Masa, a cozy family-run pizzeria in Echo Park, serves hearty Chicago-style deep-dish pies alongside vegan options and delightful bread pudding.
"We understand that deep-dish pizza isn’t for everyone, but will never understand anyone who doesn’t like hanging out at Masa for a night. Eating at this casual spot feels like you’re eating at your aunt’s house that could probably use a paint job, but nobody says anything, because deep down the bright orange feels right. The waitstaff treats you like family and the two-inch deep, cornmeal-dusted crust will leave you in a state of catatonic bliss. Pizzas take 45 minutes to make, but you can call ahead and get it started early if you’d like." - brant cox, sylvio martins
"The craving for deep-dish pizza is a very particular one, but once it hits, there's no denying it. Though Los Angeles isn’t crawling with options, there are a few spots that stand out amongst the pack. One of those is Masa, an old-school spot in Echo Park. The restaurant is decorated like a grandmother’s living room, which is already promising. Settle into a table and order a surprisingly affordable carafe of house wine and a deep-dish pie to share. For something green, try the manchego salad which comes with a hot roll and butter on the site. Just be prepared to take some leftovers home, and be eating deep-dish for the next few days — generous is an understatement for the portions here." - Eater Staff
"Echo Park’s tremendous pizza spot Masa is open for takeout and delivery, which is very good news for anyone who needs good deep dish in these dark times. The traditional, with a thin layer of sausage and mushrooms underneath an extremely not-thin layer of mozzarella cheese, is our favorite. Expect to have leftovers - you’re going to be stuffed after one slice." - brett keating
"We realize Chicago deep-dish pizza isn’t for everyone, but you know what is? No corkage fee on wine. This Echo Park standby is one of our favorite family-run spots on the Eastside, and it’s hard not to have a great time whether you’re with friends or a low-key date. The pizzas take a while in the oven - all the more time to get through those bottles you brought." - brant cox
"Movie Pairing:Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Netflix) “As a Chicagoland native, I know that few movies are dearer to the people of The Windy City than Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. So lean into that fact and order delivery from Masa while you watch. The family-owned restaurant in Echo Park is run by Illinois natives and their buttery, perfectly constructed deep-dish pizza is proof. I tend to go for The Traditional (sweet sausage and mushroom), because that’s what I grew up eating, but you can’t really go wrong with any of the pies. Just be sure to throw in a manchego salad and bread pudding as well. Then sit back, embrace your food coma, and gaze in stunned amazement at how well this film holds up.” - BC" - brant cox, kat hong, brett keating, james montgomery
