This is a huge restaurant, big enough for a convention group, so when you're the only one there it seems really lonely. As it did when I went for their lunch special by myself one day a short time back, around 1 pm.
When I entered the restaurant, I stood next to the counter by the door. The "greater" wasn't there; I could see she was seated in a small room to my left, where she was alone at one of the diner tables working on a laptop. When she noticed me, I was seated in the other, much larger main room. It was empty but looked like they were set up for a large number of customers. Maybe their main business is later in the day or at night?
She left, and a person showed up who I think was the server, busboy, and cook. He was the only staff person I saw. I ordered the orange chicken lunch special, which would be a pretty good deal if your main goal is to get stuffed. It came with a cup of soup (tasty), two egg rolls (very tasty -- the highlight of the meal), and white rice (lots). I ordered tea but didn't realize there was a charge for that. It was just $1, so not a big deal, but in the majority of Asian restaurants I've been to that have tea in a pot, it's free. Unfortunately, the pot was so hot I couldn't pick it up to pour myself some tea until I was half finished with my meal.
The orange chicken was pretty pedestrian. But it was a gigantic serving, and I could hardly finish by myself. Along with the generous amount of rice, it could easily have been a shared lunch for two. It was listed on the menu as "spicy", but all that meant was that they put in a half-dozen roasted red chilis. The chili's were very good and added flavor that the dish desperately needed. But the chicken, unless eaten with one of the chilis, wasn't spicy at all.
The cook/server/busboy cashed me out but alas! He forgot to add the $1 charge for the tea. He realized that he had done so just after bringing the bill to the table, so he went off somewhere and fixed it. So much effort to collect that extra $1, but I suppose the profit margin on their lunch special (which I think was only $12.50 or $13.50) is probably pretty slim.
I'm undecided as to whether I want to go back. It might be worth another try. If I do return, I think I'll do so with someone else -- to share. And I really don't think I'll order a pot of tea.
