The Best Restaurants and Bars in Detroit’s Eastern Market | Eater Detroit

"The menu at this walk-ins only Southern-style brunch spot was inspired by recipes made by the great-grandmother of the ownership who, according to the business’s website, was named Marybelle. Start off the meal with a bougie frosé mimosa, then share a couple of appetizer-sized entrees such as the peach cobbler or go with a full-sized portion for specialties like chicken and waffles. Other entrees include catfish and grits, a variety of skillets, or decadent sides like sweet potato pancakes. Reservations are not accepted here, nor are parties of more than six people." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Kennedy was the bar tender and she was very kind. She made me appreciate the spot along with the tasty food. But the owner who was working at the hostess should hire someone and not do it herself. First, encounter with her she didn’t make my group feel welcomed. But Kennedy turned that around.

Google
It’s a whole vibe. I’ve been over 5x so far in the last 2 months and they haven’t let me down yet. Good customer service, good food, and good music. My only complaint is that I wish they stayed opened longer throughout the day. Also, the peach cobbler french toast makes me want to melt 🤤. 1000/10

Google
Cool vibes wasn’t disappointed at all. The wait was lengthy very busy establishment so that had an impact on the service but in all the Food made up for it! And the drinks were strong and pleasing!

Google
My 1st time here. I read the reviews & expected a wait but we were seated promptly. The hostess was warm & inviting. The waitress approached advising the most popular dishes. We ordered a flight of frozen Mimosas (THE BEST)! We also had salmon croquettes, scrambled eggs & the shrimp grits and fried green tomatoes for appetizer. ALL of it was good! I initially thought the prices were a bit steep but the bill was less than $150 for 3 of us WITH drinks I can live with those numbers ESPECIALLY considering the atmosphere, service and quality. I WILL be back! Look at those Mimosas…yum…1 strawberry 1 mango 1 watermelon & 1 blueberry

Google
Made reservations online. After getting to Gratiot location, found they were closed. Called MaryBelles...lady who answered was apologetic and so nice. Eventhough the other location was closing soon, she accommodated us. When we arrived...the entire staff was so very nice. Best experience and great customer service. Food was just as good as the service!!!!!!

Google
This visit was from 9 months ago. I just realized I never gave my review and felt it was worth sharing. My party and I thought the food was just ok. More importantly, my low rating is about the prices and tipping. The prices were a little steep. The tipping suggests were what blew my mind. I realize it's just a suggestion, but really? Suggesting 25-40%? Then my second receipt suggested an ADDITIONAL tip of 2-7% !!! This is after my card was swiped and I ALREADY tipped $5 (about 20%).

Hands down one of the best breakfast spot I went to in a while. The food was absolutely delicious. The ambience was awesome and weight staff was superb.

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Excellent Service and Delicious Food! I had a wonderful dining experience at Marybelle’s. From the moment we were seated, our waitress Tamia was incredibly attentive, friendly, and professional. She checked in just the right amount—not too much, not too little—and made sure our drinks were always full and our orders came out just the way we wanted. The food was outstanding. Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor. I especially enjoyed the seafood omelette and catfish which was cooked to perfection. Overall, great atmosphere, amazing food, and top-notch service. Highly recommend and will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
I love it here!! This restaurant is located in the eastern market right across from the fire station. (For people who are familiar with this area it's in the old Sala Thai spot) Open just for breakfast and lunch. To start...the food that I've had has been delicious. And every dish that walks past gets your attention. I've been here a few times and look forward to going back to try more dishes. So far I've tried .... Avocado toast Salmon croquettes Shrimp and grits Chicken Biscuits with turkey sausage gravy Eggs Potatoes Breakfast egg rolls and mimosas!!! All have been great. Service has been great every time. Small parking lot but plenty of street parking. Go to their website, stalk the menu, go and enjoy!!

Yelp
I think this might be the first time, when I have updated a review for the better. This time around the food was so flavorful and simply delicious. I ate all my food and I don't usually do that - it was so good I couldn't stop eating lol , the service wasn't real fast but the server was a sweetheart and she had to manage being a server and hostess but she did her thing. It isn't big in here but it's nice and cozy. The parking lot is small but there is street parking. I will definitely be back for sure.

Yelp
Small on the inside, but that didn't matter. Babbbbbeeeeeee, The service and the food slaaaaappppped! Even in the midst of trying to get multiple impatient guest seated, the staff remained professional and friendly. My sis recommended we patronage this business because I came home for a week and they did NOT disappoint! I will definitely be visiting on my next trip home!

Yelp
Have you ever enjoyed a place so much you know you'll be back before you even leave?!? Today that was me here. Walked in and the hostess were friendly, accommodating and quick. Once seated our server was kind and sweet. Now the food...the menu h makes everything sound good so it was hard to narrow it down. Once ordered our food was made fresh, hot and delicious. They even brought out a slice of cake and sang happy birthday to my friend. This was a great spot for a Saturday girls day out birthday brunch.

Yelp
So decided to go here on a Saturday to experience the brunch. Let me start off that there is limited parking in the parking lot so you might have to park on the street. The restaurant DOES NOT accept reservations so be prepared to wait. I felt the staff was friendly and greeted my group upon arrival. The ambiance is cute and the place isn't very big. Now let's jump into the food. I ordered the Chicken Wings and French Toast. I thought the wings were okay not as seasoned as I would have liked but that Fried Fish was hitting. I wish I would have ordered that cause it was really good. Fried hard and seasoned. I ordered basic French toast with powders sugar. I also tried the grits which I didn't like it wasn't creamy or flavored. What I loved about it was it was perfectly flavored and I didn't need syrup but my sister disagreed. They had been prior and stated they didn't like the smothered potatoes so I didn't order it. As far as the drinks they were good but a little pricey. I ordered the "Down in the D" which had Remy VSOP and it was nicely decorated with a honeycomb. While here inquired about the drink options and they don't have a wine selection for the wine drinkers which was disappointing. I didn't give them a 4 stars because the server was present to seat us bring water then drinks and pretty much disappeared. It wasn't that busy as to we had to reach out to another server just to get our bill and then she finally returned. This place is definitely worth giving it a try be ready to spend if you're a drinker and they don't allow substitutions for certain sides on meals.

Yelp
Commenting on their *Gratiot location* for dinner. Food was good but service was extremely slow. Our waitress was the host, waiter, and bartender for the entire restaurant. It took us a hour for our drinks. Food took a hour as well but food came before our drinks. They need to be more organized and support each other one person should not be wearing so many hats while others just walk around.

Yelp
The host, 10/10. She was SO sweet to me from the time I walked in until the second she sat me. I sat at the bar which was cool with me. I thought I was beating the crowd by coming in on a weekday for lunch but that place was banging like a Sunday after church. I also didn't mind that either tho, I got sat immediately. I got a glass of champagne instead of a mimosa but their champagne was super sweet. I'm more of a dry wine/champagne drinker. I didn't care for it much. I got catfish and scrambled eggs with cheese. The fish was fried perfectly. It came out super hot and fresh. The eggs were a little eh on the presentation but they weren't bad tasting. I do want to come back and try their fried chicken wings and the salmon croquettes and then I'll be able to give a real opinion but overall. I like the place. I would recommend.

Ms N.

Yelp
The food was delicious , although smaller portions for the price but still good. The ambiance was nice as well. The wait time on a Sunday about 30 minutes for 2 people. And about 25 -30 minutes to get our food. Small waiting area doesn't allow you to linger when waiting for a table. We waited in the car but also note when texted from the waitlist you only have 5 minutes to arrive, so walk fast! Overall Great atmosphere good food. Would go again

Yelp
Good music, good food. I enjoyed the experience. Seems like a fun place. We just happened upon it so we were not prepared for the festive ambiance. Service was ok but did not take away from the experience. A little slow but definitely worth the wait! Sweet potato pancakes- delicious Salmon Croquettes and grits-amazing Avacado Toast- delicious

Yelp
This tiny little spot is located in the heart of the Eastern Market. There is some street parking available and there's a small lot out back. The waiting area is also small and always congested whenever I visit. There is a bar and some booth and table seating but the restaurant doesn't hold many people. This is important to know because there is always a wait. They don't take standard reservations but you can book priority seating via their website for $125 for a small booth that seats up to 5 or a large booth $150 seats up to 7 people. This includes a 2 hour dining experience along with a bottle of Champagne and juice of your choice and a couple of appetizers on top of the cost for your meal. The food and drinks make it worth the wait. They are serving up some of the best tasting soul food around. My favorite is the cat daddy (catfish with a side of shrimp and grits). The Cajun shrimp sauce is to die for. I also love the fried green tomatoes and the salmon croquettes. The drinks are tasty too. I like the frozen ones and the martinis that come with an extra little side car. The service is friendly and attentive especially considering how busy this place always is. They're only open for brunch hours daily except closed on Wednesdays. If you like soul food then go try them out and remember to pack your patience because the food is definitely worth the wait!

Yelp
I know someone's grandma was back there cooking because the food was just too delicious . We loved what we ordered and I love the menu concept. This place has a chill vibe and cute decor to match . The service was prompt and it was a great way to spend our Sunday. Every time I visit Detroit from Las Vegas, Marybelle's will be on my agenda .
google avatar

Yelp
Anytime I stop in the D I'm sure to make my way to Marybelle's. The food is always fresh, hot, and delicious. The staff are always very professional and courteous. If you're looking for some delicious food in the heart of the city....you have to stop at this place. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Fried green tomatoes were awesome! Serving sizes were pretty good (Cat Daddy). Grits were creamy and full of flavor. Fish fried to perfection.

Yelp
I'm gonna start by saying the food was awesome. The total experience was nothing like I expected. From the time we entered the building all was exceptional. Our server was on point! The inside decor and setup was classy. We were even greeted by the owner at one moment. All the employees were on top of their game. Food was ordered and out to table pretty fast. All our dishes were incredible. Pricing was fair to me. I don't mind paying for great food and service. Please check them out and support this establishment. Located in eastern market district.

Yelp
MaryBelles is one of the nicest brunch spots I've been to in Detroit, and I would put it right up there with Joe Louis's Southern Kitchen and Detroit House of Pancakes. I had the Shrimp and Grits with the Cajun Cream Sauce, and it was excellent. The grits were creamy and went great with the cajun cream sauce (which was the star of the dish). There was a ton of shrimp, and it may be my favorite Shrimp and Grits in Detroit (heavily due to the cream sauce) Someone else had the Catfish and Grits and the Catfish was cooked to a perfectly flaky, golden brown. The service was great and our waiter, Julian, did an excellent job. We will be back and this is a great edition to Eastern Market!
google avatar

Demetrius S.

Yelp
Service was less than satisfactory. It took me about 20 minutes to receive water and menus at the bar. I don't mind slower service but the FOH didn't lead with any deficits in staffing for the day. Food was just okay

Yelp
Saw this place on TikTok and definitely had to try it out. My friend and I came on a Sunday afternoon around 1 PM. And we ended up waiting about 45 minutes because this place is packed. They don't take any reservations which is a little problematic, but we waited anyways. We finally got seated at the bar and when we got in we saw how small it actually is. We ended up ordering right away because we had plenty of time to look at the menu. For my drink I got the 'not your average frose' which is frose with grenadine and Tito's. It was good. Next I got the catdaddy which is shrimp and grits with a side of catfish. And it was very delicious. It was worth the wait. I would suggest to get there and reserve your party and since it's in the eastern market to do a little shopping that wait you are waiting in the crowded waiting room. There is plenty of street parking and they have a little parking lot in the back. Overall the staff was very nice and happy to serve you theirs food. If you have the time I would definitely try this place.

Yelp
I.Will.Be.Back! Everything was great - food, vibe, drinks, parking. Even the prices were pretty good. Our server was a doppelgänger for Malia Obama and super courteous plus we got a chance to chat with one of the owners and hear their touching origin story which might've made the food taste even better. Veggie Skillet 5/5 Salmon Skillet 5/5 Simple Breakfast 5:5 Over easy eggs 5/5 (perfect execution) Dirty Rice 6/5 (yes that good) Biscuit appetizer 5/5 ( biscuits were pretty good but blueberry butter was outstanding) Coffee was absolutely perfect, mimosas were strong and tasty. We spent $150 for 6 including a few cocktails and extra sides. We went on a Monday around noon - minimal wait for a group of 6

Yelp
The best salmon croquettes I've had. The grits had the perfect texture. Peach cobbler French Toast was good, it was missing something just don't know what. Service needed some fixing. Our waitress helped two tables that came after us before helping us. Did not bring spoons for the grits. Place is nice, but the table did smell like a dirty towel. I will go back again. I believe the issues were one offs.

Yelp
Went to here today for breakfast for the 1st time. We were greeted warmly when we walked in, immediately sat with a choice of the bar or a booth. Our server Tamia promptly came over to greet us and thanked us for coming in. Gospel was playing, it is Sunday and I enjoyed the vibe. We ordered food and it didn't take long at all for us to get our food. I ordered salmon croquettes and grits which came which brioche toast. Everything was well seasoned to my liking. The coffee was mid and lukewarm. I will go again and want to try there happy hour.

Terry G.

Yelp
Here at MaryBells food was mediocre at best service was great I had the Catfish & Grits with a side of Fried Green tomatoes that I had to send back . It was stated the fried green tomatoes were fresh made on site that's not true grits were so so the catfish came out with the batter side falling off the fish which was bland but you got a large piece of fish. Would I recommend this resturant no t this time but I would come back only if I was super hungry OMG the happy birthday singing got on my nerves with all the staff singing off key

Yelp
The restaurant is right in the middle of the BEAUTIFUL historic Eastern market. The food was absolutely delicious, fresh with subtle ,vibrant additions. just to name a few: Those sweet potato pancakes were amazing, the bacon thick and prepared well, and the skillet delicious!!
google avatar

Raven D.

Yelp
I came to eat brunch by myself on a Saturday and it was really busy. I was greeted right when I came in and the host was nice. I didn't have to wait long to get a table since I was by myself. The restaurant is small and cozy. My server was attentive and my food was delivered quickly. I got the Cat Daddy and it was delicious. The catfish was fried to perfection and I scooped up every bit of the shrimp and grits with the Texas toast that came with. The servers all seemed to be hospitable when I heard them interacting with other tables and I really enjoyed the music in here. Definitely will be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp

Yelp
I immediately judge a soul food restaurant on their salmon croquettes and grits. It was delicious! Took home an order of catfish & grits and a side of pancakes that I will enjoy tomorrow. The service was great. It's in a great location as well. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Had no complaints though I was expecting some after reading reviews. Party of 5 women celebrating a late birthday. Two of the women had dined here before. Chicken wings & fried green tomatoes as appetizer. Dined on cheese Grits with catfish. Nice portion, good taste and temp. Nice Crispy coating. Wait staff attentive. Sizable tip left. I will be returning.

Yelp
From the beautiful waitstaff, cute ambiance and great Remy Drop drink was so good! I keep coming back! Thanks so much!

Yelp
I finally got to check this place out. We had to wait 30-40 minutes for a table, but the food was worth the wait. It's not very big in there. I wish they would accept reservations...but the food and waitress were nice and on point. The music was banging and it was a nice vibe. The parking lot is not big but there is plenty of parking on the street.

Cynthia P.

Yelp
Small portions, good food but overpriced for the portion sizes. Some of the staff weren't very friendly.

Rhonda A.

Yelp
Very good service and awesome food. Best soul food in town. Black owned. Love the music and experience.

Detroit S.

Yelp
Don't let it fool you, Marybelles may be located @ the Eastern Market but it's closer to Mack on Russell and the traffic starts to die down. There was even parking available on their lot. Just be patient. The owner/hostess is moving patrons meticulously in finding a spot for every hungry soul. The waitress is friendly and the food - Salmon cakes are light, crispy and delicious. (The grits aren't southern) The cash app plus drink is a one and done . Thank you LaWanda for getting the crew seated and fed. See you soon pop p

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Let me tell you, honey, those fried green tomatoes? A great start to the meal, so crispy and tangy, they practically dance on your taste buds. And don't even get me started on that slim thick skillet - it's like a culinary masterpiece, hitting all the right notes with each bite. But the real showstopper? The Pom drop. Oh, honey, that drink is pure magic, a burst of flavor that's both refreshing and oh-so-satisfying. So yeah, the wait might be a little long, but let me tell you, it's worth every single minute. Trust me, you won't regret it

LaShawnia M.

Yelp
Excellent food excellent service great atmosphere highly recommend the host came to our table and greeted us and checked on us while our waitress was busy will definitely be back
