"Mary's Taqueria (1901 St. Canalport Ave.) is an under-the-radar taco spot/corner store that has some of the best tacos in the city. Also don't sleep on their creamy green salsa." - Tim Flores and Genie Kwon

Been coming here for a long time. Family owned, great food. The creamy green salsa is so good. Always hot, fresh and fast. One of my favorite places to go to.

This place is right by my work so I came here many times. The younger woman who works there is so nice and kind. The last time I went in, the older lady took my order and charged me $3.99 for cilantro&onions on my tacos. I was so upset I waited two months to go back- just left moments ago, the older lady tried to charge me 15.99 for a taco dinner (which is more than I paid for a taco dinner, a topo, an extra side of salsa, AND a $4 tip with the younger woman). It's a disgusting business practice and I really don't recommend going here

Google
The food was nice and flavor-ful (yes that's what I said lol) and the food were in proper portion. Food came out fast which really made me happy because I was hungry 😋 and it was nice hot as far as temperature goes. My daughter and I will be back. I had the chicken taco dinner and my daughter had two pork tostadas. 10 out of 10 highly recommended!!!!!

Google
So pleased to find this place next to our Airbnb! We got into town and didn’t want to have to hunt for food so we ended up getting takeout from Mary’s, I’d say the food and price are on point. And fast. Great chorizo, sopas, nachos, tortas. Mom and pop corner store type place.

Google
Great little corner Mexican food place. It’s right near 88 Market Place. I had 3 different tacos, beans and chips with guacamole. Everything was excellent and very fresh. Highly recommend!

Been going here for really long time, amazing tacos and horchatas. I recently started bringing my kids here and they love it too.

It’s good.Minimal grocery store decor with only a few tables Specializing in Tacos.Barely noticeable in industrial nondescript location.Where the real people hang out. AWARDED 2 YUMS ON A SCALE OF 3

Mary's Taqueria serves my favorite tacos in Chicago! Ordered the pastor taco dinner to go, and was totally blown away. The flavor of the marinade combined with the aroma from the fat is just simply superb. SOOO GOOD. Even the bean that came with the dinner was so tasty. I never thought that I would comment on a side dish tbh but it's just so much better than everyone else. Fast and friendly service + great food. So glad that Mary's is right in the neighborhood. Would recommend to anyone who's looking for no frills good tacos.

Yelp
Best street tacos in the city!! Steak tacos are ridiculously good and delicious. Rice is cooked to perfection every time I go, which is on a weekly basis for the last 5 years.

Yelp
[ FOOD ] Grabbed an asada burrito and al pastor taco. I can't say it's the best but it was surprisingly pretty good. The burrito is not the biggest but it was pretty tasty. It would be better if they added some pineapple pieces to the al pastor taco. The meats are well seasoned and they crisp up the tortillas. [ SERVICE ] Good service, just order, sit down, and they will serve you your food. [ PLACE ] The restaurant has very home-y mom and pop vibes with random liquor store items for sale in addition to a few tables to dine in. It's kind of in a random spot because the entire block is just a bunch of houses so I can't imagine the restaurant would get very busy. [ VERDICT ] I would definitely come back. The food is good and it's a convenient spot for some mexican food after shopping at 88 Marketplace. They should really put prices up tho on their menu.

Jessica L.

Yelp
The food was charged al la cart. We ordered a catering tray of chicken fajitas. We had to pay for shells, the rice, beans, and the sauces. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that separates all of the above. Disgraceful. I won't be going back.

Corey Y.

Yelp
This place is awesome. They were closing for the nite, an still took care of my wife & aunts meal. I wish i took pics, but the food is the bomb! Very flavorful, cooked well. Chairs & seating make it a personal spot to eat & enjoy.

Lindsey H.

Yelp
Super fast and tasty! Got a chicken and steak taco + chips and salsa and I was full and happy!

Angela K.

Yelp
Burritos are fire!!! Guacamole was so fresh, sauces are on point. Everything we got was good. Mary was so kind and cute (i think that was her)

Tyler J.

Yelp
All I have to say is that the tacos are delicious!!! The chips and salsa were also very good. I highly recommend you try this place out!

Edwin C.

Yelp
The food itself was good. No complaints with that. Everything was fresh. The meat in the tacos were tender. I wish I tried this place pre-Covid. Despite a clear sign to wear a mask, there was a gentleman that walks in with his shirt pulled up as his mask completely ignoring the sign at the front entrance. The gentleman was in the restaurant for at least 5 minutes and the workers didn't say anything until I pointed him out. What's the point of having your signs if you're not going to enforce your rules? Safety isn't a priority for the customers here, just their workers. Even as I'm literally writing this review, another gentleman walks in doing the same thing. The workers don't say anything to this time despite standing inches away from the counter. They only spoke up before because I said something. This place is a complete joke. I don't care how good your food is. It all means nothing if safety isn't a priority and taken seriously. What a complete mess!

Vernitra R.

Yelp
We were new to Pilsen area and found this little gem!!! Love EVERYTHING!! The food, service and ambiance!!

Yelp
Small place, not the best place for dine in, but not terrible. I've eaten here a couple of times and never been really impressed nor disgusted. Just kinda so so. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but I only love a couple blocks away so when I'm hungry and lazy I might stop in. Their meat is pretty greasy and today all of my food was WAY top salty. I don't remember that being an issue before, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt this time. The food was served incredibly fast and the staff is friendly enough. All in All just a meh experience.

Marco L.

Yelp
I recently moved to the neighborhood and was looking for a regular spot to order from. I came across this place and checked it out; food is great! Store is so cute, nice set up... buttttttt the girl in the front seemed like she rather be anywhere else but there. I gave her the benefit of Doubt that maybe she was having a bad day the first time I went in, but it's been 4 times and still the same attitude. I love that's a family own business, but just having to deal with her doesn't make it a great full great experience!

Francis R.

Yelp
Kinda disappointing to be honest... Y'all bamboozled me with the 4.5 star rating. By no means was the food terrible, but I've for sure had better. Anyways, we were in the area doing some shopping when we decide to hang around the area to grab Mexican food for lunch. A quick Yelp review and boom something cheap and nearby... Mary's Taqueria! Definitely a hole in the wall sort of spot. Kinda looks like someone's house converted into part mini convenience store and part taqueria. No problem finding free street parking nearby. Huge sign from the front and being located on the corner of the intersection makes this an easy spot to find. Once in, you make your way to the back to order to go if you like or you can take a seat and a waitress will bring you menus. I ended up ordering a carne asada burrito, an al pastor taco, and a large horchata. Initially, when the food came out it definitely looked legit. But taste-wise, I've definitely had better. First ate the al pastor taco, which I found to be overly greasy. Next moved onto the asada burrito. While it does look big in size, it's mostly filled with lettuce which gives it it's deceiving size. The carne asada itself was kind meh, and definitely over board on the cheese & sour cream. Horchata was solid and I also did enjoy their green and red salsa which were in these easy squeeze bottles. No issues dousing eat bite with more and more salsa. Bring cash if you want to avoid the $1 fee on credit and debit charges. This is on of those spots where I can't complain the food is horrible but definitely not a spot I'd bother to come back for. 'Til next time! 85/365

Yelp
We stopped by on a Friday night to check out Mary's. I wanted to see how things were since the last time I visited. The place has revamped the menu (also the prices) and the entire establishment. It looks more like a restaurant and less like a convenience store. They enlarged the kitchen area, the seating area, and reduced the size of the convenience store area. Its a lot brighter and I love the new construction of the floors and space. Sadly, with any restaurant remodel comes an increase with prices. The 3 taco dinner with rice and beans is now $8.99. The guacamole is now $5.49 and the cost per taco is about $2.09. We dined in and service was great and so was the ambiance. It was really comfortable for us eating there. The quality of the food was also very good. I'd say I'd definitely come back!

Dalida J.

Yelp
I love Mary's their tacos are tasty and the guac is awesome. Perfect little restaurant to grab a quick tasty lunch or dinner. I have been eating here for over 6 years and its still great.

Tyler D.

Yelp
Food is amazing! My favorite is the chicken burrito right now, still gotta explore the menu more. Service is excellent too, nice and friendly! If you're passing by on your way home from work, being located right near I-90, I would definitely recommend grabbing something.

Tom O.

Yelp
Consistently good food and friendly staff. It's a small hole in the wall type place with a few tables and some grocery supplies. Try it out.

Mark V.

Yelp
Get the dinner taco if you're hungry. Super filling. I recommend the asado, chorizo, and tripa tacos. They all tasted great. Will be coming back. UPDATE 11/12/17 (re: catering) I ordered catering about a week ago for my daughter's party yesterday. We chose the per person option which came with everything. Food was phenomenal. Our guests really enjoyed the tacos. Will be doing catering with them in the future.

Diana J.

Yelp
Whoa! Talk about a hidden gem! Just get Al pastor ANYTHING and FISH TACOS. Enough said. They warm the corn tortillas for the tacos and the bread for the torta is fluffy and soft, yet crispy on the outside. SUPER NOM. Horchata is decent, not too sweet. Sad face that they charge for salsa and chips, but make sure to ask for the sauces when your food arrives! I asked for "hot sauce" and they brought me the red and green squirt bottles :). We also opted for cheese fries instead too :) Drooling thinking about them tacos again... will be back!!

Sany N.

Yelp
I have no complaints. I was craving some authentic Mexican food and found a hole-in-the-wall kind of place that satisfies that. Not the best I've had but on par with authentic flavors. A plus is that it's very easy to find free street parking too.

Your N.

Yelp
I wouldn't be able to survive without this establishment. No better tacos in Chicago.

Michael H.

Yelp
Finally stopped in here after hearing great things for years about the joint! Standard menu with Tacos/ Burritos/ Tortas, Etc... you know the drill. They also have authentic platillos as well as some specials every day! Just tried Asada Tacos traditional style with Salsa Verde. One thing I noticed is that they are very small with very little onion or cilantro, but just enough. The steak is GREAT as far as quality & flavor goes I don't think I have found a better place. The Salsa Verde was weak and watery so maybe go with the red? I'll be back for that famed Al Pastor at some point! Good spot to stop for lunch off the beaten path/ lots of seating inside & parking outside. Talk later?

K S.

Yelp
Great food! This is my go to for a quick lunch! Fast and friendly. Great family running the restaurant. My go to is the steak burrito with a side of rice. The green salsa is straight Fire!

Rickey L.

Yelp
Just left this and I would just like to thank for the hearty serving of old and spoiled steak in my tacos need I say more star is for location

Jean L.

Yelp
Not bad - just not memorable. I had the "taco dinner" for $8.99. 3 tacos of your choosing (I went with pollo, pastor, and carne) and some rice and beans. The rice and beans were a little skimpy in my opinion. The pastor and carne tacos were decent but the pollo was just all around disappointing. Cute joint, good prices, nice people. The $1 credit card surcharge was a little excessive considering the pricepoint of the food here. Bring cash!

Yelp
Was just there recently for my first visit. Tried calling in advance to order and have ready for me to pick-up; but, despite them being open, the phone ringing and ringing, no one picked up and ultimately told me that my call could not be completed. I went there regardless and glad I did. I ordered tacos only: chicken, carne asada and chile relleno. I am not a big fan of cilantro and onion, so ordered with lettuce, tomato and cheese (on chicken and carne asada tacos only), along with an order of rice. Overall, everything was very good, with a couple caveats: the carne asada had a very good taste; however, found lots of fatty/chewy pieces which I had to spit out and that would not make me order them again. The chile relleno did not have any sauce on the taco and thought it was going to be bland. Because I am not a big fan of super salty, I was able to taste the pepper and the cheese - had a nice, subtle spice to it. The chicken tacos I most definitely would get again! I got both the salsa verde and the salsa roja. Both were watery; yet surprisingly tasty with the roja being the much spicier of the two. As for the rice, they add corn and possibly other veggies, which isn't a problem for me. Rice was cooked exactly as I like it - I'd get the rice again. I'm definitely a fan. I will be going back to try other dishes. I cannot believe they've been open for 8-9 years and I am just having Mary's for the first time. They have a small store-like area, so if you are in need of some basic items, you may find them there while you are waiting for your food.

Oscar S.

Yelp
Nice little taqueria that also serves as a mini convenience store. The food is always good and hits the spot.I work in the area.So glad Mary's is walking distance from my work.I can also walkin and purchase a soup container full of salsa or jus taco meat so we can make our own tacos for lunch.Need an avocado??? Just stop in to Mary's and they got your back.I brought perch chowder to work the other day for my coworkers and I didnt have time to stop and buy crackers to eat with the chowder.I walked over to Mary's in HOPES that there would be crackers. And LO AND BEHOLD,there was!!!! YAAAAAAY!!! Saved the day!!! Thank you!!!! Needless to say,I am a fan.Not a fancy place. But good food at a decent price and our littke neighborhood gem!! I am a regular diner/shopper and will continue to be.

Michael S.

Yelp
We had the Tampiquena! It was fabulous with well seasoned steak, napolitos with just the right bite, rice and beans. And 4 salsas with perfectly fried chips! Well done! Coming back today for Mexican breakfast!

Amy O.

Yelp
I met a friend there who was familiar with the establishment. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised! The fish tacos were outstanding, the beans and rice were wonderful. BUT...the chips with the creamy jalapeno sauce or whatever that deliciousness was keeps me thinking, when am I going back? I'm not kidding, it was amazing! I would love the recipe, but fear that even it I had it, I wouldn't be able to replicate it. Hurry, go now!

Curtis B.

Yelp
It's a small local spot, but the breakfast here was excellent! The green salsa was very good and worked perfectly with a scramble

Eder S.

Yelp
The tacos were very good especially the lengua and al pastor. i took one star off because they do not offer complimentary chips and salsa especially when other competitors offer them for free and the other competitors menu items are less expensive. also i would suggest to the staff that when a customer is ordering tripa tacos that ask if they want the tripa regular or dorada, this would prevent customers from accidentally ordering wrong item

Vero Z.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! They're doing a really good job with COVID 6 feet apart measurements and making sure everyone has a mask on! This is my go to spot for Mexican breakfast and tacos. They're a small business with lots of Mexican food options and usually have specials of the day. I love their burritos and cheese fries!

Christopher V.

Yelp
4.5 Stars? Mary's must have a cult following of locals who grew up eating there & are now blinded by nostalgia. Everything is ok, but literally every other taco spot in the area is as good or better. Doesn't help that they nickel & dime for lettuce & any other add on.

Cindy L.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Mexican tacos. Best green avocado salsa. Food is always On time and staff very friendly.

Patti L.

Yelp
Go somewhere else for the burrito. The burrito looks a bit smaller in size. Not as thick filling as before. Only beans, steak and cilantro in this one. For the cost of $5.29, may have to find another place.

Nicholas R.

Yelp
I have been in a few times and always get great service. It always comes out quick and tasty. There is a Salsa Verde that is amazing, it is creamy and should be bought for every meal. It is an amazing addition for just dipping chips or putting it on your burrito. Speaking of Burritos the pastor is my jam, and can't get myself to order anything different, but there menu has everything. It's a little difficult to figure out what they have online with the lack of a website, but don't let it turn you off it is worth the trip I promise. Side note there is a little grocery section and they have these little cookies called Sponch that have marshmallows and some jam. Never would have thought about trying it, but luckily I did.

Gigi S.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best taco places in Chicago! I have many friends that are obsessed with this place and will go here solely for their bomb tacos. The prices are great, and there is also a small, convenient bodega inside(:

Chris C.

Yelp
Went in to pick up some take out not planning on anything special. I wasn't getting anything fancy, but, wow, really delicious chicken tacos, great guacamole, and the freshest homemade chips ever. The seasoning of the chicken was really tasty.

Michael K.

Yelp
Good neighborhood spot for Mexican food. I wish they stayed open later but otherwise have had good experiences with them.

R Y.

Yelp
This place is a great little find. Authentic, divey, and reasonably priced. I really enjoy the mom and pop atmosphere here. Had the guacamole and chips, huevos ranchero with corn tortillas and my wife had the beef plate with rice and beans. Everything was prepared quickly and the place was friendly. There's plenty of free parking on the street. I'm a fan.

Foodie M.

Yelp
Not far from Chinatown, not far from home.... But some of the best tacos I have ever had.... it hits the spot from soups to sandwiches and tacos to breakfast... plus that avocado sauce is the best..... yummmm

Fernanda L.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! Mexican food is my favorite and this place has the best tacos I have ever tried in my whole entire life!!!! No joke!! I am so sad about moving bc I will miss these tacos very much! I've tried other plates as well and everything was always so tasty and delicious! I bring all my friends here and my boyfriend and I eat here atleast once a week!!!

Natalie B.

Yelp
I've been here at least a dozen times and can honestly say I've never been disappointed. The food here is amazing and you just can't beat the prices. Don't let the simple exterior fool you, this place is the definition of a hole in the wall with the surprisingly awesome food to back it up. The chilaquiles are the best I've had in the city and in Mexico. (And I've eaten a lot of chilaquiles between Chicago and Guadalajara.) The steak tacos and steak burritos are also phenomenal - they cook the meat perfectly with the perfect ratio of toppings.

J M.

Yelp
tLengua. Get the lengua. Hell, get three of them. Don't bother with anything else. The tortillas are mind-blowing. Tender and delicious, these cannot be beat. Some buddies and I did a same-day taste test between Mary's and El Taco Veloz. Sorry, ETV.....Mary's FTW.

Cara K.

Yelp
Tasty tacos and pleasant service. Plenty of seating inside or if you call ahead you can pick up in 10-15 min. Nothing fancy about the food or restaurant itself, but it doesn't need to be. It's consistent and tasty.

R E.

Yelp
VERY disappointing. Ordered the taco dinner with steak tacos. Price was fair. Food was awful. Tacos were so chewy and flavorless. Was only given one oz of salsa and it was very bland. Spanish rice tasted like instant rice that was just taken out of the microwave. I felt sad after eating my meal. Will not Return.

Tim O.

Yelp
Mary's Taqueria is The Best!!!!!! Tops Amazing Delicious Mexican Cuisine tucked away in the back of a Mom and niece's run tiny corner grocery store. Scrumptious inexpensive food! Mary Arriaga lives in Mexico, and her daughter Maria Flores brings mom's recipes to life here in Pilsen....Chef Alberto runs the kitchen and creates mini masterpieces of everyday Mexican dishes. I love the Chicken Tacos in flour tortillas..I ask for cilantro onions of course, and add cheese sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes ...my artist girlfriend and Pilsen native Pamela loves the Chili Rellenos tacos. The Guacamole and chips reign supreme...and you must order a side of the creamy avocado sauce...which I use on everything...yummy tangy sauce found nowhere else in the city. Niece Emily or her sister are wonderful servers and are kind and quick to help any newcomer decide what to order, and the food comes out fast and hot. The tiny dining area has maybe four booths and two tables...so quaint and out of the way.....you won't see any lines out the door, unless maybe at lunch time. The prices are as amazing as the food. Love me some Marys Taqueria!

David T.

Yelp
Honestly subpar food. I was super excited because of all the stellar reviews but I came here and realized all the recent reviews about it being lower in quality are true. The portions are small, pricier than it should have been, construction smell and service was just okay. I won't be coming back and am thoroughly disappointed.

Christian C.

Yelp
Super legit. Walked into the side door and took a look at the menu. The place smells like my grandmother's house so I immediately had a feeling this food would be good. Simple menu, which is the way to do Mexican food. Don't over complicate it and keep it authentic. Got a couple steak tacos and they were small. Normally I'd eat 2 or 3 depending on size but I'd need at least 4 of these to satisfy me. Either way the food was authentic and delicious. Seating is limited so take your food to go.

Jo L.

Yelp
Delicious chicken tacos and menudo! The chips were a different, lighter texture than I've had before and are my new favorite chip style. Two kinds of salsa: a smoky spicy tomato based salsa and a green chile puree (I think). The taqueria has indoor seating (4-5 booths or tables) and will provide high chairs if needed. Polite and helpful staff. Highly recommend!
