Mary Coyle – Sedona, Arizona - Gastro Obscura

"When Mary Coyle moved to Phoenix from Ohio in 1951, she brought a knack for making ice cream with her from the midwest. Her namesake parlor, Mary Coyle Ol’ Fashion Ice Cream, continues to survive and thrive in a smaller, nearby location, 72 years later. At 16% butterfat, the ice cream itself is ultra-rich and is still made on-site to this day using the original recipes that first made Mary a success. Not only are the options premium, but they’re also expansive. The variety of flavors—an unexpected feature for a classic ice cream parlor—is a thrill in and of itself. Choose from a wide range of popular and nostalgic flavors, from black raspberry to black licorice, spumoni to burgundy cherry. Carefully sourced ingredients, such as the nuts in the butter pecan and maple walnut flavors sourced from Mount Hope, in Sedona, make each scoop shine. The new location’s checkerboard floors, neon soda fountain sign, and pink-striped walls (which harken back to the original location) let you know you’re in for a deliciously sweet time travel session. Know Before You Go While the ice cream doesn't need any additions, it's hard to go wrong with the maraschino-crowned milkshakes or the over-the-top sundaes." - rachelrummel, j3taylor, cdanesh

Let me first start by saying, Mary Coyle, Munds Park is the largest employer of young adults (teens) in the area. They (teens) work long hours and do an amazing job all summer long. We stopped in for ice cream and were greeted by a smiling young man who ensured we knew what flavors they had and any new ones for the week. The young woman who checked us at the register out was nothing short of professional. Yes, I am getting to the ice cream.. It was delicious & on a warm day in the pines, there is nothing better than a scoop of my favorite ice cream (my daughters had sundaes and had so many choices for toppings). This community is lucky to have this small business, operating in a little town off the I-17. If you have not stopped there you should. Exit 322 on the way up or down from Flagstaff on the west side of the freeway.

1st time here. It was well worth the stop. The two young ladies working were very friendly. Service with a smile. The ice cream was great. The serving size was well priced. Wish we would've stopped in sooner.

I can't in good faith recommend a chocolate malt - mine was hardly blended. From the reaction of the staff, it didn't sound like chocolate malts were their favorite thing to make. Which makes sense, like, washing a blender cup is kind of a pain when the line's out the door. If you're seeking to optimize price to portion, I recommend getting regular scoops of ice cream!

the boys working sunday night were more interested in the teenage girls and unfocused on their line. total was $17 something gave them a $20 didn’t receive change.. was going to tip the change anyway.. whatever.. then made my kids malt as a shake she heard them whispering about the mistake but didn’t offer to fix it. very disappointed in the hiring decisions.

I grew up loving Mary Coyle and was so happy to visit the one in Munds! It’s the same great ice cream and service! I highly recommend it! Ethan is the sweetest too. He really knows his ice cream.

Great service today at the shop!! Great ice cream!! Used to visit Mary Coyle’s when I worked downtown Phoenix 30 years ago. Missed out on the peppermint chip today… will definitely have to go next weekend 🙂. Def visit the next time you are in town!!

Really good ice cream. Was in Munds for a couple days. Not a ton to pick from locally in Munds but this place is great. Friendly and clean.

These guys are the best! They have the best REAL authentic homemade ice cream and the best customer service you could ask for. It's definitely my favorite place for a sweet treat. Love you guys! ❤️🍦🍨❤️

Yelp
Total dumpster fire. Disorganized, slow, and out of everything. Here's an idea! Why not mark on your board the 17 flavors you're out of? That way the 27 people in line don't each have to sit there and rattle off what they want only to hear "out of that" for each item. Another idea. As I watched the girl working drop the ice cream scoop on the floor and then picked it up to start using it again I was thinking maybe food handler training could be useful. Totally unprepared for a normal night of business, let alone a busy holiday weekend. Space in Munds Park is so precious, shame it's being wasted.

Yelp
Great cream! Happy they are employing young adults to learn how to work. Big fan of the salted Carmel espresso flavor! We will be back.

Yelp
Mary Coyle is a Phoenix tradition. Ice cream recipes are the same as back in 1951 when the store first opened. Staff is friendly. Location is convenient to downtown excursions, though parking can be a little bit of a challenge when they are busy. They do offer GrubHub and can have orders ready to go when you arrive so you can just pay and go. Plus, my brother owns it.
