OC’s Halal Chinese Eatery Coming to Clairemont Mesa | Eater San Diego

"An existing Ma’s House location in Laguna Hills is part of the same Orange County operation and serves as the model for the San Diego menu; the Laguna Hills spot is noted as well-known in Orange County and features halal-prepared dishes such as lamb, beef, seafood, and vegetables (no pork), with signatures like sesame-crusted scallion bread and chewy, knife-cut noodles." - Candice Woo

MA’s House 🏠 is a Halal Chinese restaurant in Laguna Hills. The service is good, the food 🥘 is good 👍. Large portions and moderate prices. I liked the Mongolian 🇲🇳 beef 🥩. The fried rice 🍚 has a bit of burnt odor; the eggs were over cooked . The fried rice 🌾 isn’t too oily nor sticky. The Black Mushroom was so delicious . The overall smell of the place is good; no cooking odor . I highly recommend it. Thanks to Migale for a good service 🙏

Looking for some great Chinese food in South Orange County, then this is the spot for you. Next to RoadRunner in the same shopping center as Trader Joe’s. The price is right and the portions are perfect! The service is fantastic!

Google
Had lunch here, great selection of halal Chinese food. They were about to close for afternoon prayer and evening food prep but the lady went over and above in serving is and making provisions so we could complete our meal comfortably.

Google
If you want yo tyr Chinese and halal food you can come here. Prices afordable, places is clean. You can find parking lot easily. I tryed hot and sour soup and dumpling. I recommend it.

Michael W.

Google
A comfortable "family style" authentic Chinese food joint. The only reason it doesnt have 5 stars is because the decor is more like a country-style kitchen and lacks much of anything "Chinese". But if you want good food, definitely come here!

Google
I recently visited Maz House Restaurant and tried the shrimp with vegetables, lamb stew noodle soup, and orange chicken. While the food was decent, the overall experience was disappointing due to poor service. The server was rude and showed no effort in providing good service, yet still insisted on being tipped. His behavior left a negative impression, and the only reason I maintained respect was because of his age. For me, customer service is more important than the food itself, and unfortunately, this experience fell far short of expectations. I don’t plan to return, even though the food wasn’t bad.

Google
Some of the most delicious Chinese food I’ve ever had! We ordered Hot & Sour Soup, Egg fried rice, Kung Pao chicken, Curry Chicken, Dry Sautéed String Besns, and Chow Mein … every dish was yummy! I can’t wait to go back and try more dishes 😁

Josefa Vilas Y.

Google
We love the thin sesame and green onion bread, and a visit would not be complete without pea shoots and sizzling pepper beef. The portions are very big but the prices are not. Pleasant honey atmosphere.

Yelp
I've been looking for good Chinese food. A co-worker told me about this place so I checked their menu online. I was happy to see many lunch offerings at different price points. The place is spacious and clean. I ordered the Kung Pao tofu lunch special. It comes with rice, soup and an egg roll. Everything was delicious and the portion was generous. I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try.

Yelp
We ordered takeout, and the food arrived blazing hot and absolutely delicious! The eggplant was perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. The cashew chicken was incredibly fresh the chicken was tender, and it had the perfect amount of water chestnuts. The orange chicken was still crispy and tender, with that perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavor. The chicken fried rice was also excellent the vegetables were crisp, the chicken was cooked perfectly, and the rice had great texture. Everything was packaged neatly and arrived in perfect condition. This is hands down the cleanest, freshest food I've ever had from an Asian restaurant. If you're debating where to go stop debating and order from here or go in!!! Wow

Yelp
I was expecting the usual Chinese food you'd find nearby. The interior and size were nice, but the food was tasteless. The food was extremely salty.

Yelp
I was drawn to the sign as I checked out and drove around the big Trader Joe's parking lot. Loved the name and had to experience this love. I did not know this was a Chinese Halal place. Rosa welcomed me warmly. I was seated in a nice booth by the window immediately in the approx 80 seat dining room. ( plus 22 in the outside patio). I opted for the Sliced Sole in spicy black bean sauce lunch special( loads of choices- photo). The accompanying egg flower w chicken soup was fantastic. So tasty. Did not use the soup spoon. The crunchy egg roll was my greasy n fried pre workout and beach run treat. Loved the filet of sole in the very unique black bean sauce with the black beans, a hint of chili and some nuts. Rosa and Lee must have told the Chef that there was a 209 lb big boy who came to eat in Ma's House because the serving was BIIIIIIG. ( photo). Lee came to my rescue with two take home boxes for the fish ( barely got through 30 percent of it) and the silky rice. The service was prompt and courteous. The menu was quite extensive with great looking dim sum( neighbor peek a boo), 11 different soups, 11 warm pots, apps, 22 beef entrees, lamb, lots of seafood and chicken creations, chow fun, noodle soups, a great vegetable portion( steamed rice xtra) and different fried rice selections- ordering the Three Flavor Spicy Curry Fried Rice with Eggs as my 5 pm post workout meal.I just counted 239 different items on this gorgeous menu - abundance just like in Ma's kitchen and House. This was a delicious and relaxed lunch in very appropriately, Ma's House.

Yelp
Exceptional food and service, we came with family of 4, the portions were big and the food was amazing. Miguel was our server and he brought us a plate of the house noodles to try and we were very impressed and happy, we will definitely come back!

Yelp
1st time ever trying a Chinese Halal place. I didn't know what to expect or if the flavors were any different than your regular Chinese restaurant. For landmark, this is tucked next to REI at the Trader Joes plaza on El Toro & Avenida dela Carlota. Brought my family here and here's what we ordered: green onion pie (yum), sauteed peapod greens, honey walnut shrimp (okay), dumplings (okay), fried rice, beef roll, & Ma's fried chicken (delish). Food was okay, the flavors were a little different considering Chinese & mediterranean spice fusion, and servings were a little smaller than your typical Chinese restaurant. We really enjoyed the fried chicken here though. Overall, the food was not as flavorful but it felt way healthier than the usual restaurants. They offer lunch specials (11AM - 3PM daily except holidays) with cheaper, small portions, but includes soup, egg roll, & steamed rice if you dine in. Service was good. Huge dining area that can accomodate big parties.

Yelp
Eight of us celebrated a couple of birthdays with lunch after church. Tucked in the back of a shopping center, it's easy to miss. I liked the 2 pages of lunch specials that are available every day. The specials include soup, egg roll, and rice. My choice was Kung Pao 3 Flavors. Since this is a halal menu, there is no pork. This item had beef, chicken, and shrimp. Others had curry chicken, sweet and sour chicken, Mongolian beef, sliced sole fillet in spicy bean sauce, and kung pao chicken. Not lunch specials, but two others ordered mushu chicken and oxtail soup. The portions were good, and everyone was pleased. I was surprised that the place settings included a fork and a spoon, but no chopsticks. The server gave me chopsticks on my request. The staff kindly brought us plates and forks for the homemade cake we brought. I was surprised to find out this place has been here for 7 years. There is plenty of parking in the shopping center. Overall, a pleasant dining experience.

Yelp
First timer here. Just a heads up - it's family style so portions are huge. Didn't realize that, but nothing wrong with left overs. We had sweet and sour soup, and egg drop soup along with chicken chow mein and fried rice. Food was good and Rosa was a sweetheart and very informative. Will be back

Yelp
Can't get enough of Ma's House! If you're looking for delicious and authentic Chinese food, look no further...Ma's House delivers. Great food. Great service. Ample parking. Love it.

Yelp
We arrived around 6:15pm on a Saturday and it wasn't too crowded yet. There is plenty of parking in the lot. We asked for a table for two and were quickly seated and brought menus. A male server came by and asked if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered some water and some hot tea. The person we encountered at the front desk and this server, were not the warmest of people-very efficient and matter-of-fact. However, Vila arrived to take our order and she was delightful!!! She enthusiastically approved of or decisions to order the Beef Stew Noodle Soup for my husband and Shrimp with assorted vegetables (I was looking for something on the healthy side). Our order arrived at our table fresh and hot in under ten minutes. We both very much enjoyed our meals and the total came to $40 (before gratuity). Vila came to check on us from time and each time, she was so friendly. She even asked and names and promised to try and remember them for our next visit. If everyone were as friendly as Vila, it would be a 5 star experience. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Hey you want halal, you want good halal, well Ma's house is the place, I have been experiencing Ma's house since I was a child where the original one resides in Fullerton, food has always been the same and man the service hey man they a true Chinese restaurant one chef ‍ in the back just absolutely crushing it!! Love the hustle

Adella F.

Yelp
Great tasting food! I got the Mogolian beef, steamed rice, and shrimp with vegetables. Food was hot and fresh with great flavor. Service was great, Miguel was very helpful with suggestions and any dietary restrictions! Villa also checked in on me often and was helpful. Portions are huge, so be prepared to share or have leftovers for the next day. Will definitely be back. The restaurant is clean and looks professional.

Yelp
Good food! So glad I found a place nearby where I live. Everything was fresh and so tasty. Had the curry noodles and fish, so yummy. Will be returning!

Yelp
Good haha Chinese food, Family owned , we went for Iftar a s the service was a bit slow, go early to be able to eat on time, Big portions and good price

Yelp
I was very curious about this place because I had not seen a Halal Chinese restaurant before. We were seated quickly and several workers came at different times to check on us. They have a fairly large dining area and could accommodate several larger parties at a time. I think the most impressive dish was the thin sesame bread with red bean. They give a very large portion and it is definitely great for sharing. The rest of the food was good, not the most spectacular, but still very tasty with good flavor.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
The service could have been better. The waiter didn't really check in on us and didn't appear to be too friendly. Aside from that, the food was good! The portion sizes are huge! Two people can share a plate! We ordered the beef with green onions and chicken fried rice.
google avatar

Si Si L.

Yelp
We came here to meet with our relatives for dinner. We had a big group of 13, and they were able to fit us into one table, which was nice. The service was ok. We often had to flag down the wait staff for something vs them checking in. The food in general was OK. My uncle ordered a bunch of dishes ahead of our arrival. Somehow we ended up with two big platters of the flatbread filled with red bean, and got shrimp with chestnuts (I think) vs walnut prawns. My uncle might have made a mistake, but at least for the flatbreads, the platters were huge, and I think a courteous waiter would have confirmed if that's what we really wanted. As for the food, I would say most were OK. The crispy chicken and short ribs were a bit on the dry side. The fried rice was good. The only dish that stood out to me was the orange beef. Overall, it was mediocre. Not sure that I would go back there again.

Gigi C.

Yelp
Im very disappointed of this noodle. I used to love 3 Flavors Spicy Noodle, it was so delicious. But today, the one i ordered (fresh noodle), it was terrible. The noodles were all broken and soggy. I requested to change to regular noodle or cancel the noodle for me. The manager refused to do it and told me, it is like that and we will not change for you. That is how the noodle is. I have been to this restaurant many times and I always order the same noodle, that is why i can tell IT IS NOT THE SAME. Anyway highly not recommend to this restaurant. And the owner should check what is going on with the kitchen, food quality and the service.
google avatar

Jim Z.

Yelp
We ordered four dishes including its "famous" bread. None of them is good. The cooking skills has dramatically going down compared to a few years ago. The waitress' attitude is careless. As if she does not care the business at all. Feel so sorry for this restaurant......will not go back!

Yelp
My family and friends have frequented Ma's House for years, but this experience really put a poor taste in our mouths. We got to the restaurant at 8, seated within 5 mins. It was prefaced to us that the kitchen closes at 8:30, which was fine. But in the next minute, our server came to take our order. When asking if we could get 5 more mins to actually look at the menu, she curtly told us we needed to order right there and then b/c the restaurant closes at 8:30. Yelp states the restaurant closes at 9. Their DOOR also says the same. But she was adamant about 8:30 and was quite rude with us, and so we walked right out. It was really disappointing, as we had family flying in from several different places and wanted to take them out to a place that we usually enjoy. But after this experience I'm really unsure if my family or I will be coming back anytime soon.

Yelp
We stopped at Ma's for dinner, and it was very good. We had the hot and sour soup followed by orange chicken, kung pao shrimp, vegetable chow mein, and steamed rice. The food was very good and service very prompt and professional. We enjoyed the dining experience and will definitely be back. The vibe is positive with a quiet overall environment.

Ameera N.

Yelp
The food was amazing - we were treated so nicely from the moment we stepped in until the moment we left. Great staff, great food. And it's HALAL! You won't regret it.

Yelp
I've been here a handful of times and contrary to the experiences of others, each time has been BETTER than the last. My in-laws suspected that there has been a rumored change in ownership/management due to her perceived quality drop, but I thought this most recent visit (Feb 2024) was the best ever lol. Probably bc I actually got to order what I wanted this time!! I got the Honey Walnut Shrimp, beef chow fun, Combination Lo Mein, a veggie, and the sweet red bean pancake. They were all excellent!! Seeing as how we cleared the plates, I'm surprised (though not really) MIL still found things to gripe about. My only issue with this place has always been that their restroom (doors) always felt sticky AND there is no baby changing pad in the bathrooms (I'm assuming not in Men's either if not in Women's). And that is it! I've always found their service to be quite adequate but maybe bc I'm used to NYC/LA service?! I like to be left alone honestly, when I'm eating. '

Yelp
Delicious food that is halal, so don't expect any pork products here, but the seafood/tofu soup and orange chicken always deliver
google avatar

Imran s.

Yelp
Great halal Chinese food with sharable portions. Succulent meats and a variety of other offerings. I'm not a big fan of their noodle choice for the chowmein. One plus is that the food was not as greasy as some of their competitors which was appreciated Family run business with good ethics and fair pricing, portions . Great place for takeout or dine in . Not the best Chinese food but above average. Prefer it over PF changs.

Katrina T.

Yelp
Amazing food. Can taste each ingredient separately. Can't go wrong with any dish. Forgot to take photos as we were so excited to eat the food. Wished we had a location available in NorCal.
google avatar

Nelson L.

Yelp
This place doesn't miss! Can't go wrong with the lamb and big green onion sesame bread! Good service. Good amount of seating.
google avatar

Crissy G.

Yelp
This place was good! The food comes out fast and hot! The taste was amazing and comes out in big portions. Cute place! Service was great!

Yelp
Not authentic Chinese food , do not recommend if you want to try authentic Chinese food , more Americanized Chinese food

Yelp
My mom & I actually love their lunch special, the price is right & the food is yummy. Mabel is ruining the business. Rude, disrespectful, and unapologetically unprofessional. One time, we came in at 2:20 PM and she told us before we even sat down, that we need to order right now. Because they close at 3. In 40 minutes, you wouldn't even give us a chance to sit? So we left. Today, we were halfway through lunch when she came and dropped off the check to hurry us out. When I said we were still eating, she said yeah ok, do it after then. I'm just going to leave it here. Then, she walked away and sat on the other side of the restaurant staring at all the customers. Wasn't busy, wasn't dropping off the check because there was a rush and she didn't want us to wait...just wanted us to hurry up. When I brought the check over to her and told her it was rude, she threw the check across the room to another table. We love the food, love your lunch menu, but Mabel is ruining your business. She's borderline scary.

Merle M.

Yelp
Food was not what was expected for a good chinese restaurant. Egg rolls were cold and the egg-flower soup had a strange chicken taste. Also rather on the expensive side for a lunch special.

D T.

Yelp
We are long time customers of Ma's. Regrettably, it is totally not the same as before: Bad food, bad service and bad altitude.
google avatar

Toni L.

Yelp
Mmmm it is so hard to find tasty Chinese food that is halal ! I am obsessed with this place & anyone that is looking for halal Chinese has to go here. This is my first time trying the Laguna Hills location, the first time I went to the one in Anaheim many many years ago. For some reason I wasn't that impressed back then but now it seems so much better. I like this location better than the Anaheim location, it is newer & very conveniently located in a plaza with other stores, plus it's close to the 5 freeway. It's Ramadhan & for Iftar I ordered take out. * Orange Chicken * Beef Rolls * Chicken fried rice The orange chicken was so delicious, not huge pieces & loaded with flavorful green onions. The beef rolls were hearty & the beef was delicious. The only thing I didn't enjoy about these was the cilantro, which always goes in the trash. Chicken fried rice was perhaps a teeny bit bland but it was still very tasty! I know I'm boring & basic ... but when you order take out here, the portions are HUGE, so don't go crazy on ordering a bunch. For around $45, I can get multiple meals out of it so definitely worth the price!
google avatar

Kyle N.

Yelp
Ordered the eggplant in brown sauce w/beef, the mongolian beef and the chicken fried rice. Every plate was packed with flavor and hit the spot. I'd never tried Chinese Halal before but I'm definitely coming back here for the lunch specials. Service was quick, friendly and prices weren't too bad. My friend and I split 3 entrees and the damage came out to around $40 total with lots of leftovers. It's a quiet spot and perfect for lunch with friends or coworkers.

Chiu H.

Yelp
Did a take out this round and still as good as sit down to eat in the restaurant. Their food quality has been very consistent with very reasonable prices.

Yelp
Everything was going fine until the credit card was provided back to us with the bill paid. Normally when you get the receipt back you add in the tip and total the amount with your signature. At this restaurant, the tip was already included with the itemized receipt. There was no mention of it beforehand and after either. I noticed it and talked to the waitress. She said "yes we add the tip to the bill automatically and it's your job to look at the receipt to let us know if you want the tip removed". I mean why would there be multiple transactions? We had a party of 4 so tip should not have been included and no one looks at the receipt and then after the credit card had been run to take out the tip? This is very deceiving and quite opposite of Islamic values. I would have tipped if it wasn't automatically included but it's the principle of the matter. THE TIP SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED FOR A SMALL PARTY OF 4!!! Food was okay but this thing with the tip just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Kathy S.

Yelp
I came in for lunch, the restaurant had two tables occupied so they were not busy at all. There was no one at the entrance to great guest. After waiting a while I flagged someone down to get a seat. Server did not offer any insight or suggestions the menu. I placed my order. They didn't bring any water or take my drink order.Dumping were delicious. Customer Service was very disappointing
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
Came in on a weekday for lunch with a friend. They were prompt to seat us and give us menus and tea There was a decent crowd but it wasn't too busy. The inside was a relatively nice Chinese restaurant when compared to others ones I've been too in la. It wasn't too loud. My friend and I ordered the orange chicken and the black pepper chicken with mushroom. It was pretty good. We also got some egg drop soup as well. The soup was a bit on the bland side but the main dishes were pretty good. Nothing too stand out . Overall a decent local Chinese restaurant. Will give an additional star as there aren't too many Chinese restaurants in south oc to compare
google avatar

Deron R.

Yelp
Went in on a Tuesday, wasn't busy at all. Service was very quick, efficient and food came out piping hot. In random order of course but who cares. Honey walnut shrimp was meaty and good, kung Pao chicken was saucy and sizzling beef was nice. The dumplings were ok, nothing special. Green onion pie was nice. Last, we had the sauteed pea pod leaves, ok but needed garlic and seasoning. All in all a solid 3 star affair. Well try again.

Nari S.

Yelp
The best halal Chinese restaurant in OC! The restaurant is beautiful and family friendly, service is excellent, and food is always delicious.
google avatar

Dana O.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. The Orange chicken tastes great, just be sure to ask for all white meat. The quality of the meat is fantastic I assume because it is halal.
google avatar

Maheen K.

Yelp
So we came here today for lunch and it was not crowded at all. Maybe 5 total tables had people on them so we expected the service to be in and out. We ordered the hot and sour soup, 3 green onion paratha, and one lunch portion of the spicy garlic chicken. The portion size was fine and the soup and chicken came out in a reasonable time. I did have a huge issue with our green onion paratha literally taking 30 minutes and even then they displayed no green onions and were half cooked. It almost seemed like our order prompted them to start making the dough for it. Our otherwise pleasant experience with the soup and chicken were ruined by the time and quality of the paratha. And the service was slow too. I would have at least expected them to comp for them bringing out something like that after we had already finished eating our meal and soup. Even my daughter, who is two, asked about the paratha more than once. It was disappointing.
google avatar

Clement C.

Yelp
Great taste, fast paced service, comfortable surroundings, well maintained facilities. We will come back soon
google avatar

Reza Q.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants in OC Their Chow Mein is amazing We always got great service. Try it once and you will become a regular. I'm a regular customer for many years but never got a chance to do any review!
google avatar

Hana J.

Yelp
I hate leaving such a low rating review but this place truly disappoints this year. It's everyone's go to during Ramadan. I ordered 20 min in advance and told the waiter we are eating at 7:10. It wasn't that busy but once it hit 7 it got pretty booked. We watched while others that came after us got their food and the waiters do not acknowledge you, please please get more people on your staff! They gave us disgusting warm sink water to break our fast. We started eating at 7:45 and food came out cold, and they forgot one of our main dishes. Soup came out at the veryyyyyy end once we finished everything. Complete waste of time and will only go to the Anaheim location from now and on.
google avatar

Izzy R.

Yelp
Good but getting really expensive I have to say bye 4 items cost close to 80$ :( please make deals or maybe more affordable options
google avatar

Brett M.

Yelp
All good things come to an end. Looks like Ma's House decided to remove the Special Instructions options from both Grubhub and Doordash. This takes away the ability to remove food allergies from dishes. Guess I wont be ordering from here anymore. What a shame.
google avatar

Caroline D.

Yelp
We have order door dash from Ma's house plenty of times. This was the first time I went in to order. Wow Just wow I'm not sure if they have ever been good at customer service based on other reviews I've been reading. But here's my "experience". We called up to order and said we would collect. That all went fine. But when I arrived I wasn't greeted or even acknowledged. He was taking a phone order so it wasn't a huge deal. When he finally got around to me I said I was there to collect my order and please make sure there is steamed rice. He went out back, and brought my order through, and shoved my receipt into my face and said I didn't order steamed rice, I said I assumed it came with steamed rice. One of the dishes was a wet dish to be put over rice so I assumed it came with rice. Once again no big deal. I asked if I could buy rice, he frowned at me, and the said yes, two rice will be $3.25 (which is insanely high) I said that's fine and I'll take two. I said my purse is in the car and I'll be back with the money. He said that I couldn't order it without paying first. I said I know, I'm going to get money, if he can just get the rice ready. He said NO, I must pay first. I said okay..... I'll be five seconds. He said I have to go to the back of the queue that had formed when I got back. So literally no joke.... I ran to the car, came back, and had to wait for 6 minutes to get steamed rice. He took two orders for people in the restaurant, but what really got me laughing was when he told me to wait so he could take two phone order too! Hahahahaha. I felt like i was being pranked. I understand they are busy, but why not notice I came back and just put the rice order in. Did he think I was gonna order and dash? On $3.25 worth of rice?? The whole thing was so laughable. I just don't think I can ever go back again. Onto the food.... it's good but it was cold by the time I got home so the whole experience sucked!
