I love a good pub, don't you? And since popping into Darky Kelly's in Dublin or the Golden Lion in London is impractical, this place will have to do. And it does!
"In the shadows of the Water Tower sits Mary O'Neill's, home of a great pint, hearty cuisine, set in an atmosphere that feels like home," reads the opening line on their website. And what a wonderful ambiance they set. Happy, noisy, and homey with intoxicating aromas coming from the kitchen. Pull up a stool and have at it, I say.
I suppose they have delicious salads, but I have enough Irish blood in me to blow by the greens and head for the Fish-n-Chips, Irish Stout Stew, or Classic Reuben. And there's Corned Beef and Cabbage, Shepherd's Pie, and a barrage of burgers and other stuff to satisfy the hungriest of your beasts. So good, too.
A few reviews have dissed their French fry potatoes as rubbery, or undercooked. Uh, that's the Irish way so they soak up all that tangy malt vinegar. Pro tip: order your fries double-cooked to get that American crispiness (yes, I double-checked with the owner). Problem solved.
Looking for a place to unwind without hopping a red eye to Dublin? Mary O'Neill's pours a perfect head of Stout on my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. Chill out here.
