The Best Old-School Caffs in South London | Eater London

"Beyond Burgess Park, where Camberwell dissolves into Walworth, there’s a few historical places where people hang out: a 1930s pub, a century-old pie and mash shop, and Mary’s Cafe, which opened four years before man landed on the moon. The place has an eclectic, old-fashioned menu, with unusual options like duck eggs, spotted dick, and an Irish breakfast, which includes white pudding and excludes baked beans. Like a Scottish breakfast, the Irish at Mary’s is a reminder that fried breakfasts are really just a whole lot of pork, fried and arranged on a plate. It’s worth eating all that pork at Mary’s because of the quality of its meat. The white pudding is a hockey puck of oaty, bloodless fat with a hint of offal; the sausages are real too — plump, herb-speckled things like the ones at E Pellicci and Regency Cafe. At lunchtime, the steak and kidney pie comes softened beneath a puddle of gravy, its pastry casing filled to the brim with tender chunks of beef." - Isaac Rangaswami

Best cafe I’ve been to in London. Beautiful spot, really lovely and bright inside. I got a fry up and it was outstanding, really well cooked and good quality sausage, tea or coffee included in the price and you get a mountain of soft buttery toast. Service is outstanding too, Hussein is really accommodating and super friendly. I WILL BE BACK!!!

Lovely breakfast here, sausages are quality, eggs cooked to perfection 👌, real mushrooms, none of tiny things from a tin you get in some cafes, hash browns really good, definitely would recommend,

Outstanding fry up. Every element thoughtful and cooked with care. Buttery bubble and high quality black pudding and sausage make all the difference. As always served with a smile.

Everything you could want from a London caff. Service is friendly and everyone gets a warm welcome, whether you’re a regular or it’s your first time. Expect generous portion fry ups, proper cups of tea and high quality sausages. True South London staple. Support your local caff!

I went into Mary’s Cafe this morning for breakfast with family including 2 little ones and they were very welcoming and attentive. When the food arrived it looked great, I’m always funny with fried eggs in a cafe as they are cooked with other things and make them crispy and burnt. However these eggs were cooked perfectly and tasted great as did the rest of my food! The sausages were from Hayward’s butchers and tasted lovely. I had the mini Mary’s breakfast and was more than enough for me to eat. Thank you guys and well done!!!

Lovely friendly caff. Perfect stop after a walk in the park. Dog friendly. Just a cuppa and baklava today but I’ll be back for the full English.

Yelp
I flew across the Atlantic for an English breakfast and I made the right decision. Friendliest owners of any establishment in the city I've met thus far. The food was amazing and the price was right. I'd move to the area just to make this place my local.

Yelp
Ever reliable Mary's! Been coming here for the best part of a decade and they have never once let me down. Everything you want from a proper old fashioned london greasy spoon. Great ingredients well prepared and friendly service. Probably my favourite Full English anywhere...

Yelp
I love Mary's, can't live without this warm welcoming cafe around the corner. Great breakfast - thick butchers sausage is crispy around and jucy inside, perfectly done fried egg to go with a crispy toast. Other menu also wholesome. We starved ourself when they closed for the summer holiday.
