Where to Drink Guinness in the Charlotte Area This Holiday Season | Eater

"Downtown Waxhaw, with its lively main street full of bakeries and antique stores, already has that insanely charming small-town feel, as if it was plucked right out of a made-for-TV holiday movie. Add a neighborhood Irish pub pouring pints of Guinness to the mix, and it’s a whole different level of charm. That pub would be Mary O’Neill’s, where the menu is devoted to hearty dishes that transcend typical bar food, like the Reuben egg rolls, soothing beef and stout stew, and bread pudding with a dreamy whiskey caramel drizzle. With occasional live bands and sticker-adorned walls, Mary O’Neills is an eclectic little piece of personality away from the city." - Kayleigh Ruller

Our first time here. Great Irish Pub! The decor and atmosphere are great. Our server Emma was so kind and attentive to our needs. She frequently checked on us. The food was great. The Reuben was huge! The Clara Club was huge also! Both sandwiches were clearly made to order and were fresh. The fries were hot and fresh as well. We split a Blondie with Bailey Irish Ice Cream on top. Great food, great experience, and looking forward to eating there again. Keep up the good work.

First time at this Irish Pub and it was soooo good. I had a few Irish coffees that were beyond delicious and my first ever espresso martini - 🤤. I ended up ordering this burger that had Sriracha mayo and goat cheese and it’s probably one of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time if not ever. This place is sooo good! 10/10 🌟

After a long hike, we happened upon this wonderfully warm and cozy spot in the middle of charming Waxhaw. Restaurant was beginning to fill up as we arrived on a late Friday afternoon. We were impressed at the cleanliness of the interior and were welcomed by a charming hostess and seated immediately. The restaurant is decorated nicely and has high top and booth seating, as well as a nicely adorned bar. Our server was cheerful, very friendly, professional, and made entertaining small talk. She was delightful and was attentive during the entirety of our meal. NZ was pleased that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was on the menu and enjoyed it immensely. Cold water served in a vintage-style glass bottle was a nice touch and was refilled without asking. Although the service and atmosphere were fantastic, we found the food to be a bit lacking. NZ always gets excited when she finds her homeland’s comfort foods on the menu and had difficulty choosing. She ordered a cup of Potato & Leek Soup for an appetizer and the Bangers & Mash for her entree. Unfortunately, she wasn’t impressed with either but enjoyed the Bangers/Mash slightly better than the soup which she wasn’t impressed with at all. She did mention that the accompanying soda bread was good. She’s a tad biased, and perhaps a bit snobbish, when it comes to English/Irish food and has very high standards for these dishes. She grew up eating the best of it so she can be entitled, I suppose. 🙄Additionally, after seeing another customer order the fish and chips , she was happy she didn’t order them because they were not served with “proper chips”. 😳 I chose a healthier option and ordered a large specialty salad with grilled chicken. That was a mistake. There were zero detectable flavors from both the salad or chicken. Although I realize that these salads need to be made in advance and refrigerated, I dislike an ice cold salad. I also dislike unseasoned proteins. Even the suggested dressing was bland and did not help. I feel like I ate nothing and left feeling rather unsatisfied. We’d return again solely to enjoy drinks surrounded by friendly people and employees in this thoughtfully themed restaurant in this lovely town. We’d most likely try a different food option (perhaps the highly rated Rueben) next time around, or just stay for the drink. Slán go fóill!

Stopped in for a late lunch on a Monday. Hostess sat us immediately (it was quiet as expected) and our server was very nice, attentive and friendly. They have a full bar (w/ Guinness of course) and some microbrews available. The restaurant had some nice Irish music playing and sports channel playing on the bar TV. We sat and were given ice cold water in a vintage milk bottle (loved it). It was blistering hot and humid so it was a nice touch. Shepards pie and Rueben with a side of fries and coleslaw was delivered fast and fresh. The pie was delicious and a perfect proportion. It had beef/lamb in a nice thick sauce with peas and carrot topped with the smoothest perfectly mashed potatoes. The rueben was tender, moist and very large in size. The fries were nothing special. Then again, they were just fries. The coleslaw was fresh and crisp but could have used a bit more seasoning. We order chocolate ice cream for dessert that is sourced from the local creamery and was absolutely delicious. Seriously, I would gladly drive the 15 miles to get that ice cream again. All in all a great experience.

We stopped here on our way through Waxhaw, and we're pleasantly surprised. The food was exceptional, and our server was very friendly and attentive. They have a very diverse menu, and the Irish fair is authentic. I definitely recommend Mary O'Reilly if you're in the area.

We love the shepherds pie nachos here! We are even willing to drive an hour to have them. 😅 service was quick and staff are friendly.

Lovely spot. Irish bangers and mash always a hit. Small space but great vibes. I wish their fries/chips were better. Very disappointed with them. Rueben Rolls are bomb dot com

There’s just something about Mary O’Neill’s that feels like coming home. From the moment you step through the doors, the inviting ambiance instantly melts the stress of the day away. It’s cozy, classy, and full of charm- everything a proper Irish pub should be. But the real magic is in the people. The owner, Dennis, is the heart of the place. He greets everyone with genuine warmth, making even first-timers feel like part of the family. The bartenders Connor, Shannon, and Kevin are top-tier! These 3 are personable, attentive, and always ready with a great pour and great sense of humor. It’s rare to find a team that balances professionalism with heart and soul. Highly recommend for anyone seeking authentic Irish hospitality, memorable moments, and a place where you’re always treated like a local- even if it’s your first visit.

Yelp
Hit up Mary O'Neill's for a late afternoon lunch and was not disappointed. We decided to try the Shepherd's Pie and the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. The Shepherd's Pie was fantastic. It was filled with beef, peas, carrots and onions throughout with an even distribution and the mashed potatoes were pillowy goodness. The Buffalo Chicken Wrap was also very good. Great flavor. The service was a bit slow even for a late afternoon. Expected a bit more there but otherwise a great experience and recommend stopping by for a bite.

Yelp
Best place in Waxhaw! Been there since day one. Love the pub atmosphere, the lads are great, the food is consistent and the Guinness is delish!

Michelle S.

Yelp
The food here is amazing. The burgers are so juicy. The burger has a crispy crust on the outside. Be prepared to get messy! Its a good sign when juice is running down your arms. The shepherd's pie was also amazing. The potatoes were exactly what I was craving. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
On a mission to try all of the restaurants in downtown Waxhaw Mary O'Neill's is one of the best we've tried. Everyone is super friendly and the food is great too. They have an outdoor patio with tons of space. We ordered fried pickles to start and fish and chips for our main. Two really, really good choices. The fish was a great size and perfectly battered and fried. I fell in love with the fries that were perfectly seasoned. Will definitely be back to try some of the bigger dishes like the nachos and the bangers and mash.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and the food and selection of beers is good. Our service was a little slow. It wasn't our servers fault she was fantastic but apparently the kitchen was really slow. None the less we still had a great time and good food

Paul G.

Yelp
Love it. Second time, grat as the first! Good eats. Each dish we have tried, we would order again. Good prices and good beers.

Yelp
Great pub! Excellent service with authentic menu options. We have had lunch in the dining area as well as dinner at the bar. Both are great. Fish and chips is a favorite and for good reason. The fish is perfectly battered and crispy. Fries are well seasoned. Tartar sauce is tangy and creamy. Malt vinegar is available as well as ketchup. The special seasoning on the burger is very special. The burger was perfectly cooked to medium as ordered and piping hot. Onion rings are surprisingly awesome. My husband didn't offer to share- and he is usually quick to share. I stole one and it was worth the glare I got! Lots of beverage options including a winter cocktail menu. They also do an excellent job on layered drafts. Our favorite is the snakebite - guiness and cider. Smithwicks on draft, also a great choice. Staff is friendly and quick to clear tables and plates. Even when it's very busy, waiting patrons are not waiting very long.

Yelp
Atmosphere, food and drink were all very good. We enjoyed our evening and will definitely be back

Yelp
Dining with friends at this southern inspired Irish pub restaurant, cozy atmosphere, good attentive service, nice menu featuring traditional Irish and southern cuisine. We ordered: shepards pie, drunken salmon that came with sautéed zucchini, yellow squash and cherry tomatoes, and colcannon, reuben sandwich with fries , large chefs salad and a Guiness beer. Food came out plated nice, hot foods hot, good portions, and reasonable prices. Everyone enjoyed their food and would return again.

Yelp
Great Rueben egg role, amazing shepherd pie! Even in busy St. Patties day service was great.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was moderate, people were nice and sweat but just didn't really interact with us a lot, but it's not a complaining, maybe just because they were busy. Food was good, we had the corn beef and Irish sausage. They were tasty.

Yelp
Met a few friends of many moons who reside close or in Charlotte. Their choice for tall tales of youth or as Life finds each. Waxhaw itself was ready decorated for its citizenry and/or visitors to celebrate a soon "Merry Christmas" Mary O'Neills was spot on, alas a dram of Irish whiskey (Jameison) with a chosen Guinness or Smithwicks because we can. 4-Fish and chips (fries) and 1-Reuben...I must say the fried cod was delish and who can refuse fresh fried potato slices....not a crumb on any plate...our server (dont remember her name) was excellent and not bashful to jump into the conversation of the table. An AWESOME day to see friends and a new spot to share with others...Trust me Yelpers....support this local business.

Yelp
Had a very pleasant lunch with friends. Service was excellent and food was great. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
The service was spectacular and the food was beyond delicious. Everyone was so friendly. And the atmosphere was amazing! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
This is a nice Irish pub style restaurant. During my visit the town had their Halloween event and parking was very bad. Inside there was plenty of room to seat us right away. Rugby was playing on the TV's with a bunch of fans watching. I ordered the bangers and mash which I forgot to take a photo of. Tasted very good though. The fish and chips weren't traditional chips but just fries. I'd return again.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh. My. Goodness. So glad we tried this place. Food was amazing! They have a nice patio out back with fans for the hot days. It was a very pleasant night and our server was amazing. Food was absolutely delicious. I heard another table ask their server what I got, food envy is always the best thing!!! We will definitely return!

Trevor B.

Yelp
I went to this bar at midnight to just chill and sober up before I headed home for the night and the older bartender with a pepper gottee refused to serve me a water because I hadn't ordered a beer yet. I told him that I didn't want to drink anymore and he proceeded to start serving other customers and ignoring me because I was not ordering a "real drink" I do not think that it is professional in any manner to refuse a customer because they only want a cup of water
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
I used to come there a lot to get work done on my laptop until Steve the bartender started yelling at me out of nowhere, in front of everyone, just for spending too long there (3 hours). Even though I was always polite, always bought food and drinks, and had always tipped well, until that night.

Yelp
We (my work team) came here after a shooting fundraising with 12 gauge shotguns. The food and beer was delicious! The servers were so hospitable and our server had a memory like an elephant. It's a dive but the ambience is perfect. It's a place you can come to just have a good time with friends/family and have a good time. Perfect beverages. Delicious food and good music with your meal along with tvs at the bar. If you're in Waxhaw, come check it out. Plenty of parking across the street.

Chris B.

Yelp
It has been ALONG time since coming to Waxhaw, so we were enjoying walking downtown (highly recommend too !). We decided we wanted to try Mary O'Neill's and are SO HAPPY we did. We split two entrees, Southern Stout Burger with onion rings and the The Wolfhound Burger with sweet potatoe fries. Both burgers were fabulous with taste, temperature and consistent with description. The Goat Cheese on the Wolfhound and the BBQ sauce on the Stout were such great compliments to each dish. The sides were good, but of course just a side note to the prize entree. The ambiance was terrific, and it really seemed like a neighborly GOTO bar and restaurant. Our service was spectacular... hats off and MUGS UP to AUDREY for such HOSPITALITY ! Thank you !!

Mark

Yelp
We will be back.Food was excellent as was the service.Comfortable surroundings.I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
We were craving fish and chips and decided to try this place. We weren't disappointed and loved the drive and the cute little town! Definitely will be back!

Yelp
My son loves the shepherds pie. The pub like environment is still family friendly and Waxhaw is super cute.

Yelp
I love a good pub, don't you? And since popping into Darky Kelly's in Dublin or the Golden Lion in London is impractical, this place will have to do. And it does! "In the shadows of the Water Tower sits Mary O'Neill's, home of a great pint, hearty cuisine, set in an atmosphere that feels like home," reads the opening line on their website. And what a wonderful ambiance they set. Happy, noisy, and homey with intoxicating aromas coming from the kitchen. Pull up a stool and have at it, I say. I suppose they have delicious salads, but I have enough Irish blood in me to blow by the greens and head for the Fish-n-Chips, Irish Stout Stew, or Classic Reuben. And there's Corned Beef and Cabbage, Shepherd's Pie, and a barrage of burgers and other stuff to satisfy the hungriest of your beasts. So good, too. A few reviews have dissed their French fry potatoes as rubbery, or undercooked. Uh, that's the Irish way so they soak up all that tangy malt vinegar. Pro tip: order your fries double-cooked to get that American crispiness (yes, I double-checked with the owner). Problem solved. Looking for a place to unwind without hopping a red eye to Dublin? Mary O'Neill's pours a perfect head of Stout on my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. Chill out here.

Yelp
Homemade comfort food the Irish way! We enjoyed our dinner at this cozy restaurant in downtown Waxhaw. I had the Reuben sandwich and it was delicious. My friend had the fish and chips and it was a huge portion. Delicious flaky bread on fish and huge french fries with salty taste. We parked and walked there because downtown is tricky for parking. There are parking lots by the water tower and you can walk. They had a cozy bar but we were ordering to go so didn't stay. Friendly service and love the Irish accents too! For takeout you can order with the host or at the bar.
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
They have great food. I particularly enjoyed their nachos and the staff were friendly

Yelp
Love this restaurant. Great food; great service! Highly recommend. Bangers and mash is my favorite.

Yelp
I went here a few weeks ago and really enjoyed the Ruben rolls. The sauce that comes with it is very yummy as well! I also had fish and fries. The fish was nicely battered and crispy but could have used a little more seasoning. The service was friendly and quick. The ambiance was very cozy as the seating was fairly close. I will be back to try other items.
google avatar

Yelp
Good Meal! Me and the kid stopped by to grab dinner before heading to the Pro game at FCC. The kid wanted a Ruben and I talked into Ruben spring rolls based on the elite Yelp reviews and the rave reviews for the rolls. He loved them and he gave me a taste and they were great. I got the Irish curry chicken which was grilled chicken in Irish curry with onions and green peppers. They gave a choice of rice or fries and I chose both which they accommodated. The meal was an ample portion and tasted great. The curry with the fries and chicken was out of this world!! Next time I will listen to my inner spud lover and just get fries. Had a Magner's cider while I waited for for the meal. Good stuff and I highly recommend to anyone with a pulse and an appetite. Cheers!

Dave D.

Yelp
We had the Reuben and Fish and Chips. Great food and service. I will be back again to try other entree's.

Yelp
Great food, awesome service, and Meghan can hand pour a Guinness with a shamrock!! I love the bar area to belly up with a Guinness and their awesome Nacho's!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great staff good food. Definitely a pub experience. Pretty standard fare: burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, nachos, etc. All good Good time!
google avatar

Michele K.

Yelp
Yum. Had their special burger and even tho it was well done it was still juicy and delicious Others with me had fish and chips and were very happy with taste and portion size Our server was very attentive and I'm sorry I don't know her name While it was very loud inside it was also packed so people plus the competing background music gave it a dn atmosphere to drink and eat! The little town of Waxhaw looks interesting with a lot of little boutique shops

Hylda P.

Yelp
I've been going for several years! One of my favorite places to eat. Atmosphere is great, food is fantastic and prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Lanie H.

Yelp
Mary O'neils is a great place with great service, it can be expensive especially if you have a large group but the staff always is curtious of placing you in a spot where you'll be comfortable. We got a nice waitress and she let me order off the kids menu since I was the only one who wanted a pepperoni pizza, even tho she wasn't supposed to let me do that! - i definitely recommend since the food is so delicious

Gaye F.

Yelp
Another great night. Steven is the best. What a bartender, friendly to everyone, always checking my drink and such a personality! We love him.

Natalie P.

Yelp
The nicest people, and all homemade, authentic Irish food! Love the atmosphere too- very cozy ;)

Yelp
Great Irish pub! We have been there several times and have been happy with the, food, drink, & great service. Cozy atmosphere and the bar always has games on. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Found a gem in Downtown Waxhaw. Great food, great drinks, great patio. They have traditional Irish meals like fish and chips and bangers and mash plus creations like Irish chicken curry and Mary's Nachos in Shepherds Pue. Guinness and Smithwicks are on tap plus several other beers, wines, and Irish whiskeys. The inside looks like your typical Irish pub. The patio is next to the water tower and each table has an umbrella. Multiple fans keep you cool plus the patio is between two buildings so at dinner you're blocked from the sun. Bring some friends, grab a pint, and get ready to eat and drink well! Looking forward to returning to makemy way through the entrees and the Irish whiskey list!
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
AMAZING Food and Service; first went there for St. Patrick's Day this year and it was so good we've been back a few times for dinner. Brought the parents once (out of towners) and then again with the kids (6 + 10) so highly recommend for any/all groups. The look and feel is great and any place that serves high quality food without a long wait is good for a parent.

Yelp
My sister in law lives inntown we Stoped in for a drink Saturday, great service, wonderful atmosphere, Guinness, Irish music playing.. what else can you ask for
google avatar

Charito S.

Yelp
Went there after kid's soccer practice... and it just got the spot! the kids shepherd's pie, beef stew and chicken curry were all delish! try the bread w three types of butters -- yum!!! and for dessert, don't miss the bread pudding w baileys ice cream!

peter s.

Yelp
We went here when there was too long a wait at Maxwell's Tavern down the street. Service was quick and friendly and food prepared fresh. The fish and chips were quite good, but the fish portion was a bit small. It was a good experience and a welcoming ambiance
google avatar

Dudine J.

Yelp
Food was not memorable. My sister and brother-in-law as well as my daughter all tried the dishes I purchased, and the consensus was that the items lacked flavor. I will not be trying it again. I tend to think some places which are heavy on alcohol tend to lack flavor because the alcohol blocks off the taste buds.
google avatar

Darrell L.

Yelp
I've been coming here for about a year and a half and each time the service and food is outstanding. Wednesday night is our favorite because they have prime rib that night. Get there before 7 or they might be out as they only prepare enough for the day. The French onion soup is always solid as is everything else. If your in Waxhaw, definitely give this place a try.
google avatar

Yelp
Super fun atmosphere and service. A great night following a very stressful week. Potato and Leek Soup
