the patty. 6/10 Fries - well seasoned and cooked with the right amount of crisp 10/10 Gravy - this was definitely made with chicken fat, I could see it solidifying in front of my eyes but it lacked seasoning and was bland - 1/10 Chicken nuggets - these aren't nuggets they are chopped up pieces of thigh. Batter was below average and although it had a kick of heat it didn't have flavour - 1/10 Overall it is so close to being great because the ingredients they use are tier one but it's the attention to detail which let it down.

Yelp
I walked in and Black Sabbath's children of the grave was blasting on the house speakers. I knew I was going to like this place. Full bar, craft beers on tap, demonic murals and sick, twisted graffiti on the walls, sets the tone. Kinda a "filthy hipster" vibe. One of the servers had a tee shirt on that said "eat dick mate" it's like that. And the food. Sick burgers, some of the best in Sydney. Done properly, fried on a griddle, old school. Nice squishy toasted buns. Fucking yum! Fried chicken, their other specialty, equally awesome, offering mashed and gravy. Not sure what Aussie obsession with gravy is all about, but they offer it in portion cups like catsup in the States. WTF? Mary's gravy is worthy of the extra calories to help lube up the crusty, fried chicken. Their have been some mixed reviews about this place, but it's legit in my book, rock on Mary's!

Yelp
I had read only good things about Mary's and being a long time burger lover, I couldn't let another trip to Sydney go by without a visit. We originally walked past the venue, expecting signage or something to point out it's location, but in backtracking our steps down Mary Street and seeing the little white Mary's sign above the door we entered into this dark dingy divey greatness. Such a great venue with two levels of seating, dim lighting, great tunes and welcoming staff. The menu was simple and written on the wall - a choice of two beef burgers and one vego option, along with chicken of varying sizes, plus one side option and one dessert. I went with the cheeseburger and it was almost everything I'd ever wanted. Juicy patty, deliciously soft bun, melting cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard, along with a serve of fresh salty french fries. I truly wish I could give a half star on Yelp because this burger deserves 4.5 stars. The only thing they lose a star for is a lack of secret sauce. A great burger needs its own secret house sauce. For all I know, that may have come on the Mary's burger and that was a bad life choice on my part, but I can only review on what I sampled! It has been a while between good burgers, let alone great ones, I'm just sad that this place is interstate and I can't visit more often.

Yelp
Ahh, the famous Mary's burgers... The stuff (delicious) dreams are made of. The burgers are consistently juicy, beefy and melt-in-your-mouth. The patty is sufficiently meaty but not overly thick. The cheese and Mary's sauce complement the meatiness while the classic lettuce and tomato combo gives a nice crunch. You could even opt for some bacon to top it off. The service is prompt and the music deafening. The place gets packed during weekdays and damn packed during weekends. The bar is nicely stocked with local craft beers and cocktails too. Slayer juice on tap takes the cake. I could go on, but honestly it's simpler to say it's damn good.

Yelp
Call me a stuck up American, but how is this place serving the best burger in Sydney? The fries were soggy and it wasn't any different from Mcdonald's fries and the burger was meh. It didn't have a good sauce and the meat wasn't even medium rare. It's pretty overpriced given that it has the quality of a fast food burger. Since the setup is a speakeasy, I'm assuming this is the drunk food of choice in Newtown. Maybe after a couple of beers and shots I'll realize how "amazeballs" this burger is. Don't come here on a Sunday afternoon sober.

Yelp
Burgers? Yeah! Fried Chicken? Yeah! Craft brews? Yeah! Whiskey? YEAH! Metal tunes? HELL YEAH! I heard along the grapevine that a couple of metalheads ran this place and I had to check it out. Just off the King Street in Newtown, you will see an old white looking building with a massive line up outside. It was Wednesday at around 7pm when I arrived and there was a line up of around 30 people to get in and then another line up to get into the dining area upstairs. That impressed me for sure! Just note if you can manage to get a table downstairs you can order food from the bar. This place is definitely now one of my fave eat outs in Sydney. It's a grungy, dive bar, burger station with a awesome selection of craft brews and whiskey's. The writing on the menu is written in a Slayer style font, there are skeletons on the walls and the staff are really laid back. It's a metalhead's dream to find a place like this. After waiting for a while to get upstairs (don't worry, you can get some brews for your wait); we were seated in the attic style restaurant. It's pretty dark up there with candles for a little bit of light. No worries though, you know what you are getting for food. Burger & chicken. The menu is on the roof, look up! The burgers here are like a typical American style in&out burger. Nothing complicated. But, damn tasty! Great seasoning in that patty, juicy and not overcooked. The Mary's Burger is a beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese. You can add bacon if you like. Very good! It comes with thin fries (similar to Maccas) in a basket. We also had to order a whole fried chicken. Chicken was meant to taste this good. Southern fried style and so juicy. Best served with beer and high fives! As for the tunes (which was an important part of the experience for me) it was a little hit and miss. First up I heard some Strapping Young Lad, then some Korn, Slayer..... but then it went into some pop/dance music. Hmmmmm..... that was a little weird? Look, when you go into a place like this you are going to expect to hear some heavy tunes. Come on, there is a big demon on the wall?! I think it's important to stay true to what you love and not try to appeal to all audiences. From what I could see, the patrons were lovers of all different styles of music. They were totally just there for burgers. But, playing those pop tunes with metal is just going to upset your metal brothers and sistas! Apart from that, LOVE THIS PLACE!

Yelp
If dark, electric, moody and amazing food is for you then come to Mary's. Had the cheeseburger and it was just like that I have had in American dinners in the states! The bartender was amazing with giving us a full glass of cider and ice on the side. As he said, why take up space with ice! Cannot agree more with him.

Yelp
Mary's is rad. Pretty simple reasons that make it my "kind of place". 1) They play cool music, and play it loud. 2) The place is dark like my favorite metal night spots from the 90's and 2000's, full of heavy metal style street art and slayer type font for all the menus 3) The burgers are awesome American styled and tasty 4) The fried chicken is everything KFC wishes it was. Quality and amazing taste. Hot sauce was on hand for some punch. 5) The staff were really nice, happy to be there and cool. 6) They have a great beer selection It was worth the wait in both lines we had to wait in. I'll definitely return.

Yelp
This joint had been on my bucket list for months and finally decided to pay it a visit while it was bucketing down in Newtown on an early Saturday evening (pardon the pun!) A dark, industrial establishment with music cranked up a tad too high with aggressive metal. Mary's was completely packed to the brim!!! Ground level filled with locals enjoying pub drinks, while hungry patrons enduring 30 min+ plus waits on the second level to feast on their small, but ever popular menu. Was little disappointed on the burger front though. The 'Mary's Burger' was nothing too spesh in my eyes!! Expected more tbh. The sure-fire winner was the Boneless Fried Chicken. Shared a half bird with a mate and it was finger-lickin' good!!! Little bit pissed when my burger came out with bacon (I didn't ask for it!) however the wait staff made up for it by bringing back a new one within minutes. They also gladly scrapped it off the bill - that was a warm gesture. If it wasn't for the burger stuff up and deafening music - they would have got 4 stars from me.

Yelp
If you have time to wait, this place is awesome. The staff are laid back, chatty and friendly. The Bloody Mary is like nothing I've seen and comes with cheese, bacon and a pickled onion. The burger was also good albeit more expensive and slightly less good than jacks Newtown but still the 2nd best burger I've had and that includes in and out burger. The venue is cool and unique and even though they forgot our cutlery even despite us asking for some, I won't hold it against them. I'd go back!

Yelp
M is for the Munchies. M is for Magnificent. M is for MmMMMmmmm and M is for Mary's. Found on Mary Street (of course) in Newtown, this place has been making the rounds as the next best thing. The vibe is loud, cool, and hip, plus the service great. The menu is simple: burgers, fries, fried chicken, and mash+gravy. You get the option of a cheeseburger (cheese, pickles, tomato sauce,) Mary's burger (cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo,) and shroom burger (for the veggos.) You can add extras to each burger, either a double patty, trashcan bacon (streaky bacon HELL YES,) or the burger double down style, meaning two patties with no bun. With the fries you can ask for shoestring or thick cut. For the fried chicken, half chicken comes with 5 pieces, and a full chicken comes with 10 pieces. The Larry Bird is two full chickens. Some have said it's the best burger in Sydney...and well, It's pretty damn good. If you're all about the no frills, greasy type burger then this will be THE BEST greasy burger in Sydney. If you like gourmet burgers, head to Rockpool. The Mary's burger is mouth-watering tasty...it's just...right. You need to get this with the trashcan bacon, and if you're hungry I'd order a double patty. The cheeseburger is like a McDonald's cheeseburger on steroids (a good thing.) The fried chicken...it's Southern style (USA Southern) with hints of celery and spice. It's extremely tender and the skin peels right off. If you've ever had Bojangles, it's kind of like that. It's awesome. My only gripe is that at $14 a burger, or $21 for streaky bacon + a double patty, it's on the pricey side, especially since the burgers aren't that large. But damn...is it tasty.

Yelp
Not all burgers are created equal. The range of offerings in this category is vast, and this is why I find it so hard to rate them against one another. I like the Grill'd mushroom burger and its Mediterranean glory - herb pesto, roast peppers and greenery in a wholesome brown bun. But I also like Chur Burger, their sweet house made brioche and clever filling combos. Mary's burger is not a Grill'd nor is it a Chur. Its classic dirty-good American. A treat yourself once in a while kind of burger. Its definitely not good for you, but sweet Mary is it tasty. The beef pattie - pink inside with a strong meaty flavour - welds with the collapsing bun, melting cheddar and juicy tomato...my mouth is watering just remembering it! Some Yelpers have complained its too small, but I thought it was just right. They also do Southern fried chicken - the smell of celery salt spice fills out the room. If you only order one thing though, make it the Mary's Burger. We checked out the chicken, but found it a pinch overdone and agreed the burger was the way to go. Staff are a bit blahzay, but the bar itself is cool. Dark and moody and a little Goth. The kind of setting I imagine Buffy would meet Willow and Xander at for beers, and then kick some vampire butt down an alleyway afterward.

Yelp
My Goodness, where do I begin? I have no words for the awesomeness that is this place. And that is coming from someone who had to line up 30 mins for a burger. I don't recall ever lining up that long for a burger before, but it was worth it. When my friend and I got to Mary Street and spotted the massive queue going down te block on a Friday night, I walked up to the bouncer and asked if there was any kind of event going on. Nope, he replied, it's like this most nights. The guys at the start of the line encouraged me and my friend to get in line because the 'burgers were amazing and definitely worth the wait'. And they were. While we waited in line, a nice surprise: waiters came out with bowls of hot chips that we could munch on - they were hot and fresh and definitely helped the wait on that cold winter's night. 30 mins passed and we were in, fortunately it didn't take us long to get a table. We both ordered the Mary's burger (I got mine with the trashcan bacon), plus half a bird to share and cocktails. Now I'm not a big burger person, and the main reason for that is the fact that I don't enjoy the massive, solid buns that most places use for their burgers. These buns, however, were perfect for my taste: soft, squishy and easy to flatten. A lot of people have mentioned the burgers taste like Maccas and I think they really are a bit similar, probably because of the mayo sauce. The chicken was amazing as well, perfectly coated and a bit spicy. Combined that with awesome cocktails and great music in the background (rock and roll, baby!) and you've got yourself a winner. Mary's, you rock.

Yelp

Yelp
Hidden off the main road, down a side street with the word "Mary's" in hand writing on the wall outside the entrance. I wouldn't have known it was there if I hadn't had Google maps and read about it in the "top 10 burger places in Sydney" BUT that's what's so good about it! The cheeseburger with Trash can bacon was good however it was made better by the cool atmosphere, a very laid back place with a very cool "I don't give a f***" vibe and I loved that! Graffiti and art all over the walls with drawings from what looks like has been left there by patrons of the past. Music was quite loud and a little hard to have a conversation however the choice of music was on point, I would definitely go back for drinks with friends and to try their fried chicken which looked mouth watering good!

Yelp
The minute you go in, nevermind that, even when trying the find the place, you will realise that this isn't your typical hipster trendy joint. It's more like an American bikey underground cult. Underground, because it's extremely dark and cult - you will understand when you see the decor. The bar's wall looks like an alter with a prominent portrait of Pierre Marco White at the centre surrounded by liquor bottles as you would see a portrait of Jesus surround by candles in a church. The informal service and heavy metal music even mysterious girl is loud but does fit well with the theme. There is ample seating consisting of small 4 seater table and high tables too. Orders are placed at the bar and the Kurt Cobain waiter might seem disinterested but he is real and skillfull - able to balance 8 sets of burgers on a tray. MARY'S BURGER $14 Mary's Burger is the closest burger to Melbourne's Huxtaburger and probably most accurately described as the most authentic American burger - no brioche bun, no aioli, no beetroot in sight. I like it a lot: the soft bun melts in the mouth, the beef patty is firm but still moist and the salad fresh but no crunch and this seems to be intended to not interfere with the burger. Overall the texture and flavours work well together. The shoestring fries were cooked perfectly, just imagine freshly fried Maccas fries but twice as good and a little thinner and with free flow ketchup. HALF BIRD $18 One of the best friend chicken I've had in a while. Why is it worth the price? it's de-boned where it is annoying but kept in the drumsticks and wings. The chicken is cooked to perfection; moist inside that above average thick battered skin without being oily or feeling oily in the mouth. Even the breast pieces were succulent and moist which is always a good sign of quality execution. The spices in the batter might be too overwhelming for some but I liked it. Conclusion Their image is underground, no bullshit and not the place to bring out your parents type place. The service is of course not exceptional/conventional but it fits the theme and adds to the experience, however their customer service was tested when they got my order wrong, no fuss was made, waiter came up to say "we f***** up" with apologies and fixed it with the error in my favour with no extra charge and I was very satisfied how it was dealt with. The food is the star: classic American staples executed perfectly with personality. There are also lots of cocktails on offer but didn't try any at this time around. @thesydneynoob

Yelp
My oh my, what a great find! Flew in from the Philippines and I was craving a burger so bad! Even though this place was about 20 mins away from me, from all the reviews I read, I had to go here. It was a bit hard to find. I didn't know it would be in the middle of a dark alleyway and there wasn't a big sign showcasing its location. Honestly, I felt a little scared to walk in. Once I found the door, my whole perspective changed. The decor is a little dark, with devils and skull decorations all over. The menu is written on the wall on the main floor as well as the upper floor. Once the aroma of burgers hit my nose, I knew I picked the right place. Got the Mary's burger and woooo. I was happy. The burger was the perfect amount of thickness, with the right amount of juiciness. Enough to make your tongue quiver, but not be drenched in juices shortly after. Oh and please do not get me started on those fries! Thin and soooo crispy! It was like Mcdonald's fries with In-n-Out's freshness. Can't get past that! I wish they were here in the States. :(

Yelp
The day I went to Mary's was a great day. I got a birthday cake at work (3 months late). It was a face cake. The face was Pippi Longstockings. With her pet monkey. 3 people asked if it was me as a kid. And Mary's was my birthday dinner. I love a birthday dinner at any time of the year but this one was special and Mary's made it so (the cake helped). We arrived at 7pm on a Thursday to no line. "This can't be!", we exclaimed as we walked in. It wasn't. Cleverly and deceptively, Mary's has moved the line inside. We joined at the bottom of the stairs. Nothing like a drink to ease the wait so my dear friend and Birthday dinner buyer went to the bar. Suddenly she was gesticulating excitedly and motioning me over. No! I can't leave the line, are you crazy?! But her waving arms just got wavier so I went over in case they fell off. What's this? Two seats at the bar? Best belated birthday. Ever. We sat down with our lovely cocktails. I can't remember what it was called but I think it had blood orange and ordered the whole menu. Don't look at me like that. It's three items. We had the Mary's burgers with chips. Shared half a chicken and shared the mash. All were pretty good but need the hot sauce. I'd read some pretty scathing reviews online about the service here but I thought it was fine. The bartender did try to convince us that the picture of Marco Pierre White behind the bar was the guitarist from Coldplay but we had his number. When it was time to leave I felt positively beatific giving our seats to two girls who also couldn't believe their luck. As I was heading off I looked down and saw my week's affirmation on the bottom of a fridge, "Don't be shit". I'll try Mary's, I'll try.

Yelp
Trudging down a laneway in the pouring rain i was wondering where I'd been taken to when I saw two very satisfied patrons emerge from an unmarked slightly dilapidated building and I knew we'd arrived. Walking though the entrance into Mary's the smell of burgers and fried chicken was enough to wet the apetite of two very hungry and slightly hungover travellers who'd crossed town to eat at this Sydney institution. You could be forgiven for thinking that you'd walked into a dive bar in Brooklyn or New Orleans and the food is on par. The menu is simple burgers served with French fries and fried chicken. The burger variations aren't complex either .., cheeseburger, Mary's burger (lettuce and tomatoe) and vegetarian with the option of double meat and cheese or trash can bacon. We opted to share half a bird (smallest serving of fried chicken) and get a burger each. The chicken was delicious. Now I'm not typically a fried chicken kind of girl I'm usually the one eating it poached or grilled but this was super tasty and not to be missed. The breast was succulent and juicy whilst the exterior was crunchy but only lightly battered. Best of all it's served piping hot straight from the fryer. The burger was equally as good with super soft brioche buns and a delicious sauce. I had bacon with mine and have to say that it was a great decision. But when is bacon not a good decision? I'm glad I was hungry as I could enjoy the food and have both chicken and a burger. It felt like being transported back to the US. Mary's is first and foremost a bar but there is a steady stream of people coming for food including families with children and others grabbing take away. There are plenty of drinks options including cocktails, and wine but the bar seems to call for beer or whiskey. There is an eating area upstairs and downstairs with upstairs having more of a diner feel. All I can say is next time I'm in Sydney this will be on my to do list for sure.

Yelp
First visit to Marys as a bloody mary fan. Was enthusiastic about their with cheese and bacon on top. Nice atmosphere great bubbly staff awesome vibe. Will be back. Deducted 1 star as i wasnt fond of the bloody mary being 50% orange juice, i like it all tomato juice and extra spicy. Savoury as its meant to be. Otherwise great.

Yelp
There's this relatively new thing called Ice Cream Sanga. Hats off to whoever came up with that. Salted peanuts, vanilla ice cream, caramel and chocolate in a bread bun - For $5, this was definitely my top "just take my money" moments. If anyone has been here you know it's impossible to take a decent food photo, you'll just have to trust me.

Yelp
Mary's burger is just simply a good burger that can satisfy any burger cravings. It was juicy, messy and just the right portion size! The burger also comes with a generous amount of fries. The restaurant itself is a yellow building hidden behind a lot of graffiti art, at night time you can tell you've arrived by the red light lit at the entrance. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Well I did not expect this! After being lured here with the promise of the best burgers in Sydney, I successfully identified the unsigned building sporting a rouge light over the door, expecting to find inside a Melbournesque herd of smug hipsters. Instead, I immediately thought I had stumbled into a bikie bar. Loud metal music and graffitied walls give the place a certain ambience. Not that I don't like it, I just didn't expect it. But it's cool. Think more Frankie's than Hells Angels. I was going to have a burger, but how could I pass up the opportunity to have half a bird? And they were true to their word: a breast, a wing, a thigh, and a drumstick, all deep fried in Southern goodness. Washed down with a Newtowner on tap. It is on the pricey side, but what isn't these days? Shame they don't have white meat on the menu, or even just wings. Either would keep me coming back more often.

Yelp
Yes. It is an awesome burger. Now that I got that out of the way, I can share my story. Hearing "The Best burger in Sydney" is a pretty solid selling point. So we went to check it out on a Saturday. We got in early so we didn't have to queue (it was quite large when we left) and we really enjoyed our stay there. The decoration is pretty cool and the menu plain and straightforward. Burger, Chicken or Veggie. The music may be a tad too loud at some points but al and all, a fun experience. Best burger? Not so sure. But yes, it is awesome. The hype is real.

Yelp
It was with some trepidation that this princess went along to Marys, but I loved it! My hubby surprised me with a Valentine's Day date and after much guessing and nagging he spilled the beans, this was not what I was expecting for my American burger night out! I read up about heavy metal music, looked up the cocktail list (nup nothing for me) saw the online photo of the street view and thought WHAT IS HE THINKING?? We arrived, to be greeted by a small line up and a long haired dude (a waiter) singing along to 'fresh prince of bel air'! Mmmmm what is happening here..... My resolve is softening....... This place is awesome!!! First things first - the burgers, fries, chicken and ice cream sanga I have been craving since I visited - delicious unpretentious and served in a basket! The music, is not all heavy metal..... A great mix of styles - so don't be put off by the heavy metal write up - as I was. There was a cocktail perfect for me! It seems the list is updated regularly - if not there is always beer and wine! No Kids allowed - which is nice for a change!! The clientele is an eclectic bunch from couples, students, hipsters and groups of friends - it's a really nice vibe with a relaxed atmosphere - I needn't have worried about what to wear as there were shorts and thongs a plenty!! Looking forward to going back......

Yelp
I'll start with the good. The food is fantastic. I used to go here when I lived in Sydney years ago when It first opened. Burgers haven't changed and the service has improved a little. The down fall is how the place is run. You can't sit where you like (even on a quite Monday night), You can't halve a very simple bill, Menus are written on the wall with no prices for cocktails or details about the food whats in the burger what it comes with etc, its take a long time to get served however once you do get served you do get your food and drink quite quickly. This is a great place for take away food not great to be in there and have to be served by the staff.

Yelp
Mary Mary quite contrary haha :)! Used to be a regular 2 visits a week kinda guy .. sometimes for a late night feed while at work and then also the occasional out on the town feed with a mate :D!! Everytime i go here its busy as !! So i always opt for walk in, order my grub and walk out and eat it in the park close by or on a park bench with wide eyed onlookers seeing me go to townon my meal :D!! I've always been a big eater and used to be a popular eating challenge kinda guy in the ole days but now i eat till I'm content :D Always grab me a half a bird, with soggy chips & a soggy burger :D! The chicken is finger licken good :)!! Soggy chips are soggy chips lol .. i lol when peoples opinions are like i thought they would of had a better taste... nope ;)!! Last but not least the burger is a tasty Soggy, Greasy burger.. i enjoy the burger but it's no where near a cotender for the best burger in Sydney town :D!! This place serves up a good tasty feed .. the chicken is the only thing that lures me back and my soggy burger & chips are considered my sides to my tasty bird haha!!

Yelp
Fantastic! I went to Mary's for the first time and I wasn't disappointed! The food was amazing and the atmosphere was incredible Mary's has a pretty small menu but everything is delicious! The burgers are great, the fries are awesome and the chicken wings are to die for! I truly recommend visiting Mary's at Newtown.. Best burgers in town

Yelp
Having previously worked at the Mecca of Burgers (In-N-Out) in California and the fact that my sister is now a store manager for In-N-Out, I have to say Mary's is... AMAZING, OUT OF THIS WORLD, BEST BURGER IN... AUSTRALIA! The fact that Mary's is one the of best burgers and its tucked on a back alley under a red light with no logo just adds to the incredible journey this burger will take your taste buds on! Every thing about the burger, from the buns to the sauce is fresh and made the way you order it. My only complaint is that the buns need to be toasted a bit more, but then again that is a personal preference that I am sure next time I go they will have no issue doing for me. While all of us got burgers my dad (visiting from the US) got the fried Chicken, and it was up to par with the burgers! Perfectly fried and just the right amount of juiciness. My mouth is watering just thinking about this burger, I think I gotta go get one right now!

Yelp
Always epic. Consistent food. Creative drinks. Kooky service and rock and roll style bathrooms. Now back to the food. Worlds best burger. Excellent aged meat, gooey yet tasty cheese and a milk bun. Brioche is for babies. This is a grown persons burger joint.

Yelp
Delicious! Best burgers! I've been to Mary's about 7 times. Each time I have brought someone new with me. I have converted a few people now the burgers aren't massive which suits me perfectly. I am a cheeseburger fan and this is the best cheese burger I've ever had ever! I've tried the marys burger, the cheese burger and the fried chicken.... All yummy! The queue looks daunting but I've never lined up for more than 20 mins and if you're in the line up on the stairs inside you can get your friend to grab you a drink while you wait for your table. The waiters are fun, they occasionally dance... The music is loud and ranges from hip hop to death metal. The building use to be a STI clinic... you won't regret a visit to Marys!

Yelp
Please don't come to this place. With all their damn burgers, beer, and bar men. Their damn music, dim lighting. Candles. Ugh. There's a good reason the venue is more or less hidden from your typical tourist: this gem demands a greedy loyalty from locals, who just want to relax and eat possibly the best chicken of their lives. (Over, and over again) I rate Mary's Newtown five out of five, well poured pints of Newtowner.

Yelp
I had heard a lot of good things about these burgers so I decided to come and try it! Mary's is located on Mary's lane, there is no visible signage and the outside has graffiti on it... So it could be easy to miss! Inside the lighting is dim and the music is load. The menu (both drinks and food) is painted onto the wall. I tried the Mary's burger which comes with fries and the fried chicken! The burger was the stand out with soft bun, smokey flavored beef patty, Mary's mayo, lettuce and tomato. The chips are served simple with no seasoning so you need to add salt or sauce to jazz them up! The fried chicken was a tasty surprise - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside with a hint of a chilli kick! The cocktails are around $15-20 each.. I ordered the Malibu Daiquiri - it wasn't amazing but certainly complemented the burger! All in all I was a happy camper when I left :)

Yelp
There's a lot of hype about Mary's. The best burger in Sydney is a big call. You could easily walk past the entrance and not realise this place even existed. Make your way past the bouncer and follow the noise until you're inside. The place looks very cool. We took a seat up stairs and had our order taken pretty quickly. The food rocked up within a few minutes. Burgers and fries served in baskets. The burgers can only be described as a kind of posh version of maccas. The texture is very much maccas. The taste is pretty bloody good though! If you're in the area, give it a go.

Yelp
Mary's is pumping. What a place to go! Well worth the trip if you're not from the area. The food is Ah-May-Zing, the beers are a good craft variety to choose from. Overall this is a solid burger joint. Don't forget to try the chicken... it's better than Finger Lickin Good!

Yelp
At first I was bemused about a hipster nest. Some of my friends gave it the stamp of approval and therefore it needed mine. Im that competitive! The decor reminds me of an old men's Hall where they'd come and play cards and darts, but one where they spent a butt-tonne of money on it, and without the old man mothball smell. There is a dart board. The quality of the darts are professional, even. Just a shame that the lights get dimmed after 6 or 7 and you'd need Xmen vision to keep playing. I can't tell if you're actually supposed to play, or if it's just to look cool on the wall. I can't begin to imagine how packed this place would get on the weekends. We were there on a Monday and the people kept streaming in. The reputation of those burgers and fried chicken has spread far and wide. The topic of these burgers being compared to Maccas has, in my opinion gone off the rails a little here. Firstly the burgers are flipping Amazeballs (as hipsters would say) and if you've had a Maccas burger as good as this then.... wow! Please tell me where that Maccas is, because dayum! Breaking it down I can safely say I've tried every thing on the food menu. The buns they use are from Bread Top. If you've had Bread top you'll know those buns are like dessert buns. Sugary and glazed and super soft. Secondly the burgers are made directly to order. They are cooked medium rare to perfection, they make their own mayonnaise based sauce which, I can safely say I can kinda still taste the next day even after several tooth brushings. The Mary's burger is, if your imagination can't go any further than Maccas, similar to a McFeast. Lettuce, tomato and the mayo sauce. The cheeseburger is what it says it is. Mouthwatering but does well with a bit of added hot sauce. The Shroom burger was actually better than either of them. If you're a vego you are just gonna love it. Having been vego for 10 years and I had a vego friend with me, we both can say flip yeah! You have to try it. All come with perfectly cooked fries. Just the right amount and type of food you want when you're on the booze. The chicken is like kfc, but a zillion times better. Get the mash n gravy to dip it in and you can soak up the internal booze fest you can have here. Peruse the chalk boards for a wide selection of beverages. Including Moobrew. A Tasmanian unpasteurized beer. An awesome high end selection of spirits and wines. If you try any drinks at all, I emplore you to try "Slayer juice". You'll be pleasantly surprised by the strange brew that is like an ice coffee stout. It is the glam rock of dark beer. Best nights are likely to be weekdays, and if you don't see the doorway at first. Put on your lens free hipster glasses, you'll find it.

Yelp
Yummmmmmmmy! I hate to play the "I'm an American living in Sydney & miss American food" card here, but I'm going to have to. For me, this was by far the best burger I've had in Sydney! Not a beetroot in sight. In fact, I don't even think it's on the menu. I had the cheeseburger with trashcan bacon. I'm not really sure what "trashcan" is supposed to imply, but it was crispy, American style bacon and it was heaven. I even brought my parents here (who were visiting from the US) & they were impressed as well. This is definitely my new go to spot when I'm craving a burger! Get in early because it does get busy. If you want to sit upstairs (where they do table service) you need to be in by 6:30 at the latest or you'll probably be waiting.

Yelp
If you are just walking by Mary's, it looks like a crack den from the outside. Don't be fooled. Inside, it's very dimly lit, even in the middle of the day. As your eyes adjust you can finally read the menu painted on the walls. The upstairs seating is a little comfier than the seating downstairs, and seems to be where most people prefer to be during lunch time. I like a restaurant that knows it does a few things well and just has a simple menu. The burgers are good (tried both the beef and the mushroom), and I love the thin cut fries (chips). They also have a decent beer selection. Everything is reasonably priced.

Yelp
Yeah, no. I do not understand the hype behind this joint. The burgers taste mediocre. They're so oily, it just feels like I'm eating lard. $14 for meat, lettuce, cheese, tomato and some buns...right. $12 for the veggie burger with mushroom, lettuce, cheese Do yourself a favour and go to oporto or McDonald's for a burger and fries for half the price. We got there just after 5 and ordered within 5 minutes of getting seated. Our burgers didn't arrive until 6!

Yelp
After everybody and their dog kept telling me there's something about Mary's burgers, I had to check it out for myself because I'm a burger slut (not connoisseur, that implies I have class). The wait may take 20-30 minutes but once you're seated the service is quick and who gives a fuck if they're friendly or not. I came to eat. There's a short menu and they pump out burgers faster than a twenty dollar whore working married men on Forbes St.. and that's about as much as you'll pay (with the absolutely necessary accompanied beer). It's greasy, it's delicious and definitely add the trash can bacon. Side bar. I went on a rainy weekday evening. Wet hipsters smell exactly how you'd expect. I'll be back on a dry night.

Yelp
Firstly you might need a pair of night vision goggles to navigate the darkness that is Mary's and maybe a marker to add to the humorous graffiti found all over the building. The menu is very small but in the most perfect way! Every item on the menu has clearly being perfected down to a delicious meal. The Mary burger is a tasty example of simplicity sometimes being the best, a basic burger with a nice sauce. The fries are about the only lacklustre part of the meal, they aren't bad by any means but just have nothing special going on. Best of all is the music though, a spectacular soundtrack bouncing between death metal, classical music and then great 80's hits. I could sit all day just enjoying the tunes. If you have the time to wait as they don't have a reservation option available it is well worth it.

Yelp
So yeah another place with a burger contained in a brioche bun. Oily burgers with some pickles and cheese. Nothing mind blowing about them. Can't see what the fuss is about. Another hipster ridden place where style is taken over substance. And how expensive! $14 for a simple burger and some french fries. Really not worth it. To cap it off the staff on the door were arrogant and rude. Seriously save yourself the pretentiousness of the place and head to one of the other 50 hipster inspired burger, craft beer, fried chicken places that abound in the inner west these days if you're desperate for your full faced beard ink stained body fix. On the plus side the space is pretty awesome but not awesome enough to warrant a visit.

Yelp
Great new bar in Sydney. Even worth a trip to Newtown (said the girl who rarely leaves her imaginary neighbourhood bubble). The setup is really cool. Love the tall ceilings. It feels really comfortable and spacious. You could actually hear people talking and have a conversation without having to yell. We were there on a week night and most of the tables downstairs were filled, but not sure how crowded it gets on weekends. Love Sydney bars where you can sit at the bar (not a very popular trend in this city for some reason). For food, I'd say it's a simple but effective menu. You can go either burgers of chicken. The burgers are very steak-n-shake style, greasy diner style that comes wrapped in paper. I had the Mary's burger with bacon and really liked that. I need to go back and try the friend chicken. My friend described it was gourmet KFC. I don't think it's for people on diets.

Yelp
Okay, Mary's double patty burger and fried chicken has won me over. Plus, the staff are lovely and the atmosphere is hopping. Yeah, it's not cheap, but it is quality food.

Yelp
The last time I went to Mary's, I ordered two burgers. Two. That is how good they are. That being said, if you want to be able to do things like, for example, talk without shouting? Yeah, good luck with that. Get there before 6 and its fine. But by 6:30 it is LOUD. And BUSY. But for (arguably) the best burgers in Sydney, totally worth it.

Yelp
I heard so much about this place so had to check it out. The location was really hidden but it made it special and kinda like a local would no where it is. As walking in the vibe was really good as they play heavy metal and was spectacular. We were waited on really quickly and they brang our drinks out right away. I ordered the mary burger and it was unreal! Get the double though!!! 5/5

Yelp
I tried to call to speak to the management regarding my experience (Mostly positive) before I rate them, but the (02) 4995-9550 phone number that they have published on both their website and Yelp is no good, and the website presented me with the "NOT FUNNY AT ALL" comment, presented by a couple of xyzabc characters!!!! I hope they hadn't touched my food! Attached a screenshot! Otherwise, the food was alright :)

Yelp
This place is pretty hard to find as it's tucked away in a dodgy looking street with no sign or indication that this is actually a bar/restaurant. But the inside is super hip and busy, and the loudness and lighting makes for a very cool, casual atmosphere. I came for the burgers because I'd seen them on a list of Sydney's best burgers. The Mary's burger was good, but not amazing.

Yelp
Great expensive burgers, great expensive chicken, average priced beer. Crap music unless you like grunge / metal. Friend of a friend knows a chef here and said that they put MSG in the burgers hence the great taste.
