When I think of Masala Art, I'll admit that the first word that comes to mind is "average". They will not blow you away with their food; the curries are generally tasty, if unmemorable, a bit watery, and light on ingredients, and the accompanying scoop of rice is skimpy with an extra (small) bowl setting you back $3. I'm accustomed to having leftovers from Indian restaurants; at Masala Art, I always finish what I ordered because of the smaller-than-average portion sizes.
However, Masala Art will package your takeout correctly and provide friendly service that is not at all mad or judgmental if you roll out of a neighboring apartment in slubby clothes late in the evening and only order a plate of samosas to share. They're also really nice about splitting checks, which is super appreciated. The happy hour also has a very long duration (4-8pm), decent deals, and live music that is actually pretty good! The decor is quite tasteful (the candle-holders in particular are very cute) and on weeknights, the restaurant has a laid-back atmosphere.
I've enjoyed the samosas (the light spice adds a nice bit of heat), the naan, the tofu garam masala, and the saag paneer, and my favorite item so far is the goat cheese akhrot kofta, which is similar to a malai kofta.
Since my friend lives right down the street, I know for sure I'll be back again, and I'm not mad about it. Even if I've definitely had better Indian food (for less money) elsewhere, ultimately, Masala Art delivers on what I look for in a solid neighborhood spot: a reliably enjoyable meal.
